McDonald’s Expands Its Menu With Chocolate Pie And Fish & Fries – And We’re Lovin’ It
McDonald’s has always been a constant in our lives. Introducing seasonal flavours and menus, some hits, some misses.
But ever since people discovered that the McDonald’s in South Korea, Japan and Bangkok sell a sinful AF Chocolate Pie, we’ve all been a little (actually, very) salty that we don’t have it in Singapore.
[caption id="attachment_33316" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Roy Cruz Facebook[/caption]But that’s not going to be true for long. YAS GURL, McDonald’s Singapore is fighting the good fight and they’re bringing the Chocolate Pie to Singapore!
Going Loco For Cocoa
It’s about time the Chocolate Pie made its way to Singapore.
After all, we’ve been just contending with the signature Apple Pie (which is our favourite to be honest) and its other seasonal variants which are a little more lacklustre and don’t really leave much of an impression.
McDonald’s announced on their Facebook page that the Chocolate Pie will be included on McDonald’s Singapore menus starting on 1 March 2018.

[caption id="attachment_33317" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @mikemastermike[/caption]Check out that molten lava chocolate filling. OH MY GOD. McDonald’s better deliver because the disappointment is going to be massive if the filling is minimal.
That’s not all, they also introduced a new main, The Fish And Fries that was previously available in McDonald’s Philippines and Malaysia. Because Fish and Chips is too common a name.

Listen to that crunch though.
We anticipate that the queues at McDonald’s islandwide are going to be insane.

[caption id="attachment_33300" align="aligncenter" width="1740"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]If you’re planning on where to have brunch this weekend, this hidden gem in Little India is your go-to brunch spot with your amigos.
Run by the lovely folks behind The Black Hole Group who operates Working Title, Afterwit, The Mad Sailors and Santap, you know the food served at The Great Mischief is gonna be amazing.
Gather Your Companeros
Located right smack in backpacker’s haven, The Great Mischief is a cafe located conveniently at the lobby of The Great Madras Hotel, with open air dining and al-fresco seats.
[caption id="attachment_33301" align="aligncenter" width="1962"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]The Great Mischief serves some seriously amazing Spanish tapas ideal for sharing and gathering.
Even though we have zero idea on how to pronounce at least half of the food items on here, they all sound bloody amazing. Just take a look at it!
[caption id="attachment_35348" align="aligncenter" width="1954"] Image Credit: The Great Mischief[/caption]There’s a variety of tapas for you to choose from at very affordable prices. Perfect for all you individuals going on a budget but still want to enjoy quality food!
The Croquetas ($9) is what we describe as love at first bite. Choose between pulled beef or chopped mushrooms in breaded smashed potatoes.
[caption id="attachment_33303" align="aligncenter" width="1442"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]Another hit on their menu is the Gambas Al Ajillo ($12). These prawns are perfectly pan fried and tossed in their homemade garlic sauce. These prawns really packs a punch of flavours.
[caption id="attachment_33304" align="aligncenter" width="1442"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]They’ve recently revealed a Raciones menu as well! It is not typical to order raciones by yourself; the portions are far too large to be enjoyed without company. To do so would really limit the variety of what you are trying since you are unlikely to have the appetite to eat that much – but you do you!
The Filet De Tonyina ($24) is a yellowfin tuna with a herbed breadcrumb crust served with mix greens.
[caption id="attachment_35346" align="aligncenter" width="1348"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]This next one is perhaps our favourite on their menu. The Fideuà De Marisc ($22) is a squid ink paella pasta cooked in a seafood broth with prawns and aioli.
[caption id="attachment_35347" align="aligncenter" width="1352"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]Their new raciones are made for sharing, but will you want to after looking at those images?
What’s a good meal without desserts? The Churro Con Chocolat ($8) comes with 2 perfectly fried churros rolled in cinnamon sugar served with a dark chocolate dip.
[caption id="attachment_35351" align="aligncenter" width="1352"] Image Credit: @thegreatmischief[/caption]Complete your meal with their mocktails such as the Startled ($9) which is an interesting concoction of cinnamon, egg white, kaya, lemon, milk.

