Hong Kong’s Famous Tsui Wah Cafe To Open First S’pore Outlet This June
Famed for their milk tea and condensed milk buns, Tsui Wah has risen to become a household name in Hong Kong.
Just like any other typical Singaporean, you can’t leave Hong Kong without getting a cup of “I love Tsui Wah” milk tea or pre packed bottles to bring home and indulge in the comfort of your own home.
[caption id="attachment_34872" align="aligncenter" width="1342"] Image Credit: @swany86[/caption]The Cha Chaan Teng has confirmed it will open its first Southeast Asia outlet – with a seating capacity of over 140 from 1pm on June 15 at Clarke Quay.
Does this mean, “No need to fly to Hong Kong liao?”
Who knows? But one thing’s for sure, we’re excited to finally get Tsui Wah’s famous milk tea and treats without having to pay for a flight ticket.
Milk Tea For Days
The most famous Cha Chaan Teng in Hong Kong is undisputedly Tsui Wah Restaurant. Locals and tourists alike flock to Tsui Wah Restaurant for their signature milk tea and crispy bun with condensed milk.
With a network of over 60 outlets in Hong Kong, Macau and China, Tsui Wah manages to maintain its high standards across all their branches.
So for all you Tsui Wah fans, mark your calendars as your favourite Cha Chaan Teng makes a debut in Singapore.
If this is your first time hearing about Tsui Wah, don’t worry. Here are some of the signature items you should try.
Disclaimer: Some of the items may not be in their menu during their opening but more exciting updates are to come as the menu progressively expands in the upcoming months!
1. Crispy Bun with Sweet Condensed Milk
“Crispy Bun served with sweet condensed milk” is Tsui Wah’s reinvention of a classic Hong Kong snack.
[caption id="attachment_34866" align="aligncenter" width="1392"] Image Credit: @zaobaosg.lifestyle[/caption]Each freshly baked bun is richly coated with thick butter and condensed milk, giving it an irresistible taste that is crispy on the outside and soft inside.
2. Hainanese Chicken Rice
Juicy, boneless and tender, the dish is served with a bowl of flavoured rice made with chicken stock, basil and lemon grass.
[caption id="attachment_34870" align="aligncenter" width="1174"] Image Credit: @7layerdiep[/caption]Everyone raves about the Hainanese Chicken Rice at Tsui Wah, so if you’re looking for real good comfort food, their Chicken Rice should definitely be one of your choices.
3. Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Flat Rice Noodles in Fish Soup
If you’re in need of a warm, hearty bowl of soup, this dish won’t disappoint.
[caption id="attachment_34865" align="aligncenter" width="1076"] Image Credit: @missfoodieny[/caption]Tsui Wah fish balls are made daily with handpicked yellow eels and over 10 types of fresh fish. Some have claimed that they’ve had better fish soups in Singapore, but if you’re looking for a quick, fuss free supper choice, then get this fish soup!
This is definitely the ultimate go-to after drinks at Clarke Quay!
4. Swiss Sauce Chicken Wings
Tsui Wah takes this Cantonese favourite to the next level by marinating the wings with aromatic sweet soy sauce. The wings absorb the sweet soy sauce fully and offer a real treat of juiciness and tenderness.
[caption id="attachment_34869" align="aligncenter" width="1342"] Image Credit: @foodienando[/caption]This dish is finger lickin’ good, that’s for sure.
5. King Prawns in XO Sauce with Tossed Noodles
This is one of Tsui Wah’s signature items as well!
[caption id="attachment_34868" align="aligncenter" width="1344"] Image Credit: @yuwwie[/caption]Their king prawns are succulent and fresh! The noodles are slightly chewy and thin. It also comes with chilli on the side for that extra kick.
Honestly, this seems like a dish most won’t mind eating everyday!
6. HK Milk Tea
Saving the best for last, Tsui Wah combines premium Ceylon tea leaves and with many years of teas-training know-how to bring the perfect cup.
[caption id="attachment_34867" align="aligncenter" width="1348"] Image Credit: @foodiesister.id[/caption]With a touch of Holland’s Black & White evaporated milk in a preheated teacup, this milk tea is perfection.
