Have A Scent-Sational Time At This Pop-Up That Lets You Create Your Own Fragrance For Under $50

Can’t seem to find the perfect fragrance to complement your style and personality? Or simply looking to switch things up?

Whichever it is, we’ve got the solution!

As part of its pop-up store promo this month, up-and-coming fragrance and mixology specialist Oo La Lab has launched Chemistry of Oo, a sensorial workshop where you can not only learn all about fragrance design, but also create your own personalised fragrance.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? The DiscoverSG team attended one of these sessions with our ambassadors just last week, so here’s a whiff of what to expect at Chemistry of Oo:

A Scent-sational Experience

[caption id="attachment_27648" align="aligncenter" width="4752"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s imperative that you identify 5 to 7 notes (from over 25) you like best to ensure you love your final product. For those unacquainted, ‘notes’ is fragrance terminology for the basic building blocks of scent. Because your fragrance is going to be uniquely you, you’ll need to take note (pun intended) of what you like and have an idea of what fragrance you want to end up with.

Notes vary in intensity and type. They can be fresh, floral, oriental or woody. From the subtle and fresh Citrus and Tea scents to the more intense and complex Musk, Chypre and even Leather, there’s something for everyone!

[caption id="attachment_27650" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] With over 25 basic notes, there’s something for everyone (Image Credit: Vivienne)[/caption]

Getting It Just Right

[caption id="attachment_27651" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Building your own fragrance 101 (Image Credit: Vivienne)[/caption]

After you’ve identified your favourite notes, it’s time to try out the various combinations to see what works best!

Since you’ll be combining about 5 notes, you’ll need to experiment with various proportions to see how they turn out. This is where the fun really starts!

Participants will each receive a mini chemistry set of sorts, complete with a test tube, beaker, vials and more. Instructions are clear and easy to follow, and should you have any questions (e.g the ideal ratio), simply ask the staff at Oo La Lab and they’ll be more than happy to give you some tips.

[caption id="attachment_27653" align="aligncenter" width="4898"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

Don’t be afraid to make as many attempts as you need to get your fragrance exactly right!

Mixing Your Fragrance

[caption id="attachment_27652" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] DiscoverSG Ambassadors Chelsea and Cheryl hard at work (Image Credit: Cheryl)[/caption]

Once you’re happy with your concoction, it’s time to actually build your fragrance and bottle it up!

All you have to do is mix the notes in the ratio that you want, but at a much greater volume. This is made easy with the measuring cylinder provided. A checklist will also be provided so you can keep track of all the notes that will go into your bottle.

[caption id="attachment_27654" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

You will be provided with a pretty bottle to keep your fragrance. The default size is 20ml.

Crimp, Label and Seal The Deal

[caption id="attachment_27655" align="aligncenter" width="4898"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

When you’re done mixing your fragrance, you’ll need to bring your bottle to one of the staff, who will then add a dash of ethanol and finally seal – or crimp – your bottle. You’ll also get to name your own custom-made fragrance, which will appear on the label! Name it whatever you want and once your bottle is sealed, voilà, you’re done!

[caption id="attachment_27656" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Posing with our proud creations! (Image Credit: Cheryl)[/caption]

5 Tips For A Cheaper Staycation In Sentosa

When we talk about staycations in Singapore, Sentosa is bound to come to mind. Just imagine: a little beach paradise featuring top-notch restaurants and several five-star hotels, not to mention a superb aquarium and a couple of theme parks – all just minutes away from the mainland to boot.

Seriously, what’s not to love? With all that it has to offer, it’s no wonder that Sentosa remains a top choice for staycations. But as any visitor to Sentosa probably knows, “cheap” things don’t really exist in this tourist hotspot. Indeed, Sentosa is also home to some of the most expensive hotels in the country, with rates that can easily run into the thousands.

Still, don’t be disheartened! Even if you’re on a tighter budget, there are ways of turning that dream of yours into a reality. So if you’d like to know more about how you can have a dream staycay without burning a hole in your wallet, read on!

