This Japanese-Inspired French Patisserie Serves Cakes That Are Too Pretty To Eat

If there’s one thing that I can eat for the rest of my life, it would be a good slice of cake.

Now I love cakes as much as, if not more than, the next person. I look forward to my birthday every year because I know I’ll get to indulge in a rich Belgium dark chocolate cake, finished with a silky chocolate glaze.

I thought no other cakes could ever win my heart. Until, I came across a beautiful, magnificent piece of cake.

After a bit more research, it led me to this really quaint and simple patisserie. Flor Patisserie, you’ve won my heart this time round.

Fantastic Cakes And Where To Eat Them

Flor Patisserie is a Japanese-styled patisserie that serves authentic Japanese inspired French pastry.

They pride in using the freshest and best quality ingredients that have been sourced from overseas (Japan, Belgium, and France), and locally.

The chef at Flor Patisserie, Heidi, aims to create pastries based on the principle of honest baking with the finest ingredients.

Needless to say, their creations are truly a work of art.

Now that Cherry Blossom season is in full swing, Flor Patisserie is serving up sakura themed pastries and you for sure don’t want to miss any of it.

First up, we have the Sakura Tofu Chiffon which is made with salt-pickled Sakura blossoms.

The Sakura Pie is a puff pastry filled with almond cream, and topped with Sakura chantilly and strawberries. This pie is only available at their Takashimaya outlet.

They also sell mini versions of the Sakura Pie which will be available in all outlets. This pie is made out of Sakura cream, pickled Sakura flower, and a creme d’amandes pie base.

You can also gift your friends these cute Sakura Honey Cakes which is part of their Sakura Gift Range. These cakes are available in a box of 10.

Honestly, I’ll just buy an entire box and gift it to myself instead.

This final pastry definitely wins my heart.

The White Strawberry Tart is made with Awayuki strawberry of the Sage prefecture in Japan. The Awayuki strawberries were hand carried back from Tsukiji Market in Japan so you know you’re getting the best stuff.

The sweet strawberry is paired with a fragrant creme d’amandes tart, filled with custard and topped with chantilly.

As this is a seasonal item on the menu, Flor Patisserie only makes a limited amount of these pretty tarts! It’s best to call the outlet and reserve the tarts in advance.

You can order whole cakes via their website and enjoy a 5% discount. Best part, there’s a delivery option so you can order their cakes for any special occasion.

So if you’re wondering where to bring your family or friends to this weekend, this patisserie will definitely satisfy all your sweet tooth cravings.

Meat n’ Chill is known for serving up a gigantic 500g New York Strip at just $35. Talk about value for money!

However, if you don’t have a monstrous appetite, the New York Strip 300g ($21) will be perfect for you. It also comes with 2 sides of your choice.

3. The Royals Steakhouse

The Royals franchise started out as a dessert and cake shop along East Coast Road. As business grew, they continued to open restaurants all over the city.

The Royals Steakhouse started business in 2015, in a little shophouse unit along Jalan Pisang serving premium quality Halal steaks from Australia and New Zealand.

In fact, the steak here is so good that they separate the sauces from the meat so you can truly taste the original flavour of the steak.

The Tomahawk steak seems like something from The Flintstones, but this huge slab of steak is perfect for sharing with family.

Priced at $9.50 per 100g, the Tomahawk steak typically weighs between 1.3kg – 1.5kg. The price is such a steal however for a limited time only as it is an introductory offer for their Tomahawk.

Just look at the amount of meat!

As the Tomahawk is a special item on the menu, customers are advised to call up beforehand to enquire about stock availability and to make reservations.

Just in case you prefer something that isn’t too crazy, The Prime New Zealand Ribeye 200-220g ($28) is the perfect choice for you.

The ribeye is lightly dabbed with salt before grilling. The exterior is nicely charred while retaining a juicy red centre.

Due to limited seats, reservations are strongly encouraged so you won’t be disappointed by the long queues!

4. T Bob’s Corner

T Bob’s Corner is a Muslim owned cafe located in the corner of a HDB in Bedok. Despite its rather interesting location, they serve huge portions of steak at very reasonable prices.

The Black Angus Striploin ($28.90) comes with your choice of black pepper sauce or brown gravy.

They also serve this crazy 1.4kg Angus Tomahawk ($159.90) if you’ve got an appetite of a whale. It’s ridiculously huge and serves up to 4 people. It still costs under $40 per head when shared among 4 friends.

Just look at it.

