Hari Raya 2018 Catering

As most festive gatherings go, preparing a Hari Raya open house will often involve some shedding of blood, sweat and tears.

If you’re a millennial like me who can’t cook traditional dishes to save her life, catering is your best friend. So take some time off and let these guys do all the work—you deserve it.

Here’s a compilation of Hari Raya catering to impress your pakcik, makcik, nenek, atuk, mother in law and basically the entire kampung.

1. Nasi Ambeng Asli Jurong West

If you need to impress your Asian mom that you’re now independent and can cook on your own, Nasi Ambeng Asli Jurong West is right up your alley.

Serving up traditional Hari Raya dishes must-haves such as Lontong, rendang, sambal goreng and more. For just $12 per pax, you don’t have to break a sweat in the kitchen and deal with all the cleaning up afterwards.

They’ll also throw in a complementary dessert of your choice and beverages.

Their Nasi Ambeng set ($12/pax) is also highly raved about! If you prefer this style of eating as compared to buffet-style, then you can’t miss out on their Nasi Ambeng.

2. Deanna’s Kitchen

Let’s be real, we kinda get sick of lontong and rendang after a couple of days. So what better way to change things up a by serving your guests the famous prawn noodles from Deanna’s Kitchen.

The Deanna’s Prawns x Clams Mee ($8.50 per pax) comes with 3 different type of noodles, 3 big prawns per pax, 10 – 15 clams per pax, kang kong, bean sprouts and sliced fish cake.

The prawn noodles will be served buffet style. All you need to do is prepare a pot for them to pour the soup into so you can reheat easily. Alternatively, they can lend you the soup warmer and they will return to collect it after your event. How convenient!

This is covered in the delivery charge of $45. However, if you do not need the warmer and then delivery is only one way, it will cost only $20.

Meet S’pore’s Spice Boy And His Muji-Style Spice Shop In AMK

Meet Jack.

He’s a 28 year old Spice Maker in Singapore.

[caption id="attachment_34992" align="aligncenter" width="4240"]Anthony the spicemaker Image Credit: Melissa Chan / Vulcan Post[/caption]

Anthony the Spice Maker is a hipster looking spice shop tucked away in Ang Mo Kio’s wet market. At first glance, anyone would think it’s a fancy stall selling tea leaves or coffee beans. Take a closer look and you’ll realise that it’s a shop selling spices.

Let’s be real, most of us would look at him and think, “Sure not this Chinese boy can sell Indian spices?”

[caption id="attachment_35016" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Anthony The Spice Maker Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Well, you’ll be surprised. He’s a Chinese boy with an Indian soul. He knows his spices inside out. He added, “For a Chinese guy, I can handle spice pretty well.”

If you were to ask any millennials whether they cook, 70% would probably say no. Eating out everyday seems like an easier option. If you ask me to replicate my mom’s home cooked dishes, I’ll probably give up and order McDonald’s instead.

Heck, I bet half us don’t even know the names of the different spices to begin with.

So that’s where Anthony The Spice Maker comes in. He makes cooking easier for all you millennials out there who are learning how to cook.

The Spice Mecca

The store was first started by Jack’s grandfather in 1986. After completing his National Service obligations, Jack was finally hit with the realisation that he needed a job. That’s when his father, Anthony, told him to join the business. Since then, Jack has been running the Ang Mo Kio outlet while his father runs the one in Chinatown.

[caption id="attachment_35015" align="aligncenter" width="3974"]Anthony The Spice Maker Image Credit: Melissa Chan / Vulcan Post[/caption]

Naturally, a first time cook will feel intimidated stepping into this shop.

“So many spices? Where do I start?”

Jack will come to your rescue. If you’re a newcomer, he’ll take his time to explain the differences between the ready-made rempahs that are available in the fridge and the dry spice blends that are packaged nicely in those brown paper bags.

The spices that he sells are perfect for busy young couples or home cooks. If you’re working a 9 – 5 job, you know that all you want at the end of the day is a quick simple meal. He explains that if you’re someone with a busy lifestyle, he’ll recommend the ready made rempah which is crafted for time-starved customers.

