The Circuit Breaker Life: 10 Things You Never Knew You Were Thankful For

circuit breaker life singapore

Staying home during this time has made us crave face-to-face human interaction or yearn to go back to our usual routines.

In a state of boredom, people are forced to get creative. We have quickly changed up our routines such as converting our gym sessions to home workouts, or even achieving new goals such as learning a new skill online or finishing a book that we read halfway.

But there are also some who have thought of really bizarre things. For instance, a Redditor built a life-sized Jewel Changi Airport in Minecraft to curb his boredom.

Another Redditor even came up with a ‘Stay Home MRT Line’ to sum up a day of his life.

We may be stuck at home but that doesn’t stop people from thinking of creative ways to spend their Circuit Breaker life differently. One thing’s for sure though, here are 10 things that we’ll definitely miss once the Circuit Breaker is over.

1. Wake Up Later, Wear PJs All Day

Working from home brings about many perks for the lazybones.

Firstly, you get to snooze a little longer because we no longer have to be out the door by 8am to catch the train. If work starts at 9am, we can afford to wake up five minutes before and skip the shower.

Who cares if you’ve not brushed your teeth or if you’re wearing pyjamas to work?

Ultimately, this saves us a lot of time. You also do not have to style your hair or think about what to wear every day. Doing work in comfortable PJs and messy hair all day is a true luxury that comes with working from home.

2. Home-cooked Meals

As we shift to working from home amid this Circuit Breaker, we have more autonomy over managing our schedules and taking short breaks to recharge ourselves. Our mornings and evenings are now longer as we don’t have to spend time commuting to and from work.

With these extended pockets of time, many have turned to indulging in a hearty breakfast in the mornings or going for a quick run (while observing safe distancing measures, of course!). Throughout the work day, we may even steal some time to take a power nap, have a quick work-out session or even enjoy a tea break.

These simple activities definitely aid in relaxation and revitalisation. After all, when you are well-rested, your productivity will also increase.

4. Ability To Multi-Task During Work Meetings

Now that we are working from home, we have embraced video-conferencing platforms like Zoom and Skype to host online meetings instead.

The good thing about online meetings is that we can ‘multi-task’ and get other tasks done while paying attention to the meeting. Multi-tasking is not necessarily a bad thing as we can get more things done with pockets of free time.

5. Free Workout Sessions

Even though physical gyms, studios and sports facilities have been closed during this period of time, you can still get your work-out sessions.

SportSG’s Get Active TV has teamed up with some of the fitness instructors in Singapore to stream live workouts on Facebook and YouTube.

On Instagram, many influencers have also been churning out live-streaming sessions, hosting workshops and activities for their followers to join in the fun.

Local songbirds Narelle Kheng and Sandra Riley Tang of Sam Willows, for one, will be conducting a workout session via Instagram (IG) Live (do keep a lookout on their IG on April 30) as part of the #stayhomeforSG challenge, so stay tuned for it! If you would like to find inspiration on things to do at home, check out the hashtag #stayhomeforSG on social media channels to see what everyone else is doing!

You can also try to complete this month-long workout plan as part of the Box Office Fitness Circuit Breaker challenge, which includes a mix of HIIT, strength, cardio and recovery exercises, to help stay in shape.

6. Access To More Free Online Resources

As Singaporeans, it’s in our nature to love free things.

Since lockdowns have begun in various countries, virtual classes have erased geographical boundaries, with major businesses rolling out free online classes.

A few paid TV operators such as StarHub and Singtel have extended a free preview of their TV channels to curb your boredom during this time.Meanwhile, Audible has made their library of books and audio stories free to stream following this COVID-19 outbreak.

Image Credit: PA courses on Facebook

People’s Association (PA) is also conducting free ‘live’ 30-minute classes on their social media platforms for affected PA courses and activities. It conducts various classes from cooking to calligraphy, so here’s your chance to learn a new skill!

Local actress Jeanette Aw and Miele Singapore’s Chef Lennard Yeong also filmed an Instagram Live video together last week while they cooked and baked from their home kitchens. Missed it? Fret not! You can watch their completed 20-minute cooking session on both Jeanette’s and Lennard’s IG accounts.

The list of free resources is not exhaustive, so do take advantage of them while you can.

7. More Family Bonding Time

As most of your family members are now working from home, this means that you will be seeing more of them, giving you the opportunity for more family time. Who knows, you might even learn something new about them!