5. Huber’s Butchery & Bistro

You’ll probably know Huber’s Butchery for supplying meat to restaurants around Singapore. However, did you know that you can dine in at Huber’s Bistro?

There’s not much options for steaks you can choose from however we do recommend you getting the U.S. Prime Sirloin Steak 220g ($28). It is served with a herb and butter flavoured brown sauce.

If you like your steak tender, packed full of flavour and still moo-ing then the onglet is much cheaper and has three times the flavour.

Huber’s Angus Hanging Onglet 160g ($18) is the perfect choice if you enjoy the strong beefy flavour. It comes topped with onion confit and served with fries.

Les Bouchons is known for serving one of the best steak and fries in town. This quaint parisian style restaurant may be small but their steak frites are highly raved about.

Served medium rare, the Ribeye Steak Frites ($39.80) sports a crusty char and tender, juicy meat. At just $39.80, it is incredibly value for money.

The steak frites comes with a cap of vigneron flavoured butter which adds a depth of flavour to the steak. It also comes with a house salad and free flow fries.

If you’re looking for a romantic date night, Les Bouchons is definitely the place to go to!

boChinche is the perfect place to head down to if you’re looking for a steak lunch in the CBD area. This Argentinian restaurant serves up value for money set lunches so you get to indulge without breaking the bank.

Their Lunch Prix-Frixe menu offers a choice of 2 or 3 courses ($32/$38).

Known for their meats, the Argentine Flank Steak served with wedges and chimichurri mayo is the most loved item on their Prixe-Frixe menu!

Ah Japan, you never fail to impress us with your weird themed cafes. This one is no exception. For most eateries, you’d expect to be treated with exceptional service.

Not this one.

Pay a fee to be hurled with insults and rudely attended to by Japanese maids and butlers at Tsundere Cafe.

A Dish Best Served Cold

After a successful first run back in February, Tsundere Cafe will be back on June 9 at Luminos in Woodlands.

While it’s rather bizarre and uncommon in Singapore, customers have commented that they previously enjoyed the first pop-up.

The word ‘Tsundere’ is a Japanese term for a character development process that describes a person who is initially hostile before gradually showing a warmer side over time.

Customers can expect to be ignored and disrespectfully treated by the staff. They may look kawaii and demure but don’t be surprised if they slam trays on your table and throw menus at you.

If you need the staff to sayang you, pay an additional $2 for a “gacha” or special service such as feeding, massage, dekopin (forehead flick), games and polaroid photos.

Request for a particular service will cost you $5. Upon reaching your 10 gacha roll, expect a “deredere” treatment. Whatever that means.

Anyway, if you can’t deal with slow service and rudeness, don’t attempt to rebuke or scold the staff members. I mean, you literally pay to get abused, what are you expecting?

So if you really need someone to feed your masochistic side or you just want to check out what this whole cafe is about, then go ahead. Reserve a table before they run out of seats.

Gather Your Amigos For Affordable Halal Spanish Tapas At The Great Mischief

Great news for all you trendsetters, influencers, vloggers, cafe hoppers, young couples looking for a place to paktor and you!

You’ve seen this Wes Anderson style hotel in Little India but did you know that there’s more to it than just pastel walls and vintage decor? Sprawled across the lobby of The Great Madras Hotel, is a brand new cafe serving halal Catalan-inspired fare.

If you’re planning on where to have brunch this weekend, this hidden gem in Little India is your go-to brunch spot with your amigos.

Run by the lovely folks behind The Black Hole Group who operates Working Title, Afterwit, The Mad Sailors and Santap, you know the food served at The Great Mischief is gonna be amazing.

Gather Your Companeros

Located right smack in backpacker’s haven, The Great Mischief is a cafe located conveniently at the lobby of The Great Madras Hotel, with open air dining and al-fresco seats.

The Great Mischief serves some seriously amazing Spanish tapas ideal for sharing and gathering.

Even though we have zero idea on how to pronounce at least half of the food items on here, they all sound bloody amazing. Just take a look at it!

There’s a variety of tapas for you to choose from at very affordable prices. Perfect for all you individuals going on a budget but still want to enjoy quality food!

The Croquetas ($9) is what we describe as love at first bite. Choose between pulled beef or chopped mushrooms in breaded smashed potatoes.

Another hit on their menu is the Gambas Al Ajillo ($12). These prawns are perfectly pan fried and tossed in their homemade garlic sauce. These prawns really packs a punch of flavours.

