Admission is free.
River Hongbao 2018 The cafe will be completely redecorated with the Care Bears. While it doesn’t exactly resemble Care-a-lot, this will do. As with all past iterations of character cafes, what everyone is looking forward to is the themed food, and the Care Bears don’t intend to lose out to the Sanrio characters. For the pasta lovers, there’s the Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90) which is a classic Pomodoro spaghetti with shitake mushrooms, cherry tomato confit, and parmesan cheese. If you’re looking for something more substantial, there’s the Cheer-Up Chicken Katsu ($21.90). Were you expecting a chicken cutlet? Because we were. But it’s actually a burger! A juicy Japanese katsu chicken slathered generously with teriyaki sauce is sandwiched between soft burger buns, topped with a sunny-side up and cheddar cheese, served with a garden salad, crisp fries and mushroom soup. Every past character cafe has had their own version of Kumoya’s desserts and drinks and this is no exception. Go for the Rainbow Garden Strawberry Parfait ($18.90) – Strawberry Hokkaido soft serve is served with vanilla pudding, meringue drops, fresh fruits, chocolate sable, a rainbow candy strip and mixed berries sauce. That’s not all. End off your meal with their Calpis drinks or special Care Bears teas. The Cute Cuddly Calpis ($11.90) combines Berry flavoured Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream, while the Magic Mango Strawberry ($11.90) uses Mango Strawberry Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream. If you grew up with Care Bears like us, this is one character pop-up cafe that you shouldn’t miss! Available from 1 February 2018 till 31 March 2018, don’t miss out on a chance to dine in Care-a-lot! Care Bears x Kumoya Summer Hill is the newest restaurant to pop up in Sunset Way, serving up affordable French cuisine without GST and service charge. This cosy bistro serves up simple French fare that is oh-so-simple, yet oh-so-good. Dishes on their Special board as well as sides are rotated weekly so your meal there is always different and exciting. Must-tries include their Poulet Roti ($23 for half, $45 for whole), the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar ($25), Croque Monsieur ($17.50), and the Orange & Rosemary-Scented Olive Oil Cake With Cream ($3). The Poulet Roti uses hormone and antibiotic-free chicken that has been marinated with herb butter before it’s roasted to perfection. The result is roast chicken that is juicy yet still retains its skin’s crispiness. If you’re not a fan of chicken, then the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar is the main dish for you. Tangy, tender, and satisfying. The mustard and sage sauce provides a contrast of flavours, cutting through the heaviness of the tender pork so that you won’t feel jelak. The Croque Monsieur is basically a levelled-up ham and cheese sandwich. Ham, Swiss cheese, bechamel sauce, and dijon mustard sandwiched between 2 thick slices of grilled sourdough bread. Sounds like heaven to us. That’s not all, more Swiss cheese is garnished on the top of the sandwich for more cheesy goodness. If you’re a fan of French cuisine, or just appreciate comfort food, then you need to drop by Summer Hill next. Summer Hill Hidden away in the suburbs of Jurong West, is OH MY MANGO dessert bar. This unassuming dessert bar serves up various mango-flavoured food, and one of those is a mean Mango Shibuya Toast ($10.90). Soft and fluffy on the inside, while toasted and crispy on the outside, the shibuya toast is topped with mango ice cream, diced mango, almond flakes, drizzled generously with mango sauce, and served with a dollop of whipped cream. This is basically a mango overload but not in a bad way. If you’re a big fan of mango, you have to try this. OH MY MANGO dessert bar also has a rather extensive menu of mango-flavoured drinks. A hot favourite among customers is the Matcha Mango Latte ($5.90). A bottom layer of mango bits, followed by a layer of milk, topped off with a layer of matcha. This tri-coloured creation might seem like a weird flavour combination, but the slight bitterness of matcha cuts through the sweetness and sometimes too jelak taste of the mango and milk, resulting in a rather interesting flavour. OH MY MANGO dessert bar is constantly adding new desserts and drinks to their menu, so keep checking their Facebook page to stay up to date! OH MY MANGO Dessert Bar W Market is back again with their CNY Pop-up Market! From 3 to 4 February 2018, this CNY Pop-up market at Capitol Piazza will feature retail, crafts, and food and beverage vendors. Patrons can expect to see craft and retail vendors such as Operation Overhaul, Aromamaymay, That Pretty Fairy, Our Bralette Club, BottlesXO, Wild Knots, Sunday Peach, and many more! If you’re hungry, there will also be food from Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar and many others. For $35 per person, try your hand at the Paint A Doll workshop by LeArty.Sg. Gather your friends and family and head down to this CNY pop-up market this weekend! A Care Bear-Themed Cafe Is Springing Up In S’pore And It Will Awaken Your Inner Child

