Traffic Forecasts For 2nd Link & Woodlands Causeway This Chinese New Year

If you’re heading to Johor Bahru (JB) this Chinese New Year, you’re definitely not alone. Welcome to the club for all motorists who will be utilizing the Causeway and the 2nd Link. Like Sun Tzu heading to war, it’s best to enter JB with a solid strategy…by arming yourself with these.

We’re referring to these amazing traffic jam forecasts we’ve uncovered! This way, you’ll be able to plan your entry into JB with maximum efficiency.

Be assured that this forecast is pretty accurate, as the reference data is based on the traffic statistics in Chinese New Year 2016.

2 days before Chinese New Year – 26 January 2017 (Thursday)

[caption id="attachment_21140" align="alignnone" width="660"] Causewayjam Wordpress[/caption]

As the eve of Chinese New Year is on 27 January 2017 (Friday), most Malaysians tend to return home the day before, which is 26 January 2017. This explains the spike in the traffic from Singapore to JB at both the Causeway and the 2nd Link, which will start to build up from 2 pm onwards. It’s best to be a bit more kiasu (aka wiser) and set off earlier if you can.

Eve of Chinese New Year – 27 January 2017 (Friday)

[caption id="attachment_21141" align="alignnone" width="660"] Causewayjam Wordpress[/caption]

On Chinese New Year’s eve, set your alarm clock to ring even earlier. As you can see from the graphs, traffic flowing into JB will build up as early as 4am. However, it’s possible that traffic may ease before evening as most people would already be at their reunion dinners.

Chinese New Year – 28, 29 January 2017 (Saturday, Sunday)

[caption id="attachment_21142" align="alignnone" width="660"] Causewayjam Wordpress[/caption]

In the mornings of the 1st and 2nd day of Chinese New Year, we can expect traffic to be at a low volume. However, the trends show that traffic will start increasing around noon at both sides of the border, probably due to Malaysians visiting Singapore or PRs returning home early.

Last day of the Chinese New Year Holiday – 30 January 2017 (Monday)

[caption id="attachment_21143" align="alignnone" width="660"] Causewayjam Wordpress[/caption]

On the last day of the holiday, it is expected that many will be returning to Singapore in preparation for work the next day. It appears that the 2nd  Link will be more affected as most of the people travelling back from the North of Malaysia will choose this route. In this case, it’s best to take the Causeway!

One day after the Chinese New Year Holiday – 31 January 2017 (Tuesday)

[caption id="attachment_21144" align="alignnone" width="660"] Causewayjam Wordpress[/caption]

Given that it’s a work day, most people would already have arrived home the day before (30 January 2017). However, it’s not uncommon for some to take a day off or two. As such, do note that there may be more traffic heading into Singapore after lunch hour, especially on the 2nd Link.

We hope that these forecasts do come in handy. Share this information with your friends and loved ones so they can enter JB or Singapore quickly and with ease.

Everyone gets frustrated in a jam, but don’t forget that safety is paramount. Drive safely!

Be MAD this Chinese New Year – Visitations to the Elderly in Redhill!

Chinese New Year is just over a week away, and everyone is getting ready. Bak kwa queues are snaking around the block and shopping malls are packed with chatty shoppers looking for CNY clothes.

For most of us, this festive period is one of great joy – spending time with beloved family members by gambling, laughing and drinking over delicious snacks. It is possibly one of the most awaited holidays of the year!

…Well, not for everyone though.

For some elderly folks, this time of the year is filled with dread. Many of them live alone, and the happy celebrations only serve to remind them of their loneliness.

In fact, elderly suicide rates increase during the festive period – not before, not after.

Well, this is a problem that MAD aims to resolve.

Never heard of MAD before? Well, it is a young non-for-profit company that helps youths unlock their fullest potential through a fusion of volunteering and leadership training. They carry out regular visitations to elderly folks as well as enriching training programmes for volunteers.

Every year, MAD organises Chinese New Year visitations to elderly folks staying in Redhill Estate. This year, the visitations will be held on 初一 (Day 1) and 初二 (Day 2), from 2pm – 4pm each day.

People of all ages from all walks of life are welcome to join! All you’ll need is some mandarins, friendliness and a desire to bring some joy into someone else’s life.

Volunteers will set off in groups to cover as many units as possible. If you are rather shy, fear not – conducting the visitations with fellow volunteers will help to alleviate your nervousness!

Elderly people are often stigmatised for being cold and mean, but don’t let that false belief deter you. You’ll be surprised to see how delighted many of them are to receive a CNY visit!

5 Awesome Places To Get Your Essential CNY Goodies

As Chinese New Year edges closer, it is perhaps mandatory to take a look at the eclectic delicacies every Singaporean should have stocked at home. Food plays a central role this holiday, so don’t forget to stock up on these 5 Chinese New Year goodies!

1) Old Seng Choong’s Nian Gao (Year Cake)

A gooey-brown and sweet confection, Nian Gao is a food prepared from glutinous rice. It is considered good luck to eat Nian Gao during this time as it is a homonym for “higher year”. As such, eating Nian Gao is a symbolism of raising oneself higher in each coming year.

We recommend Old Seng Choong’s rendition of this indispensable treat. It is made less sweet, which is perfect for the health-conscious.

