Drown Your Problems At This Pharmacy-Themed Bar Cos There’s Nothing Alcohol Can’t Cure

Ann Siang Hill is chock full of bars and rooftop clubs that come alive at all times of the night, and it’ll take you forever to uncover the hidden gems. Here’s another one for you to add to your list of bars to visit – The Apothecary.

Oxwell and Co. has introduced a secret apothecary (read: bar) somewhere on the third floor of their shophouse, where you have to locate a hidden door to enter the cosy dining room.

The bar, simply called The Apothecary, specializes in elixirs, tonics and potions, with a promise to ‘treat all that ails you’. Side note: just in case you haven’t realized, their potions are age-old remedies of booze.

All sorts of remedy for everyday life problems

Don’t believe us yet? Here’s one to cure that cough virus going around – the Croak And Wheeze Relief. The Glenfiddich 12-year-old whisky is infused with honey sage syrup, orange bitters in a concoction that is sure to soothe any throat irritations.

If you have a headache from staring at a computer screen all day, take the Sailor Painkiller. The tonic uses Sailor Jerry Rum as a base, and has notes of orange, pineapple, cream of coconut, palm sugar and nutmeg. After a couple of shots, you won’t remember your day’s problems anymore.

[caption id="attachment_30099" align="alignnone" width="926"] Image Credit: The Apothcary[/caption]

The Butterfly Corpse Effect is an interesting mix of Hendrick’s, fortified wine, blood orange and pea flower tea for a herbal remedy. It didn’t escape our notice that gin and wine both have health benefits if taken in moderation.

A playground for dinner and drinks

[caption id="attachment_30098" align="alignnone" width="930"] Image Credit: The Apothecary[/caption]

The medieval pharmacy-themed bar is filled with mismatched vintage bobs and ends, transporting you back to the primitive times. It really feels like you’re having a sneaky cocktail, or two, after work in the intimate room big enough for only 12 people.

Other than drinks, there are also bar bites like Salt And Pepper Squid and Crispy Salmon Fingers and Tartare Sauce that you can snack on the road to recovery. Head back down to the dining restaurant on the first floor for more substantial fare.

If you start to feel too claustrophobic after a couple of drinks, just head up a two floors to the rooftop bar that is also part of Oxwell and Co to continue your night with a breath of fresh air.

Are you feeling better yet?

3. Employees Only (Cocktail Bar)

What?? A craft cocktail bar from New York is in Singapore?

[caption id="attachment_17693" align="alignnone" width="597"]Image source: asia.cocktails Image source: asia.cocktails[/caption]

Yes, and it’s one with unpretentious NY vibes, buzzing energy, shoulder shaking music, and mighty fine cocktail techniques (that’s what they’re famed for).

The place can get really busy but trust us, it’s worth the wait.

4. Le Binchotan

What do you get when you combine French and Japanese cuisine? Le Binchotan!

[caption id="attachment_17697" align="alignnone" width="594"]Image source: Franny Wanny Image source: Frannywanny[/caption]

Named after the white charcoal used to smoke French-Japanese tapas, this super chic eatery dishes some of the best skewers in town.

There’ll be 10% off selected sake bottles in conjunction with the Bloc party! Now, that calls for a Kampai!

5. Burger Joint

Dubbed the best burger in NYC, Burger Joint is all about yummy burgers done to perfection!

[caption id="attachment_17698" align="alignnone" width="480"]Image source: Kendricljx Image source: Kendricljx[/caption]

From cheese to portobello, and of course, bacon burger, their patties are extremely juicy and well seasoned. Top if off with craft beer (there’s a selection of 16 taps!) and that’s how every day should end.

6. Maggie Joan’s

Looking for Maggie Joan’s can be a lil tricky. It’s an underground Mediterranean restaurant located in the alleyway just off Gemmill Lane (literally a hidden gem).

[caption id="attachment_17699" align="alignnone" width="601"]Image source: glen_ballis_autopiloton Image source: glen_ballis_autopiloton[/caption]

Famed for their cosy ambience and gastronomical food, every dish here is so pretty that you’ll want to feed your camera first before digging in.

7. Gemmills

Gemmills has a split personality – it’s a cafe by day and a wine bar by night.

[caption id="attachment_17700" align="alignnone" width="597"]Image source: The Silver Chef Image source: The Silver Chef[/caption]

Expect a range of fresh pastries, sandwiches and coffee during the day and once the sun is down, bring the vinos out!

