This Authentic Mexican Joint In Tanjong Pagar Serves Tacos From $8 – And It’s Vegetarian-Friendly Too

One of the most enjoyable foods to eat, has got to be the taco.

It’s so simple yet so good, which probably explains why it’s considered to be one of the best foods to eat when drunk.

Is this why they serve alcohol with tacos?

In Singapore, there’s an increasing number of Mexican restaurants and a crowd favourite is Lucha Loco.

Going Loco For Tacos

Located on 15 Duxton Hill, Lucha Loco is a casual Mexican cocina (kitchen) and bar, serving up great Mexican food and tequilas (of course).

It first opened in 2012 and today, it is known as one of the few places in Singapore for great Mexican fare.

The coolest part of this restaurant has got to be the outdoor garden seating.

Beautifully decorated, yet still spacious enough to accomodate large groups, it’s almost as if you’re dining with fairies.

Now, for the food.

They serve up tacos and quesadillas, as well as a wide variety of other authentic Mexican snacks and sides.

Some of the favourites are the Baja Fish Tacos ($10), the vegetarian Corn & Artichoke Tacos ($8), and the Cangrejo Tacos ($16), which uses buttermilk fried soft-shell crab.

Lucha Loco has seasonal flavours for their tacos too, so do check their Facebook page for any updates on exclusive taco creations.

Their most recent creations were for the Trump-Kim summit.

If you’re looking for something easier to munch on, try their Crab Tostadas ($17), which uses blue swimmer crab meat, salted egg sauce, and crispy chicken skin. Mmm….

The good thing about Lucha Loco is that they’re also vegetarian-friendly, with many vegetarian options available on the menu.

For dessert, if you’re not getting the Churros ($14), were you really at Lucha Loco?

For drinks, Happy Hour takes place from 5pm to 7pm on weekdays, with discounts on their frozen lime, piña margarita, kirin draught, corona, cava, house wines, gin, rum, and house vodka.

Stuff Your Face With Cake At This Bake Sale Pop-Up – Happens Every Weekend Till August

I love cake. It’s one of the most comforting desserts we’ve ever invented.

Growing up, cake was always something that was only available or bought for birthdays and special occasions. I always envied westerners and their bake sales, where pastries and bakes were made and sold within a community.

Bake sales weren’t a thing in Singapore back then, and till today, it’s still uncommon. But now, my dreams of going to a bake sale is about to come true.

Enter Cake Club.

Every weekend for the month of July and August (14 July – 26 August 2018), Marina Square Glasshouse will play host to the Cake Club.

Cake Club is a pop-up retail market featuring some of Singapore’s best bakeries and cake shops, and they’re not kidding when they say they brought the best.

In July, Cake Club visitors will be able to find and purchase pastries and cakes from Bloomsbury Bakers, Inthebrickyard, My Sister Bakes, Milk Moons, and more!

August will see the roster shuffle to feature our favourite Edith Patisserie, Boufe Boutique Cafe, Creme Maison Bakery and many more!

That’s not all, you might even find some guest bakeries such as Non Entrée Desserts, who are known for presenting their desserts as savoury dishes, and Konditori, appearing at the Cake Club!

Also, we heard that there’ll be a surprise appearance by a special dessert chef. No clues given at the moment. Hmmm…

For those of you who need something to wash down all that cake, The 1872 Clipper Tea Co. will be serving their freshly brewed signature teas at the Cake Club.

Of course, Cake Club isn’t just a retail market. There will also be workshops for budding bakers to learn a thing or 2 from the pros.

Yume Patisserie will be conducting Buttercream Flower Cream Piping workshop on 11 and 12 August 2018 while Once Upon A Table will have Cookie Painting workshops on 25 and 26 August.

Lining Siloso Beach is the Sentosa GrillFest.

That’s right, Sentosa GrillFest returns once again for its second edition, transforming 1km of Siloso Beach every Friday to Sunday from 13 to 29 July 2018, into a food street.

This year’s edition of Sentosa GrillFest features over 100 local and international food and drink options from 21 F&B establishments!

Expect local favourites such as Salted Egg Yolk Chicken and unique creations such as Laksa Mentai Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl. There will also be local favourites such as Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow, and Satay.

From 8 to 12 August, join Sentosa as it celebrates National Day with the very first Sentosa “Kaki” BBQ.

Held at Palawan Beach, this beach barbecue will feature outdoor movie screenings next to communal barbecue pits at Palawan Green.

You won’t have to bring your own food, because ingredients that have already been marinated and seasoned for cooking, will be provided. Everything is provided actually. From the BBQ pit to the ingredients and the cutlery. All you have to do is bring friends and family and barbecue.

If you require professional assistance, chefs will also be available to assist you.

The Singapore Zoo Lights Up At Night This July With A New Luminous Rainforest Trail

Have you been to the Singapore Zoo at night?

I’m not talking about the Night Safari. I mean, the Singapore Zoo. Usually, you won’t. Or rather, you can’t because the Zoo closes at 6pm daily.

From 1 July 2018, you can!

