Keep Calm And Curry On With This New Japanese Restaurant That Serves Hokkaido WHITE Curry
If the only curries you’ve tried to date only vary in shades of brown, it’s time to spice things up (pun intended).
Aside from soup curry – a kind of soup-curry hybrid – there is also the unique white curry served at Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry!
[caption id="attachment_27844" align="aligncenter" width="1365"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]Tengawa is the newest Japanese enclave to join the line of Japanese restaurants on the second floor of Millenia Walk. Their signature dish is – you guessed it – white curry straight from Hokkaido!
This is the FIRST ever Japanese white curry restaurant in Singapore.
Hokkaido White Curry
Tengawa prides itself in being the first restaurant in Singapore to specialise in Japanese white curry.
Its creamy stew is made from pure and fresh Hokkaido milk.
Wondering what gives this curry its white texture? It’s actually the absence of tumeric, the spice that gives the curries we know and love its usual yellow-brown colour.
[caption id="attachment_27842" align="aligncenter" width="1365"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]On Tengawa’s menu, you’ll find three set dishes.
Firstly, there’s the bestseller – the Crunchy Chicken Katsu White Curry Set ($15.80).
[caption id="attachment_27845" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]The breading is light, crisp and fragrant, while the chicken within is moist and tender.
Next, there’s the Premium Ebi Fry White Curry Set ($16.80).
[caption id="attachment_27843" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]Covered with the same breading as the chicken, opt for this for that light prawn flavour! The prawns are pretty large too, so you don’t have to worry about going hungry!
Lastly, there’s the Juicy Japanese Style Hamburg White Curry Set ($15.80).
[caption id="attachment_27840" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]Its juicy and tender pork patty is nicely battered and well worth a try too!
Each of these sets come with a homely bowl of miso soup and chawanmushi, so you get even more of a mix of flavours and textures in your meal!
What’s On The Side
With just three dishes on the menu, you can be sure that each plate of creamy, curry goodness is made to perfection!
The chawanmushi is smooth and silky, with a lingering truffle taste.
[caption id="attachment_27839" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Image Credit: Tengawa[/caption]The fragrant short grain rice is cooked in small batches too, which means you always get them fresh from the cooker.
For extra authenticity, even the garnishes of yellow petals and perilla leaf are brought in from Japan!
A complete meal with a delicious, unique curry, it’s definite worth checking out the next time you’re not sure what to have for lunch!

Soup Curry Is A Thing, And You Can Now Get A Taste Of This Hokkaido Specialty In S’pore
What comes to mind when you think of curry? Spicy, thick gravy with either turmeric or coconut milk?
Be prepared to have your expectations thrown out the window at Sama Curry & Café. Originating from Sapporo, Hokkaido, they are the first Japanese soup curry restaurant here in Singapore.
[caption id="attachment_27209" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] A simple, yet flavourfully complex menu[/caption]I have to admit, while the cafe was adorable with its grumpy bear silhouette on the walls and on the menu, I was initially a little underwhelmed by the selection on the menu. With only 8 menu items, 2 of which were simply variations of the other items, it felt strange being so quickly certain of what I wanted to eat.
I ordered the Oink2 Hamburg ($16.90), Japanese Base, at spiciness level 10. I expected a simple thick curry gravy poured over a bed of warm rice and steamed veggies–after all, that’s what Japanese curries typically look like right?
Our 2 DiscoverSG ambassadors, Nicholas and Vanessa, ordered the Hungry Bear ($18.90) with Pork Belly, with a Shrimp Base, spiciness level 10, and a Cheesy Bear ($16.90) with a Coconut Base, spiciness level 13 respectively. We also decided to get the Hokkaido Imomochi Cheese ($6.50/2 pieces) and Hokkaido Crab Cream Croquette ($6.50/2 pieces) as sides.
To say we were surprised was an understatement. Receiving our curries in a bowl of what seemed like soup left us speechless for a couple of seconds. Couple that with the amazing smells wafting up in roiling steam, we couldn’t wait to dig into the unusual dish.
[caption id="attachment_27201" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] The Oink2 Hamburg in a Japanese Base curry[/caption]My dish came with a thick hamburg patty, surrounded by a bed of vibrant, assorted vegetables and half an Ajitsuke Tamago (Japanese marinated soft boiled egg).
At level 10 (out of 30) of spiciness, I was greeted with a gentle, warming heat from the light curry. While I thoroughly enjoyed the juicy beef patty, what intrigued me most were the vegetables. After a quick chat with the chef, we found out that the vegetables (potatoes, green peppers, baby corn, carrot and broccoli) were first pre-fried for around 10 seconds, before being assembled in the dish.
The pre-frying was clear from the crispy potatoes which only required the slightest pressure to achieve a satisfying popping of its crunchy skin, revealing a melt-in-your-mouth tender potato.
As for the curry broth… I still can’t figure out the components of its complex herb and spice mix. It was a special, secret recipe, which was probably why the chef wasn’t too keen to share what the particular herb dancing on my palate was. My guess is basil, but I could be wrong.
[caption id="attachment_27202" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Hungry Bear with Pork Belly in a Shrimp Base[/caption]Flavours of shellfish burst forth from this curry, making one suspect that tons of shellfish, ranging from shrimp to clams, have been boiling for hours in this shrimp base to infuse it with such intense seafood flavours. You may think pork belly is a weird topping for a shrimp base curry, but the two actually paired nicely. Definitely a dish you’ll have to try for yourself to understand.
[caption id="attachment_27199" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Cheesy Bear in a Coconut Base[/caption]We also got to try the coconut base curry, which was both unique and familiar in flavour at the same time. The milky coconut essence floods your mouth without overwhelming the flavours of sweet cabbage, carrots and fragrant, crispy chicken katsu. The cheese was a nice touch, accenting the dish without distracting from the other components of the dish.
[caption id="attachment_27200" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Hokkaido Crab Cream Croquette (centre), Hokkaido Imomochi Cheese (lower right)[/caption]Our attentive waiter recommended the house’s special side: the Hokkaido Crab Cream Croquette.
Covered in the classic Japanese tempura breading, the croquette was stuffed with the creamiest crab mash ever. When topped with the savoury, slightly acidic dipping sauce (my guess is it’s Yakitori): Heaven.
[caption id="attachment_27207" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Hokkaido Imomochi Cheese[/caption]I saved the best appetiser for the last: the Hokkaido Imomochi Cheese.
A thin, crispy breading reminiscent of fried ice cream, your teeth will sink into a layer of chewy mochi before hitting the jackpot of melted, oozing cheese. Coupled with a sweet teriyaki dipping sauce that enhances the delicate, dripping cheese, it’s safe to say that Sama Curry & Café has perfected their dishes.
With every dish packing a punch of flavour, scoring 10/10 on presentation, and breaking our expectations by surprising our palates, Sama Curry & Café is THE place to go to for a comforting and delicious workday lunch.

