Taking place on December 1 on the shores of Sentosa Siloso beach, this year’s event will feature a full-fledged festival site complete with a food village, custom installations, mind-blowing stage production as well as roving acts.

Are You Ready?

Headlined by the likes of Marshmello and DJ Snake last year, the ZoukOut 2018 line-up is set to be packed with a stellar and diverse line-up of international, regional and local acts across dance music genres.

Acclaimed DJ duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike also known as DVLM, will be making their Singapore debut. This will also be their only performance in Southeast Asia this year!

Bishan’s Carnival This Weekend Offers Food, FREE Workshops, And Black Panther Screening

Craving Communities Festival

Bishan is probably one of the best neighbourhoods to live in Singapore. With 2 intersecting MRT lines that lead to town and the ulu West side of Singapore, nowhere is too far when you live in Bishan.

This weekend, Bishan will be having their own festival, complete with food, a retail market, workshops, games, live band performances, and even a movie under the stars!

Here’s what you can expect at the Craving Communities Festival!

Eat, Play, Create

Happening this weekend, 23 to 24 June 2018, the Craving Communities Festival is a short but fun-packed festival for the whole family.

What To Eat

I’m not kidding. I mean, just look at the food that’ll be available at the fair.

Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah is known for their traditional handmade authentic popiah and kueh pie tee.

[caption id="attachment_35262" align="aligncenter" width="645"]Craving Communities Festival Image Credit: Burppler Harold Koh[/caption]

If you’re not familiar, they’ve been making their famous popiah rolls for over 70 years and no one makes better popiah skin. In recognition of their rich history, they’re even included in the National Heritage Board’s historical food trail!

You might also recognise some of these vendors who were also at Artbox Singapore 2018 as well as Market On Wheels that’s ongoing at Bugis until 8 July!

That’s right, The Swag Social will also be running a booth with Carrot Cubes, serving up cheesy popcorn chicken, fries, Earl Grey Milk Tea, and traditional handmade carrot cakes with a twist!

[caption id="attachment_35263" align="aligncenter" width="768"]Craving Communities Festival Image Credit: Carrot Cubes[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35264" align="aligncenter" width="960"]Craving Communities Festival Image Credit: Carrot Cubes[/caption]

Fish Sh-nack will also be making an appearance with their very own Crispy Fish Skin snacks in 4 flavours and their Fish Sh-nack Donburi.

If you’re sweating buckets in this heat, cool down with modern “sng baos” (ice slushie packs) from Coldshave! Available in unique flavours such as Avocado, Yuzu Longan, and Watermelon Strawberry!

What To Shop

What’s a festival without a flea market?

Shop for little knick knacks from the Craft Market.

Little locally-inspired and designed bits and bobs from Handy Dandy SG (@handydandysg), handmade bath soaps from Allet Soap (@alletsoap), candles and diffusers from Sally’s Room (@sallysroom), cute art illustrations and postcard from Laugh & Belly (@laughandbelly) and more!

Old Chang Kee Set To Unveil 2 New Exclusive Curry Puff Flavours On Curry Day 2018

Unless you live under a rock, you’d know about Old Chang Kee, probably the largest supplier of curry puffs to Singaporeans.

Coming up on 27 and 28 July 2018, Old Chang Kee will be at the atrium of Velocity @ Novena Square for Curry Day 2018, as part of the Singapore Food Festival!

Try 26 Hawker Dishes For $1 Each At This Carnival In Yishun Park Hawker Centre

For the longest time, Singaporeans have complained about the increasing prices of food and housing.

But for a day in the month of June, Yishun Park Hawker Centre is taking things back to the old days, when food was still cheap, and a crisp $10 note made you seem like a rich man.

[caption id="attachment_35123" align="aligncenter" width="2588"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

What I’m saying is, on 23 June 2018, Yishun Park Hawker Centre will be having a $1 Carnival – Reunion @ YPHC to commemorate and celebrate both traditional and new hawker food.

Old And New Hawker Fare

For ONE DAY ONLY, 26 stallholders in Yishun Park Hawker Centre will be showcasing food from its traditional and young hawkers and you get to try the signature dishes from the participating stalls, for just ONE DOLLAR.

[caption id="attachment_35131" align="aligncenter" width="933"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Happening from 11am to 5pm on 23 June 2018, you get to dig into signature hawker dishes such as thosai, prata with curry and prawn noodles. Look out for JJ’s Prawn Noodles, which are known for their rich and complex broth.

[caption id="attachment_35124" align="aligncenter" width="1050"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Other dishes to look out for include the handmade fishballs from Fishball Story and the smooth Chicken Porridge from Li Fang Congee.