This Aroi Mak Nasi Ambeng Swaps Rendang And Achar For Green Curry And Mango Salad
As a proud Malay millennial, I get extremely excited when I hear these two words: “nasi” and “ambeng”.
Nasi Ambeng (pronounced Nasi Um-Bng) is a classic Javanese dish that is usually shared between 3 to 4 people.
The dish consists of a mountain of rice in the middle of the platter, surrounded by other traditional Javanese dishes such as ayam masak lemak, fried tempeh, begedil, urap, sambal goreng and beef rendang (which is technically Minangkabau but let’s not get into that).
You’ll find plenty of restaurants serving this traditional dish. However, the version at Sticky Rice stands out from the rest with their Thai Style Nasi Ambeng.
Old Dish, New Flavours
The Rice Platter ($28.50), as the Nasi Ambeng dish is named at Sticky Rice, comes with a generous portion of fragrant steamed white rice, fried beef strips, mango salad, fish cakes, spring rolls, green curry chicken, stir-fried vegetables, and “son-in-law” eggs.
[caption id="attachment_33229" align="aligncenter" width="768"] Image Credit: Sticky Rice Facebook[/caption]If you’re wondering what the “son-in-law” eggs are, you’re not the only one.
This egg dish is also known as Khai Luk Khoei. It’s basically hard boiled eggs that are deep fried so they have a crispy golden skin. It is served with a sweet-sour sauce – made from tamarind and fish sauce.
This Rice Platter also comes with a small bowl of Thai Green Curry, which in my dictionary, is the most essential dish in Thai cuisine. The green curry is mild and light which helps in balancing out the flavours of all the other dishes.
It also comes with a green mango salad which ties the entire dish together with it’s tangy and spicy flavour.
This platter is perfect shared among 2-3 people. If you’re feeling a little peckish, go alone. We dare you.
However, if you’re not looking for a heavy afternoon lunch, you can also opt for the Pad Thai Platter ($28.50) which basically replaces the rice with a mountain of chicken pad thai.
[caption id="attachment_33230" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Sticky Rice Facebook[/caption]This platter comes with a side of omelette strips, crispy chicken skin, prawns, bean sprouts, peanuts, lime and chilli powder. All you have to do is mix everything together and enjoy!
If you’re not up for a huge feast, you can order individual dishes from their menu as well. Best part, they have vegan options for all you vegans out there. Now everyone can enjoy quality food together.
[caption id="attachment_33232" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Image Credit: @shazzharif[/caption]We highly recommend you to take a trip to Sticky Rice for a taste of Thailand here in Singapore. Aroi mak!

Singapore’s First Vegan Ice Cream Joint Takes The ‘Guilty’ Away From Pleasure
If you’re like me and you ate your entire body weight in steamboat and treats over the Chinese New Year break, it’s time to get back in shape!
But who says you can’t enjoy a little sweat treat every now and then.
Over at Brownice, they serve up one of the best vegan ice creams in Singapore and best part, it’s completely guilt-free!
You Can Have Your Ice Cream And Eat It Too
Being vegan or lactose-intolerant, you probably know how frustrating it is to be restricted from ice creams.
Fret not, Brownice serves vegan-friendly ice cream that uses brown rice as a substitute. Yes, you read that right. No dairy or eggs in this one!
[caption id="attachment_33210" align="aligncenter" width="2000"] Image Credit: Brownice Ice Cream Facebook[/caption]If you’re expecting a rich gelato texture, unfortunately Brownice’s ice cream is less creamy and more icy (think of a cross between sorbet and ice cream).
While it is texturally lighter on the palate, it certainly does not lack flavour.
Looking for something light and refreshing for those hot sunny days? Their fruit based flavours such as the Sunny Strawberry Fields (from $3.50 per scoop) will be the choice to go for.
[caption id="attachment_33213" align="alignnone" width="1312"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]For creamier flavours, you should definitely try out their Black Sesame, Gila Gula Melaka and The Perfect Matcha.
Even better, treat yourself and go for the Waffle-licious Ice Cream ($8 with a scoop of ice cream).
[caption id="attachment_33214" align="alignnone" width="1304"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]Brownice prides in the fact that their ice cream contains less than 3% fat and boasts a calorie count of 80-140kcal per scoop. How’s that for your waistline?
Their outlet at East Coast Road serves a variety of Italian fare as well. Brownice is here to prove that Italian food can still be enjoyed if you’re vegan.
They serve one of the best vegan friendly pizzas ($14-$19) I’ve tried to date. You can barely taste the difference from your traditional Italian pizza.
[caption id="attachment_33215" align="alignnone" width="1308"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]The pastas ($10-$18) have great flavours too although most are tomato-based. Their Lasagna ($17), which features layers of diced eggplants and tofu in a thick and creamy tomato ragu sauce, is a crowd favourite!
[caption id="attachment_33216" align="alignnone" width="1308"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]Brownice has got our stamp of approval if you’re looking at vegan-friendly options. We’re surprised this place hasn’t opened all over Singapore yet.
Dear Brownice owners, if you’re reading this, please open 30 more branches all over Singapore. We’re more than happy to throw all our angbao money just for your ice cream!