Salmon lovers, you’ll want to read this.
Newly opened Salmon Samurai is set to serve Singaporean’s favourite raw fish in all its delicious forms! There’s maki, sashimi, donburi, udon… the list goes on.
But let’s start from the beginning.
[caption id="attachment_26621" align="aligncenter" width="1188"] Image Credit: Justin Teo[/caption]Matches Made In Salmon Heaven
On the menu are pre-determined salmon bowls, with salmon prepared in different ways paired with the base they go best with.
On the lighter side is the Salmon Poke with House Salad ($9.90), served with tart Wafu dressing that accents the umami flavour of the marinade perfectly.
[caption id="attachment_26617" align="aligncenter" width="1500"] Image Credit: Salmon Samurai[/caption]You can swap out the salmon poke and get a Spicy Salmon with House Salad ($9.90), where the salmon is coated with a creamy and slightly spicy sauce for some added heat to the usual sesame salad dressing.
The Salmon Sashimi with Brown Rice ($9.90), blended with refreshing ume-yuzu Furikake, offers a surprising burst of savoury and sour flavours in each spoonful.
[caption id="attachment_26620" align="aligncenter" width="3648"] Image credit: Salmon Samurai[/caption]If you’re in the mood for something less raw, The Garlic Shoyu Salmon with Udon ($9.90) is perfect.
The braised salmon is tender, yet rich with flavour. Burst open the onsen tamago that comes with it; the yolk coats the dish for an extra boost of flavour.
Did we also mention the yummy add-ons as the cherry on top of your dish? Choose from half an avocado ($1.50), Onsen Egg ($1.50) and Ebiko ($1.00).
[caption id="attachment_26618" align="aligncenter" width="1500"] Image Credit: Salmon Samurai[/caption]Build Your Own Salmon
Alternatively, don’t choose from any of the above options. At Salmon Samurai, you get to build your own salmon, i.e. customise your own bowl.
Just pick from its 5 not-so-basic Donburis–Salmon Sashimi, Salmon Mentaiko, Garlic Shoyu Salmon, Salmon Poke and Spicy Salmon–and pair it with a base of your choice, be it mixed grain rice, salad or udon.
And the best part of all of this? It only costs a very affordable $9.90 to put together the salmon don of your dreams.
[caption id="attachment_26619" align="aligncenter" width="5472"] Image Credit: Salmon Samurai[/caption]Also, don’t miss their Warrior Maki ($9.90), the perfect side to your bowl.
All the salmon is delivered fresh daily and is only sliced upon ordering to guarantee freshness and quality. Sauces are made in-house, with the wasabi freshly grated for good measure.
If salmon dishes are your go-to at Japanese eateries, check out this salmon specialist for a tasty, affordable and completely fuss-free lunch!