[caption id="attachment_35125" align="aligncenter" width="1049"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

While the traditional hawkers have stood the test of time and are exceptional at what they serve, the new hawkers (we call them hawkerpreneurs) hold their own too, serving up some pretty impressive dishes.

Once again, Ah Tan Wings leads the charge with his Har Cheong Gai (Prawn Paste Chicken).

[caption id="attachment_35126" align="aligncenter" width="1048"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Ah Lock Tofu serves up fluffy taupok skewers and Nasi Lemak Taliwang brings their addictive spicy Sino-Indo Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang to the table.

[caption id="attachment_35127" align="aligncenter" width="1050"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Haven’t seen anything you like yet? How about the Lala White Beehoon from XLX Modern Tze Char that boasts some intense umami flavours?

[caption id="attachment_35128" align="aligncenter" width="1050"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Seafood Pirates serves up a mean Prawn Omelette Rice and Midas Every Touch Is Gold spoils the market with a Midas Signature which includes baked prata, curry and roasted chicken.

[caption id="attachment_35129" align="aligncenter" width="1048"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35130" align="aligncenter" width="1050"]$1 Carnival - Reunion @ YPHC Image Credit: Yishun Park Hawker Centre[/caption]

Now that’s really making the most out of a dollar.

Flea Market

Of course, no carnival is complete without a flea market and carnival games!

There will also be a flea market for the adults, carnival games stations for the kids and the young at heart, a colouring contest, as well as an instant photobooth to capture the moment!

While the $1 Carnival runs from 11am to 5pm, the flea market will close later at 8pm.

Return Your Trays And Stand To Win Store Credits

Yishun Park Hawker Centre encourages diners to return their own tray after eating and every tray returned is a chance to win in the Tray Return Lucky Draw.

There will be a total of $1000 worth of store credits to be won in the Tray Return Lucky Draw.

For those of you living in Sembawang and Khatib, there will be complimentary shuttle bus services available to take you to Yishun Park Hawker Centre.

From 10.45am to 3pm, there will be pick-ups and drop-offs at Sembawang, Khatib and Yishun MRT station.

Are you ready for a sensational Saturday feast for $1?

Don’t forget to bring your friends and family so you get to try as many dishes as possible!

Catch The LoL Grand Finals At ASEAN’s 1st E-Sports & Music Festival This Weekend

As a millennial, there aren’t many things that surprise me or even catch my attention. But leave it to MTV to be able to find the perfect combination of activities to turn heads and grasp our attention.

From 4 to 5 August, the Singapore Indoor Stadium will host the very first ASEAN E-Sports and Music Festival, Hyperplay.

[caption id="attachment_35044" align="aligncenter" width="1900"] Image Credit: Hyperplay[/caption]

Organised by MTV and presented by the Ministry of Culture, Community, Youth (MCCY) and National Youth Council, this insane 2-day event will see youths from all 10 countries compete in a strive for glory in the first ASEAN League Of Legends competition.

That’s not all, there will also be a music festival as well as cosplay events happening!

League Of Legends Tournament

One of the biggest components that make Hyperplay is the League Of Legends tournament which sees the best teams in the region pit their skills against each other in a chaotic battle of strategic supremacy and combat skills.

[caption id="attachment_35045" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Hyperplay[/caption]

Whether it’s national, regional or international, League Of Legends E-Sports is easily the highest level of competitive play with some of the most active and competitive players and tournaments held in some of the largest stadiums around the world.

The winners of the League Of Legends tournament will receive 6 Razer Blades!

Are you ready?

MTV Spotlight

If E-Sports isn’t really your cup of tea, then how about a music festival with a lineup curated by MTV themselves?

The full lineup of artists have not been announced but here’s who we know will be performing at Hyperplay.

Headliners

CL

If you’re any KPOP fan worth your salt, then you’d have heard of the iconic 2NE1, one of the most popular and successful girl groups in South Korea. And the leader of said group is none other than CL.

Since the disbandment of 2NE1, CL has moved on to become a versatile rapper, vocalist, dancer and songwriter and has also managed to break into the US market thanks to her various collaborations with artists such as Skrillex and Diplo, to name a few.

You might have seen her perform at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony. If you missed it, watch it again below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itd9Ebx9LTw

Afgan

The first time I saw Afgan in person was back in 2015 at Youtube FanFest Singapore.

If you don’t know who he is, the stylish singer is Indonesia’s crooning heartthrob who has won awards across the region, solidifying him as a crowd favourite in Asia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RVWepy4Ay4

Slot Machine

Slot Machine is the undisputed king of Thai rock music with nearly 2 decades of experience in the music industry.