They’ve recently revealed a Raciones menu as well! It is not typical to order raciones by yourself; the portions are far too large to be enjoyed without company. To do so would really limit the variety of what you are trying since you are unlikely to have the appetite to eat that much – but you do you!

The Filet De Tonyina ($24) is a yellowfin tuna with a herbed breadcrumb crust served with mix greens.

This next one is perhaps our favourite on their menu. The Fideuà De Marisc ($22) is a squid ink paella pasta cooked in a seafood broth with prawns and aioli.

Their new raciones are made for sharing, but will you want to after looking at those images?

What’s a good meal without desserts? The Churro Con Chocolat ($8) comes with 2 perfectly fried churros rolled in cinnamon sugar served with a dark chocolate dip.

Complete your meal with their mocktails such as the Startled ($9) which is an interesting concoction of cinnamon, egg white, kaya, lemon, milk.

If Spanish cuisine is your thing, this place is the ideal place for those sit down, chit chat sessions with your makan kakis. Great ambience, amazing food at affordable prices, what more can you ask for?

Singapore’s First Vegan Ice Cream Joint Takes The ‘Guilty’ Away From Pleasure

If you’re like me and you ate your entire body weight in steamboat and treats over the Chinese New Year break, it’s time to get back in shape!

But who says you can’t enjoy a little sweat treat every now and then.

Over at Brownice, they serve up one of the best vegan ice creams in Singapore and best part, it’s completely guilt-free!

You Can Have Your Ice Cream And Eat It Too

Being vegan or lactose-intolerant, you probably know how frustrating it is to be restricted from ice creams.

Fret not, Brownice serves vegan-friendly ice cream that uses brown rice as a substitute. Yes, you read that right. No dairy or eggs in this one!

If you’re expecting a rich gelato texture, unfortunately Brownice’s ice cream is less creamy and more icy (think of a cross between sorbet and ice cream).

While it is texturally lighter on the palate, it certainly does not lack flavour.

Looking for something light and refreshing for those hot sunny days? Their fruit based flavours such as the Sunny Strawberry Fields (from $3.50 per scoop) will be the choice to go for.

For creamier flavours, you should definitely try out their Black Sesame, Gila Gula Melaka and The Perfect Matcha.

Even better, treat yourself and go for the Waffle-licious Ice Cream ($8 with a scoop of ice cream).

Brownice prides in the fact that their ice cream contains less than 3% fat and boasts a calorie count of 80-140kcal per scoop. How’s that for your waistline?

Their outlet at East Coast Road serves a variety of Italian fare as well. Brownice is here to prove that Italian food can still be enjoyed if you’re vegan.

They serve one of the best vegan friendly pizzas ($14-$19) I’ve tried to date. You can barely taste the difference from your traditional Italian pizza.

The pastas ($10-$18) have great flavours too although most are tomato-based. Their Lasagna ($17), which features layers of diced eggplants and tofu in a thick and creamy tomato ragu sauce, is a crowd favourite!

Brownice has got our stamp of approval if you’re looking at vegan-friendly options. We’re surprised this place hasn’t opened all over Singapore yet.

1. Gardens By The Bay: Spring Surprise 2018

From 14 February 2018 to 25 February 2018, celebrate Chinese New Year with Gardens By The Bay! Spring Surprise 2018 will feature fun activities and attractions perfect for the whole family.

As part of Spring Surprise, there will be multiple events held from 14 to 25 February 2018.

On 14 February, bring your loved ones to the SuperTree Grove where the Singapore Chinese Orchestra will be performing romantic tunes as part of the “Music Oasis: Spring Romance at the Gardens” concert.

For one night only on 17 February, there will be dance performances at the SuperTree Grove – from the impressive Lion Dance performance, to belly dancers and intriguing contortionists. Keep a look out for the roving stilt-walkers for a wonderful photo opportunity!

The guided walks start at 10am all the way to 4pm and will be conducted hourly. There will be signs on the Istana grounds indicating where you can register for the guided walks.

The guided walks will be $2 for each child aged 3 and above, $4 for PRs and Singaporeans above 13, and $10 for each foreigner aged 13 and above.

The Chingay Parade is back from 23 to 24 February 2018!

Ever since Mr Softee decided to mysteriously disappear from Singapore, there has been a void in our bellies, where soft serves used to be. Sure, Mcdonald’s ice creams were a substitute for a while but we’re craving for more exciting flavours.

Meet Moosh Softserve.

Recently opened at Haji Lane, this Muslim-owned, Halal soft serve ice cream shop has been making waves.

