Up Your IG Game With Neon Installations And Catch A Pikachu Parade At Palawan Beach – Runs Till Dec 31

If the Disney-themed light up (and crowds) at Orchard Road aren’t for you, take a detour down south to Sentosa instead.

Island Lights 2018 is the second edition of Sentosa’s pop-up art festival featuring 10 photo-worthy installations scattered across Palawan Beach.

Night At Palawan Beach

Previously known as Pop Up Night, the inaugural Island Lights 2018 returns just in time for the year-end festivities. From now till 31 December 2018, Sentosa’s Palawan Beach has been made over with commissioned works from local artists.

You can expect to be transported to a multi-sensory wonderland with a series of photo-worthy opportunities to get your ‘gram on.

Here are some of the installations to look out for:

1. ASMR Wonderland

Step into ASMR Wonderland for a truly immersive experience.

Multi-disciplinary artist Yang, brings the social media trend to life with an original ASMR soundtrack wafting peacefully over the enclosed room of tarp-covered sand. Think ball pit but softer and relaxing.

2. Harmony

Possibly the coolest outdoor installation is Harmony by multi disciplinary designer – Tina Fung.

She explores the intersection between art, set design, interaction and the environment – in a neon lit setup of hands set against the backdrop of the sea.

3. KTVMTV

KTVMTV by Mash-Up is a 90s dream come true. Mash-Up is an independent Singaporean label that creates bold garments featuring tongue-in-cheek references to pop-up culture.

This installation lets you unleash your inner teenage fantasies of being a superstar. Combining the traditionally tacky designs of karaoke studios and the vibes of a 1990s music video, live out your childhood dreams at KTVMTV.

4. Islands, Barnacles and Other Living Dreams

You definitely won’t miss this glittery pink installation!

Artist Soph O invites you to write a wish and hang it up with those of others before you. Who knows, your dreams might just come true.

5. Pikachu Night Parade

Everyone’s favourite Pokemon, Pikachu, will be joining the party as well! Catch the adorable parade from Japan which will take place at 7.30pm on 14 – 16 December and 21 – 23 December. This parade will feature nine LED-lit Pikachus dancing along a 100m route.

It’s bound to be sweaty, otaku-fuelled madness.

After all that walking and ‘gramming, check out the main area of Palawan Beach which has been converted into a twinkling dining area, complete with food, drinks and live performances from local bands.

If you’re looking to avoid the madness at Orchard Road this end of year, perhaps a trip down to Sentosa is the perfect option.

Also, it’s finally an excuse to go to the beach at night!

Broke AF Couples Can Finally Afford A Staycation In Sentosa Starting April 2019

It’s confirmed. Singaporeans LOVE going on staycations.

No, really. Expedia did a whole survey on it.

In their 2018 Singapore Staycation Study, Singaporeans go an average of 2 staycations per year whereas parents with children are also most likely to go on one.

Planning your next staycation? Again? Well you’re not alone because a lot of us are probably planning our annual year end staycations as well. As much as we love cosy boutique hotels in the city, the idea of spending the night at a luxury hotel in Sentosa sounds perfect too!

But if the thought of spending a minimum of $600 per night makes you cry, don’t fret. 3 new mid-tier hotels will be opening in Sentosa from April next year according to a report by Channel NewsAsia.

Living The Luxe Life

The hotels which was announced first last year, will target the mid-tier segment which includes families, young adults on staycations as well as business travellers.

The 3 hotels are:

1. Outpost Hotel (Opening April 2019)

2. Village Hotel (Opening April 2019)

3. The Barracks Hotel (Opening August 2019)

All 3 hotels are situated in the Palawan area – giving you easy access to the Imbiah monorail station and across the road from Universal Studios Singapore.

Here’s a sneak peak of the hotels:

Village Hotel Sentosa

The largest of the 3 hotels, Village Hotel at Sentosa will house 606 rooms targeted towards families, business travellers and groups. Facilities include themed pool zones, a children’s play pool as well as a lazy river pool.

[caption id="attachment_37921" align="aligncenter" width="991"] Image Credit: Far East Hospitality[/caption]

Outpost Hotel

Slightly more atas, Outpost Hotel will feature 193 rooms – which includes a rooftop pool and bar as well as a wedding hall – perfect for couples who are planning on a luxurious wedding set in Sentosa.

