NP & NYP’s Iconic Sandwich Shop Is No Longer On Campus, But You Can Find It At ION Orchard Instead

If you’re a former or current student at NP or NYP, then you’ll be familiar with Splash n Decker or “that sandwich shop”.

It’s been 2 years since I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and till today I still remember the sandwiches from Splash n Decker. Their simple yet delicious sandwiches got us through morning lectures or for a quick go-to when the school canteens got too crowded.

Sadly, both branches have since closed down – the NYP joint closed years ago, while the loss of NP’s branch was more recent on June 1.

That Xtra Sandwich

Die hard fans of Splash n Decker will be pleased to know that the brand has moved on to bigger things such as opening up shop at ION Orchard’s Basement. Which is a major upgrade from NP and NYP combined.

[caption id="attachment_37210" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: Stella Thng Facebook[/caption]

Owned by the Four Leaves brand, Splash n Decker now goes by the name Sandwich Lab. The ION Orchard store now sports a new sleek and clean exterior – which is a stark contrast from their previous old school bakery vibe.

[caption id="attachment_37211" align="aligncenter" width="750"]splash n decker Image Credit: @npsu[/caption]

If you ask any NYP/NP kid, they’ll highly recommend the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich ($4.80) which comes with a slab of tender teriyaki chicken sandwiched between two buttery toasted bread.

There are at least 10 types of sandwiches you can choose from ranging between $4 – $4.80. They’re not as cheap as it was back during our poly days (it was only $2.90 then) but hey, if it means I get to enjoy the same old sandwiches, they can take all my money.

[caption id="attachment_37212" align="aligncenter" width="1012"]splash n decker Image Credit: @sabestian.v40[/caption]

There are also new additions to the menu such as the Spicy Tuna Croissant ($4) and the Tom Yam Seafood Sandwich ($4.50).

If you miss your poly days, grab your friends and head on down to Sandwich Lab for your sandwich fix!

Popular China Tea Brand TaiGai Opens First Overseas Outlet At NEX – Prices Start From $3.30

TaiGai singapore

While food trends come and go, Fruit Teas look like they’re here to stay for a while.

From Partea to Teafolia, fruit tea fans can look forward to the opening of TaiGai at NEX Serangoon!

Established in Shenzhen, China, TaiGai is a popular tea brand in China with over 60 stores across the country. They’re also known for their signature offerings and healthier tea options using mainly fresh fruits and premium quality teas in their concoctions.

TaiGai’s NEX outlet is their first venture out of China.

Love At First Sip

If you’re wondering, “What’s the difference between TaiGai and other fruit tea brands?

TaiGai is the pioneer behind “Fruity Milky Kiss” – fruit-blended milk cheese crowns. The drinks are topped with a milk cheese foam that has been blended with fruits, which gives you that natural sweetness and pulpy bits as you sip on your fruity tea.

[caption id="attachment_37137" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]TaiGai Singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

With fresh fruits used predominantly in the teas, TaiGai is careful to retain its natural fragrance and sweetness to complement the taste and aroma of these crafted teas.

Another highlight of their drinks would be their “Beary Cute Series” that comes with an adorable bear-ear lid.

If you’re wondering what drink you should get from TaiGai, here’s what we highly recommend:

Pulpy Strawberry Kiss ($6.80)

[caption id="attachment_37132" align="aligncenter" width="5076"]taigai singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The most popular “Fruity Milky Kiss” drink would be the Pulpy Strawberry Kiss, which is perfect if you want something refreshing and sweet. About half a cup of strawberries are used for just one drink!

This drink is exceptionally popular as it has the perfect balance of fresh sweetness and a hint of sourness from the strawberries, along with the fragrance of the tea.

When you take the first sip from the opening, you can first taste the blended crown which has well-balanced milk-cheese to fruit ratio followed by the fruit-blended tea.