We’re extremely excited for Tsui Wah’s first outlet in Clarke Quay. As much as we’d all love a trip to Hong Kong for a break, I’m definitely happy that we can FINALLY get their famous dishes and milk tea right here in Singapore.
We definitely expect long queues on June 15, so go early to beat the crowd!

No Frills, Just Damn Good Meat At OG Roasted Meat Stall Toh Kee
I love roasted meat. There’re no words to adequately express my love for roasted pork. There’s no way to properly describe the taste of the crispy crackling resting atop the layers of fatty pork.
Okay this is becoming a little too haram. But you get my point. Like me, there are many other people who love eating roasted meat. It’s commonly found in hawker centres and coffeeshops and it’s a simple meal.
I’m always trying to find a better roasted pork rice than the ones I’ve had. Which brings us to this particular roasted meat stall in People’s Park Complex Food Centre.
Enter Toh Kee Roasted Meat.
Roasted With Care Since 1926
Toh Kee Roasted Meat has been around since 1926 and is apparently the oldest roasted meat stall in Singapore.
[caption id="attachment_34807" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Hardware Zone[/caption]Must-tries definitely include their roasted duck, roasted pork and char siew. After all, they are a roasted meat stall.
You’ll notice that the roasted ducks hanging in the display are a darker shade than usual. That’s because Toh Kee use a 60-year-old charcoal roaster that’s no longer in production.
So appreciate the roasted meat while it lasts because if this charcoal roaster goes….
Anyway, the duck is seasoned with salt, garlic, spring onions and five-spice powder before being roasted and malt syrup is used to glaze the skin of the duck immediately after.
The result is juicy roasted duck meat with sweet, sticky, crispy skin, served on a bed of braised soy beans which is rare to see nowadays. Because honestly, who eats the cucumbers anymore?
[caption id="attachment_34808" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Angeline[/caption]The roasted pork is perfect, with exceptionally crispy crackling and melt-in-the-mouth fatty layers. The roasted pork isn’t overly salty either. My favourite part is the corner, or last piece of the slice, where it’s just entirely crackling with just a bit of lean meat.
[caption id="attachment_34810" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Jankliciouz[/caption]The char siew or BBQ pork, is leaner than the usual char siew you can get from elsewhere. I understand that most people prefer fattier char siew because lean meat if not done well can be tough.
[caption id="attachment_34809" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Angeline[/caption]However the char siew at Toh Kee is still tender and isn’t too sweet that it becomes jelak.
So far, my only gripe is that the roasted meat is served with white rice. I mean, for the price that I’m paying for the food, maybe ‘chicken rice’ rice would be better?
[caption id="attachment_34811" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Alexis Toh[/caption]The prices here at Toh Kee are a little steeper than usual. A plate of Roasted Duck Rice is $5, while Char Siew Rice and Roasted Pork Rice are $4 and $4.50 respectively.
Then again, I’m willing to fork out a little more if the food is good.
We suggest that you come early if you’re going to order the roasted pork because it sells out very quickly.
Honestly, Toh Kee has managed to perfect roasted meat. All they need to do is pay more attention to the accompanying ingredients. I’m looking at you, white rice.
But that aside, if you’re looking for a change to your usual roasted meat place, give Toh Kee Roasted Meat a shot. Who knows? It might become your new favourite.

Artbox 2018: What To Eat, Drink And Buy To Make The Most Of Your Money
It’s that time of the year again! Artbox Singapore is back for its second run, and promises to be bigger and better than before.
If you’ve been to Artbox last year, you may have left severely disappointed as the event faced an overwhelming turnout. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, it is a wildly popular market that supports local creators retailing everything from beauty, fashion, food and art.
Originating from Bangkok, Artbox Singapore recreates the vibrancy of Thai night markets, but you wouldn’t need a flight ticket this time.
So if you’ve got a bae and some friends, head down to Artbox Singapore which spans over two weekends from 25-27 May 2018 as well as 1-3 June 2018 from 3-11 pm at the Bayfront Event Space near The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
Food At Artbox Singapore 2018
If you saw the insta-worthy food pics from last year, you’ll know that food is the main highlight of the event. Dive into over 160 bustling F&B stalls each weekend for a wide variety of food to choose from.