[caption id="attachment_35017" align="aligncenter" width="3999"]Anthony The Spice Maker Image Credit: Melissa Chan / Vulcan Post[/caption]

He prides in the fact that he uses high grade spices to make his rempahs. No preservatives, M.S.G. and artificial additives are used in the making of his rempahs. So if you’re health conscious, this is the healthier option as compared to buying those instant rempah you can get at most supermarkets.

If you’re a slightly advanced home cook and you trust that people won’t get food poisoning from your cooking, he will recommend getting the dry spice blends which you can use to adjust to your preferences. We heard that their best selling Curry Powder Singapura has quite a bit of a kick to it!

[caption id="attachment_35018" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Anthony The Spice Maker Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Best part, his spices are basically dummy-proof. Each packaging comes with a label that lists the ingredients and an instruction that explains what it is used for.

[caption id="attachment_35019" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Anthony The Spice Maker Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

While the spice blends and rempah are available online, I highly recommend going down to the outlet instead. You’ll be able to interact with him and get a better understanding of what you’re buying.

However if you are pressed for time, you can check out the available spices online. In fact, if you know anyone who’s missing home cooked flavours, they ship their spices as well.

Zombies Are Taking Over Our Army Camps In S’pore’s First Zombie Film

zombiepura singapore

What happens when you combine Ah Boys To Men and the zombies from The Walking Dead?

You get Zombiepura.

If you don’t already know, Singapore is about to have our very own zombie movie!

Something Evil’s Lurking

[caption id="attachment_34981" align="aligncenter" width="1196"]Zombiepura Singapore Image Credit: Zombiepura Facebook[/caption]

Zombiepura finally released their movie poster and we’re all feeling very excited and maybe slightly confused.

Honestly, the guy in the poster seems like he wants revenge for all the tekans under the hot sun and route march during his life in NS.

The poster has since garnered quite a bit of attention on their Facebook page and it seems like most Singaporeans are excited for this ABTM X The Walking Dead collaboration.

Singapore film director Jacen Tan produced a script for Zombiepura 8 years ago while he was on guard duty during National Service. The best ideas comes when you’re damn sian doing guard duty. Good on you, Jacen Tan.

[caption id="attachment_34985" align="aligncenter" width="768"]Zombiepura Singapore Image Credit: Zombiepura Facebook[/caption]

The $1mil comedy movie is slated for release in the second half of the year. The movie revolves around a zombie outbreak in an army camp where a lazy reservist soldier (Alaric Tay) and a gungho sergeant (Benjamin Heng) are forced to work together to survive.

If you’re expecting George Romero’s “Night Of The Living Dead” kind of movie, well, you’ll be getting a “Zombieland” movie instead.

[caption id="attachment_34987" align="aligncenter" width="1500"]Zombiepura Singapore Image Credit: Zombiepura Facebook[/caption]

So, if you love horror and comedy, this movie is right up your alley.

The movie has been in the making for 7 years! It took months of preparation, over 100 crew members and extras, gallons of blood, sweat and tears and a whole month of shoot. Talk about dedication.

We’ve got real high hopes and expectations for Zombiepura once it hits theatres. But please, for the love of God, let’s pray they avoid tacky CG effects and product placements.

/coughs/ Jack Neo /coughs/

[caption id="attachment_34984" align="aligncenter" width="1754"]Zombiepura Singapore Image Credit: Zombiepura Facebook[/caption]

The poster and concept art both look promising! One thing’s for sure, we can’t wait to see how the zombies turn out.

But the real question is: What do we do during a zombie outbreak? Can we survive? Will SAF deploy their men to protect us?

I guess we’ll never know.

Pro-tip: Whatever happens, play dead.

This New Halal Fried Chicken Joint Serves 3 Levels Of Heat, Cooked With The World’s Spiciest Peppers

Taufik Batisah has grown to become a household name for most Singaporeans. Asides from being the winner of the first season of Singapore Idol, he was every girl’s crush growing up (well, for me at least).

There have been plenty of rumours surrounding the opening of this eatery and the wait is finally over. You can now enjoy Nashville style fried chicken from Chix Hot Chicken.

Can Sing, Can Dance, Can Sell Chicken

Inspired by South America’s love for fried chicken, Chix Hot Chicken specialises in Nashville Style Hot Chicken served with the world’s spiciest peppers. The chicken is served atop a slice of white bread and pickle chips.