If you’re looking for a more romantic option, Outpost Hotel is the perfect option for a getaway with bae.

[caption id="attachment_37923" align="aligncenter" width="991"] Image Credit: Far East Hospitality[/caption]

The Barracks Hotel

The smallest of the 3 hotels, The Barracks Hotel is nothing short of spectacular. If you have extra cash to spare, go for The Barracks as its 40 rooms promise guests exclusivity and privacy.

Just like the hotels in the Changi vicinity, the development will be housed in a refurbished conserved colonial building.

So if you’ve been longing for a short getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city, your Sentosa staycation dreams are about to come true.

Because let’s be real, who can really afford Capella, right?

Watch Out For Pontianaks, Zombies And The Demogorgon At USS Halloween Horror Nights 2018

From 27 September to 31 October, Singapore’s largest and most iconic Halloween event, Universal Studios Singapore’s Halloween Horror Nights (USS HHN), is back for its eighth edition.

As a visual play on the number ‘8’, this year’s theme of Infinite Fear is inspired by the infinity insignia ∞, which means that fans can expect a night of never-ending cycle of fear, thrills and countless scares in the park.

Infinite Fear

Featuring five terrifying haunted houses, three killer live shows and two scare zones based on the critically acclaimed Netflix’s Stranger Things series (read all about it here), Asian folklore and Western scare acts, Halloween Horror Nights 8 at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is set to be bigger and scarier than ever.

Here’s what you can expect:

5 Haunted Houses

1. Stranger Things

https://www.facebook.com/ResortsWorldatSentosa/videos/10155738196709690/

This year, USS will collaborate with Netflix to bring to life its critically-acclaimed series, Stranger Things. The highly-anticipated Stranger Things haunted house will feature 12 rooms depicting 12 different scenes from Season 1 of the series.

Fans will be transported into twelve artfully recreated scenes and storylines, from the menacing Hawkins National Laboratory, to the Byers home adorned with an erratic display of flashing Christmas lights and the eerie Upside Down woods.

2. Pontianak

https://www.facebook.com/ResortsWorldatSentosa/videos/10155981693564690/

Be careful where you tread in this Malay village – the Pontianak is waiting for you.

Thrill-seekers will need to survive the various hair-raising scenes and stories of the Pontianak unfolding before their eyes, from how she was created, to the banana trees where she resides, and the laundry area where she sniffs out the next victim.

3. Killuminati

https://www.facebook.com/ResortsWorldatSentosa/videos/10156024094604690/

Enter the world of Killuminati – the Chinese secret society of vampires that has existed for centuries.

Watch out for never before seen stunts and expect lots of twists in this highly interactive house where even the bravest souls may end up in different secret rooms!

4. Pagoda of Peril

https://www.facebook.com/ResortsWorldatSentosa/videos/531790927258664/

Navigate your way through the Pagoda of Peril, where you’ll be faced with malevolent demons and terrifying spirits trapped in this eternal prison fighting in fury as they seek to find freedom.

The most vicious of them all – the Yin demon, who yearns for eternal life and power.

5. The Haunting of Oiwa

Step back in time to the chilling Edo-era of Japan in The Haunting of Oiwa and come face-to-face with Lady Oiwa who returns from the dead seeking revenge after being poisoned by her unfaithful husband.

Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Run or face the wrath of Lady Oiwa’s betrayal in the Haunting of Oiwa.

2 Scare Zones

1. Apocalypse: Earth

Get thrown into chaos at Apocalypse: Earth as Mother Earth unleashes her most terrifying forces.

Roam around the streets of New York, as Gaia destroys everything in her way with her most terrifying forces to take back what belongs to her and declare war on mankind.

2. Cannibal

Witness the ancient tribe of man-hunters in Cannibal, where the bodies of rivals killed in revenge are being devoured.

For the cannibals, revenge is raw. Escape the tribe where not one limb, nor organ, not even a single bone goes to waste.

3 Killer Live Shows

1. DEAD Talk

Take a break from the screams and join the charismatic Gideon Grim, the Motivational Death Coach, as he captivates guests with tips on highly effective scaring in DEAD Talks.

DEAD Talks is an all new, witty, seminar-style show with cutting-edge illusions, electrifying dancing and acrobatics at the Pantages Hollywood Theatre.