1. Be flexible, widen your options

If you have a limited budget to work with, then you’ll have to be flexible and realistic. Capella Hotel may be incredibly luxurious and grand, but it comes with a hefty price tag – are you prepared to fork out something like $500-1000 a night? If that doesn’t sit well with you, then why not try another hotel?

After all, a staycation at Capella is really not the only way to have a great beach holiday! Instead, do consider Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa (about $200-400/night), Siloso Beach Resort (around $200-300/night) or even Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa (from $233/night), all of which are more affordable and just as charming.

If you’re looking for something new, check out these newly launched hotels below by Far East Hospitality!

Family vacationers can stay at the family-friendly Village Hotel Sentosa (from $235/night)! With connecting family rooms, kid-amenities and a mega pool deck, this hotel is designed ideally for young families! The hotel also features many free activities like Family Scavenger Hunts, movie nights by the pool and more!

If a couple’s getaway is what you’re after, visit The Outpost Hotel Sentosa (from $250/night) then. This hotel caters exclusively for adults and features a new concept which allows you to select your own room views and customize your own minibar items! Don’t forget to check out their exclusive rooftop pool, where you can sip on evening cocktails with stunning coastal views as your backdrop.

2. Be on the lookout for deals and promotions

Okay, this one sounds like a no-brainer, but in all honesty – do you know where to look? While places like Groupon occasionally have special staycation deals for some hotels, do check places such as the

Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Onsen Suite Image Credits: Honeycombers
Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Onsen Suite Image Credits: Honeycombers

Some ongoing offers at the moment include the 3D2N Hotel and Multi-Attractions Package, which includes both a hotel stay and 2 adult passes to Adventure Cove Waterpark, S.E.A. Aquarium and Universal Studios Singapore (price from $708), as well as a 3D2N Deluxe Room stay at Siloso Beach Resort, which comes with two full-day adult passes for Universal Studios Singapore (price from $515).

3. If you can, book your room on the hotel’s website directly

Although booking websites such as Hotels.com, Agoda and Expedia have made hotel searching and price comparison more efficient, they tend to be more expensive than simply booking from the hotel website directly as they charge an extra middleman fee. This is despite each website claiming to be the cheapest amongst all.

While the difference is often not a lot, there’s somehow a sense of satisfaction in knowing that you secured the best possible deal. I mean, you clicked on this article to find out how to save money, so every dollar counts in the long run!

4
Siloso Beach Resort Image Credits: Green City Trips

That being said, these booking websites do have pretty good deals once in a while, so don’t dismiss them entirely. The bottom line is: don’t simply rely on one single website or app when it comes to booking. Keep checking and comparing if you really want to save up!

4) Book early (or earlier)

Again, this one sounds pretty duh, especially since everyone knows that the early bird catches the worm offer. The thing is, as little planning needs to be done for staycations, bookings tend to be more last-minute.

However, in order for you to do steps 1 to 3, you’ll need some time – researching is time-consuming you know! Plus, if you’re eyeing a particular date such as a long weekend or public holiday, chances are that demand for hotel rooms is going to be really high. So if you don’t book early enough and are dead set on that date, you may end up paying significantly more for the same room. Booking early will also mean a higher chance of securing better deals, not to mention getting what you want.

Amara Sanctuary’s advance special, for instance, can help you save up to 30% if you book 30 days in advance. Click

Sofitel Singapore Image Credits: Sofitel Hotels and Resorts

You’re already in a nice room, and since there’s no one else around, the ambience is all the more intimate! No music? Simply bring along some portable speakers or play some chill tunes from your phone. There really isn’t a need to head to the bar (unless that’s really your thing) since the atmosphere’s already perfect.

Lastly, if you are going to BYOB, remember to plan and bring along other staycay essentials! Be it a movie to watch, some junk food to snack the night away, or perhaps even a Durex condom if it’s a staycay with your SO, do make sure you’re well-prepared to have a good time!

And there you have it!

Even though having a staycay at Sentosa isn’t exactly cheap, there’s still quite a bit you can take note of to save some money or at least, make it more worth the price. “Cheap” is relative, but no matter the budget, we’re sure every dollar counts in the long run.