[caption id="attachment_34946" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: Chix Hot Chicken Facebook[/caption]

The options come in Quarter ($9.90) with a choice of thigh and leg or breast and wing; Half ($18.90) or 3 Whole Wings ($10.90).

You can also choose your spice level – Mild Hotness, Extra Hotness or Insane Hotness.

[caption id="attachment_34947" align="aligncenter" width="1178"] Image Credit: Chix Hot Chicken Facebook[/caption]

Now here’s the fun part. If you think you can handle your spice well, try out the “Extra Hotness” level first. The chicken skin is typically rubbed with ground cayenne peppers, however, in this case – ghost peppers.

The Ghost Pepper exploded in popularity on YouTube and other social sites where pepperheads eat whole Ghost Peppers as part of a challenge. The ghost pepper is rated at more than 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs), enough to make a grown man cry.

[caption id="attachment_34950" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: Chix Hot Chicken Facebook[/caption]

If you’re someone who knows no fear and thinks, “Aiya, ghost pepper no kick. Give me something crazier.”

Then you’ll love the “Insane Hotness”. The chicken skin is seasoned with Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper, which typically rates at 2 million SHUs.

If you plan on trying this out, then we highly recommend taking an MC from work because God knows what’s that going to do to your intestines. If you’re feeling bored with life and you need something to spice things up, then we dare you to take up the Insane Hotness challenge.

Tell us how it goes for you!

If you’re more of a “no thanks, I’m good without spice” kind of person, you can get the The Original ($9.90, $10.90, $18.90) – buttermilk fried chicken made from a mixture of spices inspired from New Orleans. Your stomach will definitely thank you for this.

[caption id="attachment_34949" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: Chix Hot Chicken Facebook[/caption]

You can also enjoy their chicken in a burger form. Their Soul Sliders ($12) comes with a juicy boneless chicken served with slaw, pickles and pink mayo sandwiched between two buttered buns.

[caption id="attachment_34948" align="aligncenter" width="950"] Image Credit: Chix Hot Chicken Facebook[/caption]

Also, if you’re looking for a Sunday brunch date, Chix Hot Chicken serves Chicken and Waffles ($14.90) as well! Do take note that they’re only available on Sundays.

If you’re looking for an eatery to hit up this weekend, then this is the best place to enjoy hearty and delicious fried chicken with your friends.

Who knows, you might even bump into Taufik Batisah while you’re enjoying your fried chicken!

Do note that they’re still in their soft launch phase. They have limited supply every day so you better head down early if you want to get your hands on them. If you’re running out of luck, don’t fret. Chix Hot Chicken will officially open on 19 June which means there’ll be more fried chicken for us to enjoy.

Order Your Kopi And We’ll Tell You What Kind Of Person You Are

Forget what Harry Potter house you belong in, or whether you’re an Aries or Virgo.

Kopi, however you drink it, tells a lot about your personality.

There are plenty of ways that one can enjoy Kopi (some better than others of course), everyone has a special order that they swear by.

1. Kopi O Kosong

By far, the most authentic way to enjoy your Kopi.

Just like the kopi, the authenticity resonates with all the things that you do.

No sugar no milk. You don’t sugarcoat your opinions because you know people will either love you or hate you – might as well keep it real with them.

Your friends come to you for advice because they know you’re the best person to turn to in times of need. Others may shy away when the going gets tough, but not you. You’re a strong and tough one.

2. Kopi

You’re basic, just like your kopi.

Undoubtedly, the safest and simplest way to consume your kopi. Just the right kopi-milk-sugar ratio, you blend in with the rest.

You’re less likely to end up with a poorly made cup of kopi but you’re also less likely to be remembered at any social events.

But just like regular kopi, you’ve got everything sorted out. You’ve got life all figured out.

3. Kopi C

You’re skinny like Taylor Swift in an evening gown.

Regular Kopi is not gonna work because you have to watch that waistline of yours.

Your diet consists of avocado toasts and acai bowls. You have Aerial Yoga on weekdays and weekends are for CruCycling.

Your fitspo is Sandra Riley Tang and you ONLY buy Lululemon tights.