The milk cheese crown has a perfect velvety finishing when sipped together with the fruit blended tea. The generous pulp from the blended strawberries adds dimension to the entire experience.

Pulpy Pineapple Kiss ($6.20)

[caption id="attachment_37139" align="aligncenter" width="5076"]TaiGai singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Also a part of the “Fruity Milky Kiss” series, the Pulpy Pineapple Kiss is one of TaiGai’s signature drinks.

If you’re looking for something to quench your thirst, this drink is a juicy tropical blend that is both refreshing and zesty – reminiscent of sunny days lying on the beach in Thailand.

Milky Kiss Baby Cicada Oolong ($4.90)

[caption id="attachment_37133" align="aligncenter" width="5076"]taigai singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

For the tea lovers, you can choose from the “Pure Tea” or the “Pure Tea Milky Kiss” series that are topped with the milk cheese crowns.

The Milky Kiss Baby Cicada Oolong is one of the signature drinks on the menu. Similar to the civet cat coffee, when a cicada bites the baby tea leaves, it changes the chemistry resulting in an authentic taste profile of this oolong tea.

This golden-coloured tea is paired nicely with the milk cheese crown as it was smooth and has a slight hint of bitterness from the tea itself.

Perhaps it’s time to swap out your everyday tea for the Milky Kiss Baby Cicada Oolong.

Fresh Premium Orange Burst ($5.90)

[caption id="attachment_37136" align="aligncenter" width="5076"]TaiGai Singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Fruit Teas, also known as infusions, are gaining popularity because they come across as healthier versions as compared to their counterparts of Bubble Tea.

In their “Fresh Fruit Tea” series, you can choose from Fresh Golden Kumquat Burst ($4), Fresh Green Lemon Burst Green Tea ($4.50), Fresh Yellow Lemon Burst Black Tea ($4.50) and Fresh Premium Orange Burst ($5.90).

The recommended drink is the Fresh Premium Orange Burst. The drink consists of freshly sliced oranges and a slice of lime.

This calming and refreshing drink makes for the perfect afternoon thirst quencher.

Beary Creative Milk Tea ($4.50)

[caption id="attachment_37134" align="aligncenter" width="5076"]TaiGai singapore Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

This is probably a favourite for most as the drinks comes with an adorable bear-shaped lid.

You can choose from the Beary Co Co which is a very chocolatey drink or the Beary Creative Milk Tea which is a milk tea drink with choice of pearls, nata de coco, or red bean.

The Beary Creative Milk Tea comes with one topping of your choice and an additional 80cents for extra topping.

Pro-tip: Shine a light from the top of the cup and see the magic happen!

From Fusion Dishes To Tea Tastings, Grids & Circles Has Everything For The Perfect Date

Grids & Circles

Cafes have become increasingly popular across the island in the recent years, favoured by millennials due to their Pinterest-worthy aesthetics and brunch menus.

However, the truth is, most cafes have a pretty basic food menu. Call me cynical but pretty latte art and a good brew can only go so far.

But there’s a newcomer in town and they’re gearing up to spoil market.

A Cafe And More

As I stepped out of my Grab, I saw the place – an entirely white shophouse save for their pastel-coloured logo and address.

[caption id="attachment_36834" align="aligncenter" width="2794"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Stepping in, I feel like I just walked into a Scanteak x MUJI showroom.

[caption id="attachment_36835" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Of the 3 levels in the shophouse, level one houses the coffee bar, cashier, kitchen, and some seating space.

[caption id="attachment_36836" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Level 2 is where you’ll find the Flex Space, which is a larger area that can accommodate up to 32 people comfortably, and can be booked for corporate or private events.

The Flex Space is divided into 2 sections.

[caption id="attachment_36832" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Flex Space 1 is the larger of the 2 and provides additional seating for customers who are simply there to dine.

[caption id="attachment_36869" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Flex Space 2 is primarily allocated as a work space. It can also double as a space for conducting workshops.