8 Korean BBQ: For Premium Pork Belly That Will Leave You Begging For More!

Heads up, fellow Korean BBQ lovers, for we have some good news for you! The ever-popular E!GHT Korean BBQ has just opened its second outlet at Shaw Centre with a bigger and juicier menu to boot.

eght-korean-bbq-exterior-of-shaw-centres-branch

Good things should be shared, and after a delectable experience at E!GHT’s flagship outlet at Clark Quay, we just can’t wait to tell you more about our experience.

Here’s why E!GHT Korean BBQ ought to be on your to-eat list:

E!GHT’s Signature 8 Colours Set

With the restaurant named after this dish, the 8 Colours Set is without doubt, the pride and joy of E!GHT Korean BBQ.

eght-korean-bbq-8-colours-set-98-1

As its name suggests, you’ll be able to savour 8 mouth-watering strips of pork belly, all marinated in 8 different flavours.

The list of flavours to expect, in the recommended order of tasting are: wine, original, garlic, herb, curry, miso, red pepper paste, and finally kalbi.

[caption id="attachment_17810" align="aligncenter" width="454"]Cooking in progress! (Image Credits: Author) Cooking in progress! (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]

Included in the set are some side dishes (such as kimchi) as well as seafood bean paste stew.

How’s that for a fulfilling meal?

[caption id="attachment_17811" align="aligncenter" width="527"]img_0925 Fully cooked! (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]

The proper and oh-so-good way to eat Korean BBQ: wrap the meat inside a lettuce leaf, add kimchi and sauce, and stuff it all into your mouth!

[caption id="attachment_17812" align="aligncenter" width="523"]img_0939 (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]

Here’s the seafood bean paste stew that comes with the set!

13221443_944117165685442_6815794751399664023_n

The 8 Colours Set costs $98, and serves 3-4 people.

If you’re looking for something less filling, you could also go for smaller sets such as the Flower Pork Set ($68) or the 4 Colours Set ($58).

As with the 8 Colours Set, all of these sets come with side dishes and seafood bean paste stew.

If you’re wondering why the meat appears to be slightly pricey, it’s because all of these sets feature Mangalitsa pork, a top-grade Hungarian variety. We can vouch for its quality – it is incredibly juicy and tender.

14572849_1062102640553560_940651025631955919_n

In fact, Mangalitsa is said to be the “Kobe beef” of pork! Apparently, it is lower in cholesterol, and possesses higher levels of zinc and iron as compared to other types of pork. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth here.

More than just pork

If you’d like more than just BBQ pork, don’t worry, because the restaurant serves other dishes too!

eght-korean-bbq-8-colours-bibimbap-16

From Beef Bulgogi Bibimbap ($18) to Kimchi Fried Rice ($8) and Seafood Pancake ($20), there’s definitely enough variety for you to complete your meal as you wish.

Those who’re on a tighter budget can also consider the weekday set lunches and specials -rice and stew sets from $8.

Kimchi Fried Rice with Mozzarella, Mangalitsa Pork, Bonito Flakes, and Egg

One of the comfort foods of Korean cuisine – Kimchi fried rice!

Some house brew, anyone?

As any Korean will know, no Korean BBQ meal is complete without some good alcohol.

Keeping in line with this practice, E!GHT Korean BBQ offers a great selection of drinks on its menu as well.

12049410_828021290628364_3052815342069695816_n

While standard fare such as beer and soju can be found on the drinks menu, the highlight we feel has definitely got to be their flavoured makgeoli (fermented Korean rice wine), all of which are brewed in-house.

Diners can choose from several flavours, such as the new Organic Honey Makgeolli ($35), as well as the Yucha Makgeolli ($35), Passionfruit Makgeolli ($35) and Joo Brew ($28).

[caption id="attachment_17821" align="aligncenter" width="384"]img_0961 Yucha Makgeolli! (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]

We particularly liked the Yucha Makgeolli since it was so refreshing, with the right amount of sweetness – definitely the perfect complement to a savoury meal!

Full service amidst a comfortable setting

With a seating capacity of 80, the new outlet at Shaw Centre looks to be just as spacious – if not even more so – than its Clark Quay counterpart. [=

The place is large and spacious – no worries about bringing a large group of friends here then!