Singapore has seen so many character cafes pop up in the recent years, it’s almost as if it’s an elaborate scheme to get us to keep throwing money in pursuit of that perfect Instagram shot.
Of course, we all know this. But that doesn’t stop us from visiting these character cafes when they pop up in succession.
Once again, Kumoya has partnered with Little Miss Bento and American Greeting to bring us Care Bears x Kumoya, a Care Bears-themed cafe.
Step Into Care-a-lot, Home Of The Care Bears
From 1 February to 31 March 2018, Kumoya will be transformed into Care-a-lot, the home of the Care Bears.
[caption id="attachment_32951" align="aligncenter" width="987"]
The cafe will be completely redecorated with the Care Bears. While it doesn’t exactly resemble Care-a-lot, this will do.
As with all past iterations of character cafes, what everyone is looking forward to is the themed food, and the Care Bears don’t intend to lose out to the Sanrio characters.
Food Prepared With Care
First up, we have The Seafood Chowder you’ll Love-a-lot ($28.90).
[caption id="attachment_32946" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
This seafood-loaded chunky stew comes with a generous amount of shrimp and squid, as well as chunks of carrot and broccoli, served with a bed of beetroot-stained rice shaped like Love-a-lot bear.
For the pasta lovers, there’s the Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90) which is a classic Pomodoro spaghetti with shitake mushrooms, cherry tomato confit, and parmesan cheese.
[caption id="attachment_32955" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
If you’re looking for something more substantial, there’s the Cheer-Up Chicken Katsu ($21.90).
[caption id="attachment_32968" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
Were you expecting a chicken cutlet? Because we were. But it’s actually a burger!
A juicy Japanese katsu chicken slathered generously with teriyaki sauce is sandwiched between soft burger buns, topped with a sunny-side up and cheddar cheese, served with a garden salad, crisp fries and mushroom soup.
While the mains look adorable and Instagram-worthy, the sides don’t disappoint either.
Served in a limited-edition snack holder, choose from the Truffle Fries ($11.90), Salted Egg Yolk Fries ($11.90), Chicken And Corn Sticks With Nacho Cheese ($12.90) and Karaage Chicken With Shoyu Glaze ($12.90).
Salted egg lovers will love the Salted Egg Yolk Fries, which comes sprinkled with salted egg cereal crunch and salted egg mayo dip. There’s no such thing as too much salted egg.
[caption id="attachment_32973" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
Kumoya’s signature crispy karaage chicken also gets a makeover, with a homemade sweet shoyu glaze.
[caption id="attachment_32977" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
Every past character cafe has had their own version of Kumoya’s desserts and drinks and this is no exception.
Go for the Rainbow Garden Strawberry Parfait ($18.90) – Strawberry Hokkaido soft serve is served with vanilla pudding, meringue drops, fresh fruits, chocolate sable, a rainbow candy strip and mixed berries sauce.
[caption id="attachment_32979" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
Not a fan of vanilla pudding? How about waffles? The Spread-The-Cheer Waffles ($19.90) combines Kumoya’s signature waffles with the strawberry Hokkaido soft serve, mixed berries sauce, meringue drops, wafer sticks, and Care Bear cookies.
[caption id="attachment_32980" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]
That’s not all. End off your meal with their Calpis drinks or special Care Bears teas.
The Cute Cuddly Calpis ($11.90) combines Berry flavoured Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream, while the Magic Mango Strawberry ($11.90) uses Mango Strawberry Calpis with a mountain of fresh cream.

The “Rasa Sayang” ($14) is a blend of rose infused water mixed with strawberry, mint leaves and more! Just like the folk song itself, this drink captures much of the Malay character.
[caption id="attachment_32920" align="aligncenter" width="830"]
If you’d like a little sugar, spice and everything nice, get the “Tiga Abdul” ($15) which is inspired by the classic 1964 movie played by famous actor P. Ramlee.
[caption id="attachment_32923" align="aligncenter" width="1362"]
Feeling a little daring? You can make your very own customised mocktail starting at $13. Who knows they might just name a mocktail after you!
If you’re feeling a little hungry, they serve up bar snacks such as Honey Wings ($10). Oh and did you know they serve Keropok Lekor ($8) as well? Talk about the perfect snack.

