Five Reasons Why You Should Try Parkour At Least Once In Your Life
From scaling walls to jumping from rooftop to rooftop, the action movie junkie in us has always admired the stunts performed by the spies/secret agents. But as someone who feels a sense of achievement from just walking on the balancing beam at the fitness corner downstairs without falling, we sort of put our dreams of joining the spy-hood behind. That was until we were given the chance to attend a Parkour class.
Our ambassadors, Chelsea and Cheryl, attended the class too. Here’s a video of their experience:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BN4Ih55DygN/?taken-by=cherzinga
A French invented sport that focuses on overcoming obstacles in urban environments through running, jumping or climbing, Parkour is definitely not for the non-nimble. It’s sort of like a mandatory sport for spies in training.
[caption id="attachment_20165" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Tan Chi Ying, one of Singapore’s Parkour pioneers and founder of A2 Movements[/caption]As we stood in the company of Tan Chi Ying, one of the pioneers of Singapore Parkour scene and founder of The Free Runner Lodge, an indoor Parkour facility, resembles a playground without stairs (who needs them when you can swing/climb/flip your way around, right?). Established in 2010, A2 Movements is Singapore’s first Parkour academy.
[caption id="attachment_20166" align="alignnone" width="1000"] The Free Runner Lodge – An indoor Parkour facility by A2 Movments[/caption]After a couple of stretches, we stood face-to-face with a wooden block that was half our height.
Our mission was to place both our hands on the block’s surface before swinging our legs over and bringing our whole body over the obstacle. Sounds pretty doable, right? Wrong.
After multiple bruises the size of eggs on our legs, we’ve got to say, it definitely is not as easy as action movie stars make it out to be. It’s been a long introduction, so here are five reasons why Parkour will keep us coming back for more (bruises).
1. It’s A Great Workout
Never, ever underestimate the power of Parkour to work your muscles.
After an embarrassing half hour trying Parkour and using muscles we didn’t know existed, we were exhausted.
[caption id="attachment_20168" align="alignnone" width="1616"] Students in training[/caption]So if you’re starved for time or are just looking to try a new workout, try Parkour.
2. It Pushes You Out Of Your Comfort Zone
As the Parkour session progressed, we found ourselves pushing our boundaries and achieving something we never thought was possible.
[caption id="attachment_20199" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Parkour puts your body to the test[/caption]Most of us are right-handers, and we’re never good at using the left hand for anything. After some practice (and persuasion), not only did we manage to use our left hands to support our body weight, we were surprisingly comfortable with it.
3. It’s Really, Really Fun
It’s one thing to watch your favorite actors (or stuntmen) perform the stunts, and another to actually sort of perform them. Not only is it enjoyable, but the sense of achievement upon completion is also really high. Imagine doing this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R51FaRPCio0
Of course, tons of practice is needed, but how fun did that look? Super.
4. It’s a Solo Sport
Much like hitting the gym, Parkour focuses on you and you only. When we first stepped into class, we were surrounded by existing students who were too busy practicing their mid-air flips to notice our building nervousness. Die, sure kenna judge.
[caption id="attachment_20200" align="aligncenter" width="960"] No one’s judging here[/caption]But as the session progressed, it hit us that firstly, everyone is here to learn. Secondly, everyone else is too busy perfecting their own moves to bother about you.
5. It Keeps One Unbelievably Young
Despite Chi Ying’s jaw-dropping consecutive midair somersaults, what really made our jaws drop was his age.
[caption id="attachment_20169" align="alignnone" width="1367"] How many of us can soar through the air like this after we hit the big three O?[/caption]When asked for his secret to looking almost ten years younger than his actual age, Parkour was the answer. For those who are wondering, Chi Ying is 30 years old.
It may require a lot of practice, but Parkour has got to be one of the most satisfying sports around.
For those who are interested, the good news is that A2 Movements holds classes every day of the week and has various time slots for you to choose from! If you’re undecided about a long-time commitment ($200 for unlimited sessions a month), fear not – A2 Movements offers a one off-session ($25). As for the ladies, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a time slot reserved just for you.
Personal trainings aside, A2 Movements also conducts workshops and events, so if you’re looking for a unique corporate bonding experience, free to check Now, here’s your chance to win a Parkour session for two!
Head on down to our Facebook page for the details. This giveaway ends on 28 December, and the lucky winner will be notified through Facebook. A2 Movements