Beyond that, working from home together means that you can afford to have meals together, for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Since everyone shares the same working schedule (sort of), there’s no reason to miss out on family meals anymore.

Having meals together means you can get to stay updated on each other’s lives over conversations, which helps to strengthen ties and build better relationships.

8. Hanging Out With Friends (Virtually) Anytime

Packed and conflicting schedules have sometimes made it difficult for you and your friends to find a meeting time that works for everyone.

Since we are now in Circuit Breaker mode, everyone is practically confined to their houses. Besides working from home, we don’t have much else on our schedule so there is technically no excuse to not hang out with friends anymore, albeit virtually.

Take this chance to catch up with your friends and make up for lost time. Have a lunch date over video calls, host game nights on apps like Houseparty, or even sing karaoke in a virtual KTV room on apps like Quan Min Party.

If both you and your friends like playing online games together, consider checking out the DOTA and FIFA livestreams where gamers battle it out.

Happening across two channels on May 2, from 12pm to 4pm, watch Sylvia from Night Owl Cinematics compete against local pro-gamer iceiceice in a DOTA game! You can catch Sylvia on NOCplays YouTube channel or iceiceice over on Twitch in the livestream as they battle it out.

If you are a FIFA fan, be sure to catch local actors Charlie Goh and Noah Yap attempt to score against Hibidi, a local FIFA pro-gamer. The livestreams will be held on May 3, 8pm, on Charlie and Noah’s IG and Hibidi’s Facebook page.

9. Supporting Local F&B Businesses

While F&B businesses see their sales take a hit as the dining-in ban has kicked in, they can only count on takeaway and delivery orders.

There is no better time than now to do our part to help local F&B establishments tide over this difficult period of time and #supportLocal by buying from them.Through the ‘Hawkers United – Dabao 2020’ Facebook group initiative, we have seen how Singaporeans come together to preserve the hawker culture and help our favourite stalls to continue their business.

10. Being At Home To Receive Your Parcels

One of the things we would appreciate about staying at home is being there to receive our online deliveries in person. It is also something to look forward to while we are at home.

Nothing beats the happiness and excitement we get when the delivery man appears on our doorstep with a box. For now, we no longer have to wait in anticipation to arrive home to unwrap our online purchases – we can do it instantly.

This is one of the little things that we would be thankful for when the Circuit Breaker life is over.

Stay Home For Singapore

COVID-19 has made us realise the importance of keeping ourselves active, having a work-life balance and staying connected with our family and friends.

Even after the Circuit Breaker has ended, we should not cease practising these important and positive habits.

Everyone, including you and I, has a critical part to play in fighting the battle against COVID-19, so we need to be socially responsible and take precautions to help safeguard one another and save lives.

While it’s indeed a tough time for the nation, it’s imperative to stay positive. Just because we are encouraged to stay at home, it does not mean that we cannot continue to stay active and engaged, or care for one another.

Join the SG United Telegram channel to receive the latest updates on COVID-19 content and ongoing community initiatives. Also, share what you are doing at home during this Circuit Breaker period on social media by tagging #stayhomeforSG and #SGUnited. You never know – you may inspire others with ideas on what they can do at home!

Remember, Singapore can pull through this only if we do it together! #stayhomeforSG #SingaporeTogether #SGUnited

Need A Quick Workout? This Bouldering Gym In The CBD Lets You Sweat It Out From $30/Entry

My arms are sore and my ankle is about to give way. Yet I can’t let go. Not unless I want to free fall three metres or so on to the, admittedly, cushy crash pad below – but I’m too much of a wimp to do that.

I’m halfway through a bouldering problem in Boulder Movement and despite the aches, I can already see the appeal of this sport. Bouldering is very much like rock climbing, except the former is stripped down to its bare essentials –  no ropes and no harness to break your fall. All you need is a good pair of climbing shoes, a bag of chalk and a whole lot of guts to take on the bouldering problem.

For someone who is deathly afraid of heights, I thought, “this is not going to end well.”

Climb To A Better You

Climbing has hit new heights in Singapore as more people are getting into the physically challenging sport, thanks to a growing number of commercial climbing facilities sprouting up across the island.

Initially thought of as ‘dangerous’ and only for the adrenaline junkies, it’s quickly catching on as the activity of choice for the regular folk looking for an exciting alternative to getting that much sought after full body workout.

