We Mexican’t Believe It — Muchachos Is BACK With A New Outlet In The CBD

Mexican food is one of the few cuisines that just comprises of comfort food. It’s hard to not like Mexican food when everything that goes into it tastes amazing.

Even a bad taco is good. Depending on how sober you are, of course. Like a cold pizza slice. Sounds gross in theory, but not so bad in practice.

One of the places that serves great Mexican food in Singapore, is Muchachos.

I still remember the day I first bit into one of their burritos. It was such a carb-overload, yet at the same time, I couldn’t stop eating it.

However, all good things come to an end.

They closed their doors at Keong Saik street back in March, much to the dismay of their fans, promising that it’s just a temporary closure for a future relocation to the Central Business District.

Imagine my ecstasy when a colleague noticed that the previously deleted Muchachos Facebook page resurfaced with a new address.

That’s right, Muchachos’ new location will be at 182 Cecil Street #01-01 Frasers Tower and it’s finally open today, 26 September 2018!

Catch The LoL Grand Finals At ASEAN’s 1st E-Sports & Music Festival This Weekend

As a millennial, there aren’t many things that surprise me or even catch my attention. But leave it to MTV to be able to find the perfect combination of activities to turn heads and grasp our attention.

From 4 to 5 August, the Singapore Indoor Stadium will host the very first ASEAN E-Sports and Music Festival, Hyperplay.

Organised by MTV and presented by the Ministry of Culture, Community, Youth (MCCY) and National Youth Council, this insane 2-day event will see youths from all 10 countries compete in a strive for glory in the first ASEAN League Of Legends competition.

That’s not all, there will also be a music festival as well as cosplay events happening!

League Of Legends Tournament

One of the biggest components that make Hyperplay is the League Of Legends tournament which sees the best teams in the region pit their skills against each other in a chaotic battle of strategic supremacy and combat skills.

Whether it’s national, regional or international, League Of Legends E-Sports is easily the highest level of competitive play with some of the most active and competitive players and tournaments held in some of the largest stadiums around the world.

The winners of the League Of Legends tournament will receive 6 Razer Blades!

If you’re any KPOP fan worth your salt, then you’d have heard of the iconic 2NE1, one of the most popular and successful girl groups in South Korea. And the leader of said group is none other than CL.

Since the disbandment of 2NE1, CL has moved on to become a versatile rapper, vocalist, dancer and songwriter and has also managed to break into the US market thanks to her various collaborations with artists such as Skrillex and Diplo, to name a few.

You might have seen her perform at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony. If you missed it, watch it again below.

Afgan

The first time I saw Afgan in person was back in 2015 at Youtube FanFest Singapore.

If you don’t know who he is, the stylish singer is Indonesia’s crooning heartthrob who has won awards across the region, solidifying him as a crowd favourite in Asia.

Slot Machine

Slot Machine is the undisputed king of Thai rock music with nearly 2 decades of experience in the music industry.

The Sam Willows

Singapore’s very own pop sensations, The Sam Willows, will be representing the nation at Hyperplay!

Since the formation of the group back in 2012, they have racked up over 20.2 million streams on Spotify and more than 6 million views on their Youtube channel.

The homegrown band has churned hit after hit, from “Take Heart” to “Keep Me Jealous” and “Robot”. They’ve even opened for Little Mix on their world tour stops in Manila and Singapore.

Nick Jonas

If you know the lyrics to “Burnin’ Up” and “Lovebug”, then you’ll be pleased to know that Nick Jonas will be performing on the MTV Spotlight stage at Hyperplay on Sunday, 5th August 2018.

The American singer-songwriter and actor, also known as one-third of the Jonas Brothers, has sold over 17 million albums worldwide and was nominated for the ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys in 2008. 

Nick Jonas released his self-titled debut album in November 2014, featuring the triple-platinum and #1 U.S. radio hit, “Jealous” and the sultry chart-climbing radio single, “Chains”.

One-day passes go from $60 to $129, depending on the day you’re buying for, while Two-day passes go from $108 to $201 depending on the category.