[caption id="attachment_36870" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

East Meets West

Now, for the part you’re all waiting for, THE FOOD.

The menu at Grids & Circles doesn’t really centre around a specific cuisine. Though the easiest way to describe it would be “East meets West”.

[caption id="attachment_36877" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

I managed to try a few dishes specially curated by the Head Chef and Co-Founder, Daryl Lim.

To start things off, I was served a Watercress Potage with Bacon.

[caption id="attachment_36838" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

I’m a big fan of vegetables and chunky soups and this reminded me of a chunkier cream of broccoli. All I can say is, it didn’t stand a chance against my spoon – gone in 60 seconds.

The next dish was a Tamago Sando ($12).

A fat slab of Japanese tamagoyaki sits between 2 slices of white bread, one slathered in house made konbu mayo, and the other with a thin but useful layer of pear compote.

[caption id="attachment_36839" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

I’m not going to lie. This sandwich comprises everything I love, so I was a little disappointed with the flavour of the tamagoyaki because it tasted a bit bland.

The konbu mayo was generous but did little to elevate the sandwich and it was quickly becoming jelak, 3 bites in. That was until the pear compote came into play.

The sweet pear compote helped to balance the flavours of the sandwich so maybe a little more pear compote and less konbu mayo would be great.

The next dishes were mains in the form of their Summer Pasta ($16) and Almond Bacon Carbonara ($16).

The Summer Pasta has tagliatelle tossed in a bacon cream sauce with fennel, watercress, Japanese cherry tomatoes, and garnished with shaved Parmigiano Reggiano.

[caption id="attachment_36844" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The Almond Bacon Carbonara also uses tagliatelle tossed in bacon cream sauce, toasted almonds, an onsen egg, and Parmigiano Reggiano.

[caption id="attachment_36845" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

If I had to choose one, I’d go for the Summer Pasta. The textures and subtle flavours from every ingredient made it a very enjoyable dish to eat. 10/10 will order again.

For the vegetarians, vegetarian options are available for all pastas.

The next to arrive was an interesting Modanyaki Slider.

[caption id="attachment_36850" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Modanyaki is a type of okonomiyaki which also contains yakisoba for a double whammy of carbs. What Head Chef Daryl Lim has done, is that he took the key ingredients of a modanyaki and turned it into a slider.

There’s the beef patty, lettuce, katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes), okonomiyaki sauce, konbu mayo, spring onions, and a unique “noodle crisp”.

[caption id="attachment_36851" align="aligncenter" width="5807"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The noodle crisp is made by blending cooked instant ramen into a paste, smearing it on a baking sheet and toasting. What you get is a thin, pale crisp that looks like uncooked tau kee (beancurd skin). While it’s tasteless, it does add an interesting texture to the slider.

Next, the Salmon Ochazuke ($16).

[caption id="attachment_36852" align="aligncenter" width="5431"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Now, I’m a huge fan of Ochazuke and it’s really hard to find good ones in Singapore.

The version here comes with seared sous vide salmon, shredded shiso leaf, nori strips, umeboshi (salted plum), brown rice, and bacon dashi green tea.

If you’re looking for something comforting for lunch, this is it. There’s no other way to describe this. You have to try it for yourself.

Ending off the meal were 2 desserts – the Matcha Affogato ($11) and the Strawberry Wonderland ($16).

[caption id="attachment_36879" align="aligncenter" width="3376"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36855" align="aligncenter" width="5583"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The Strawberry Wonderland comes with 2 pancakes, strawberry compote, basil and mint sauce, and fresh strawberries sitting on a cloud of chantilly cream.

It’s simple, straightforward and so darn good.

You can also choose from their seasonal homemade cakes and pastries in the display at level 1.

[caption id="attachment_36881" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Now, for the drinks, Grids & Circles has a rather extensive drinks menu. Choose from coffees, teas, cold brews, coffee and tea-based lattes, and even craft beers!

