1. Koh Grill & Sushi Bar

Synonymous with Shiok Maki, Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is nestled within Wisma Atria’s Food Republic. Shiok Maki ($16.80) may not be the cheapest dish on the menu, but it’s worth every dollar. The first version has lightly roasted salmon wrapped around avocado and charcoaled eel. The second version has the same salmon wrapped around fried prawns instead. Shiok! They also serve affordable mains like Seafood Fried Rice ($10), Yaki Udon ($10), and Garlic Fried Rice ($5).

2. Gyoza-ya

Gyozas galore! Gyoza-ya is a casual dining restaurant that serves up Japanese dumplings of minced meat or vegetables wrapped in thin dough skins. They are best known for their Yaki Pork Gyoza ($4.80). It is known by some to be the #1 Gyoza in Singapore. There are also Vegetable Gyozas ($4.80) and Red King Crab ones ($7.80). It’s your choice if you want them steamed or pan-fried! If you’re looking for something more filling, Jya Jya Men (thick noodles with minced pork and miso) goes for $6.50, and Kaisen (Seafood) Ramen goes for $9.80.

3. Tsuru-Koshi

Located at the basement of Takashimaya Shopping Centre, this open concept restaurant has a menu that starts from $4 for Mini Udon and $5 for Mini Kakiage Don (rice bowl with vegetable tempura). Full-sized dishes range from $6.50 to $14. With silky noodles and a light yet flavourful broth, their Ebi Tempura Udon ($10) is a classic favourite.

4. Yonehachi

Like Tsuru-Koshi, Yonehachi is also found at the basement of Takashimaya Shopping Centre. They specialise in Okowa, steamed glutinous rice with different ingredients mixed into it. For their Miso Soup Set Meal, red bean okowa goes for $6.80, while a choice of scallops or chestnuts costs $7.80. A Fried Chicken Okowa Set Meal (okowa, fried chicken, and miso soup) starts from $8.80.

5. Sushi Express

With every plate costing a mere $1.50, it is no wonder Sushi Express is a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Singapore. Their 12 outlets islandwide stand testament to that! A wide assortment of Japanese food is available, ranging from sashimi (salmon, tuna, and tilapia) and sushi (nigri, gunkan, and maki) to side dishes (such as miso soup and seasoned octopus), and even dessert! Green tea and wet tissue is complimentary at Sushi Express.

6. Ajisen Ramen

Originating from Japan, Ajisen Ramen is a fast-food chain that sells, you guessed it, ramen! An Ajisen store is easily identifiable from the cute little girl on their company logo. You can get affordable set meals here from $13.90, with each comprising a bowl of ramen, a side dish, and a cup of green tea or ice lemon tea. If you just want to satisfy your ramen craving, you can get them a la carte. Vegetable Ramen and Spicy Cha Shu Ramen cost $10 each, Scallop Ramen and Seafood Ramen $11, and Pork Curry Ramen $12.

With Makisan, creating your own sushi is no longer a dream! Sushi rolls and salads are fully customisable. Egg wrap or seaweed, brown rice or white rice, yuzu sesame or chilli crab sauce, the list goes on and on. Little San Sushi offers you the choice of 1 wrap, rice, 3 essentials (ingredients for your sushi), 1 sprinkle (a topping), and 1 sauce for $7.90, and Mega San Sushi (a wrap, rice, 5 essentials, 1 special, 1 sprinkle and 1 sauce) is $9.90.