9. Moosh.sg
Ever since Mr Softee decided to mysteriously disappear from Singapore, there has been a void in our bellies, where soft serves used to be. Sure, Mcdonald’s ice creams were a substitute for a while but we’re craving for more exciting flavours.
Meet Moosh Softserve.
Recently opened at Haji Lane, this Muslim-owned, Halal soft serve ice cream shop has been making waves.
A local favourite and definite must-try is their Ondeh Ondeh Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large), a concoction that uses Gula Melaka soft serve ice cream topped with desiccated coconut, toasted coconut flakes, and drizzled with pandan fudge sauce.
[caption id="attachment_33172" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Image Credit: Burpple User Brian Xavier[/caption]The soft serve might get a little jelak halfway through, just mix the pandan fudge well and it’ll be fine.
Other interesting flavours include the Nutella Brownies Cheesecake Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large) and the Apple Crumble Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large).
Don’t say we bojio, but this soft serve is legit.

Located in the Arab Street precinct, Atap Bar will take you back to the old days. Its cosy interior, patterned floors and swing chairs will remind you of your grandma’s kampung.
This family-friendly establishment serves up non-alcoholic, localised bespoke mocktails. With drinks inspired by Malay folklore and traditional songs like “Rasa Sayang”, there’s bound to be a drink for everyone here.
[caption id="attachment_32920" align="aligncenter" width="830"] Image Credit: Atap Bar Facebook[/caption]The “Rasa Sayang” ($14) is a blend of rose infused water mixed with strawberry, mint leaves and more! Just like the folk song itself, this drink captures much of the Malay character.
If you’re feeling a little hungry, they serve up bar snacks such as Honey Wings ($10). Oh and did you know they serve Keropok Lekor ($8) as well? Talk about the perfect snack.
[caption id="attachment_32924" align="aligncenter" width="756"] Image Credit: Atap Bar Facebook[/caption]If that isn’t already convincing enough, Atap Bar also provides games you used to play back in primary school. River Hongbao 2018 The cafe will be completely redecorated with the Care Bears. While it doesn’t exactly resemble Care-a-lot, this will do. As with all past iterations of character cafes, what everyone is looking forward to is the themed food, and the Care Bears don’t intend to lose out to the Sanrio characters. For the pasta lovers, there’s the Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90) which is a classic Pomodoro spaghetti with shitake mushrooms, cherry tomato confit, and parmesan cheese. If you’re looking for something more substantial, there’s the Cheer-Up Chicken Katsu ($21.90). Were you expecting a chicken cutlet? Because we were. But it’s actually a burger! A juicy Japanese katsu chicken slathered generously with teriyaki sauce is sandwiched between soft burger buns, topped with a sunny-side up and cheddar cheese, served with a garden salad, crisp fries and mushroom soup. Every past character cafe has had their own version of Kumoya’s desserts and drinks and this is no exception. Go for the Rainbow Garden Strawberry Parfait ($18.90) – Strawberry Hokkaido soft serve is served with vanilla pudding, meringue drops, fresh fruits, chocolate sable, a rainbow candy strip and mixed berries sauce. That’s not all. End off your meal with their Calpis drinks or special Care Bears teas. The Cute Cuddly Calpis ($11.90) combines Berry flavoured Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream, while the Magic Mango Strawberry ($11.90) uses Mango