[caption id="attachment_38382" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]boulder movement Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Conveniently located 5 minutes from Tanjong Pagar MRT, Boulder Movement is the one and only climbing gym that is located in the CBD. Founded by a group of friends who are climbing enthusiasts, the gym positions itself as a beginner-friendly (we tested it!) bouldering facility with over 30 metres of wall lengthwise with 100 square metres of climbing surface.

The walls are no higher than 4 metres which sounds short, but trust us, it’s certainly high enough to experience the thrill of climbing without any safety gears.

[caption id="attachment_38377" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]boulder movement Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The bouldering problems are categorised by different climbing abilities: White tags 1-6 are for beginners, Blue tags 7-15 for intermediates and Pink tags 16-27+ are for the advanced. They refresh the climbs every week (at least 14 new problems) so you’ll always find new challenges waiting for you!

[caption id="attachment_38380" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]boulder movement Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

For first timers, you can sign up for the Basics of Bouldering class which is a 60 minute crash course to get you acquainted with the sport. There are also foundational classes for those with prior climbing experience looking to refine their upper and lower body techniques before moving on to the intermediate classes.

[caption id="attachment_38384" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]boulder movement Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

As the name suggests, Boulder Movement is about more than just bouldering; it’s about the lifestyle and the ‘movement’ that comes with it. The vibe and overall atmosphere of the gym embodies their spirit of being a fun and inclusive space. Not to mention, they have excellent shower facilities and changing rooms so you can wash up comfortably before heading back out in the CBD area.

Entry to the Boulder Movement starts from $30 and $250 for 10 entry passes. However if you’re new to the bouldering scene, sign up for the Class passes as the Boulder Movement instructors will guide you through the basics and fundamentals of bouldering. You can also check out their rates here.

For someone who has never done bouldering before due to preconceptions that it was too tough and scary, I was proven completely wrong. After guidance from the instructors, I was able to progress a few levels over the course of the evening. If you’re looking for a quick workout after work, Boulder Movement is a great place to start your bouldering journey and get your sweat on!

I Attended A Self Defence Class – Now I Can Take Down Someone Twice My Size

Growing up in Singapore all my life, I can safely say that we take our safety for granted.

Our country’s low crime rates gives us a sense of security and enough confidence to walk down dark alleys in the middle of the night without fear.

But as we are often reminded, low crime doesn’t mean no crime. The fact is that even in a country with low crime rates like Singapore, one still reads about the periodic sexual assaults that happen here.

With that, I grabbed a couple of my female colleagues to attend a self defence class at Kapap Academy.

[caption id="attachment_37442" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]kapap academy Image Credit:

She has since tweaked the original version to better suit real-life situations. Called Modern Street Combatives, the academy’s self-defence system teaches people to be street smart as well as studying predatory psychology to detect and avoid dangers.

Her sessions are typically 2 hours long and is split into an hour of theory lesson and another hour of practical where students can perform the moves that were taught in the theory.

Upon arrival at her class, we sat in a circle around the mat and immediately dived right in to her theory lesson.

[caption id="attachment_37430" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Now before you yawn at the idea of an hour of theory lesson, Yunquan keeps it fun and engaging by having her students demonstrate some of the moves with her.

Standing at just 1.62m tall, we were all impressed by Yunquan’s abilities to pin down a male student with minimal effort.

[caption id="attachment_37433" align="aligncenter" width="4591"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

At Kapap Academy, they believe that instead of using physical strategies to defend oneself to survive an assault, victims of such aggression need to learn appropriate strategies and tactics to de-escalate, evade or control and restraint their assailant until help comes.

Using knowledge drawn from both psychology and body guarding training, participants will learn how to  identify signs of an imminent attack, and position oneself to create opportunities to escape.

Instead of relying on strength based techniques that are often taught in combative sports (E.g Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts etc), participants learn how to use principles of bio-mechanics and leverage to protect themselves.

[caption id="attachment_37439" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

This lesson was particularly useful for everyone as we learned tactics on how to protect ourselves when we’re faced with a case of molestation and getting out of these difficult situations.

Once theory was over, we paired up and started on the practical.

As we were attending a Level 1 class, we mostly covered basics such as breaking out from various forearm grabs and holds.

From learning how to get out of a hair pull to learning how to escape if you’re being cornered, Yunquan taught us practical moves to use to get yourself out of the situation.

[caption id="attachment_37431" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Even if you’re petite or not physically fit, the moves taught during this class really showed us that as long as you learn the pressure points and critical points of the human body, you’ll definitely be able to get yourself out of any dangerous situations.