The Definitive Guide To Not Appearing ‘Suaku’ At An Art Festival

If you’re clueless as to how you should behave appropriately at an Art festival or exhibition, you’re certainly not alone.
It’s absolutely fine if you do not know how to act or what to say at certain art installations because we’ve come up with some fool proof steps that you can apply at any art festival or exhibition.
1. Nod (But Not Too Fervently) At Every Installation
Sometimes, the artist statements can be too cheem for the layman, and you’re just not able to fully comprehend what the artist is trying to convey.
But you don’t want people to know that you don’t know. So you pretend and you nod.
One of the most stunning installations is the Flowers And People – Dark interactive installation at National Gallery Singapore. The installation changes with every movement that visitors make. Each visual you see can never be replicated and is completely unique
[caption id="attachment_32874" align="aligncenter" width="480"]
2. Do The “Steve Jobs”
No, not invent the iPhone. You know that thing he does where he rubs his thumb and index finger in an inquisitive fashion?
Lai we show you.
[caption id="attachment_32875" align="aligncenter" width="480"]
This technique will be applicable in The House Is Crumbling sculptural installation, where visitors can interact and create different structures using the moveable pillows.
3. Use Words Like “Nuance” A Lot
To look like you know your stuff, you have to speak in their language.
[caption id="attachment_32876" align="aligncenter" width="480"]
For optimal effect, do this in an art exhibition where everything is quieter, like the Colours Of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay exhibition at the Gallery.
This weekend and next, National Gallery Singapore’s opening hours will be extended and admission is FREE for all exhibitions including Century of Light which features Colours of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, and Between Worlds: Raden Saleh and Juan Luna.
4. Bring Up And Mention Any Art Experience You’ve Had
The good thing about receiving your education in Singapore, is that Arts & Crafts is a subject in Primary school. And for most people, that is probably the only time they did anything remotely “artsy”.
So use it. “Wah I remember when I was doing my graduation project and I had to create something similar to this. It was damn tough. Legit.”
If any of your friends decide to call your bluff, ignore them and move on. Life’s too short.
An interesting installation is the A Stitch In Time exhibit at the National Gallery Singapore, where members of the public stitched and sewed their names, pictures, poems, and personal keepsakes on to a large piece of white cloth.
[caption id="attachment_32877" align="aligncenter" width="1732"]
5. Bring A Friend Who Can “Art” And Let Them Do The Talking
If you don’t know what to say, say nothing. Let your friend do the talking. If you don’t understand something, get them to explain.
[caption id="attachment_32878" align="aligncenter" width="480"]
But then again, you’re at an art festival, why are you “studying” the pieces?
Go enjoy yourself!
Disconnect and immerse yourself in Walk, Walk, Walk: Search, Deviate, Reunite exhibit.
It’s a labyrinth with virtual projections of different landscapes such as a bamboo forest, wheat field and cherry blossom forest, as well as strangely catchy music that we cannot get enough of.

Hidden Hawker Fare In The CBD, So Lunch Doesn’t Have To Cost Over $5

Tall, shiny glass towers, sprawling skyscrapers, the infamous ERP and people donned in crisp, smart suits. When you think of Singapore’s CBD, such imagery may come to mind.
Many of us working – or interning – in the CBD know the struggle of trying to eat cheaply in the CBD. If you’re tired of burning a hole in your wallet from eating $10 lunches everyday, here are some delicious hidden (and not so hidden) hawker gems that will ease the burden on your wallets.

1. Amoy St Boon Kee Prawn Noodle
If we had to describe the prawn mee at Amoy St Boon Kee Prawn Noodle in one word, it would be ‘SHIOK!‘.

Previously located at the old Amara Food Court, the stall has since shifted to Hoe Chiang Road, where it still sees brisk business everyday.
Their soup consists of a clear broth, as well as a generous serving of soya beans to amp up the flavour. Priced at $4.20 for rice/noodle with 6 ingredients ($0.60 per add. piece), you can expect long queues during lunchtime.

3. Ace Eating House
The char siew chicken rice stall and the fish soup bee hoon stall at this coffee shop are the bomb.
[caption id="attachment_32786" align="aligncenter" width="640"]
A plate of char siew rice costs $3, while a plate of fried fish bee hoon noodles costs $4. Great value for your money, the food at this coffee shop will make you want to come back for more.
What’s also great about this coffee shop is that it opens until the wee hours of the morning. This means if you OT late into the night, you’ll be able to get your food fix here. While not all the stalls open till late, you can always count on the tze char stall to come through with some midnight grub.

Housed in Clifford Centre, a popular lunch haunt among the office crowd, Scorch sells Taiwanese Lu Rou Fan (Braised Meat Rice) from a very reasonable $3. Aside from Lu Rou Fan, you’ll also find Nasi Lemak set lunches from $2.50. Yes, you can find cheap food in the CBD.

6. Swagat Indian Vegetarian Stall
Nestled within the throngs of government buildings, offices and hotels is an old building called Peninsula Plaza.
[caption id="attachment_32796" align="alignnone" width="1200"]
Standing at its corner of the street for many years, it’s one of those places you pass on your way to the glitzier Raffles City Shopping Centre. Something not many Singaporeans know is that its basement boasts a great array of food choices, with affordable meals easily found at their food court, Food Alley.
[caption id="attachment_32798" align="aligncenter" width="613"]
At this food court, you’ll find Swagat Indian Vegetarian Stall. An indian vegetarian stall that sells vegetarian dishes like naan, mee goreng and thosai, vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will find something to fill their bellies here. Masala thosai costs $3.50, while plain thosai costs just $1.60!

7. Tony Café
While there’s plenty of good food in City Hall, there’s not a lot of variety in the way of cheap food. An under $5 gem you must check out is Tony Café in The Adelphi.
[caption id="attachment_32780" align="aligncenter" width="570"]
Here, a plate of chicken wings (fried/honey) rice is $3.50 and if you add curry vegetables and salted egg, your grand total will be just $4.50. A plus point is that this stall is fully air-conditioned, so you get to enjoy finger-licking good fried chicken without sweating buckets.