4. Kopi Siew Dai

While others prefer their coffee bitter or sweet, you’re right in the middle.

You’re the perfect balance.

It’s not that you don’t like bitter or sweet coffee, you just prefer it that way. It’s just who you are.

You’re a cautious individual who appreciates moderations in all aspect of your life. Your significant other loves you because you give moderately and don’t ask for too much in return either. You make the perfect partner.

5. Kopi Ga Dai

You’re the opposite of your sibling, Kopi Siew Dai. You live life to your fullest (and most diabetic).

You enjoy your kopi with lots of milk and sugar because you swear that’s how kopi should be enjoyed.

You probably order a double McSpicy because you don’t know fear. It’s not in your dictionary but it’s definitely in your menu. You eat it for breakfast. Fear is afraid of you.

However, you may also be a little too reckless. So order your Kopi Ga Dai in a cup instead of a plastic bag. Go big or go hospital, as they say.

6. Kopi Peng

While some may enjoy their kopi hot, you love it cold. You’re like the rainbow after the rain. The calm before the storm.

You’re a ray of sunshine and everybody loves you. Especially in Singapore’s ridiculous weather, everyone comes running to you.

You’re the unsung hero of Singapore. We love you and we appreciate you.

7. Kopi Gu You

Only 2.8% of you make up the Kopi Gu Yao clan.

You’re punk rock in a world of pop. You break the status quo.

There’s no such thing as regular kopi in your world.

Your mantra? You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore. Also, you’re slightly insane and we’re all afraid of you.

9. Kopi Cino

You’re a true millennial.

Instead of Instagramming a tall soy latte frappucino, two pumps of vanilla, whip, double shot of espresso, extra hot but not too hot, from Starbucks, your “Iced Coffee” comes in a plastic bag because #Original.

If you could rename Kopi Cino, you’d probably spell it as KP CN because who cares for vowels anymore?

You love being extra and every single one of your Instagram posts has an emoji for a caption because words are overrated.

Old Chang Kee Finally Opens First London Outlet – Sells Curry Puff At £2.80 A Pop

Nobody in Singapore does fried food better than Old Chang Kee. Nobody.

For over half a century, Singaporeans from all walks of life have enjoyed Old Chang Kee’s hot snacks and lip-smacking quick bites. I remember buying my favourite Curry’O after school if I had any spare change. It was definitely one of my fondest memories growing up Singaporean.

Our homegrown fried food snack chain and national treasure, Old Chang Kee is now open and serving our famous curry puffs to the people of London!

[caption id="attachment_34902" align="aligncenter" width="1757"] Image Credit: Old Chang Kee UK Facebook[/caption]

S’pore’s Famous Curry Puffs

Located at Covent Garden, which is London’s main theatre and entertainment area – the shop is the franchise’s first foray into Europe.

What started off as a small stall in a coffeeshop outside the former Rex Cinema along Mackenzie Road has now claimed a spot along one of London’s busiest streets.

[caption id="attachment_34901" align="aligncenter" width="909"] Image Credit: Old Chang Kee UK Facebook[/caption]

It’s heartwarming, really, to see one of our homegrown brand become an international name.

We finally get to share our favourite curry puffs with the people of London and we truly hope that they love it as much as we do!

If you’re wondering what they’ll be serving, diners can expect to tuck into popular items such as the Chicken Curry Puffs, Curry Potato Puffs, Mushroom Chicken Puffs and Curry Chicken Rice Sets.

[caption id="attachment_34903" align="aligncenter" width="1290"] Image Credit: Burpple User Weekendeatwhat[/caption]

“But curry puff can survive in London meh?”

If you’re wondering whether these fried snacks can survive in London’s food scene – they can! London is also such a melting pot of international cuisines, so there’s definitely a place for Singaporean food.

Also, what’s better than tea and scones? Curry puffs and hot coffee – that’s for sure!

When the chain had a two day pop-up event in north-west London, the response was overwhelming! About 1,200 puffs were snapped up in the two-day event. They were sold out within four hours each day.

I guess the British love curry puffs as much as we do.

If you have friends and family residing in London, they can FINALLY get a taste of home in a foreign place. No more 2am cravings for curry puffs in the cold weather.