Japan’s Largest Fugu Restaurant Chain Is Here In Singapore, And It Will ‘Blow’ Your Mind
Be prepared to be blown away by this ultimate fugu experience.
Guenpin Fugu, Japan’s largest fugu restaurant chain, has set up shop in Singapore! It boasts a whopping 96 outlets in Japan, and has just settled here in a cozy 32-seater establishment.
The secret to its success? The most exciting dish on the menu–its signature Tiger Puffer Fish.
[caption id="attachment_26645" align="aligncenter" width="1378"] Image Credit: Guenpin Fugu[/caption]Tempting Torafugu
Not all fugu are created equal.
“Torafugu”, or Tiger Puffer Fish, is recognized as the most premium grade of puffer fish available on the market.
Rich in collagen and protein, torafugu has less calories and fat than normal puffers, making it the luxury go-to fish for health and beauty.
[caption id="attachment_26648" align="aligncenter" width="3448"] Image Credit: Alainlicious[/caption]You can choose to have this rare fish in all its delicious forms.
There’s the thin sliced puffer fish sashimi “Tessa” ($28), puffer fish hot pot “Tecchiri” ($55), BBQ puffer fish meat ($48), puffer fish sushi ($18/3 pc, $28/5 pc), and deep fried puffer fish meat ($35).
Each dish is prepared by hand, and with the 30 years of skill and expertise of Genpin Fugu’s licensed artisan cooks.
[caption id="attachment_26646" align="aligncenter" width="1094"] Image Credit: Guenpin Fugu[/caption]Guenpin’s torafugu is flown in from Shimonoseki, Japan’s puffer fish capital for safe and quality fugu.
If you’ve never tried torafugu before, expect a clear, translucent meat with a crisp, firm texture, and subtle flavour.
Snow Crab & Sake
For the less courageous, Guenpin’s snow crab is a great alternative.
Just like the fugu, it’s prepared in a variety of ways like sliced sashimi, sushi, grilled, hotpot or cooked with porridge.
[caption id="attachment_26644" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Guenpin Fugu[/caption]No Japanese meal is complete without sake!
While classic picks are always on the menu, the more adventurous can go for the more obscure ones. Think fin sake ($25), or tsugi sake ($15)–a cup of heated sake with grilled fish fins.
[caption id="attachment_26647" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Guenpin Fugu[/caption]If you’re looking to have a taste of pufferfish, this is the fugu specialist you need to visit.

A New Café Gem Has Opened Up On Rangoon Road, And It’s Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale
Ever wish you could escape into a perfect fairy tale world?
Now, you can! Well, at least for lunch.
[caption id="attachment_26841" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]The beautiful and charming Enchanted Cafe has just opened up along Rangoon Road, for you to dine and while away your weekends in a fantasy world.
Enchanting Ambience
First things first, the aesthetic of this place is on point!
Entering into this cafe is like stepping foot into the fairy tale garden of your dreams–the only things missing are actual fairies.
Picture a wooden shelf lined with large vintage books, twigs and potted plants hanging from the ceiling, fairy lights draped down branches and across the walls, and quirky, mismatched tables and chairs filling the space.
[caption id="attachment_26680" align="aligncenter" width="1628"] Image Credit: Image Credit: The food and drinks at Enchanted Cafe are just as dreamy, both in terms of taste and presentation.Something you can’t miss is the theatrical Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90)–also the most instagram-worthy of them all.
It starts as a blue drink, set in a stone dish, surrounded by wispy smoke. Add an orange “potion”, swirl it all together, and it transforms into a deep, glittery purple.
[caption id="attachment_26678" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]Also on the menu are brunch favourites like the Big Breakkie ($17.90), as well as the Croque Madame ($14.90).
The standout item on the menu, however, would have to be a traditional favourite with a twist: The Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90).
This unique burger adds a touch of familiar Singaporean flavour to the otherwise fantasy-like setting.
Expect a tender pork patty marinated in five-spice seasoning, complete with bits of water chestnut, and black garlic sauce that’s made from scratch.
[caption id="attachment_26683" align="aligncenter" width="1188"] Image Credit: Ng Yi Yang[/caption]And don’t leave without ordering dessert!
Your best bet here is the French Vanilla Crepe Cake.
The thin pancakes are fluffy, with generous layers of light, airy cream slathered in between. Perfect after a hearty meal.

This newest addition to the themed cafe scene may be the most magical one yet.
The quirky Enchanted Cafe charms at first sight with its beautiful decor, complete with a magical garden and collection of spell books.
[caption id="attachment_26606" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe[/caption]But what’s most striking is the presentation of its dishes.
Think: Bright red cherry compote, blackberries and blueberries in a vivid splash against a deep blue plate, sprinkled with seemingly handpicked bits of nuts and leaves. That’s what makes up the tangy, yet sweet Berries Compote French Toast ($14.90).
For something traditional with a twist, there’s the Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90), which is exactly what it sounds like, complete with bits of water chestnut and black garlic sauce made from scratch.
The most instagramable thing here is the Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90), a blue drink that turns glittery purple after an orange liquid is added.
This has to be the most enchanting cafe to open since the Harry Potter Cafe.