The Singapore Zoo has come up with a new attraction in celebration of its 45th birthday!

Introducing Rainforest Lumina.

A Rainforest Light Show In The Dark

Held in collaboration with Moment Factory, Rainforest Lumina is apparently the first multi-sensory night walk experience in Asia, with more than 10 interactive zones along the 1km light trail that takes you through the Singapore Zoo.

However, don’t expect to see any live animals (they’re off-duty). The only animals you’ll see are on the various light installations or projections.

With zones that look like they’re lifted straight out of James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar, this is guaranteed to be a luminescent spectacle.

Stroll on the Luminous Pathway, step through the Shimmering Islands, and marvel at the glowing Lantern Passage.

Mark your calendars because there’s going to be another LUNAR ECLIPSE happening!

And not just any typical lunar eclipse. Set to last 1 hour and 43 minutes, this will be the longest lunar eclipse of the century and will be visible from Asia, Australia, Africa and Europe.

Which also means, we’ll be able to see it from Singapore!

Once In A Blood Moon

If you’re planning to witness this lunar event, be prepared to stay up late.

The eclipse will begin at 1.14am on 28 July 2018, with the total eclipse set to happen from 3.30am to 5.13am.

The last lunar eclipse we had was back in 31 January 2018, which saw a lunar eclipse, blue moon, and Supermoon happen all at the same time.

The next lunar eclipse we’ll be seeing after the one in July, will be on 21 January 2019.

So clear your schedules and get your phones, cameras and telescopes out for this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event.

Introducing NDP Jalan!, a new location-based, augmented reality (AR) mobile game!

This app is the first interactive mobile game that’s launched in conjunction with NDP.

While the name of the game is a little tacky (come on, Pokemon GO and this is NDP Jalan! Tell me you see the similarity here), I decided to download the app to try for myself.

To start off, the default avatar is actually quite well-designed. It’s cute.

You’ll get to choose your gender (of course), skin tone, 12 different colours for your clothing, and even the DESIGN on your backpack.

The designs for the backpack were all designed by students from 18 Special Education schools specially for National Day 2018!

After customising and creating your Avatar, you’ll be directed to screen which is basically a tutorial for the game.

The app will lead players on specially curated trails, with various hidden checkpoints and quests to complete at each checkpoint.

As you pass each checkpoint, the app will reveal the location of the next one.

Here’s the zinger: if you’re a Singaporean citizen or Permanent Resident and manage to complete EVERY quest in each trail, you will stand a chance to win tickets to the National Day Parade 2018!

There are 3 trails available – Arts and Culture, Nature, and NDP.

Every 5 quests completed will allow players to redeem discount vouchers for selected food and beverage and retail outlets.

9 Fun And Educational Places To Bring Your Kids To That Are Wallet-Friendly

Being a parent is tough. Teaching a child is tough. Looking after a child is tough.

But what if it doesn’t have to be? Don’t worry I’m not trying to sell you anything (fight me, insurance agents).

I’ve compiled a list of places to take your kids that’s both educational and inexpensive. Because honestly, we’re quite done with the zoo, and the rooftop play area at VivoCity.

Farms

Mainland Tropical Fish Farm

Personally, I love fishes and marine life in general. So I spent a good amount of time visiting fish farms as a child. If you live in the East, then you might want to pay a visit to Mainland Tropical Fish Farm instead.

While the place primarily sells aquarium fishes and supplies, there are activities available for the kids too. Spend a dollar or 3, on packets of food pellets and feed the fishes in the outdoor pond.

For $4, equip your child with a fishing net and a bucket for them to try their hand at catching their very own “longkang” fish! Just make sure they don’t fall in.

The Animal Resort is home to stallions, a variety of birds that includes a Cassowary and Marabou Stork, a German Shepherd dog training ground, rabbits and guinea pigs, fishes, a pet grooming centre, and a pet shop.

Kranji Marshes

For those unfamiliar with Kranji Marshes, the 56.8-hectare freshwater marshland is home to unique biodiversity.

Kranji Marshes is actually split into two main areas – the public area that is open to all members of the public, and the restricted core conservation area that is deemed to be ecologically sensitive. You can enter the core conservation area if you sign up for a guided tour.

According to NParks, Kranji Marshes is home to more than 170 species of birds, 54 species of butterflies, and 33 species of dragonflies! Alongside Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, it plays an important role in providing a habitat for the conservation of wildlife in the Kranji area.

Moorhen Blind and Swamphen Hide are 2 bird-watching stations that overlook marsh landscapes, perfect for taking in the sights of nature.

The park is open from 7am-7pm daily. Do note that there is no lighting in the evenings! The park is also wheelchair- and pram-friendly, with the exception of the Raptor Tower.

I remember the days when ORTO used to be Bottle Tree Park.

Today, the 555,000 square feet space has been completely revamped and taken over by ORTO. Located in the North, it is Singapore’s first multi-recreational park that is open 24 hours a day.

Today, it houses a prawning and fishing facility, a paintball park, a trampoline park, a drift karting circuit, and even a sporting facility for rent!