The Avengers Have Assembled At ArtScience Museum To Celebrate 10 Years Of Marvel Studios

It seems like yesterday when we were first introduced to the cocky genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist that is Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

But it’s been a decade! Can you believe it? 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was in secondary school when the first in a long series of Marvel movies made its debut and now we’re already on the 3rd Avengers movie and Phase 3 of the MCU is almost complete.

In commemoration of this milestone, the ArtScience Museum is showcasing the past 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their upcoming exhibition, Marvel Studios: Ten Years Of Heroes.

10 Years, 20 Films, 1 Studio

Opening tomorrow, 9 June 2018 till 30 September 2018, the exhibition will be an immersive and interactive Marvel experience for all fans.

Split into 10 distinct galleries, each section focuses on a film or a specific member of the Avengers and features life-size replicas (like the one you saw at NEX before the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War), visual and multimedia displays, as well as interactive showcases.

If you’re a big fan of Iron Man, (you must be an aspiring entrepreneur) then you should check out the Iron Man gallery where 30 different Iron Man suits are on full display together with a 5-metre tall replica of said hero.

Those on the other side of the Avengers Civil War can head over to the Captain America gallery where you can view a holographic video of Captain America’s different shields. Like a catalogue.

You can also see a replica of the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier, with a screen in the background playing the scene in the first Avengers movie of it taking to the skies.

If you loved the Black Panther movie (honestly, who DIDN’T?), head over to the Black Panther gallery, step into Wakanda and explore the wonders of Shuri’s lab.

Or enter the Microverse in the next gallery and see the Ant-Man and the Wasp through a magnifying glass.

For a more interactive experience, head over to the Guardians of the Galaxy gallery and have a “dance-off” with Baby Groot or the Doctor Strange gallery (the Sanctum Sanctorum, to the few cultured ones out there) where you can attempt to “bend reality” with a little help from modern technology.

Step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and relive all the past films at this ArtScience Museum exhibition from 9 June to 30 September 2018.

Tickets for Singaporeans go for $16 per adult, $12 for senior citizens and children, and $45 for a family package of 2 adults and 2 kids.

Meet Jack.

He’s a 28 year old Spice Maker in Singapore.

Anthony the Spice Maker is a hipster looking spice shop tucked away in Ang Mo Kio’s wet market. At first glance, anyone would think it’s a fancy stall selling tea leaves or coffee beans. Take a closer look and you’ll realise that it’s a shop selling spices.

Let’s be real, most of us would look at him and think, “Sure not this Chinese boy can sell Indian spices?”

Well, you’ll be surprised. He’s a Chinese boy with an Indian soul. He knows his spices inside out. He added, “For a Chinese guy, I can handle spice pretty well.”

If you were to ask any millennials whether they cook, 70% would probably say no. Eating out everyday seems like an easier option. If you ask me to replicate my mom’s home cooked dishes, I’ll probably give up and order McDonald’s instead.

Heck, I bet half us don’t even know the names of the different spices to begin with.

So that’s where Anthony The Spice Maker comes in. He makes cooking easier for all you millennials out there who are learning how to cook.

The Spice Mecca

The store was first started by Jack’s grandfather in 1986. After completing his National Service obligations, Jack was finally hit with the realisation that he needed a job. That’s when his father, Anthony, told him to join the business. Since then, Jack has been running the Ang Mo Kio outlet while his father runs the one in Chinatown.

Naturally, a first time cook will feel intimidated stepping into this shop.

“So many spices? Where do I start?”

Jack will come to your rescue. If you’re a newcomer, he’ll take his time to explain the differences between the ready-made rempahs that are available in the fridge and the dry spice blends that are packaged nicely in those brown paper bags.

The spices that he sells are perfect for busy young couples or home cooks. If you’re working a 9 – 5 job, you know that all you want at the end of the day is a quick simple meal. He explains that if you’re someone with a busy lifestyle, he’ll recommend the ready made rempah which is crafted for time-starved customers.

