Sunrise Bistro & Bar – A 5 Star Menu Which Won’t Burn A Hole In Your Pocket

Earlier this week, we visited Sunrise Bistro & Bar at Big Splash at East Coast to taste the revamped a la carte menu and their upcoming Festive Communal Set. We were really excited to experience how the chef marries casual French cuisine with contemporary influences using his signature sous vide technique.

Ambience

Tucked away in a nostalgic location, the casual dining setting offers comfort at the end of our busy day. The spacious and cosy al fresco dining area spoils you with the gentle sea breeze, inviting you to kick back, relax and put your mind totally at ease. Here’s how the bar looks like indoor:

In addition to the extensive wine and beer list, Sunrise Bistro & Bar also offers a good mix of small bites and sweet treats. The friendly bartenders are also more than happy to whip up any customized drink at your request, something we find more bars are starting to offer in Singapore.

Festive Communal Dining Set ($99++) – Serves 2 to 3 persons

Just in time for the festive season, the chef doled out a Festive Meal featuring Chilled Assorted Seafood Platter, Meat Platter and Salted Egg Yolk & White Chocolate Fondue. This is available from 19th December  to 1st January 2016.

Here are some of the food we tried:

Chilled Assorted Seafood Platter

These freshly shucked Australian Coffin Bay Oysters are juicy, plump and succulent. It is apparent that premium oysters are carefully chosen to satisfy diners’ taste buds.

The chef definitely pays a lot of attention to the condiments in order to heighten the indulgence of seafood. The unique condiments – Japanese Migonette with Japanese Brown Rice Vinegar paired nicely with the oysters, while the Thai Style Roasted Tomato Dip brought out the sweet tenderness of the White Wine Blanched Live Prawns.

Meat Platter

Fret not if the cold platter doesn’t suit your fancy, there’s also the meat platter which you can choose from. The meat platter champions a Whole Red Snapper with Cereal Crust, BBQ Black Angus Beef Ribs and Crispy Pork Belly with Five Spice Salt. The red snapper was coated with Asian-style crunchy cereal crust, resulting in a delightful contrast to the soft and velvety smoothness of the red snapper. Similarly, the chef had specially prepared homemade sauces just for the platter – Apple and Smoked Ketchup, Sweet Chilli and Pineapple Sale and Honey Mustard Sauce. Our choice of poison? The Honey Mustard Sauce!

One of the highlights of the platter is the Pumpkin and Potato Mash. This unique combination added a touch of sweetness to the well-loved mashed potato, making it one of a kind. The smooth textured mash is a soft yet welcoming touch to the meaty platter.

Salted Egg Yolk & White Chocolate Fondue

Fondue doesn’t only exist for those with a sweet tooth. For the salted egg lover, this is undeniably your next favourite dish. Plunge the fruits and cookies into the warm white chocolate and salted egg custard dip and serve it right into your mouth. The feeling you get? Pure bliss.

The chef explained that in usual salted egg dishes, a greasy layer of oil forms after a while. In order to eliminate that problem, white chocolate is added to thicken the salted egg yolk custard hence resulting in a good consistency to the fondue.

Asian Five Spice Duck Leg Confit ($28++)

You can’t possibly miss this dish at a French restaurant – the classic duck leg confit. The duck leg is crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside. This is the result of the eight hours of hard work using the sous vide technique.

Cointreau Fizz ($28++)

A refreshing orange twist with Cointreau served in a flask, good for four persons.

Chef/Owner

The founder and the person behind every dish – Chef Vincent. With his 22 years of cooking experience, having served a slate of MediaCorp artistes and politicians, he will definitely delight you with his passion and creativity. His marriage of Asian-influenced flavours and casual French fare is wonderful, yet best of all, won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

All in all, we left the bistro and bar feeling satisfied, and would definitely recommend the menu to our friends with a strong 8 out of 10. The dish to try? All of them!

If you’re wondering what is “Penny University” all about, here’s a quick fact-sharing: During the 18th century, London was known for its burgeoning coffee culture when more and more people gathered at coffeehouses. Gradually, their casual conversations led to reasoned discussions. With coffee priced at a mere penny back then, their coffee culture eventually became associated with the term “Penny University”.

Today, paying homage to London’s coffee culture, the East Coast coffee joint, Penny University café is a favourite amongst café-goers in Singapore. While it clearly isn’t a legit education university, Penny University is serious about its business – especially its coffee brews. Their artisan coffees are known to be nicely proportioned and textured, which keep caffeine lovers coming back for more despite its no-frills menu.

Besides their selection of velvety cakes and food items infused with distinctive twists such as Moroccan spices, Penny University offers a snug afternoon in the dimly-lit setting replete with modern vintage interior designs.

10 Awesome Free Things To Do In Singapore This Christmas Season!

It’s the time of the year again when we celebrate the jolly festive season of Christmas! If you’re thinking of saving money while celebrating the occasion, here’s our list of 10 awesome free things to do in Singapore this Christmas!

[caption id="attachment_39" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: Tanglin Mall[/caption]

If you don’t already know, the snow shower outside Tanglin Mall has been a yearly festive tradition to embrace Christmas together. In a tropical country that does not snow at all, this is an absolute favourite for Singaporeans especially the kids!

What better way is there to celebrate Christmas than to soak up in the snow with your family and friends? From 14 November 2015 to 03 January 2016, enjoy the free snow shower at the following timings outside Tanglin Mall.