Strawberry Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream. If you grew up with Care Bears like us, this is one character pop-up cafe that you shouldn’t miss! Available from 1 February 2018 till 31 March 2018, don’t miss out on a chance to dine in Care-a-lot! Care Bears x Kumoya Summer Hill is the newest restaurant to pop up in Sunset Way, serving up affordable French cuisine without GST and service charge. This cosy bistro serves up simple French fare that is oh-so-simple, yet oh-so-good. Dishes on their Special board as well as sides are rotated weekly so your meal there is always different and exciting. Must-tries include their Poulet Roti ($23 for half, $45 for whole), the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar ($25), Croque Monsieur ($17.50), and the Orange & Rosemary-Scented Olive Oil Cake With Cream ($3). The Poulet Roti uses hormone and antibiotic-free chicken that has been marinated with herb butter before it’s roasted to perfection. The result is roast chicken that is juicy yet still retains its skin’s crispiness. If you’re not a fan of chicken, then the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar is the main dish for you. Tangy, tender, and satisfying. The mustard and sage sauce provides a contrast of flavours, cutting through the heaviness of the tender pork so that you won’t feel jelak. The Croque Monsieur is basically a levelled-up ham and cheese sandwich. Ham, Swiss cheese, bechamel sauce, and dijon mustard sandwiched between 2 thick slices of grilled sourdough bread. Sounds like heaven to us. That’s not all, more Swiss cheese is garnished on the top of the sandwich for more cheesy goodness. If you’re a fan of French cuisine, or just appreciate comfort food, then you need to drop by Summer Hill next. Summer Hill Hidden away in the suburbs of Jurong West, is OH MY MANGO dessert bar. This unassuming dessert bar serves up various mango-flavoured food, and one of those is a mean Mango Shibuya Toast ($10.90). Soft and fluffy on the inside, while toasted and crispy on the outside, the shibuya toast is topped with mango ice cream, diced mango, almond flakes, drizzled generously with mango sauce, and served with a dollop of whipped cream. This is basically a mango overload but not in a bad way. If you’re a big fan of mango, you have to try this. OH MY MANGO dessert bar also has a rather extensive menu of mango-flavoured drinks. A hot favourite among customers is the Matcha Mango Latte ($5.90). A bottom layer of mango bits, followed by a layer of milk, topped off with a layer of matcha. This tri-coloured creation might seem like a weird flavour combination, but the slight bitterness of matcha cuts through the sweetness and sometimes too jelak taste of the mango and milk, resulting in a rather interesting flavour. OH MY MANGO dessert bar is constantly adding new desserts and drinks to their menu, so keep checking their Facebook page to stay up to date! OH MY MANGO Dessert Bar W Market is back again with their CNY Pop-up Market! A Care Bear-Themed Cafe Is Springing Up In S’pore And It Will Awaken Your Inner Child
Singapore has seen so many character cafes pop up in the recent years, it’s almost as if it’s an elaborate scheme to get us to keep throwing money in pursuit of that perfect Instagram shot.
Of course, we all know this. But that doesn’t stop us from visiting these character cafes when they pop up in succession.
Once again, Kumoya has partnered with Little Miss Bento and American Greeting to bring us Care Bears x Kumoya, a Care Bears-themed cafe.
Step Into Care-a-lot, Home Of The Care Bears
From 1 February to 31 March 2018, Kumoya will be transformed into Care-a-lot, the home of the Care Bears.