Cirque Adrenaline’s Death-Defying Acrobatic Acts Had Us Gasping “Oh My God” At Every Turn
Looking for an event to head to that will have you at the edge of your seat? Look no further because Cirque Adrenaline has arrived in Singapore and it’s got the crowd spell-bounded. From the producers behind acclaimed shows The Illusionists and Le Noir, Cirque Adrenaline showcases some of the most daring and death-defying acrobatic acts!
Cirque Adrenaline
[caption id="attachment_20068" align="alignnone" width="683"] Rolla Bolla[/caption]Cirque Adrenaline’s troupe of over 30 performers is renowned for its theatrical flair and jaw-dropping acrobatic displays. We headed down to Cirque Adrenaline and we must admit, we were spellbound by the displays of strength, agility and sheer bravery.
Wheel Of Death
[caption id="attachment_20066" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Wheel Of Death[/caption]The piece de resistance of Cirque Adrenaline had to be Wheel of Death, with two agile trapeze artists perched precariously on a structure hanging above the audience the Wheel Of Death had even us gasping with shock. By far our favourite act of the entire show, the Wheel of Death pushes the boundaries of high-risk stunts.
[caption id="attachment_20074" align="alignnone" width="680"] Duo Strap[/caption]If you’re a fan of Cirque De Soleil, the Duo Strap might just be your favourite aeriel act. It was amazing how flexible and agile the performers were. Watching them move so gracefully and in tandem with such careful precision, made us mere mortals feel slightly more than clumsy!
Sphere of Fear
[caption id="attachment_20073" align="alignnone" width="1020"] Sphere of Fear[/caption]Another Cirque Adrenaline act that will make it worth every cent spent is the Sphere of Fear. Once an act that was often witnessed at carnivals. This particular act sees a motorcyclists make 360 turns within a metal sphere. The feat is difficult and dangerous enough, but Cirque Adrenaline sets a whole standard for this high-risk stunt. With 3 motorcyclist making synchronised stunts missing each other by split seconds the Sphere of Fear was certainly a heart-pounding act worth catching.
[caption id="attachment_20071" align="alignnone" width="641"] Fire Act[/caption]The Fire Act not only caught our attention, it also made us realise the sheer bravery, time and effort that goes behind every act during Cirque Adrenaline. The Fire Act saw fire-breathers twirling multiple rods of flames. If we doubted the authenticity of the flames, we were proven wrong when the smell of ash and flames filled the theatre.
Our ambassador Stephanie Ler headed down to Marina Bay Sands Mastercard Theatres to catch Cirque Adrenaline. This is what she had to say about the amazing acrobatic death-defying acts:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BOKAGonAT55/?taken-by=piinkmasquerade
[caption id="attachment_20067" align="alignnone" width="602"] Cirque Adrenaline Acrobats[/caption]So if you’re keen to catch acrobatic acts that will push the boundaries of gravity (plus it’s fun for the whole family), head on down to Marina Bay Sands and catch Cirque Adrenaline! Not only will it keep you at the edge of your seat you’ll be amazed at the sheer grit and agility of the acrobatic performers.

‘Om is where the heART is’ Re-Invents Yoga With A Charitable Twist
Let’s be honest, with our busy schedules it can be pretty difficult to squeeze in some exercise. After a long day at work, most of us are just too exhausted to head to the gym. Unless you’re really disciplined or you’re a gym junkie, exercise is unlikely to be a top priority.
Good news for those of you who have been trying to get off your couch, ‘Om is where the heART is‘ is the perfect excuse to grab a friend and get your body moving!
Jointly organised by Community Chest and SOULSCAPE, ‘Om is where the heART is’ is a fundraising yoga event that gets participants moving while also giving you the chance to pay-it-forward.

8 Singaporean Millennials Share With Us Messages They Wish They Could Tell Their Loved Ones
We Singaporeans are not an emotionless bunch (in spite of some polls saying otherwise). Yes, while we may not express our feelings openly, we Singaporeans actually do feel quite deeply.
We wanted to debunk the myth, so we had 8 millennials share with us their messages of love for the people who mean the most to them.
Messages that they wished to say, but could never pluck up the courage to.
1. ‘I am really grateful that she still loves me even though I may not have been the best brother in the world’
[caption id="attachment_19595" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Siblings[/caption]I’m closest to my younger sister. Despite the 8 year age gap, we share a lot of common interests like basketball. Even though we don’t talk as much due to our life stages, she still comes to my room to “disturb” me once in awhile.
My favourite memory of my sister was when I was still a trainee in NS. It was my birthday and she sent a photo collage of my baby pictures with the words “Happy Birthday” through text. She was in primary school back then and even though the compilation wasn’t the most aesthetically-pleaseing, it was the effort and the act of thinking about me that made me feel grateful.
I would love to tell her how much I really appreciate her. I am really grateful that she still loves me even though I may not have been the best brother in the world.

2. ‘It was the last time we were together while he was still alive.’
[caption id="attachment_19597" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Family[/caption]I’m an only child so I’ve always been close to my parents. We have different dynamics between us all, but I love them in their own special way.
When I had my bad breakup, they were there for me like silent pillars of support, and had their own way of showing that they cared.
My mum is the chatty type, so she talked to me and made sure I was ok at all times. My dad doesn’t speak as much, but he gave me the peace that I wanted, and kept everything to a status quo so I’ll get out of the rut faster.
I would like them to know that I love them very much, and that I will miss them terribly if they’re gone.
They taught me what love means, and have provided for me so selflessly through the years.

5. ‘He is my role model and when I see a man, I hope he is at least 50% of what my brother is’
[caption id="attachment_19601" align="alignnone" width="736"] Brother & Sister[/caption]I’ve grown up in a very close-knit family, but I’m closest to my brother. We don’t get to spend much time together because we’re both busy working but we love catching up in front of the TV. Something I really admire about him is his confidence and his sincerity for those he loves!
He’s my role model and when I see a man, I hope he is at least 50% of what my brother is, because I doubt I can find someone exactly like him!
– Maria (22)
6. ‘Thank you for being there for me when I had nowhere to go’
[caption id="attachment_19600" align="alignnone" width="650"] pbenjay.blogspot.com[/caption]I’m the closest to my brother, he’s always motivating me to do better.
When I do silly things, like fighting with my parents, he makes me see where I’m wrong. But he also supports me when I’m right.
I really admire his success and hard work. He did a full time job while working on his new business. He’s an entrepreneur and financial assistant now.
Thanks for being a great older brother. I couldn’t have asked for a better one.
Thanks for all your pep talks. I may not say it but they’ve helped me see things clearer.

8. ‘ Mum thank you for being the best mum ever.’