Address: 163 Tanglin Road

Weekdays:
Avalanche: 7:30pm to 7:45pm
Snow: 7:45pm to 8:00pm

Snow:  7:45pm to 8.00pm and 8:45pm to 9.00pm

While the snow is artificial, do note that for their avalanche it comes in foam so you might want to bring a fresh set of outfit to change into after basking in the fun!

Additionally, over at City Square Mall, there is also an hour of snowy playtime from 8pm to 9pm daily from 20 November 2015 to 3 January 2016, at City Green Outdoor Park.

2) Immerse yourself in our local creative culture

During this season of gifting, have you wondered about the stories behind retail merchandises? Another way to celebrate this Christmas is to bask in the vibrancy of Singapore’s retail scene.

If you’re into fashion, product and industrial design, don’t forget to check out the Keepers Playtime showcase at National Design Centre, which features a diverse range of retail craftsmanship with inspirational stories by 30 designer artisans. This holiday, besides the creative installations, you can expect workshops and talks as well from 26 November 2015 to 10 January 2016 and learn more about contemporary retail art designs.

As the paradox of generosity goes, the more you give, the more you receive. In this season of giving, you can spread the joy and love of Christmas by simply volunteering two hours of your time as a bell-ringer.

The Salvation Army presents Christmas Kettling, a fundraising event from 21 November to 24 December 2015. Spot the kettle pots at various locations namely Anchor Point, Far East Plaza, ION Orchard, Junction 8, Lucky Plaza, Raffles City, Tampines Mall, Tangs Orchard and Toa Payoh HDB Hub. Besides donating, if you’re a shopaholic but you wish to save some money this month, the Singapore Really Really Free Market is an absolute must-go! There will be a good range of both pre-loved and new items like books and apparels besides many other knick-knacks that you may not find anywhere else. This month, the market will be held at Hong Lim Park on 20 December starting from 1pm.

6) Sparkle in the magic world

Pamper your sight with a kaleidoscopic display of dazzling décor as you stroll along Orchard Road this December. The eye-catching array of glistening ornaments this year is conceptualized by Singapore singer-composer Dick Lee and designer Yang De Rong in hopes to present a magical world just for you. Orchard Road will also be hosting festive performances such as Christmas Caroling from 18 Dec to 23 Dec. More details as follows:

7) Talk a walk in nature

If you don’t quite fancy the Christmas décor glitz, away from the hustle and bustle of town, nature lovers especially will be delighted to discover the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore – the Southern Ridges – that offers a panoramic view of our city. The 10-km long trail along Henderson Road is connected by greenly hilltops and scenic parks and gardens. When the sun sets, the Southern Ridges will awe you with a breath-taking landscape of Singapore.

8) Join a concert

(i)

As Christmas approaches, there are church ministries that are more than willing to welcome the public to join them on their thrill of hope and rejoice as they celebrate the season together. At Christ Methodist Church, the two-night concert is said to include award-winning singer-songwriter Aubrey Suwito, former Malaysian Idol vocal coach Juwita Suwito, local R&B talent Sarah Cheng De Winne, and their talented band from Malaysia. On 16 and 17 December at 8pm, join their Christmas concert and meet new people, and cheer the night away!

(ii)

Not free on those dates? Fear not, coming to you on the 19th December is the final instalment of SG50 Concert Series in the Park at Gardens by the Bay. From 6pm onwards, you can expect to meet local artistes like The Sam Willows, Tosh and Weiliang, Tay Kewei and more at the open fields of the Meadow.

(iii)

Or if you’ll be around Esplanade on 20 December, party with Mus’Art Youth Wind Orchestra with hit tracks by Maroon 5, Donna Summer and more – all with a symphonic twist! Admission is free and on a first-come-first-serve basis. Time? 3pm at the concert hall.

8) A Friday Night with the Sky

(image source: Image Credit: Time Out Singapore[/caption]

If you’re hoping to watch the fireworks before New Year, you’ll have to visit the Singapore River this December! Besides the carnival decors, markets and carollers amongst other Christmas festive activities, there will be fireworks display on 12 and 26 Dec at 9pm. The Christmas celebrations will be held along Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay. Another bonus visual delight is some 8-metre tall LED trees by the river that are up only this Christmas season.

10) Gardens By The Bay

5 More Reasons Why You Should Definitely Visit The Singapore’s National Gallery!

1. Bombard yourself with artworks

First of all, you should tell yourself that the visit itself will be worthwhile, because the Gallery features over 8,000 works from the 19th and 20th centuries. On top of that too, the architecture of the National Gallery would be a sight to behold too: it represents an old-meets-modern architecture, as it was constructed by combining the former City Hall and the former Supreme Court, two of Singapore’s most significant National Monuments.

Here’s a view of the interior as well as some of the exhibited art pieces:

The interior of the Singapore’s National Gallery is properly designed with ample space and lighting so you do not have to worry about choosing the right filter for your photos.

3. Kid friendly interactive spaces

What most might not know about the National Gallery is that it also houses the Keppel Centre for Art Education, a first dedicated art education facility of its kind in South East Asia. These interactive spaces at the National Gallery were designed by artists to introduce art to young audiences in fun and meaningful ways, making the place suitable for the entire family. So other than hanging out with your friends, you can also embrace your inner child at the National Gallery!

5. It’s free! But for limited time only!

Finally, the National Gallery is open for free admission to anyone, but only until the 6th of December 2015! After the 6th, while admission to the buildings is free, admission to all exhibition galleries requires a ticket.