[caption id="attachment_37441" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Other classes also covers combative skills that are used by soldiers or the para-military police to engage an opponent. This includes stand up engagement to ground, knife defence and use of improvised weapons like car keys, umbrellas, water bottles, handphones, bags, etc

After a whole hour of flipping and hurting my colleagues, we huddled in front of Yunquan’s laptop to watch videos of real life assaults and harassment. We sat and discussed ways to tackle the assault if we were ever faced with a similar situation.

[caption id="attachment_37437" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]kapap academy Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Holding classes for people of all ages and physical capabilities, Kapap Academy aims to provide ordinary people with the tools/skill sets to stay safe against worst case scenarios in the streets.

So whether you’re preparing yourself for an overseas posting, overseas studies or you plan on travelling to unsafe cities, it’s important to keep safe while enjoying your new experiences abroad.

Who knows, the next time the unexpected happens, you might just be able to protect yourself or your loved ones against the attackers.

Abseiling In The Heartlands

Abseiling off a block of HDB flats is a real thing in Singapore. Gone were those days where bungee jumping and bar top dancing weren’t allowed in Singapore as authorities, who for years have kept a tight rein on fun, show gradual signs of loosening up.

[caption id="attachment_36456" align="aligncenter" width="1296"]abseiling singapore Image Credit: West Coast CC Youth Club[/caption]

Not for the faint hearted, this newfangled activity is organised by the abseiling interest group at West Coast CC Youth Club.

They folks at West Coast CC Youth Club are bringing abseiling to the residents instead of you coming to them. The abseiling activities are held every second Sunday of the month. Best part, you get to abseil off a different HDB block every month.

If you’re thinking, “Siao ah?!”

This activity is completely safe and fun for all ages. If you’re deathly afraid of heights, rest assured that you’ll be in the safe hands of professionals.

Work Out At Singapore’s First 24-Hr Container Gym For Only $7/Hr

My 2018 New Year’s Resolution was to get fit and stay in shape.

I told myself,

“Alright, time to get a gym membership, get new workout clothes, a yoga mat and start fresh!”

This resolution of mine only stuck for a month because 1. gym memberships are CRAZY expensive and 2. all those hulk-like bodybuilders can be pretty intimidating.

Besides, all they do is grunt and hog the equipments 90% of the time.

Just recently, I was introduced to a 24 hour container gym that is automated and only charges you based on the hours you book your pod for. Talk about a dream come true.

Time To Get Fit Fam

The Gym Pod is Singapore’s first 24 hours automated container smart gym. It is designed such that you can enjoy an undisturbed and private workout at anytime of your choosing.

[caption id="attachment_36024" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Thanks to The Gym Pod, you can now have your very own private gym containers to exercise in. This is a complete dream come true for those who can’t deal with the crowd! No more competing for gym equipments with other gym goers and crazy gym memberships.

The Gym Pod doesn’t come with a buffet-spread worth of gym equipments but you can definitely get the basics such as a treadmill, dumbbells ranging from 1kg to 20kg, an adjustable bench as well as a guided weight-plate-loaded bar, also known as a Smith Machine.

[caption id="attachment_36025" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Their equipments may not be as fancy as compared to a typical gym, but they’re sufficient to provide you with enough challenging exercises to build your body in a safe way.

But the best part of this container gym is definitely the fact that they only charge you $7/hour. They don’t run on memberships so you no longer have to stress out about that gym membership you’re paying for every month.

First-timers get to enjoy a free hour of workout as well!

[caption id="attachment_36027" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

Users are not allowed to stay in the gym for hours in one session which means you get guaranteed access to space and gym equipments at your booked timings. You get your own private space to workout and not be affected by crowds as the gym container only fits a max of 3 people at each time.

Open all day, every day, feel free to gym away past midnight if that’s what you like. Don’t worry, the gym is fully automated and monitored 24/7 for your safety.

The process is entirely fuss-free. After your successful booking, a SMS with a 4 digit passcode of The Gym Pod’s door at the location of your choosing will be sent to you.

At the time of your booking, simply go to The Gym Pod, key in the 4 digit passcode, and you can enter and start your workout!

[caption id="attachment_36026" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]singapore gym Image Credit: The Gym Pod Facebook[/caption]

While there’s only 1 pod at located at the JTC Launchpad (next to Timbre+) for now, the lovely people being The Gym Pod are working with authorities now to place more Gym Pods at convenient locations.