The four-man rock band is known for their stirring rock anthems and poignant narratives. They released their first English album back in 2016, further expanding their audience and fanbase.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QccKfDDij48

The Sam Willows

Singapore’s very own pop sensations, The Sam Willows, will be representing the nation at Hyperplay!

Since the formation of the group back in 2012, they have racked up over 20.2 million streams on Spotify and more than 6 million views on their Youtube channel.

The homegrown band has churned hit after hit, from “Take Heart” to “Keep Me Jealous” and “Robot”. They’ve even opened for Little Mix on their world tour stops in Manila and Singapore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgVBXDbPZqI

Nick Jonas

If you know the lyrics to “Burnin’ Up” and “Lovebug”, then you’ll be pleased to know that Nick Jonas will be performing on the MTV Spotlight stage at Hyperplay on Sunday, 5th August 2018.

The American singer-songwriter and actor, also known as one-third of the Jonas Brothers, has sold over 17 million albums worldwide and was nominated for the ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys in 2008.

Nick Jonas released his self-titled debut album in November 2014, featuring the triple-platinum and #1 U.S. radio hit, “Jealous” and the sultry chart-climbing radio single, “Chains”.

50 Cents Is All You Need To Get Yourself Some Old School Dishes At This Festival

50 Cents Fest

You know how when you’re younger and your grandparents will always tell you about the good old days, where life was tough, internet wasn’t available, but people were happy.

[caption id="attachment_35005" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]50 Cents Fest Image Credit: Pinterest[/caption]

It was a simpler time where Singaporeans didn’t have unemployment and mobile data caps to worry about. No wonder my grandparents grew up right.

On 28 and 29 July 2018, bring your ah gong and ah ma out to Chinatown for them to reminisce a little, and relive the good old days at the 50 Cents Fest 2018!

Old School Singaporean Food For Just 50 Cents

This time, the 50 Cents Fest is throwing it back even further, taking visitors back to the golden era of the 1930s, with the Chinatown Food Street undergoing an 30s makeover, selling long-lost Singaporean dishes at the price of the yesteryears.

[caption id="attachment_35006" align="aligncenter" width="3200"]50 Cents Fest Image Credit: 50 Cents Fest[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35008" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_35007" align="aligncenter" width="4928"]50 Cents Fest Image Credit: 50 Cents Fest[/caption]

Some of the dishes you can get there include Kerabu Bee Hoon (a stir fried spicy, sweet and sour bee hoon dish. Think, dry mee siam), Fish Molee (a fish curry stew), and the polarising Kopi Gu You (black coffee with butter).

The irony of having a Garfield-themed carnival and run. Gosh.

I fell in love with Garfield, reading comics about the life of the fat tabby cat while growing up. For a while the popularity of Garfield died down, but guess not!

Artbox 2018: What To Eat, Drink And Buy To Make The Most Of Your Money

It’s that time of the year again! Artbox Singapore is back for its second run, and promises to be bigger and better than before.

If you’ve been to Artbox last year, you may have left severely disappointed as the event faced an overwhelming turnout. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, it is a wildly popular market that supports local creators retailing everything from beauty, fashion, food and art.

Originating from Bangkok, Artbox Singapore recreates the vibrancy of Thai night markets, but you wouldn’t need a flight ticket this time.

So if you’ve got a bae and some friends, head down to Artbox Singapore which spans over two weekends from 25-27 May 2018 as well as 1-3 June 2018 from 3-11 pm at the Bayfront Event Space near The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

Food At Artbox Singapore 2018

If you saw the insta-worthy food pics from last year, you’ll know that food is the main highlight of the event. Dive into over 160 bustling F&B stalls each weekend for a wide variety of food to choose from.

Here’s what we got that definitely got DiscoverSG’s stamp of approval. Now, the food at Artbox is not Thai-Night-Market-Cheap but we tried out food that’s worth your money and not overly pretentious.

1. Golden Moments

I’m a huge fan of durian. I’m not being biased but this is definitely one of THE best Mao Shan Wang Ice Cream ($9.90) I’ve tried in Singapore.

Just look at it!

[caption id="attachment_34752" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The bamboo charcoal infused ice cream has a subtle hint of MSW flavour. It is bittersweet and creamy and topped with 24K gold leaves.

I expected it to be jelak after a few bites but I surprisingly managed to devour the entire durian ice cream without feeling sick or heaty. If you’re not a huge durian lover, this ice cream might just change your mind.

It was slightly pricey for what is essentially durian ice cream, but it is definitely worth trying.

This limited edition ice cream is making its first appearance at this year’s Artbox, so if you know anyone who loves durian, you HAVE to bring them here.