A local favourite and definite must-try is their Ondeh Ondeh Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large), a concoction that uses Gula Melaka soft serve ice cream topped with desiccated coconut, toasted coconut flakes, and drizzled with pandan fudge sauce.

The soft serve might get a little jelak halfway through, just mix the pandan fudge well and it’ll be fine.

Other interesting flavours include the Nutella Brownies Cheesecake Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large) and the Apple Crumble Softserve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large).

Don’t say we bojio, but this soft serve is legit.

The “Rasa Sayang” ($14) is a blend of rose infused water mixed with strawberry, mint leaves and more! Just like the folk song itself, this drink captures much of the Malay character.

Gina Yashere is coming to Singapore on 3 February 2018, for a one night only live comedy performance at the Esplanade!

For those who are unfamiliar with the brilliant work of Gina Yashere, she is a stand-up comedian and TV star in the UK who has had appearances on iconic TV shows such as Mock The Week and Live At The Apollo. You might have also seen her recently on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, as a correspondent.

2. NParks Concert Series In The Park: Rockestra

The first NParks Concert for 2018 will be held on 3 February 2018 at the Fort Canning Park.

Concert-goers can expect retro hits from the ’60s to the ’90s, performed by local musicians such as Jack & Rai, JAWN X M1LDL1FE, Shagies, Umar X Dru Chen, O.K Ready, and ShiLi & Adi.

5. River Hongbao 2018

Usher in the Year of the Dog with the River Hongbao 2018 from 14 February to 24 February 2018!

The River Hongbao is an annual Chinese New Year event held at The Float@Marina Bay and is the biggest Chinese New Year event in Singapore.

Visitors can expect bright and colourful lantern and light displays, impressive firework displays every night, dance and musical performances, an exhibition on the history and tradition of Chinese New Year, street food stalls, and over 30 amusement rides for the whole family!

You can even try your hand at calligraphy, paper-cutting, stamping, and many other traditional handicrafts!

The cafe will be completely redecorated with the Care Bears. While it doesn’t exactly resemble Care-a-lot, this will do.

As with all past iterations of character cafes, what everyone is looking forward to is the themed food, and the Care Bears don’t intend to lose out to the Sanrio characters.

For the pasta lovers, there’s the Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90) which is a classic Pomodoro spaghetti with shitake mushrooms, cherry tomato confit, and parmesan cheese.

If you’re looking for something more substantial, there’s the Cheer-Up Chicken Katsu ($21.90).

Were you expecting a chicken cutlet? Because we were. But it’s actually a burger!

A juicy Japanese katsu chicken slathered generously with teriyaki sauce is sandwiched between soft burger buns, topped with a sunny-side up and cheddar cheese, served with a garden salad, crisp fries and mushroom soup.

Every past character cafe has had their own version of Kumoya’s desserts and drinks and this is no exception.

7. Summer Hill

Summer Hill is the newest restaurant to pop up in Sunset Way, serving up affordable French cuisine without GST and service charge.

This cosy bistro serves up simple French fare that is oh-so-simple, yet oh-so-good. Dishes on their Special board as well as sides are rotated weekly so your meal there is always different and exciting.

Must-tries include their Poulet Roti ($23 for half, $45 for whole), the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar ($25), Croque Monsieur ($17.50), and the Orange & Rosemary-Scented Olive Oil Cake With Cream ($3).

The Poulet Roti uses hormone and antibiotic-free chicken that has been marinated with herb butter before it’s roasted to perfection. The result is roast chicken that is juicy yet still retains its skin’s crispiness.

If you’re not a fan of chicken, then the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar is the main dish for you. Tangy, tender, and satisfying. The mustard and sage sauce provides a contrast of flavours, cutting through the heaviness of the tender pork so that you won’t feel jelak.

The Croque Monsieur is basically a levelled-up ham and cheese sandwich. Ham, Swiss cheese, bechamel sauce, and dijon mustard sandwiched between 2 thick slices of grilled sourdough bread.

Hidden away in the suburbs of Jurong West, is OH MY MANGO dessert bar.

This unassuming dessert bar serves up various mango-flavoured food, and one of those is a mean Mango Shibuya Toast ($10.90).

Soft and fluffy on the inside, while toasted and crispy on the outside, the shibuya toast is topped with mango ice cream, diced mango, almond flakes, drizzled generously with mango sauce, and served with a dollop of whipped cream.

This is basically a mango overload but not in a bad way. If you’re a big fan of mango, you have to try this.