Here’s what we got that definitely got DiscoverSG’s stamp of approval. Now, the food at Artbox is not Thai-Night-Market-Cheap but we tried out food that’s worth your money and not overly pretentious.
1. Golden Moments
I’m a huge fan of durian. I’m not being biased but this is definitely one of THE best Mao Shan Wang Ice Cream ($9.90) I’ve tried in Singapore.
Just look at it!
[caption id="attachment_34752" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]The bamboo charcoal infused ice cream has a subtle hint of MSW flavour. It is bittersweet and creamy and topped with 24K gold leaves.
I expected it to be jelak after a few bites but I surprisingly managed to devour the entire durian ice cream without feeling sick or heaty. If you’re not a huge durian lover, this ice cream might just change your mind.
It was slightly pricey for what is essentially durian ice cream, but it is definitely worth trying.
This limited edition ice cream is making its first appearance at this year’s Artbox, so if you know anyone who loves durian, you HAVE to bring them here.
If the ice cream is not enough, you can also try their Durian Platter ($18.80) which consists of durian mochi, durian puffs and the ice cream.
[caption id="attachment_34753" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]If you’re in need of a good dessert, then Golden Moments is a must visit at this year’s Artbox.
2. Saiko
Don’t you just hate it when you buy takoyaki at a pasar malam and you can barely taste the octopus in it?
Serving up Japanese street food realness, Saiko serves takoyaki in sizeable portions with full bite-sized octopus. You can choose from 3 different fillings – octopus, chicken and braised mushrooms. You also have the option of mixing 2 different fillings in one serving.
[caption id="attachment_34760" align="aligncenter" width="4029"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]We got their Classic ($8) which comes with 6 takoyaki topped with bonito flakes, seaweed and torched Japanese mayo.
[caption id="attachment_34759" align="aligncenter" width="3807"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]This was hands down one of the best Takoyaki I’ve had in a very long time. It’s also the perfect bite-sized snack as you walk around Artbox.
3. Cha Tra Mue
When in Thailand, always get their Thai Milk Tea!
The weather was scorching hot and we were in desperate need of a good drink. We walked around and came across a stall selling the famous Cha Tra Mue brand teas.
[caption id="attachment_34761" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]You no longer have to ask your friends to buy you a packet of instant Cha Tra Mue from Thailand because its readily available at most bazaars and festivals in Singapore.
We recommend getting the 1-litre Thai Milk Tea ($4) because it is an absolute life saver in Singapore’s crazy weather. 10/10 would buy again!
4. The6ixsRosti
I was surprised to find a stall specialising in rosti at Artbox. I had high hopes for this one as I saw a queue forming at The6ixsRosti.
Being the typical kiasu Singaporean that I am, I knew I had to try this rosti.
[caption id="attachment_34763" align="aligncenter" width="3589"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]We opted for the Spicy Rosti with Mozarella Cheese ($7) – perhaps one of my favourite purchases of the day.
[caption id="attachment_34762" align="aligncenter" width="3845"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]The rosti is pan fried to perfection. It’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The spicy rosti actually had quite a kick to it, so if you can handle your spice, opt for the spicy rosti.
5. Thai Foodie Palace SG
I knew I couldn’t leave Artbox without getting any Thai Desserts. Just like any other basic Singaporean, I knew I couldn’t leave without trying the Mango Sticky Rice.
The cheapest Mango Sticky Rice I could find at Artbox was from Foodie Palace SG which sold a box for $6.
[caption id="attachment_34758" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]I never thought I would ever have to pay $6 for mango sticky rice, but I can’t complain. Their mango sticky rice turned out to be pretty good. The mango was sweet and they gave us a generous portion of sticky rice as well.
[caption id="attachment_34757" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]Safe to say, we wiped the entire box clean. It was the perfect ending to my food hunt at Artbox.
Cheap Cheap, Good Good
Besides the food, you can also explore more than 200 retail booths! Each weekend brings forth a different set of unique and creative lifestyle and fashion vendors from Thailand and Singapore.