If you’re ever in London, be sure to pay Old Chang Kee a visit #supportlocal

This Hawker Stall In Queenstown Sells Fluffy Soufflé Pancakes For Just $1.50 Each

When I was a kid, I looked forward to Sunday mornings because that meant hotcakes from McDonald’s. I never quite understood why their hotcakes made me happy but all I knew was that the more maple syrup I poured and the more butter I spread, the happier I felt.

There’s just something comforting about digging into a plate of pancakes drenched in maple syrup and butter on a Sunday morning.

About a year ago, Insider released a video of the jiggliest most fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Ever since then, everyone forgot about good ol’ buttermilk pancakes because these Soufflé Pancakes were the next big thing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBaRWq0gXAk

Just like any foodie, I searched high and low for affordable Soufflé Pancakes in Singapore.

Until recently, I came across these cute soufflé pancakes selling for $1.50 each at Mei Ling Hawker Centre!

Wiggle, Wiggle, Wiggle

If you’re not familiar with soufflé pancakes, they’re lighter and fluffier than regular pancakes. Which explains why everyone has been jiggling this dessert for the ‘gram.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bgpt04kgP35/?tagged=soufflepancakes

You can get these pancakes in cafes and restaurants but they’ll definitely cost you more than $10.

The soufflé pancakes from Sweet Rex comes in a set of 2 for just $3!

[caption id="attachment_34894" align="aligncenter" width="1258"] Image Credit: @foodiegoh[/caption]

The fluffy pancakes from Sweet Rex are freshly made and served with a sauce of your choice – caramel, strawberry or chocolate. It’s everything you ever want in a pancake – light, airy and not too sweet.

If you could bite into clouds, then this is how I’d describe eating the soufflé pancakes from Sweet Rex.

Additionally, the stall also sells cheesecakes and puddings you can get at a low price. Here’s evidence that you can eat good even when you’re on a budget!

[caption id="attachment_34895" align="aligncenter" width="1250"] Image Credit: @sweet.rex[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_34896" align="aligncenter" width="1228"] Image Credit: @sweet.rex[/caption]

There’s chocolate, Thai milk tea, kopi, ginger and matcha pudding – which you can get at $2 each.

We highly recommend getting the Lemon Cheesecake ($3.80) which looks like “tofu”. The cake is a perfect balance of creamy and tangy, making it easy on the palate.

If you’re ever in Queenstown, then head down for Sweet Rex’s affordable desserts. However, they are only opened on weekends, and sporadically on weekdays. If you’re ever heading down on weekdays, best to give them a call!

Say Yes To The Dress – A Guide To Picking Out The Perfect Dress For Your Bridesmaids

Now that you’ve said yes to the dress of your dream, it’s time to start on your next gown shopping journey: the quest for the perfect bridesmaid dress.

Finding the “perfect” bridesmaid dress that looks good on everyone in your bridal party, sort of never happens.

We understand the struggle of finding THE bridesmaid dress to match the entire bridal party, but it doesn’t always have to be this tough.

[caption id="attachment_34824" align="aligncenter" width="509"] GIF Credit: giphy.com[/caption]

No matter your wedding style or size of your bridal party, we’ve got everything you need to know to find the right dress for your girls.

Here’s our tip on how to make bridesmaid dress shopping a breeze.

Begin By Browsing

Start of by doing some research. Browse through wedding lookbooks, bookmark your favourites and share them with your friends. Who knows, they might just give you the best advices.

If you’re flipping through magazines or browsing online, tear out pages or save images to your inspiration board to help zero in on the colours and styles you like best.

Find physical or even online stores that carry the dresses you love.

Keep Costs In Mind

Unless you’re paying for your bridesmaid dresses, then you’ll have to be considerate of your friends’ lifestyles.

If you’re concerned your wedding might be a financial burden for one or more of your bridesmaids, focus your search on dresses in a more affordable range.

Love, Bonito’s LYLAS Bridesmaid Collection creates dresses that are curated from quality fabrics at price points that are wallet-friendly. Prices start from as low as SGD$36.90 for a top and SGD$63.90 for a maxi dress.

[caption id="attachment_34818" align="aligncenter" width="4150"] Image Credit: Love, Bonito[/caption]

Best part, the collection are suited for formal and semi-formal occasions so your bridesmaids can recycle their outfits once the wedding is over.