2) Sunny Hills’ Pineapple Tart

A favorite among many, these bite-size pastries topped with pineapple jam is a rich and buttery confection. Pineapple is translated as ‘Ong Lai’ in Hokkien, which means “prosperity come”. Additionally, the yellowish-gold color of this delicacy signifies wealth.

We recommend SunnyHills’ inventive pineapple cake, made from freshly harvested pineapples imported from Taiwan. Flaky, chewy, and tasty with every bite.

3) Lim Chee Guan’s Bak Kwa

Bak Kwa is a thin and salty-sweet sheet of pork grilled to lovely caramelisation. This chewy snack has a rich history, Bak Kwa in Cantonese translates to “Long Yoke”, which means robust fortune. For the overly-superstitious, its bright red color is also auspicious and a good omen.

We recommend the Bak Kwa from household-name Lim Chee Guan. Amidst its competitors, Lim Chee Guan’s Bak Kwa remains the most tender and juicy.

4) Antoinette’s Love Letters

Don’t take this literally, of course. Love letters are flavorful cylindrical biscuits made from baking sugar, eggs, and coconut milk. Aside from their resemblance to long gold bars, these wafer-thin rolls got their name because they look like notes that lovers in the past wrote to each.

We recommend the Chocolate Love Letters from Antoinette. Lavish and exquisitely handcrafted, these sinful chocolate-infused wafers are nothing short of amazing.

5) King of Melon Seeds

A symbol of abundance and fertility, Melon seeds are widely eaten as a staple snack. Although there are many variations, the most notable ones during Chinese New Year are the black-colored and red-colored ones. “Gua Zi”, as it’s also known by, can imply “many sons” and “multiple coins”.

We recommend King of Melon Seeds, a popular online shop. With temporary festive retail booths located around Singapore, they offer a diverse selection of melon seeds with their most popular being the Famous Dragon Eye, which are known for their large size and thicker flesh.

FORT By Maison Ikkoku – An Exquisite 4 Course CNY Menu With A Twist

I could hardly contain my excitement when I was invited to FORT by Maison Ikkoku to savour its latest Four-Course Chinese New Year Menu, which was carefully whipped up and conceptualised by Executive Chef and Head Mixologist, Ethan Leslie Leong. Available from 1 Jan – 29 Feb 2016, the 4-course menu, set at $48++ per person, and an additional $40++ for four unique cocktails, boasts 4 dish that are named after auspicious Chinese wishes.

Having stepped foot to the newly-minted Pinacotheque De Paris at the historical site of Fort Canning Hill for the first time, I was immediately enchanted by FORT’s 30-seater restaurant bar. The place was adorned with luxurious velvet curtains, copper pipes & Edison filament bulbs, creating an ambience that epitomises both modern chic and ancient industrial.

Four-Course Chinese New Year Menu at FORT by Maison Ikkoku

Starting the prosperous dining journey was the 招财进宝 (Joyous Treasure): a delectable starter of pan-seared Hokkaido scallop, heaps of seaweed and a generous amount of golden roe, sprinkled all over with edible gold flakes. This was paired with喜气洋洋 (Jubilant Festivity), a sake infused with fragrant lemongrass that whets my appetite for the upcoming dish.

Second in the menu was the 好事连连 (Bountiful Harvest), a reinterpretation of the classic Roast Goose. This is certainly one of my favourites, being an avid Roast Goose fan. The puree, made using ingredients such as lotus, beet, sweet potatoes and kaffir lime, complements the Roast Goose so perfectly, both in terms of the palate and sight. This was paired with a visually stunning cocktail, 珠光寶氣 (Bejewelled Radiance), which was made with sparkling bubbly and floating daisy caviar.

Moving on to the mains, the auspiciously named 年年有余 (Sea of Fortune), features a succulent Salmon steak that was cooked to perfection. Presented on a bed of sweet, tart green apple, grapefruit and passion fruit, the dish was perfectly balanced with a copious dollop of salmon roe. The cocktail pairing was the carefully concocted 招財進寶 (Opulent Prosperity), made specially in-house with citrus sugar, whiskey and bitters.

The 金玉满堂 (Golden Royale) is such an adorable dessert that I couldn’t help falling in love with. Bursting with zesty and citrus aroma, this sorbet was served alongside frozen Kumquats. As I savoured the tantalising flavours and observed with fascination the gold colour of the dessert, I came to a realisation that the dish was so aptly named. I was then treated to a beautiful sight when the mixologist concocted 歩歩高升 (Passion Abundance), an earthy drink made with a base of spiced rum, a dash of Himalayan salt, a hint of caramel and passion fruit, that was served with heaps of dry ice, for that added drama.

Signature Ala Carte Dishes at FORT by Maison Ikkoku

Apart from the festive menu, I was kindly treated to one of its signature dishes from the ala carte menu – The Fort (4 pcs S$18++ / 8 pcs S$28++), which was a beautifully created spicy maguro hand-roll.

For Omakase Lovers

In addition, since 1 December 2015, FORT by Maison Ikkoku has launched their 12-course Omakase for just S$68++ per person. Diners will be taken through a gastronomical journey with dishes using the freshest ingredients presented in a form that brings out the best in them. Given the delightful experience with the 4-course menu, I would certainly visit Fort again, for the Omakase.