6. Oasis:Skin
If you’re in need of a good skincare routine, Oasis:Skin is an all-natural skincare company that believes in delivering high quality plant-based products that can help people rebuild their skin barrier in a natural way.
[caption id="attachment_34768" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]They use 100% natural and high-quality ingredients that are carefully sourced from artisanal producers and botanical experts from all over the world.
If your skin is in need of some desperate TLC, then you should try out their face mists. They have several face mists that targets dry skin, oily skin and even sensitive skin!
[caption id="attachment_34770" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]They also sell clay masks for those “treat yo’self” kind of days. The masks are packaged in its pure clay form as it has a longer shelf life, and there is no need for any harmful chemicals to preserve it.
[caption id="attachment_34769" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]7. Common Touch
If you’re looking for unique and quirky pieces to place around the house, then you’ll love the ceramics by Common Touch.
[caption id="attachment_34767" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]Common Touch is a Singapore-based craft unit working together to create distinctive and purely handcrafted ceramic homeware. From different types of clay and combination of stains and glazes, each piece is hand-thrown and individually crafted.
[caption id="attachment_34764" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]You can also get hand-made jewellery at this store. If you know anyone who is a fan of minimal jewellery, then you should definitely check out Common Touch at Artbox!
[caption id="attachment_34766" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]You can also find plenty of stalls around Artbox selling everything from tops and pants to tote bags and leather wallets. What’s more, you can pay by DBS PayLah! at most stalls so you don’t have to worry about running out of cash after all that shopping!
This year’s Artbox definitely did not disappoint. With a variety of retail booths and F&B stalls to choose from, there’s definitely something for everyone here.
Pro-tip: Carry and umbrella and wear comfortable clothes because our weather is extremely unpredictable!

Pink Dot Turns 10 This July – All Are Welcome To Celebrate The Freedom To Love
The annual gay pride rally, Pink Dot is back to mark its milestone tenth edition with an expanded array of activities and a strong message to Singaporeans.
This time round, Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans (yay!) are invited to celebrate Singapore’s biggest LGBTQ-affirming event.
This year, Pink Dot organisers managed to find a way to let everyone participate, no matter the citizenship.
Grab your pink outfits and celebrate Pink Dot 10 with your loved ones and stand strong together on Saturday, 21 July 2018.
#FreedomToLove
For the past nine editions, Pink Dot has worked hard to win the hearts and mind of Singaporeans to help bring the message of inclusion and diversity to everyone on this Little Red Dot.
[caption id="attachment_34716" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: @yan.dao.kia[/caption]Pink Dot spokesperson Paerin Choa said, “The 10th year is a reflection of looking back”.
Despite the challenges the organisers face each time such as the “Wear White Campaign” in 2014 where they urged followers to wear white in protest of Pink Dot on the weekend of the event, Pink Dot stands strong till this day.
[caption id="attachment_34722" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: @yan.dao.kia[/caption]Continuing from its successful debut last year, Red Dot for Pink Dot returns with another fundraising drive, calling on corporate Singapore to continue taking a stand for inclusion and diversity with a current tally of more than 60 local sponsors.
Year after year, Pink Dot attendees look forward to headlining local artistes as they declare their undying support for the Freedom To Love through song. The Pink Dot Concert will also be hosted on a purpose-built stage as Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green Community Centre undergoes renovations.
[caption id="attachment_34717" align="aligncenter" width="1365"] Image Credit: Sebastian Tan[/caption]In addition to the usual festival tent, concert and light up, there will also be a PinkFest.
Spanning across two weekends prior to Pink Dot, PinkFest will see close to a dozen businesses, groups and individuals, LGBTQ and straight allies, organising an assortment of privately-run activities and events geared towards greater engagement with Singaporeans.
You can expect movie screenings, bake sales, art talks and more!
Similar to last year’s outing, you are required to show photo ID (pink/blue NRIC or passport) to volunteers and security personnel before being admitted into the park.
However, there will only be one dedicated entrance, which will bring you to 12 different checkpoints. Once they hit max capacity, they won’t be able to let anyone else in. You’re encouraged to come early!