14202575_1026533840777107_7160597601030242679_n

You can also expect full service at E!GHT, where staff will prepare all the food for you. All you really need to do is eat.

Perhaps the most attractive point of all – besides the food – would be the restaurant’s effective ventilation system, which guarantees that you’ll leave the place without smelling like BBQ for the rest of the day. How awesome is that?

So there you have it!

Sounds delectable, doesn’t it?

Now that you know what lies in store for you, all that’s left to do is to head to town and satisfy your carvings!

Best of all, both outlets are centrally located and easily accessible, which means they are convenient for everyone.

Bon appétit!

Pokemon Go Gym – Tips To Battle Better Cos Competition In Singapore Is Intense!

If you’ve played Pokemon Go enough, you’d know that taking over a Pokemon Go gym in Singapore is no simple feat. The competition is intense – you take over one Pokemon Go gym, only to find that your prized Pokemon gets unceremoniously kicked out mere minutes (or even seconds) later.

However, just because it’s tough to win a Pokemon Go gym doesn’t mean you should miss out on the fun! After all, battling has always been one of the most exciting aspects of Pokemon, and also because winning simply feels awesome.

We know how shiok it feels like when you finally manage to take over a Pokemon Go gym (even if it’s just for 10 seconds). That’s why we’ve done the research. Here are some tips that will make it easier for you to take over a Pokemon Go gym!

If you’d like to know how to become a Pokemon Go gym leader with less effort, simply read on!

Image Credits: Credit: Dragon-type Pokemon are weak to Fairy-type, Ice-type and Dragon-type attacks

  • Flying-type Pokemon are weak to Ice-, Rock- and Electric-type attacks
  • Psychic-type Pokemon are weak to Bug-, Ghost- and Dark-type attacks
  • Some, however, are pretty tricky. If you didn’t know much about Pokemon before you started Pokemon Go, you may find them tough to remember.

If you’re not sure what type your Pokemon is, it’s reflected at their profile page! Jynx – Ice & Psychic. Pikachu – Electric. Vaporeon – Water.

    [caption id="attachment_13073" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Credit: Techaeris Credit: Pokemon 2

Image Credits: 3. Table of Pokemon types & moves

Below is a table of Pokemon types and move types, as well as their respective effectiveness against various other Pokemon types.

1x denotes a normal amount of damage, while 1/2x denotes half the amount of damage (“not very effective”) and so on.

    Pokemon 5

Image Credits: Really complicated stuff, eh?

So, why does all this matter? Knowing what works against your opponent makes for a speedier and easier battle, so you won’t have to spend too much time or resources simply battling one gym.

    Pokemon 4

Image Credits: Alright, so this is a continuation from the tip above. Since it’s impossible to remember everything all at once, we’ve decided to shortlist some Pokemon often seen in gyms in Singapore and how to go about defeating them as efficiently as possible.

    Gyarados:

    Pokemon 8

A dual Water- and Flying-type, this Pokemon is doubly weak against Electric-type moves, so bring out that Magneton, Electabuzz or Jolteon!

    Lapras:

    Pokemon 4

Lapras is both a Water- and Ice-type Pokemon, so again, Electric-type Pokemon can do the trick. Fighting-, Rock- and Grass-type attacks should be able to score some hits too. although Rock- and Grass-type Pokemon are weak to Water- and Ice-type attacks too, so exercise some caution.

    Dragonite:

This Normal-type Pokemon may have a lot of HP and good defense stats, but it’s weak to Fighting-type attacks, so use a Machoke, Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan if you can!

If you don’t have a good Fighting-type Pokemon, fret not, because Pokemon like Magmar and Pinsir possess Fighting-type moves sometimes. Ghost-type attacks also don’t work on Normal-type Pokemon, so don’t bring your Ghost Pokemon into battle!

    5. Take down gyms with fellow teammates

Although you may now know various tips and tricks to taking over gyms, doing it alone is still really tough. And that’s why you need to call your friends for backup!