I got myself an Iced Hibiscus Tea with Honey and Mandarin Oranges ($7.50) because I’m boujee and I like sweet drinks. Bite me.

[caption id="attachment_36857" align="aligncenter" width="3376"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

It was great for a while, before the ice melted and the drink started tasting a little like Ribena. But I liked it nonetheless. It’s refreshing for sure.

Finally, what makes Grids & Circles so unique, is that they hold tea degustations for the public, conducted by Clement Lim, a coffee and tea connoisseur and certified sommelier. He’s also the younger brother of Head Chef Daryl Lim.

[caption id="attachment_36861" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36862" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36863" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The Fine Teas menu is separated into Classic Teas, Artisanal Teas, and Pinnacle Teas, in ascending order of quality.

[caption id="attachment_36866" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36868" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]Grids & Circles Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Tea degustation ranges from $18 to $58, depending on the set of teas you choose for the session.

I highly recommend the tea degustation if you love your tea.

Despite their rather bustling location, Grids & Circles provides a respite from the hustle of the city. With good food, great coffee and tea, a cosy ambience, and even greater service.

I’m definitely returning for more, and if you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for?

This New Cafe Serves The Dopa-st Gelato In S’pore, And You Can Choose To Have It With Croissant!

We’ve had ice cream paired with waffles, cookies, cones, bread, but thanks to Dopa Dopa Creamery, we now have ice cream with butter croissants!

New to the slew of cafés that have been sprouting on South Bridge Road is a small artisanal ice cream cafe, Dopa Dopa Creamery.

[caption id="attachment_36822" align="aligncenter" width="1290"]dopa dopa creamery Image Credit: Burpple User Isabelle Leong[/caption]

Dose of DOPAmine

Located just 2 minutes away from Clarke Quay MRT, Dopa Dopa Creamery is the perfect place to unwind on those hot sunny afternoons.

Whether it is a scoop of refreshing sorbet in the middle of the day or an indulgent dessert to end off your night, Dopa Dopa Creamery will please you with their range of ice cream.

[caption id="attachment_36823" align="aligncenter" width="640"]dopa dopa creamery Image Credit: Dopa Dopa Creamery Facebook[/caption]

Selling out on their first day of operations, here is why you need to make a trip down to Dopa Dopa Creamery if you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Serving only a maximum of 8 ice-cream flavours a day, Dopa Dopa Creamery’s stretchy, gooey and creamy gelato is something for hot days. The thick consistency gives the icy treat a slight chewiness, which makes it great on their crunchy cone, flaky croissant and, of course, on its own.

https://www.facebook.com/dopadopasg/videos/221473108549433/

The Watermelon Mint and Apple Ginger sorbets are refreshing options, but if you’re seeking richer flavours, get the Roasted Pistachio or Speculoos with Lotus Biscuit which features bits and pieces of crushed caramel biscuits mixed into a creamy and milky base, giving it an extra crunchy texture

Premium flavours include Green Tea Toasted Rice, Hojicha, Home Roasted Pistachio, Home Roasted Hazelnut, and Speculoos with Lotus Biscuit.

[caption id="attachment_36824" align="aligncenter" width="1290"]dopa dopa creamery Image Credit: Burpple User Joe Yang[/caption]

Basic flavours like Banana, Apple Ginger Sorbet and Watermelon Mint Sorbet, meanwhile, are lighter and refreshing, making them a perfect accompaniment to the richer, premium flavours.

[caption id="attachment_36825" align="aligncenter" width="1290"]dopa dopa creamery Image Credit: Burpple User Emily Toh[/caption]

We highly recommend skipping the mainstream cups and cones and going straight for their flaky butter croissants instead ($5.50).

Plus, Dopa Dopa Creamery also serves staple coffee selection such as the flat white, black and espresso as well as a range of brewed tea from local tea retailer Leefe Tea. So coffee enthusiasts can look forward to getting a cuppa to complement the sweetness of their desserts.