If the ice cream is not enough, you can also try their Durian Platter ($18.80) which consists of durian mochi, durian puffs and the ice cream.

If you’re in need of a good dessert, then Golden Moments is a must visit at this year’s Artbox.

2. Saiko

Don’t you just hate it when you buy takoyaki at a pasar malam and you can barely taste the octopus in it?

Serving up Japanese street food realness, Saiko serves takoyaki in sizeable portions with full bite-sized octopus. You can choose from 3 different fillings – octopus, chicken and braised mushrooms. You also have the option of mixing 2 different fillings in one serving.

[caption id="attachment_34760" align="aligncenter" width="4029"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

We got their Classic ($8) which comes with 6 takoyaki topped with bonito flakes, seaweed and torched Japanese mayo.

[caption id="attachment_34759" align="aligncenter" width="3807"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

This was hands down one of the best Takoyaki I’ve had in a very long time. It’s also the perfect bite-sized snack as you walk around Artbox.

3. Cha Tra Mue

When in Thailand, always get their Thai Milk Tea!

The weather was scorching hot and we were in desperate need of a good drink. We walked around and came across a stall selling the famous Cha Tra Mue brand teas.

[caption id="attachment_34761" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You no longer have to ask your friends to buy you a packet of instant Cha Tra Mue from Thailand because its readily available at most bazaars and festivals in Singapore.

We recommend getting the 1-litre Thai Milk Tea ($4) because it is an absolute life saver in Singapore’s crazy weather. 10/10 would buy again!

4. The6ixsRosti

I was surprised to find a stall specialising in rosti at Artbox. I had high hopes for this one as I saw a queue forming at The6ixsRosti.

Being the typical kiasu Singaporean that I am, I knew I had to try this rosti.

[caption id="attachment_34763" align="aligncenter" width="3589"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

We opted for the Spicy Rosti with Mozarella Cheese ($7) – perhaps one of my favourite purchases of the day.

[caption id="attachment_34762" align="aligncenter" width="3845"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

The rosti is pan fried to perfection. It’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The spicy rosti actually had quite a kick to it, so if you can handle your spice, opt for the spicy rosti.

5. Thai Foodie Palace SG

I knew I couldn’t leave Artbox without getting any Thai Desserts. Just like any other basic Singaporean, I knew I couldn’t leave without trying the Mango Sticky Rice.

The cheapest Mango Sticky Rice I could find at Artbox was from Foodie Palace SG which sold a box for $6.

[caption id="attachment_34758" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

I never thought I would ever have to pay $6 for mango sticky rice, but I can’t complain. Their mango sticky rice turned out to be pretty good. The mango was sweet and they gave us a generous portion of sticky rice as well.

[caption id="attachment_34757" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Safe to say, we wiped the entire box clean. It was the perfect ending to my food hunt at Artbox.

Cheap Cheap, Good Good

Besides the food, you can also explore more than 200 retail booths! Each weekend brings forth a different set of unique and creative lifestyle and fashion vendors from Thailand and Singapore.

6. Oasis:Skin

If you’re in need of a good skincare routine, Oasis:Skin is an all-natural skincare company that believes in delivering high quality plant-based products that can help people rebuild their skin barrier in a natural way.

[caption id="attachment_34768" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

They use 100% natural and high-quality ingredients that are carefully sourced from artisanal producers and botanical experts from all over the world.

If your skin is in need of some desperate TLC, then you should try out their face mists. They have several face mists that targets dry skin, oily skin and even sensitive skin!

[caption id="attachment_34770" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

They also sell clay masks for those “treat yo’self” kind of days. The masks are packaged in its pure clay form as it has a longer shelf life, and there is no need for any harmful chemicals to preserve it.

7. Common Touch

If you’re looking for unique and quirky pieces to place around the house, then you’ll love the ceramics by Common Touch.

[caption id="attachment_34767" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Common Touch is a Singapore-based craft unit working together to create distinctive and purely handcrafted ceramic homeware. From different types of clay and combination of stains and glazes, each piece is hand-thrown and individually crafted.

[caption id="attachment_34764" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You can also get hand-made jewellery at this store. If you know anyone who is a fan of minimal jewellery, then you should definitely check out Common Touch at Artbox!

[caption id="attachment_34766" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

You can also find plenty of stalls around Artbox selling everything from tops and pants to tote bags and leather wallets. What’s more, you can pay by DBS PayLah! at most stalls so you don’t have to worry about running out of cash after all that shopping!

This year’s Artbox definitely did not disappoint. With a variety of retail booths and F&B stalls to choose from, there’s definitely something for everyone here.

Pro-tip: Carry and umbrella and wear comfortable clothes because our weather is extremely unpredictable!