Finding The Right Fit

We can all agree that one feels most confident in the clothes that make them look and feel good.

Never trust “Free Size” or “One Size Fits All” dresses because we know that’s not how our bodies are designed.

It’s important to dress to your body type in order to bring focus to the part where you want to accentuate and divert attention away from parts you do not.

[caption id="attachment_34821" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Love, Bonito[/caption]

For all my thick girls out there, you know how exhausting online shopping can get. Finding a dress to fit you in all the right places can be almost impossible. However, the LYLAS collection expanded their size range from XXS to XXL, so they’ve got all the best friends covered.

Take Note Of Different Styles

Not everyone has a similar taste in style. Some of your friends may dress more androgynous than feminine.

If you have friends who prefer pantsuits to midi skirts, no problem. The LYLAS collection is designed for bridesmaid to mix-and-match — with separate coordinates that pair well in any combination.

Even if there is one bridesmaid wearing an “odd-one-out” pantsuit with a lace top amongst the other midi dress, they’ll still look cohesive as a power-packed bridal party. Talk about having your very own Spice Girls at your wedding.

[caption id="attachment_34819" align="aligncenter" width="3840"] Image Credit: Love, Bonito[/caption]

Find Complementary Colours

Let’s be honest, not all of us are suited for pink, blush or baby blue. Think about choosing a shade that goes well with a variety of skin tones.

If you have a wedding theme that includes specific colours, then bridesmaid dress colours will be pretty easy to pick.

If your colour options are more open, you can go with a shade that will flatter your wedding gown or complement your flower choices. You can also choose colours that reflect the year’s wedding trends.

Designed to allow the flexibility of the bride to choose and pick her colour palette, the LYLAS collection currently offers six key colours (and counting)!

The new May 2018 Launch will introduce three new colours to the current palette of Blush, Lavender and Navy:

Dusty Blue

This colour signifies femininity reworked. The hint of grey elevates the blue with a modern edge.

Mauve

An understated yet sensual colour which ignites a sense of romance with an elegant touch.

[caption id="attachment_34820" align="aligncenter" width="3769"] Image Credit: Love, Bonito[/caption]

Maroon

This is definitely one of our favourite colours. Maroon screams sophistication, passion and power.

The theme for LYLAS May 2018 Collection is “A Celebration Of Sisterhood”. So if you want your girls to turn up at your wedding looking hotter than Taylor Swift’s Squad, Love, Bonito’s LYLAS Bridesmaid Collection is the one stop place for all your bridesmaid needs.

Famed for their milk tea and condensed milk buns, Tsui Wah has risen to become a household name in Hong Kong.

The Cha Chaan Teng has confirmed it will open its first Southeast Asia outlet – with a seating capacity of over 140 from 1pm on June 15 at Clarke Quay.

Does this mean, “No need to fly to Hong Kong liao?”

Who knows? But one thing’s for sure, we’re excited to finally get Tsui Wah’s famous milk tea and treats without having to pay for a flight ticket.

Milk Tea For Days

The most famous Cha Chaan Teng in Hong Kong is undisputedly Tsui Wah Restaurant. Locals and tourists alike flock to Tsui Wah Restaurant for their signature milk tea and crispy bun with condensed milk.

With a network of over 60 outlets in Hong Kong, Macau and China, Tsui Wah manages to maintain its high standards across all their branches.

So for all you Tsui Wah fans, mark your calendars as your favourite Cha Chaan Teng makes a debut in Singapore.

If this is your first time hearing about Tsui Wah, don’t worry. Here are some of the signature items you should try.

Disclaimer: Some of the items may not be in their menu during their opening but more exciting updates are to come as the menu progressively expands in the upcoming months!

1. Crispy Bun with Sweet Condensed Milk

“Crispy Bun served with sweet condensed milk” is Tsui Wah’s reinvention of a classic Hong Kong snack.

Each freshly baked bun is richly coated with thick butter and condensed milk, giving it an irresistible taste that is crispy on the outside and soft inside.

2. Hainanese Chicken Rice

Juicy, boneless and tender, the dish is served with a bowl of flavoured rice made with chicken stock, basil and lemon grass.