If You’re Mad For Marbling, This Restaurant Serves Grade 9 Wagyu Beef Bowls Under $25

TOKIDON

Let me just start off with a disclaimer – I’m a huge fan of steak.

So imagine my delight when I learned that I was going to be sampling Wagyu beef bowls one fine afternoon.

A short ride on my Grab later, I find myself in the heart of the CBD, at TOKIDON.

Beef Appreciation 101

Some background – TOKIDON is the new brainchild of the people who brought us sake gastrobar Kabuke, with the aim to educate customers and make them more discerning when it comes to beef.

[caption id="attachment_36711" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Standing at the helm of this new venture, is Head Chef, Rio Neo.

[caption id="attachment_36712" align="aligncenter" width="1776"]TOKIDON Image Credit: Melissa Chan[/caption]

Chef Neo started working in the kitchen when he was younger, helping out in his parents’ economic bee hoon stall, preparing ingredients and cooking. It is this experience which inculcated in him the belief that simple ingredients can produce big flavours, and that not everything has to be expensive to taste good.

He would later encounter the variety of Wagyu beef, as well as the different cuts and preparation methods during his time working in Fat Cow.

His stint in Kinki also equipped him with the know-how when it comes to food presentation and seamless fusion of different cuisines.

These experiences would subsequently culminate in TOKIDON’s menu.

A Beef-ed Up Menu

TOKIDON specialises in Wagyu beef bowls.

[caption id="attachment_36713" align="aligncenter" width="1181"]TOKIDON Image Credit: TOKIDON[/caption]

Chef Neo uses Grade 6 and Grade 9 Australian grass-fed Wagyu beef in the rice bowls.

For those of you who don’t know what the rankings mean, Australian Wagyu goes by the ranking of 1 to 9, with Grade 9 Wagyu having the best marbling (fat to lean meat ratio).

[caption id="attachment_36714" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]TOKIDON Image Credit: TOKIDON[/caption]

He mentions that he personally sources for the farms that raise the cows, to ensure that they live in optimal conditions and that the way the cows are slaughtered plays a part in the quality of the beef.

“Happy cows equals to delicious beef”, he quipped.

TOKIDON serves up 4 cuts of beef – Wagyu Tenderloin, Wagyu Striploin, Striploin, and Wagyu Shortplate.

[caption id="attachment_36727" align="aligncenter" width="1776"]TOKIDON Image Credit: Melissa Chan[/caption]

If you’re new to Wagyu beef, Chef Neo recommends the Gyu Don ($11.90) which uses Striploin. It has a balanced fat to lean meat ratio, so it won’t be too rich and jelak after finishing a bowl.

[caption id="attachment_36715" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

But for those of you looking for something a little different, go for the Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($17.90) which uses Wagyu Shortplate. It’s a unique cut of beef that’s offered at TOKIDON.

[caption id="attachment_36716" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Wagyu Shortplate is usually braised or slow-cooked to offset the chewy and tougher texture of the cut. At TOKIDON, the Wagyu Shortplate is sliced thinly and cooked sukiyaki-style, before it’s served in the beef bowl.

The result is a Wagyu beef bowl that makes Yoshinoya’s Gyu Don retire in shame.

Chef Neo’s personal favourite, however, is the Truffle Wagyu Don ($23.90), which uses Wagyu Striploin and is dressed with a house blend of truffle and soy sauce.

[caption id="attachment_36717" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

For the accompanying pescatarians, TOKIDON didn’t forget about you guys. They have a Salmon Cha Soba ($16.90) which comes with a teriyaki-glazed, sashimi-grade salmon served on a base of green tea soba and an onsen egg.

[caption id="attachment_36718" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

If you’re looking to reduce your carb intake, you can choose from a salad or cha soba for other base options.