Or, you can drop them an email of your suggested location and who knows, you might just see a Gym Pod near your place.

Gymming in Singapore just got a whole lot easier and a lot less intimidating. So, who’s up for a good workout session?

A Poke Theory Is S’pore’s First Halal Poke Place – Customise Your Bowls From $9.90

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed growing up as a Muslim in Singapore would be the lack of healthy Halal-certified food options.

Most salad bars and poke bowl restaurants in Singapore aren’t halal so imagine my happiness when A Poke Theory finally announced that they finally got their Halal-certification.

Of course I had to head down and try it out for myself and finally understand what the hype surrounding poke bowls are all about.

Life’s Too Short To Eat Bad Food

If you have no idea what poke bowls are, it’s a traditional Hawaiian “salad” filled with rice, covered with chunks of raw, marinated fish (usually tuna) and topped with lots of vegetables and umami-packed sauces.

What you get is an Instagram-worthy poke bowl that looks good and tastes amazing as well!

[caption id="attachment_35757" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

In Hawaii, it’s often found everywhere, from gas stations to roadside stands. Diners get to pick out the kind of poke they want and get it to go in a Styrofoam container.

Stepping into A Poke Theory instantly brought me back to the time I first had my poke bowl in LA. It’s modern, minimal and even the music selection was a 10 out of 10. Definitely a great place to gather your friends or family for a healthy meal.

[caption id="attachment_35754" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

A Poke Theory has been around since July 2016 and it only made sense for them to move towards feeding a community even larger than what they they were already catering for.

There were several major changes that the owner, Joey Lee, and his head chef had to make to the recipes in order to maintain the same taste and quality. They spent over 3 weeks making changes to the soy sauce which was a major part of the marinade as well as coming up with their own furikake which took over a month and half.

[caption id="attachment_35758" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Despite all the delays and challenges that they faced, they managed to re-engineer their prized marinades with Halal-certified ingredients to achieve the same taste as their original non-Halal marinades.

I spoke to one of the founders of A Poke Theory, Joey Lee, who is the mastermind behind all the recipe creations.

“Normally if you already have a winning formula, you wouldn’t want to change it. However, if we can make the Halal ingredients taste the same or even improve the recipe, it pushes us out of our comfort zone.”

In fact, they taste almost similar that regular customers could barely see the change in the recipes as adaptations to include Halal ingredients have already been incorporated to gradually over the last 4 months so as to keep quality control at its peak.

[caption id="attachment_35763" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Ordering a Poke bowl here is simple. All you have to do is pick a size ($9.90, $12.90, $15.90), your choice of base, poke (up to 2 options), free toppings and additional premium toppings that are freshly made daily.

If it’s your first time ordering a poke bowl, we highly recommend you getting the Lemon Herb Quinoa which pairs really well with the poke. It’s definitely a lighter option as compared to the signature sushi rice.

[caption id="attachment_35766" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Be adventurous and get both the tuna and salmon! Their two best-selling poke would be the Spicy Garlic Sesame Tuna and Avocado Miso Salmon. The Avocado Miso sauce is a hit at A Poke Theory as the sauce is thick and creamy from the combination of olive oil, fresh spinach leaves and greek yoghurt. No mayo is included which makes it completely healthy and guilt-free!

They’ll be releasing new seasonal special flavours as well. Diners can look forward to their Romesco Salmon soon which is a bold step away from their typical Asian flavours.

[caption id="attachment_35768" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

With the smallest bowl priced at $9.90, it’s definitely an affordable and healthy lunch option especially if you’re working around the CBD areas.

If you’re looking for a healthy sweet treat, A Poke Theory makes gorgeous looking Superfood smoothie bowls which makes for a great post-gym fuel or after-work tête-à-têtes.

[caption id="attachment_35769" align="aligncenter" width="1078"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: @apoketheory[/caption]

Swap your morning coffee for their cold pressed juices which ais packed with lotsa wholesome goodness, all bottled and ready to go for you. Their juice recipes are improvised from whatever leftover ingredients which is in line with A Poke Theory’s aim to minimise food wastage and making the most out of anything salvageable.

[caption id="attachment_35761" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]A Poke Theory Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

For those can’t get enough of their premium toppings especially their highly raved ‘Spiced Roasted Cashews’, you can get them in to-go snack packs for $6 each.