Besides having an Instagram handle, anybody who owns the latest iPhone, a film camera and VSCO is loosely deemed a “photographer” now. All you have to do is aim, shoot, edit and post right?

Easy? Not quite.

What sets a legit photographer apart from the amateur ones is a creative eye that only few posses. Not everyone can find a creative spin to a photo that has been shot multiple times by other photographers.

Don’t get us started on amateur photographers ripping photos from other sites, editing them and claiming it as their own.

We sussed out some of the most talented photographers in Singapore that you should keep a look out for. See Singapore in a new light through the lenses of these talented photographers who are making a name for themselves on social media.

1. Jayden Tan (@jaydenation)

Jayden Tan’s striking photographs will get heads turning for all the good reasons. His work first went viral in 2016 when he posted a series of 4 tongue-in-cheek portraits to celebrate National Day!

The photographer’s “Char Bor” series was created to commemorate Singapore’s 51st Birthday. The series feature the same model reimagined as the various women of Singapore. I mean cmon, who would’ve thought to use chilli packets as earrings?

He’s back again this year with a “Make Yishun Great Again” themed photoshoot. I mean just look at the amount of effort that goes into his work.

2. Tim Tan (@perspecgifs)

If you’ve seen Mura Masa – What If I Go MV, then you’ll be familiar with the Wiggle 3D Effect.

The image of the subject is taken in a stereoscopic manner to give it a sense of depth. This effect is so popular that Tim has dedicated his entire Instagram to this Wiggle 3D Effect.

If you’re familiar with film cameras, then you’ll realise his images gives off a very old school Fujifilm vibe.

You’ll notice some familiar faces on his feed such as the gorgeous Malaysian singer, Yuna and Korean R&B prince, Dean.

3. Yais Yusman & Yafiq Yusman (@_yaisyusman_ & @_yafiqyusman_)

The Yusman’s are definitely the coolest duo in Singapore. Yes, they’re actual twins.

When the #hypebeast #exploresg trend first kicked off on Instagram, these brothers were out and about exploring the entire Singapore for the sickest shots.

Their Instagram feed is carefully curated with creative architecture shots and clever light play. A prominent feature in all of their photos would be their quirky subjects “hanging off” railings and “playing dead”.

This is how Mondays feel like.

Most of their shots are taken with an iPhone edited using apps such as VSCO. It’s hard to believe that some of the shots were taken in Singapore.

4. Khairul Azmas (@khairulazmas)

Khairul’s Hypebeast-esque aesthetic has garnered him a strong following in the photography scene.

He is a self-taught photographer who delved into photography in late 2014 when he bought his first DSLR & iPhone. His Instagram account was also created around the same time was where he shared most of his work.

In 2015, after working for 5 years as a marketing professional, he left the corporate world to pursue a full-time fashion diploma & focused on his photography which brought about attention from brands & secured him jobs.

His photography skills are next level and it comes as no surprise that he is one of Sony’s go-to photographers in Singapore.

Although not as known as other local photographers, A’s work is definitely a beauty.

His photography projects are often the result of my encounters with the cycle of redevelopment in Singapore. He is also inspired by the work of photographers such as Aik Beng Chia, Robert Zhao Renhui, Daido Moriyama, Martin Parr and Sim Chi Yin.

Did you know he published a photobook called “Ways Of Seeing” which you can get from Books Actually?

With nearly 10, 000 public housing blocks spread throughout Singapore, “Ways of Seeing” is a collection of images that attempts to capture the aesthetic of look-out points and sight lines in and around such estates in Singapore.

From colour coded void decks whose pillars seemingly repeat infinitely to the peonies, diamonds, moon gates and circles found in stairwells and lift lobbies, the architectural motifs found in public housing blocks in Singapore became our Ways of Seeing.

6. Fandy Razak (@frazak)

Fandy is mostly known for his wedding photography works and also for being the coolest skate dad to his two kids.

On weekdays, he can be seen sending his two sons to and fro from school. On weekends, he’s busy photographing someone’s wedding.

He’s known for coming up with the most creative wedding concepts for his clients.

Asides wedding photography, Fandy also captures images of his family on their travels.

Yik Keat’s images pretty much sums up this photographer’s mad skills when it comes to producing breathtaking visuals.

His saturated shots have garnered him a strong following base, so much so that Singapore’s Biggest Music Festival, ULTRA Singapore roped him in to be the event’s official photographer.

8. Lenne Chai (@lenneigh)

Fashion photographer Lenne Chai captures stunning portraits and amazing fashion images.

What sets her apart from other fashion photographers would definitely be her style that is a mixture of romantic and quirky.

She also had her very own exhibition at this year’s Oh! Emerald Hill called “Salvation Made Simple”. This installation explores the ways in which spirituality has become commercialised to match our commercial world + erasure of native culture as a result of colonialism.

If you love anything from portraits, streetwear and film vibes, then you have to check out Estelle’s work.

One of her photos even received a even received a congratulatory thumbs up emoji from musician ASAP Rocky on Instagram .