If you’re attending this year’s Pink Dot, here’s a look at their first campaign video.

Why Book A Hotel Room When You Can Party On A Yacht For The Same Price?
Boat parties have long been an activity favoured by the high SES demographic.
There’s something about being on the ‘high’ SES (read: seas) that makes a party appear more lavish than it seems. Is it the sun or the sea breeze?
But that’s beside the point. Did you know that you can now rent a yacht for the same price as booking a lavish hotel suite?
[caption id="attachment_34697" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]However, there are a few problems with the current process of renting a yacht in Singapore.
Firstly, finding a yacht owner who is willing to rent their yacht. The current process is to trawl forums or find a yacht owner by word of mouth.
Next is finding one that suits your budget and occasion.
This tiresome process is time-consuming and might ultimately come to naught in the end.
This is where Yachtly comes in.
Yachtly is Singapore’s first yacht rental platform perfect for a wide range of occasions and budgets.
It allows you to take your parties and special events out to sea, all while making the process of booking a yacht seamless and effortless.
Sailing Yachtly On The High Seas
I have to admit I’m a bit of a “suaku”. I’ve never been on a yacht in my life unless you count the Tekong ‘Penguin’ Ferry. Never thought the first time I board one will be for an office yacht party.
We boarded the yacht, a gorgeous Leopard 51 Power Catamaran, at One Degree 15 Marina.
[caption id="attachment_34700" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption][caption id="attachment_34710" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]
The first thing I noticed was the food.
Stacked trays of beehoon, fried rice, chicken wings, stir fried vegetables and samosas on the table at the back of the yacht.
Apparently, Yachtly has partnered with Halal-certified catering companies such as Neo Group and EZBBQ to provide either cooked food or barbecue food.
And that’s not all, some of the yachts might even provide complimentary BBQ services or BBQ rentals at a nominal fee.
You can also choose to bring your own food and alcohol on board. They even have a small fridge and microwave for you to store and heat up your food!
Just take special care and dispose your rubbish properly and NOT in the sea.
Now, being the “suaku” that I am, I scrambled up to the top deck and heaved a sigh of relief. It was better than I expected – breezy, spacious and scenic.
[caption id="attachment_34701" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]After the captain laid the ground rules on board the yacht (No littering, no food, drinks, and wet people in the cabin etc.), we set sail out of the Marina and onto the high seas!
The water might be choppier on certain days outside of the Marina so ALWAYS follow the safety rules on board the yacht.
[caption id="attachment_34702" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]So away we sailed towards Lazarus Island and dropped anchor within the cove, safely tucked away behind the island where the big scary waves can’t rock this yacht.
[caption id="attachment_34711" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]Armed with a large unicorn float and the inflatable slide on board, one by one we jumped in.
[caption id="attachment_34708" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]Not me. I was lying on the upper deck watching the sun set and the clouds go by.
If you’re wondering where the girls showered and changed, the yacht has 2 decent-sized bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
[caption id="attachment_34704" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption][caption id="attachment_34705" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]
When the sun set, we had dinner and we heard a shriek. Someone found the karaoke machine in the cabin.
[caption id="attachment_34707" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption][caption id="attachment_34706" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]
The rest of the night’s activities comprised mainly of singing. Some in the cabin with the karaoke machine, and most of us on the upper deck with the acoustic guitar.
As we sang the night away, our yacht set sail towards Marina Bay Sands for a glorious view of the Singapore city skyline before looping back to One Degree 15 Marina.
Book Your Own Yacht, Airbnb-Style
The Yachtly website is reminiscent of Airbnb, in that the process of booking a yacht is simple and fuss-free.
Choose the occasion. Is it a family gathering, a wedding, a celebration party, or a corporate event?
Select the date that you need to charter the yacht.
Lastly, indicate the number of guests and hit ‘Enter’!
Yachtly will generate a list of yachts in their fleet that suit your criteria. You can even toggle the budget and select the yacht type!
They have yachts that can accommodate up to 50 people.
Their price range starts as low as $400 up to $10,000, depending on your criteria.
If you’re unsure at any point, Yachtly has a live chat function that you can access to speak to an agent immediately.