Everyone raves about the Hainanese Chicken Rice at Tsui Wah, so if you’re looking for real good comfort food, their Chicken Rice should definitely be one of your choices.

3. Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Flat Rice Noodles in Fish Soup

If you’re in need of a warm, hearty bowl of soup, this dish won’t disappoint.

Tsui Wah fish balls are made daily with handpicked yellow eels and over 10 types of fresh fish. Some have claimed that they’ve had better fish soups in Singapore, but if you’re looking for a quick, fuss free supper choice, then get this fish soup!

This is definitely the ultimate go-to after drinks at Clarke Quay!

4. Swiss Sauce Chicken Wings

Tsui Wah takes this Cantonese favourite to the next level by marinating the wings with aromatic sweet soy sauce. The wings absorb the sweet soy sauce fully and offer a real treat of juiciness and tenderness.

This dish is finger lickin’ good, that’s for sure.

5. King Prawns in XO Sauce with Tossed Noodles

This is one of Tsui Wah’s signature items as well!

Their king prawns are succulent and fresh! The noodles are slightly chewy and thin. It also comes with chilli on the side for that extra kick.

Honestly, this seems like a dish most won’t mind eating everyday!

6. HK Milk Tea

Saving the best for last, Tsui Wah combines premium Ceylon tea leaves and with many years of teas-training know-how to bring the perfect cup.

With a touch of Holland’s Black & White evaporated milk in a preheated teacup, this milk tea is perfection.

We’re extremely excited for Tsui Wah’s first outlet in Clarke Quay. As much as we’d all love a trip to Hong Kong for a break, I’m definitely happy that we can FINALLY get their famous dishes and milk tea right here in Singapore.

We definitely expect long queues on June 15, so go early to beat the crowd!

Artbox 2018: What To Eat, Drink And Buy To Make The Most Of Your Money

It’s that time of the year again! Artbox Singapore is back for its second run, and promises to be bigger and better than before.

If you’ve been to Artbox last year, you may have left severely disappointed as the event faced an overwhelming turnout. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, it is a wildly popular market that supports local creators retailing everything from beauty, fashion, food and art.

Originating from Bangkok, Artbox Singapore recreates the vibrancy of Thai night markets, but you wouldn’t need a flight ticket this time.

So if you’ve got a bae and some friends, head down to Artbox Singapore which spans over two weekends from 25-27 May 2018 as well as 1-3 June 2018 from 3-11 pm at the Bayfront Event Space near The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

Food At Artbox Singapore 2018

If you saw the insta-worthy food pics from last year, you’ll know that food is the main highlight of the event. Dive into over 160 bustling F&B stalls each weekend for a wide variety of food to choose from.

Here’s what we got that definitely got DiscoverSG’s stamp of approval. Now, the food at Artbox is not Thai-Night-Market-Cheap but we tried out food that’s worth your money and not overly pretentious.

1. Golden Moments

I’m a huge fan of durian. I’m not being biased but this is definitely one of THE best Mao Shan Wang Ice Cream ($9.90) I’ve tried in Singapore.

Just look at it!

[caption id="attachment_34752" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The bamboo charcoal infused ice cream has a subtle hint of MSW flavour. It is bittersweet and creamy and topped with 24K gold leaves.

I expected it to be jelak after a few bites but I surprisingly managed to devour the entire durian ice cream without feeling sick or heaty. If you’re not a huge durian lover, this ice cream might just change your mind.

It was slightly pricey for what is essentially durian ice cream, but it is definitely worth trying.

This limited edition ice cream is making its first appearance at this year’s Artbox, so if you know anyone who loves durian, you HAVE to bring them here.

If the ice cream is not enough, you can also try their Durian Platter ($18.80) which consists of durian mochi, durian puffs and the ice cream.

[caption id="attachment_34753" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

If you’re in need of a good dessert, then Golden Moments is a must visit at this year’s Artbox.

2. Saiko

Don’t you just hate it when you buy takoyaki at a pasar malam and you can barely taste the octopus in it?

Serving up Japanese street food realness, Saiko serves takoyaki in sizeable portions with full bite-sized octopus. You can choose from 3 different fillings – octopus, chicken and braised mushrooms. You also have the option of mixing 2 different fillings in one serving.