While the mains are great, the sides aren’t lacking either, with options such as Tori Karaage skewers with Yuzu mayo ($1.90), Fried Ebi skewers with Mentaiko sauce ($1.90), Spicy Corn Cup ($3.90), and Wagyu Suji Miso Soup ($3.90).

[caption id="attachment_36719" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]TOKIDON Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The side that stood out to me was the Wagyu Suji Miso Soup. It was an interesting creation and I’ve never seen it served in Singapore.

Chef Neo explained that he tries not to waste any part of the beef, so he used the wagyu trimmings to make the soup, and mixed in miso paste for additional flavour.

Suji is actually a dish I came upon when I was in travelling in Japan, where it was served in traditional restaurants. It’s like a stew that the Japanese usually prepare in Winter. It’s very comforting”, said Chef Neo.

This is a side dish that you have to try. It’s worth every cent.

TOKIDON also has a Sunakku menu that starts at 3pm. The only items on the Sunakku menu currently are the Wagyu Sliders ($12.90) and Wagyu Bolognese ($9.90).

The Wagyu Bolognese comes served with buttered, toasted slices of foccacia, which goes incredibly well with the Wagyu Bolognese.

The beverage menu features authentic Japanese canned drinks (from $2.90) and cup sakes ($11.90).

[caption id="attachment_36723" align="aligncenter" width="5164"]TOKIDON Image Credit: TOKIDON[/caption]

Happy hour begins from 4pm to 9pm and every order of 10 beers or 5 cups of sakes will get you one-hour of FREE FLOW TORI KARAAGE. This is not a joke.

TOKIDON Merchandise

Food aside, TOKIDON has also collaborated with local artist and creator of Kult Magazine, Gallery & Studio, Mojoko, and Flabslab to come up with official merchandise.

Get the limited edition “Tok-Tee” for $59.90, or the adorable 8-bit acrylic keychains at $9.90 each, or $26.90 for a set of 3.

What’s more, with every purchase of a beef bowl at TOKIDON will earn you a chance to try your hand at their Gachapon machine where you’ll stand to win any of the acrylic keychains or meal vouchers.

Genki Sushi Opening New Bishan Outlet On Aug 17 – And They’re Giving Away 100 Sushi Sets!

There’s never a bad time for some sushi, and when it comes to an affordable, no-frills option few do it better than the folks at Genki Sushi (if the massive lines outside their stores are any indication, we aren’t the only ones who think so too).

With four of their five outlets situated in central Singapore, however, getting to one for a casual meal can be a tad inconvenient for those who don’t live in town, which is about…90% of the population?

[caption id="attachment_36573" align="alignnone" width="1260"]Genki Sushi Outlets Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption]

Thankfully for us low SES neighbourhood folk, the brand has some “aggressive expansion plans” to triple the number of stores in Singapore by 2023, and they’re definitely starting off on the right foot with the opening of their sixth outlet at Junction 8 this Friday.

North-Side, Best Side

Apart from the (relatively) more accessible location, the opening of this new outlet couldn’t have come at a better time, with Genki Sushi having revamped their menu earlier this week.

[caption id="attachment_36570" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Genki Sushi New Menu Image Credit: Genki Sushi[/caption]

The updated version includes the second edition of their Dai Man Zoku signature collection (fittingly called Dai Man Zoku Vol. 2) — which claims to be 1.5 times larger than the average sushi and features new offerings such as jumbo crab stick mentaiyaki and jumbo ebi fry.

And what would a grand opening be without some freebies?

To celebrate the occasion, 100 five-piece sushi sets will be given out for free on a first-come-first-served basis — the giveaway is scheduled to take place from 11am to 11:30am, (we doubt that it’ll last that long, though), with the store officially opening immediately afterwards.

With outlets in the North and East (Waterway Point) of Singapore, here’s hoping that Genki Sushi shows some love to the west siders in the near future too.

We Can’t Believe It’s Not Prata – Jay Chou’s Favourite Scallion Pancake Sandwiches Are Now In S’pore

Liang Sandwich Bar

Singaporeans are spoilt when it comes to the variety of food that’s available.