This tri-coloured creation might seem like a weird flavour combination, but the slight bitterness of matcha cuts through the sweetness and sometimes too jelak taste of the mango and milk, resulting in a rather interesting flavour.

1. Art From The Streets

From 13 January 2018 to 3 June 2018, the world’s most iconic street artists will be showcasing their most provocative works for the first time in Singapore.

Titled Art from the Streets, this ground-breaking exhibition will trace the 40 years of street art, from its beginnings to the urban art form that it is today.

The exhibition will feature a series of live paintings that are created on-site by some of the most iconic street artists as well as new and upcoming names such as Spain’s Felipe Pantone, Singapore’s Speak Cryptic and Yok & Sheryo.

The new artworks are specially created for the exhibition, to showcase the diversity of the street art movement and how it is relevant to society in present times.

That’s not all, there will also be large-scale mural paintings, videos, prints, installations, archival material, drawings, and sketches from 50 of the biggest names in street art.

The ArtScience Museum will also be shining a spotlight on artworks from upcoming SouthEast Asian street artists.

3. Light To Night Festival 2018

The Light To Night Festival is back from 19 to 28 January 2018, once again painting the Civic District in a shower of stunningly vibrant light displays, installations, and creative works of art.

As one of the marquee events of Singapore Art Week, the festival is set to expand from an anniversary celebration by the National Gallery Singapore, to a district-wide arts festival, in collaboration with The Art House, Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, Asian Civilisations Museum, and The Esplanade.

The theme for this year is “Colour Sensations”. Visitors will be taken on a captivating multi-sensory experience, from the stunning kaleidoscope of public art and installations from local artists to interactive light projections and immersive colourscapes.

There will also be a Festival Food Street at the Padang. So gather your friends and family and head down to the Light To Night festival for a night of artsy fun!

8. Pizza Maru

Can’t decide between pizza and Korean food for dinner? How about both?

Pizza Maru is the latest franchise to hit our shores, serving up Chicago-style deep dish pizzas with a Korean twist. That’s right, we’re talking about deep dish pizzas with Korean flavours.

Known for their patented pizza dough made with green tea, chlorella and 12 kinds of cereals, this hefty pizza dough is made to support a multitude of ingredients in their deep dish pizzas.

One of the pizzas to look out for is the Real BBQ Chicago ($26.80) which comes stuffed with double mozzarella cheese, cream cheese mousse, string cheese, roasted onion, tomatoes, potatoes, chicken chunks, mushrooms, BBQ sauce, honey, almonds and icing sugar.

Sounds like a weird combination but it makes sense given the Korean influence on the dish.

Another must-try is the Mango Ocean ($19.80/regular, $23.80/large) which is a seafood pizza with shrimps, squid, scallops, mushrooms, broccoli, onions, black olives, mango, pilaf sauce, mozzarella sauce, spicy buldak sauce, and sweet potato-stuffed crust.

A great side dish to order is the SPAM Tower ($12.80). Layers of chicken SPAM, bell peppers, fried kimchi, cabbage, mushrooms, onions, seaweed, and a fried egg sitting on a bed of rice and garnished with potato crisps, parmesan cheese and sriracha sauce.

9. Mak Hong Kee HK Kitchen

Newly opened along Keong Saik Road is Mak Hong Kee HK Kitchen, serving up classic Hong Kong fare that you normally find in a high end Chinese restaurant, albeit at a more reasonable price.

A must-try is their roasted meats. Mak Hong Kee HK Kitchen serves up roast pork which is slightly fattier with a thin crisp layer of crackling that is oh-so-satisfying.

Another roast meat to look out for is the BBQ Pork with Honey sauce, better known as Char Siew. The char siew served here is tender and not as sweet.

If you need your carbs, then we suggest getting the Beef Hor Fun ($10). The hor fun (rice noodles) used in the dish is narrower, and is stir fried with bell peppers and tender beef slices in a rich black bean sauce. This is a dish that you must order.

10. SayChiizu Singapore

Singapore has seen its fair share of cheese-flavoured food. Four cheese pizzas, grilled cheese sandwiches, cheese sundaes, cheesecakes, cheese cookies, and even cheese foam bubble teas.

This time round, SayChiizu, a popular Hokkaido Grilled Cheese Toast brand from Bangkok is opening its first store in Singapore at VivoCity on 15 January 2018.

SayChiizu will be serving up their signature grilled cheese toasts in several flavours such as Charcoal, Chocolate, Strawberry Cheese and Matcha Cheese.