[caption id="attachment_34760" align="aligncenter" width="4029"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

We got their Classic ($8) which comes with 6 takoyaki topped with bonito flakes, seaweed and torched Japanese mayo.

[caption id="attachment_34759" align="aligncenter" width="3807"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

This was hands down one of the best Takoyaki I’ve had in a very long time. It’s also the perfect bite-sized snack as you walk around Artbox.

3. Cha Tra Mue

When in Thailand, always get their Thai Milk Tea!

The weather was scorching hot and we were in desperate need of a good drink. We walked around and came across a stall selling the famous Cha Tra Mue brand teas.

[caption id="attachment_34761" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You no longer have to ask your friends to buy you a packet of instant Cha Tra Mue from Thailand because its readily available at most bazaars and festivals in Singapore.

We recommend getting the 1-litre Thai Milk Tea ($4) because it is an absolute life saver in Singapore’s crazy weather. 10/10 would buy again!

4. The6ixsRosti

I was surprised to find a stall specialising in rosti at Artbox. I had high hopes for this one as I saw a queue forming at The6ixsRosti.

Being the typical kiasu Singaporean that I am, I knew I had to try this rosti.

[caption id="attachment_34763" align="aligncenter" width="3589"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

We opted for the Spicy Rosti with Mozarella Cheese ($7) – perhaps one of my favourite purchases of the day.

[caption id="attachment_34762" align="aligncenter" width="3845"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The rosti is pan fried to perfection. It’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The spicy rosti actually had quite a kick to it, so if you can handle your spice, opt for the spicy rosti.

5. Thai Foodie Palace SG

I knew I couldn’t leave Artbox without getting any Thai Desserts. Just like any other basic Singaporean, I knew I couldn’t leave without trying the Mango Sticky Rice.

The cheapest Mango Sticky Rice I could find at Artbox was from Foodie Palace SG which sold a box for $6.

[caption id="attachment_34758" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

I never thought I would ever have to pay $6 for mango sticky rice, but I can’t complain. Their mango sticky rice turned out to be pretty good. The mango was sweet and they gave us a generous portion of sticky rice as well.

[caption id="attachment_34757" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Safe to say, we wiped the entire box clean. It was the perfect ending to my food hunt at Artbox.

Cheap Cheap, Good Good

Besides the food, you can also explore more than 200 retail booths! Each weekend brings forth a different set of unique and creative lifestyle and fashion vendors from Thailand and Singapore.

6. Oasis:Skin

If you’re in need of a good skincare routine, Oasis:Skin is an all-natural skincare company that believes in delivering high quality plant-based products that can help people rebuild their skin barrier in a natural way.

[caption id="attachment_34768" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

They use 100% natural and high-quality ingredients that are carefully sourced from artisanal producers and botanical experts from all over the world.

If your skin is in need of some desperate TLC, then you should try out their face mists. They have several face mists that targets dry skin, oily skin and even sensitive skin!

[caption id="attachment_34770" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

They also sell clay masks for those “treat yo’self” kind of days. The masks are packaged in its pure clay form as it has a longer shelf life, and there is no need for any harmful chemicals to preserve it.

[caption id="attachment_34769" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

7. Common Touch

If you’re looking for unique and quirky pieces to place around the house, then you’ll love the ceramics by Common Touch.

[caption id="attachment_34767" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Common Touch is a Singapore-based craft unit working together to create distinctive and purely handcrafted ceramic homeware. From different types of clay and combination of stains and glazes, each piece is hand-thrown and individually crafted.

[caption id="attachment_34764" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You can also get hand-made jewellery at this store. If you know anyone who is a fan of minimal jewellery, then you should definitely check out Common Touch at Artbox!

[caption id="attachment_34766" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You can also find plenty of stalls around Artbox selling everything from tops and pants to tote bags and leather wallets. What’s more, you can pay by DBS PayLah! at most stalls so you don’t have to worry about running out of cash after all that shopping!

This year’s Artbox definitely did not disappoint. With a variety of retail booths and F&B stalls to choose from, there’s definitely something for everyone here.

Pro-tip: Carry and umbrella and wear comfortable clothes because our weather is extremely unpredictable!