There’s at least one new franchise opening an outlet in Singapore every month. Recently, Isaac Toast opened in Plaza Singapura’s basement.

Now, Liang Sandwich Bar from China has opened its first outlet in Singapore at Vivocity!

Scallion Pancake Sandwiches

The sandwiches at Liang Sandwich Bar aren’t made with bread. What’s used instead, are scallion pancakes that come with fillings such as chicken, shredded lettuce, egg crepe, and sauce.

[caption id="attachment_36180" align="aligncenter" width="1440"]Liang Sandwich Bar Image Credit: Liang Sandwich Bar[/caption]

Endorsed by iconic Taiwanese singer-songwriter, Jay Chou, Liang Sandwich Bar has over 12,000 outlets across 300+ cities such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, United States of America, Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and now Singapore!

If you’ve tried and love scallion pancakes, you’ll love this. Scallion pancakes are much more fragrant than toasts and already hold plenty of flavour on its own.

[caption id="attachment_36182" align="aligncenter" width="960"]Liang Sandwich Bar Image Credit: Liang Sandwich Bar HQ[/caption]

Throw in traditional sandwich ingredients and you have a Liang scallion pancake sandwich.

There are 9 different scallion pancake sandwiches on the menu for you choose from.

The Chicken Bolognese Sandwich ($5.50) and the Liang Chicken Sandwich ($5.90) are both recommended by Jay Chou.

The Liang Chicken Sandwich comes with savoury smoked chicken, shredded lettuce, egg crepe, and a sauce of your choice.

You can also choose the type of sauce you’d like to have in your sandwich. The recommended sauce is definitely the Liang’s Sauce that’s made from a special secret recipe.

Recently, Food League SG’s Zermatt Neo paid them a visit and scarfed 10 of the scallion pancake sandwiches.

If you’re looking to get your hands on one of Liang’s scallion pancake sandwiches, better expect to queue and wait for a bit because each one is prepared upon order.

Anybody hungry for a scallion pancake sandwich? Because WE ARE.

Work Out At Singapore’s First 24-Hr Container Gym For Only $7/Hr

My 2018 New Year’s Resolution was to get fit and stay in shape.

I told myself,

“Alright, time to get a gym membership, get new workout clothes, a yoga mat and start fresh!”

This resolution of mine only stuck for a month because 1. gym memberships are CRAZY expensive and 2. all those hulk-like bodybuilders can be pretty intimidating.

Besides, all they do is grunt and hog the equipments 90% of the time.

Just recently, I was introduced to a 24 hour container gym that is automated and only charges you based on the hours you book your pod for. Talk about a dream come true.

Time To Get Fit Fam

The Gym Pod is Singapore’s first 24 hours automated container smart gym. It is designed such that you can enjoy an undisturbed and private workout at anytime of your choosing.

[caption id="attachment_36024" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Thanks to The Gym Pod, you can now have your very own private gym containers to exercise in. This is a complete dream come true for those who can’t deal with the crowd! No more competing for gym equipments with other gym goers and crazy gym memberships.

The Gym Pod doesn’t come with a buffet-spread worth of gym equipments but you can definitely get the basics such as a treadmill, dumbbells ranging from 1kg to 20kg, an adjustable bench as well as a guided weight-plate-loaded bar, also known as a Smith Machine.

[caption id="attachment_36025" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Their equipments may not be as fancy as compared to a typical gym, but they’re sufficient to provide you with enough challenging exercises to build your body in a safe way.

But the best part of this container gym is definitely the fact that they only charge you $7/hour. They don’t run on memberships so you no longer have to stress out about that gym membership you’re paying for every month.

First-timers get to enjoy a free hour of workout as well!

[caption id="attachment_36027" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Users are not allowed to stay in the gym for hours in one session which means you get guaranteed access to space and gym equipments at your booked timings. You get your own private space to workout and not be affected by crowds as the gym container only fits a max of 3 people at each time.