He prides in the fact that he uses high grade spices to make his rempahs. No preservatives, M.S.G. and artificial additives are used in the making of his rempahs. So if you’re health conscious, this is the healthier option as compared to buying those instant rempah you can get at most supermarkets.

If you’re a slightly advanced home cook and you trust that people won’t get food poisoning from your cooking, he will recommend getting the dry spice blends which you can use to adjust to your preferences. We heard that their best selling Curry Powder Singapura has quite a bit of a kick to it!

Best part, his spices are basically dummy-proof. Each packaging comes with a label that lists the ingredients and an instruction that explains what it is used for.

While the spice blends and rempah are available online, I highly recommend going down to the outlet instead. You’ll be able to interact with him and get a better understanding of what you’re buying.

However if you are pressed for time, you can check out the available spices online. In fact, if you know anyone who’s missing home cooked flavours, they ship their spices as well.

You know how when you’re younger and your grandparents will always tell you about the good old days, where life was tough, internet wasn’t available, but people were happy.

Old School Singaporean Food For Just 50 Cents

This time, the 50 Cents Fest is throwing it back even further, taking visitors back to the golden era of the 1930s, with the Chinatown Food Street undergoing an 30s makeover, selling long-lost Singaporean dishes at the price of the yesteryears.

This is the 3rd edition of the amazing event that debuted at the Singapore Food Festival 2016. If this is your first time going to the festival, you can expect to find authentic 1930s local fare.

Some of the dishes you can get there include Kerabu Bee Hoon (a stir fried spicy, sweet and sour bee hoon dish. Think, dry mee siam), Fish Molee (a fish curry stew), and the polarising Kopi Gu You (black coffee with butter).

There will be more than 40 dishes available at the fest, with over 20 dishes priced at an unbelievable 50 cents. Food for 50 cents in this economy? Bo ko leng. But I’m telling you, it’s real.

That’s not all, there will also be entertainment acts available. Catch Taxi Girl and traditional opera performances, or walk down the streets of the 1930s with a one-of-a-kind virtual reality installation!

The Singapore Art Museum’s SAM Late Nights returns this June, July and August in conjunction with the ‘Imaginarium: Into the Space of Time’ exhibition!

The programme takes place on the second Friday of every month. The next few SAM Late Nights will be held on 8 June, 13 July and 10 August 2018.

Imaginarium: Into the Space of Time

‘Imaginarium: Into the Space of Time’ is Singapore Art Museum’s eighth edition of their annual family-friendly exhibition.

The ongoing exhibition dives in and explores the myths and theories that shape our memories as well as the relationship between time and space through immersive and interactive artworks by artists from the region and around the world.

The exhibition will be at the Singapore Art Museum from 6 May to 26 August 2018.

SAM Late Nights

From June to August, the second Friday of each month will be extra special.

SAM Late Nights offers free access to the Singapore Art Museum till 9pm, as well as free entry to their latest exhibition, ‘Imaginarium: Into the Space of Time’.

There will also be al-fresco food and drinks from 6 to 10pm. Don’t miss out on the craft beer and wine pop-up by Standing Sushi Bar.

There have been plenty of rumours surrounding the opening of this eatery and the wait is finally over. You can now enjoy Nashville style fried chicken from Chix Hot Chicken.

Can Sing, Can Dance, Can Sell Chicken

Inspired by South America’s love for fried chicken, Chix Hot Chicken specialises in Nashville Style Hot Chicken served with the world’s spiciest peppers. The chicken is served atop a slice of white bread and pickle chips.

The options come in Quarter ($9.90) with a choice of thigh and leg or breast and wing; Half ($18.90) or 3 Whole Wings ($10.90).

You can also choose your spice level – Mild Hotness, Extra Hotness or Insane Hotness.

Now here’s the fun part. If you think you can handle your spice well, try out the “Extra Hotness” level first. The chicken skin is typically rubbed with ground cayenne peppers, however, in this case – ghost peppers.