Fighting together means that you can take the Pokemon down much quicker. You’ll notice extra attacks from elsewhere targeting the opponent, which means your own Pokemon are less likely to faint. It’s really much faster this way, and you can save on those precious Super and Hyper Potions too!

    Pokemon 11

Image Credits: Of course, even with all this knowledge, it’s still important to have strong Pokemon, so that you’ll be in better position to battle as well as hold on to your Pokemon Go gym leadership.

Remember: be sure to collect your PokeCoins from the shop as soon as you’ve taken over (unless you’re super confident you can hold on to that gym for a while). Otherwise, your efforts would have been wasted.

Now that you’ve read these tips, we hope that you’ll be more well-prepared to take over some gyms and finally be able to conquer ’em all! Let’s go!

[Pokemon Go Crucial Tips] Wanna Be The Very Best? You’ve Got To Know These!

It’s official. Pokemon Go is EVERYWHERE. And you’re going to need some Pokemon Go crucial tips to be the very best! Over this past week or so, you’d be more likely than not to run into someone staring intently at their phone screens. They walk, abruptly stop, and may even exclaim in excitement. All these in the name of catching virtual creatures and battling gyms.

However, getting to the top is never easy. With the sheer number of people playing this game so intensely, competition is stiff and very, very real. Especially in Singapore.

So, if you’re one of those striving very hard to be the best, fret not! Team Discover SG is here to help! There’s more to Pokemon Go than simply catching ’em all. Read on for Pokemon Go crucial tips.

    1. How To Meet Stronger Pokemon

In order to meet stronger Pokemon, you’ll first need to level up. While you can power up your Pokemon with some stardust and their respective candies, there’s no point in doing so. Especially if your level isn’t high.

    2. How To Level Up Quickly

After all, you’re definitely going to meet (and catch) stronger Pokemon out there. Focus on increasing your level and the stronger Pokemon will come.

[caption id="attachment_12995" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Credit: imore Credit: If you’re looking to level up as quickly as possible, then evolution is your best bet: for every Pokemon you evolve, you get 500XP (experience points).

    3. Which Pokemon To Evolve For More XP

Now comes the question. Which Pokemon to evolve?

Answer: Caterpie, Weedle, and Pidgey. Why?

[caption id="attachment_12989" align="aligncenter" width="1500"] Credit: Because these Pokemon are incredibly common. Not only that, you also only need 12 candies (3 catches) to evolve these Pokemon. Since you get the same amount of XP regardless of the Pokemon you evolve, this is the easiest and fastest method to level up!

Plus, these Pokemon are practically everywhere. So, just collect as many and evolve them when you can! Don’t worry about having multiple useless Pokemon – simply transfer them for the candy.

You’ll soon see your level climbing steadily in no time!

    4. Getting Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon

When in the original games, you had to obtain Water, Thunder or Fire Stones to evolve Eevee to whichever Pokemon you want. In Pokemon Go, it all really depends on luck, meaning you’ll need to hope for the best.

    [caption id="attachment_12288" align="alignnone" width="1024"]IMG_0637 Image Credits: Author[/caption]

However, there’s a trick to making sure you’ll get what you want all the time. It’s really simple – all you have to do is give the correct nickname to your Eevee before evolution.

To get a Vaporeon, rename your Eevee to Rainer. For Jolteon, Sparky. If you’d like a Flareon, rename your Eevee to Pyro. That’s all there is to it!

Also, for some reason, Jolteon seems to have the lowest Combat Power (CP) of the three, while Vaporeon tends to be the strongest.

    5. Fighting Gyms Gives You Benefits

If you’ve noticed, there’s intense competition in battling for gym leadership. That’s because becoming a gym leader gives you benefits. When you take over a gym, you can assign any one of your Pokemon to the gym, making you a gym leader.

You can then exchange these coins for in-game items such as Poke Balls, lure modules, lucky eggs and even bag upgrades. All without having to spend real cash on these items!

So there you have it – Pokemon Go crucial tips so you can be the very best. Of course, we hope all you trainers out there can enjoy the game to the fullest. If there are any issues, feel free to feedback on the Niantic webpage.