Open all day, every day, feel free to gym away past midnight if that’s what you like. Don’t worry, the gym is fully automated and monitored 24/7 for your safety.

The process is entirely fuss-free. After your successful booking, a SMS with a 4 digit passcode of The Gym Pod’s door at the location of your choosing will be sent to you.

At the time of your booking, simply go to The Gym Pod, key in the 4 digit passcode, and you can enter and start your workout!

[caption id="attachment_36026" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

While there’s only 1 pod at located at the JTC Launchpad (next to Timbre+) for now, the lovely people being The Gym Pod are working with authorities now to place more Gym Pods at convenient locations.

Or, you can drop them an email of your suggested location and who knows, you might just see a Gym Pod near your place.

Gymming in Singapore just got a whole lot easier and a lot less intimidating. So, who’s up for a good workout session?

Seoul Garden’s New Takeaway Kiosk Offers Korean-Inspired Sandwiches For Under $9

Thanks to the K-wave that swept the nation back in the early 2000s, Singapore is now home to many Korean food establishments, with many more continuing to pop up.

Korean food is also one of the more popular cuisines among Singaporeans, with the food portions being easily shareable and comforting. I mean, have you ever had Korean Army Stew? That’ll warm you right up on a rainy day.

Now, the Seoul Garden Group has come up with a new concept in the form of Seoul In A Sandwich.

The Taste Of Seoul In A Sandwich

This kiosk in the basement of Century Square might be small (okay maybe not that small), but the sandwiches sure come in big flavours.

[caption id="attachment_35841" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]korean food Image Credit: Seoul in a Sandwich[/caption]

As its name suggests, it serves up sandwiches with a Korean twist. Expect western sandwiches with Korean flavours.

Like this Bulgogi Cheesesteak ($8.50). It’s basically a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, but it uses grilled Bulgogi beef instead.

[caption id="attachment_37228" align="aligncenter" width="1464"]seoul in a sandwich Image Credit: Seoul in a Sandwich Facebook[/caption]

The result is a sweeter flavour than the usual savouriness you’d get from a Philly Cheesesteak, that’s further accentuated by the sautéed onions and peppers.

The Seoul Street Toast ($6.50) is a neat stack of onion and cabbage omelette, chicken ham, and sliced cheese on white bread.

[caption id="attachment_35843" align="aligncenter" width="645"]korean food Image Credit: Burppler Natalie Wong[/caption]

If you’re looking for something more comforting, how about going for the Kimchi Grilled Cheese ($5.50)? Cheddar and Mozzarella and Kimchi bits are sandwiched between 2 slices of white bread and grilled to cheese heaven.

[caption id="attachment_35844" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]korean food Image Credit: @seoulinasandwichsg[/caption]

But the most ambitious crossover sandwich has got to be the Army Stew-ich ($8.50). Just look at this monster of a sandwich.

[caption id="attachment_35845" align="aligncenter" width="1988"]korean food Image Credit: Seoul in a Sandwich[/caption]

This sandwich has stewed chicken hotdogs, chicken luncheon meat, tteokbokki, and daikon slaw slapped between ciabatta toasts. This already sounds filling to me.

On a side note, I’m bothered that they didn’t call this the “Bread-ae Jjigae”.

Seoul Sandwich has a few other sandwiches on their menu, including 2 sweet ones – the Matcha White Chocolate ($3.50) and the Citron Cream Cheese and Asian Pear ($4.50).

[caption id="attachment_35846" align="aligncenter" width="1988"]korean food Image Credit: Seoul in a Sandwich[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_35847" align="aligncenter" width="1988"]korean food Image Credit: Seoul in a Sandwich[/caption]

For first-timers, you can always approach any of the staff and they’ll give you recommendations on what to try.

As someone who loves their bread, and by extension, sandwiches, this makes me very happy.