The Ghost Pepper exploded in popularity on YouTube and other social sites where pepperheads eat whole Ghost Peppers as part of a challenge. The ghost pepper is rated at more than 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs), enough to make a grown man cry.

If you’re someone who knows no fear and thinks, “Aiya, ghost pepper no kick. Give me something crazier.”

Then you’ll love the “Insane Hotness”. The chicken skin is seasoned with Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper, which typically rates at 2 million SHUs.

If you plan on trying this out, then we highly recommend taking an MC from work because God knows what’s that going to do to your intestines. If you’re feeling bored with life and you need something to spice things up, then we dare you to take up the Insane Hotness challenge.

If you’re more of a “no thanks, I’m good without spice” kind of person, you can get the The Original ($9.90, $10.90, $18.90) – buttermilk fried chicken made from a mixture of spices inspired from New Orleans. Your stomach will definitely thank you for this.

You can also enjoy their chicken in a burger form. Their Soul Sliders ($12) comes with a juicy boneless chicken served with slaw, pickles and pink mayo sandwiched between two buttered buns.

Also, if you’re looking for a Sunday brunch date, Chix Hot Chicken serves Chicken and Waffles ($14.90) as well! Do take note that they’re only available on Sundays.

If you’re looking for an eatery to hit up this weekend, then this is the best place to enjoy hearty and delicious fried chicken with your friends.

When I was a kid, I looked forward to Sunday mornings because that meant hotcakes from McDonald’s. I never quite understood why their hotcakes made me happy but all I knew was that the more maple syrup I poured and the more butter I spread, the happier I felt.

If you’re not familiar with soufflé pancakes, they’re lighter and fluffier than regular pancakes. Which explains why everyone has been jiggling this dessert for the ‘gram.

You can get these pancakes in cafes and restaurants but they’ll definitely cost you more than $10.

The soufflé pancakes from Sweet Rex comes in a set of 2 for just $3!

The fluffy pancakes from Sweet Rex are freshly made and served with a sauce of your choice – caramel, strawberry or chocolate. It’s everything you ever want in a pancake – light, airy and not too sweet.

If you could bite into clouds, then this is how I’d describe eating the soufflé pancakes from Sweet Rex.

Additionally, the stall also sells cheesecakes and puddings you can get at a low price. Here’s evidence that you can eat good even when you’re on a budget!

There’s chocolate, Thai milk tea, kopi, ginger and matcha pudding – which you can get at $2 each.

We highly recommend getting the Lemon Cheesecake ($3.80) which looks like “tofu”. The cake is a perfect balance of creamy and tangy, making it easy on the palate.

If you’re ever in Queenstown, then head down for Sweet Rex’s affordable desserts. However, they are only opened on weekends, and sporadically on weekdays. If you’re ever heading down on weekdays, best to give them a call!

Jay Chou, Martin Garrix, And Dua Lipa Part Of Singapore Grand Prix 2018’s Headlining Acts

The Singapore Grand Prix is back again for its 11th edition!

If you’ve been a loyal reader of DiscoverSG, you would’ve seen the article that we did about Super Early bird tickets being available for sale in September 2017.

Happening from 14 to 16 September 2018, the Singapore Grand Prix is set to take over the Marina Bay area once again!

An Insane Entertainment Lineup

This year, the organisers have managed to outdo themselves with the insane entertainment lineup with multiple international acts.

First of all, King of Asian Pop Jay Chou will be kicking off the performances on 14 September at the Padang Stage.

Joining him onstage will be Joanna Dong, who he recently mentored on the mandarin singing competition, Sing! China.

15 September sees Las Vegas-based rock band The Killers and former frontman of OASIS, Liam Gallagher take the stage together with Japanese band End of the World (SEKAI NO OWARI).

Go crazy on 16 September as Dutch DJ Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa grace the Padang stage with British Soul and Pop band, Simply Red.

Other international headliners include YOUNG FATHERS, the men who brought us the wonder of “Rapper’s Delight” – The Sugarhill Gang, and top ABBA tribute band, Björn Again!
