The Workbench Bistro @ AMK: More Than Just Waffles ‘Cos Their Mains Do Not Disappoint!
The Workbench Bistro is a hip contemporary cafe nestled under a block of HBD flats in the quiet neighbourhood of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, just behind Christ the King church.
Serving up mains, a host of drinks including artisan ciders, dessert and even breakfast items, the café oozes simplicity and a homely, warm, and cosy charm.
The Workbench Bistro: Food
The café is small in size, but big on food.
The ice cream here is supplied from local brand Bing Bing while their food creations are a fusion of western and Singaporean flavours.
The Workbench Bistro takes pride in the presentation of their dishes! All are super picture worthy.
Salted egg chicken wings
The salted egg chicken wings ($12.90) was as delectable as it could get!
[caption id="attachment_16631" align="aligncenter" width="709"] Credit: cptslow yeo @burpple[/caption]They were super generous with the salted egg sauce. The sauce wasn’t overpowering, and it was just right – creamy and flavourful.
Egg lava beef burger
Next up was the egg lava beef burger ($16.90). The beef patty comes in the shape of a donut with the half boiled egg positioned inside.
The burger is then topped with crispy grilled bacon and cheese.
When you cut the burger open, the yolk flows out nicely, hence the name egg lava. There were plenty of herbs infused into the meat. If you love your meat with a herby taste, you’d love this.
All the burgers are served with freshly made brioche buns and paprika fries!
Crab meat linguine
The crab meat linguine ($15.90) was our favorite main, the dish was very refreshing. Here’s what our ambassador, Ruth, had to say!
The lumpy, jumbo crab meat was more than sufficient and the pasta itself was cooked to perfection – Al dente!
The sauce is a mixture of white wine and light tomato cream sauce. Surprisingly, it was delicate and light. We didn’t feel gelat at all! Could totally eat this forever.
We also had their signature truffle fries ($9.90), which smelled heavenly, and their iced chocolate ($5.50) and the iced green tea latte ($6.00), which were served in pretty mason jars.
The Workbench Bistro: Dessert
Finally came the behemoth that is the s’moreffles supreme ($29.90).
By the time we reached this part of the meal, we had to ask the chefs if they could just give us 2 instead of 3 waffles, which they did so with a smile.
The waffles were dark red and green. As a dish together, it certainly provided the wow factor. It looked impressive and tasted even better – the perfect guilty indulgence!
It was a tad sweet, and should definitely be shared.
Our Verdict?
The café itself was very comfortable. We were there for almost 2 hours and did not feel unwelcome at any point of time. The service was prompt and food was served at a brisk pace upon ordering.
With a cosy, rustic interior and reasonable prices (they do not add any service taxes or GST!), this café is definitely worth a visit!

Cheese Truck Coming Through! Here’s Your Chance To Savour Gourmet Cheese From A Truck!
If you think that cheese can only be eaten with crackers, think again! We were invited to a cheese appreciation session hosted by Chef Emmanuel Stroobant at St. Pierre Restaurant. Guess what they served? Cheese with mint, lemon grass salad, kiwi, and even papaya.
Curious to know how these snacks would taste? Read on to find out more as a cheese truck will be making its way around Singapore!
The tasting
We were invited to different stations where cheese canapés were being prepared. At each station, a different cheese was used.
[caption id="attachment_16634" align="aligncenter" width="577"] JanelleJaw | DSG Ambassador[/caption]You’d be surprised by the different kinds of ingredients that can pair with cheeses. There were some super unique and surprising combinations that worked well together.
Blue cheese with papaya, kiwi, and apple cider
For example, Chef Stroobant paired this blue cheese with papaya, kiwi and apple cider.
The result was a light and fresh bite – not something you would normally associate blue cheese with.
Pont-l’Évêque cheese with mint, brioche and iberico ham
Another popular french cheese, Pont-l’Évêque, was paired with mint, brioche and iberico ham.
This resulted in a very tasty, slightly salty bite.
Gouda cheese with fried lemon grass salad and carrot puree
The first live station was an asian inspired spring roll that contained fried lemon grass salad, carrot puree and Gouda.
Each bite gave a hearty burst of flavour that was well coupled with crunchiness from the nuts in the spring roll.
Morbier cheese with Vin Jaune and cherries
The Morbier was paired with Vin Jaune, cherries and presented on cherrywood.
The presentation was exquisite and the cheese helped to balance out the intense burst of alcohol.
Emmental with strawberry sorbet
Lastly, Emmental was used in a delicious strawberry sorbet dish that was hand mixed with live nitrogen oxide.
The dish was extremely light and delicious, a perfect end to the different courses.
So why the sudden interest in Cheese?
A cheese truck will be making rounds at different locations in Singapore, that’s why!
Here’s your chance to try different cheese canapés served with unexpected and unusual ingredients.
Click here for the locations of the trucks. They’ll be coming round from the 26th to the 28th of October.
You’ll get to try different types of cheese with easier recipes – so you can prepare them at home as well!
Be sure to enjoy the delectable treats prepared by Chef Stroobant!

Deepavali: 8 Ways You Didn’t Know You Could Celebrate The Festival Of Lights
Deepavali is here! Lo and behold, this Festival of Lights springs from the simple act of lighting a single oil lamp. A humble gesture that has transcended the ages and the seas, it aptly tells of the triumph of light over darkness and goodness over evil.
As part of the festivities, families light oil lamps and decorate their floors with rangoli, traditional patterns made on the floor using coloured rice or flour.
Sweets such as laddu, and savoury snacks like chakli are exchanged and shared between family and friends, who go all out in their finest garb to drink and make merry.
Hold tight, and hop on our magic carpet ride. We’ll take you through a list of places so fancy and awesome, you’ll be looking forward to Deepavali 2017!