8. Birds of a Feather

Sichuan food can be a little intimidating. Just thinking about the flower pepper gives us chills!

[caption id="attachment_17702" align="alignnone" width="540"]Image source: Bing_leow Image source: Bing_leow[/caption]

But at Birds of Feather, the Sichuan-ness actually enhances the flavours of the Western cuisine served. And the ambience there will make you feel like you’re in Chengdu… well, minus the giant panda bears!

Party All Night

The event might start at 3pm, but once the sun is down (10pm onwards), step into Ding Dong as the playful restaurant space is reimagined into a retro dance floor on this day!

[caption id="attachment_17705" align="alignnone" width="776"]Image source: Ding Dong Image source: Ding Dong[/caption]

Bust a move to 80s and 90s hits at the afterparty and get a Ding Dong Daiquiri or two while you hit that high!

Chocolate Pinot & Apple Miso? 5 Drinks At Operation Dagger That’ll Wow Your Taste Buds!

In the discreet corner of a street lies a small, unsigned building. After much fumbling, the heavy glass door creaks open and you make your way carefully across the unwashed floors.

Groping around in the semi-darkness, you head down a dingy staircase and a steel door emerges. Holding your breath, you push it open.

Welcome to Halloween Horror Ni- uh Operation Dagger.

[caption id="attachment_16223" align="alignnone" width="825"]Source: slomonk.com Source: slomonk.com[/caption]

Voted Best New Bar at last year’s Singapore Bar Awards, Operation Dagger is an elusive bar located within the basement.

This bar is in fact, so elusive there is no sign of it. Literally.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Ann Siang Hill however, Operation Dagger serves as a great watering hole for the work weary.

A cocktail bar that emphasises on the experimentation of flavours and textures, the bar has taken to replacing traditional spirits with their very own concoctions.

We had the opportunity of savouring five of the bar’s signatures drinks and boy were we taken away by the experience.

1. Apple Miso

An interesting combination of rum, fermented apple, miso caramel and sesame, the Apple Miso happens to be, at the moment, the favorite drink of co-founder Luke Whearty.

[caption id="attachment_16217" align="alignnone" width="630"] Source: Operation Dagger[/caption]

Garnished with a bar spoon made of distilled toasted sesame spirit and toffee crisp seasoned gomashio, this Japanese inspired drink we say, definitely isn’t for anyone who dislikes sesame.

2. The Egg

A favourite amongst the regulars, The Egg consists of cured egg yolk, vanilla and sugar that are shaken and strained into a ceramic egg cup before being placed in a jar of smoked hay and star anise.

[caption id="attachment_16221" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Source: lbb.com Source: lbb.com[/caption]

The result?

A slightly intense drink with a custard-like texture that reminds us, unsurprisingly, of everyone’s favourite salted egg yolk.

3. Chocolate Pinot

If you’re a wine person, we’d recommend you to go for the Chocolate Pinot. That’s right –  Chocolate. Friggin’. Wine.

[caption id="attachment_16222" align="alignnone" width="846"]Source: shutterstock Source: shutterstock[/caption]

Infused with raw cacao and vanilla, this drink, for starters, smells heavenly. As both a chocolate and wine fan, we’ve got nothing to complain about.

4. Fallen Fruit

Our favourite drink of the night? The Fallen Fruit.

A mix of wine, caramel, vanilla, fresh pears and curry leaf (say whaaaat), this drink is slow cooked via a sous vide method before being filtered overnight.

[caption id="attachment_16220" align="alignnone" width="750"]Source: iwanimawocha.com Source: iwanimawocha.com[/caption]

Served in an adorable pear ceramic mug and vanilla bean straw, this refreshing drink is a dream. Side note, we bit into the straw just to see what vanilla bean tastes like and no, it wasn’t pretty.

5. Hot & Cold

Last but definitely not the least, we have the Hot & Cold, a Pina Colada-ish drink that replaces rum with tequila.

[caption id="attachment_16219" align="alignnone" width="947"] Source: Operation Dagger[/caption]

Topped with a layer of warm white chocolate and coconut foam, this dessert drink, we think, will be popular with the ladies. A taste of both hot and cold, this one ranks a close second on our list.

With unconventional combinations of textures and flavours, Operation Dagger definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted.

If you’re looking to broaden your drinking horizons or are looking for a fun date idea, a night at this cocktail bar will just be the thing for you.