Chocolate Pinot & Apple Miso? 5 Drinks At Operation Dagger That’ll Wow Your Taste Buds!
In the discreet corner of a street lies a small, unsigned building. After much fumbling, the heavy glass door creaks open and you make your way carefully across the unwashed floors.
Groping around in the semi-darkness, you head down a dingy staircase and a steel door emerges. Holding your breath, you push it open.
Welcome to Halloween Horror Ni- uh Operation Dagger.
[caption id="attachment_16223" align="alignnone" width="825"] Source: slomonk.com[/caption]Voted Best New Bar at last year’s Singapore Bar Awards, Operation Dagger is an elusive bar located within the basement.
This bar is in fact, so elusive there is no sign of it. Literally.
Away from the hustle and bustle of Ann Siang Hill however, Operation Dagger serves as a great watering hole for the work weary.
[caption id="attachment_16224" align="alignnone" width="630"] Co-founder Luke Whearty in actionSource: Sethlui.com[/caption]
A cocktail bar that emphasises on the experimentation of flavours and textures, the bar has taken to replacing traditional spirits with their very own concoctions.
We had the opportunity of savouring five of the bar’s signatures drinks and boy were we taken away by the experience.
1. Apple Miso
An interesting combination of rum, fermented apple, miso caramel and sesame, the Apple Miso happens to be, at the moment, the favorite drink of co-founder Luke Whearty.
[caption id="attachment_16217" align="alignnone" width="630"] Source: Operation Dagger[/caption]Garnished with a bar spoon made of distilled toasted sesame spirit and toffee crisp seasoned gomashio, this Japanese inspired drink we say, definitely isn’t for anyone who dislikes sesame.
2. The Egg
A favourite amongst the regulars, The Egg consists of cured egg yolk, vanilla and sugar that are shaken and strained into a ceramic egg cup before being placed in a jar of smoked hay and star anise.
[caption id="attachment_16221" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Source: lbb.com[/caption]The result?
A slightly intense drink with a custard-like texture that reminds us, unsurprisingly, of everyone’s favourite salted egg yolk.
3. Chocolate Pinot
If you’re a wine person, we’d recommend you to go for the Chocolate Pinot. That’s right – Chocolate. Friggin’. Wine.
[caption id="attachment_16222" align="alignnone" width="846"] Source: shutterstock[/caption]Infused with raw cacao and vanilla, this drink, for starters, smells heavenly. As both a chocolate and wine fan, we’ve got nothing to complain about.
4. Fallen Fruit
Our favourite drink of the night? The Fallen Fruit.
A mix of wine, caramel, vanilla, fresh pears and curry leaf (say whaaaat), this drink is slow cooked via a sous vide method before being filtered overnight.
[caption id="attachment_16220" align="alignnone" width="750"] Source: iwanimawocha.com[/caption]Served in an adorable pear ceramic mug and vanilla bean straw, this refreshing drink is a dream. Side note, we bit into the straw just to see what vanilla bean tastes like and no, it wasn’t pretty.
5. Hot & Cold
Last but definitely not the least, we have the Hot & Cold, a Pina Colada-ish drink that replaces rum with tequila.
[caption id="attachment_16219" align="alignnone" width="947"] Source: Operation Dagger[/caption]Topped with a layer of warm white chocolate and coconut foam, this dessert drink, we think, will be popular with the ladies. A taste of both hot and cold, this one ranks a close second on our list.
With unconventional combinations of textures and flavours, Operation Dagger definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted.
If you’re looking to broaden your drinking horizons or are looking for a fun date idea, a night at this cocktail bar will just be the thing for you.

One Kind House: The Modern Kampung That Serves Homely Food
Singapore’s kampung days might be long gone, but there’s a hole in the wall establishment in heritage-rich East Coast that is hell bent on preserving our unique culture. Enter One Kind House, a modern, 60’s inspired kampung with an eclectic touch.
They’re open for food and drinks from Tuesday to Sunday, 8am – 5pm – but One Kind House is more of a community than an eatery.
One Kind House: Decor
The house is thoughtfully littered with art in the form of paintings on the walls, down to the bathroom sink. The art is by their family member, Ng Yak Whee, who is quite a famous Singapore painter.
Greenery at One Kind House
Plants line the entrance of the house and the dining area; and an urban farm fills the backyard.
Of course, no hipster spot is complete without freshly brewed refreshments. Blue Collar Collaborative has moved into One Kind House to serve up hot and cold brew coffee and tea – think cold blue pea flower tea with lemon grass.
One Kind House: The Story
One Kind House was born out of nostalgia.
The owner’s son, Calvin Soh, explained that during kampung days, families were able to reach out to their neighbours to borrow ingredients, or invite them over for food if they had overcooked.
Kampung life was open and communal, unlike the closed-door mentality we have adopted today. Calvin and his family wanted to replicate just that.
Mommy Soh is the head chef and owner of the house.
Her plat du jour differs day by day, but one thing is consistent – she uses only the freshest, cleanest ingredients from her urban farm.
Another constant on the menu: Mommy Soh’s signature duck egg kaya toast, mostly served during breakfast. Her other farm-to-table creations include fish laksa, mee siam with prawn sambal, ulam vermicelli – just to name a handful.
She cooks some of these dishes over a traditional charcoal stove, so the flavours are top-notch!
Because the idea of One Kind House is less of a business and more of a community, all of Mommy Soh’s creations are while stocks last (if the food runs out but you ask Mommy Soh nicely for more, she would whip up something nice for you).
One Kind Family is a space for friendly neighbours and guests who are open to learning from both young and old.
The Soh family, and of course, guests from all walks of life who pop by One Kind House for meals and refreshments, have a wealth of knowledge to share. So come for the kaya, and stay for the conversations.