2. Scaremony

When darkness falls at Eight Lake Psychiatric Hospital, fear rises. Make your way through the unsettling, creepy halls of the hospital filled with screaming apparitions of unwilling patients. Once you enter, there’s no turning back.

Unlike previous editions of USS HHN with one Opening Scaremony held at the beginning of each event night, this year’s Scaremony will be held at various timings across the night (stay tuned for updates on specific timings).

This means that you’ll be able to catch it even if you aren’t able to make it at 7.30pm!

3. Blood And Bones

Each month, at half moon, the Chief of the tribe sacrifices their capture at the ancestral altar. The human sacrifice is possessed by the spirit of the ancestors, which gives the tribesmen extra strength when they devour him.

Brace yourselves for this gruesome ritual of Blood & Bones that will turn your stomachs.

Zombie Laser Tag

https://www.facebook.com/ResortsWorldatSentosa/videos/1591080707665231/

Do you have what it takes to survive the zombie apocalypse?

Back by popular demand since it’s debut last year, Zombie Laser Tag returns with an arena double the size. Each team of eight participants will work together for one mission: to fend off and “kill” zombies in infested areas.

Expect more gruesome zombies, greater obstacles and more action, all in the company of a drill sergeant who will lead the way to ensure everyone gets out alive.

The Zombie Laser Tag experience is available at an additional S$38 per participant.

Get Your Scare On

Standard event tickets are available at S$58 (non-peak) and S$68 (peak) each.

If you want more out of your HHN experience, fans can purchase an R.I.P. Tour that includes event admission, a guide who will share insider stories and escort fans to the various experiences, VIP access to haunted houses, private meet-and-greet sessions with creepy characters and more.

Slurp 11 Different Ramen While Enjoying J-Pop And An Eating Competition This Weekend

ramen revolution

Whenever I’m having a bad day, one of the few things I find comfort in, is a hot bowl of ramen.

Singapore is no stranger to ramen establishments, with many dotting the island, serving up bowls of comforting noodle soup.

This weekend, Singapore’s largest and only ramen event, Ramen Revolution returns for its 2nd edition!

The Revolution Returns

This year’s Ramen Revolution will be bigger and better than last year’s, with an extensive event lineup spanning the weekend, taking place at Resorts World Sentosa, The Forum B1!

[caption id="attachment_36163" align="aligncenter" width="679"]ramen revolution Image Credit: Ramen Revolution[/caption]

Some of the participating ramen stores include local favourites like Kanshoku Ramen, who will be presenting their best-selling Truffle Ramen, and Hokkaido Ramen Santouka with their event-exclusive Tantanmen – made with their signature shio base, sesame paste, and chilli oil for that spicy kick.

[caption id="attachment_36166" align="aligncenter" width="960"]ramen revolution Image Credit: Ramen Revolution[/caption] [caption id="attachment_36164" align="aligncenter" width="960"]ramen revolution Image Credit: Ramen Revolution[/caption]

Other ramen stores who will be offering event-exclusive ramen include Ramen Bar Suzuki with their Extreme Black Tonkotsu Ramen, Kajiken Singapore with their Okinawa Mazesoba, and Men Men Tei with their Jiro Style Aburi Chashu Ramen.

On top of being able to try all these exclusive ramen, you get to vote for your favourite ramen store! If the ramen store you voted for wins the most votes, you stand a chance to be one of 10 lucky winners to walk away with Crayon Shinchan collectibles!

[caption id="attachment_36168" align="aligncenter" width="678"]ramen revolution Image Credit: Ramen Revolution[/caption]

That’s not all that will be happening at the Ramen Revolution 2018. There will also be JPOP performances by various JPOP cover girl groups such as Natsuiro Party and Tokimeki JUMP.

For those of you who are intrigued by eating competitions, we have good news.

There’s the Food Fight, a speed eating competition, organised by Singapore’s very own Food League SG. Participants will have to finish a bowl of ramen and 8 gyozas in the fastest time. The fastest 6 will qualify for the finals on Sunday.

[caption id="attachment_36173" align="aligncenter" width="768"]ramen revolution Image Credit: Ramen Revolution[/caption]

Food League SG’s own competitive eater, Zermatt Neo, will also be there to demonstrate his ability at Capacity Eating (eating a large amount of food in the time allocated).

Why Book A Hotel Room When You Can Party On A Yacht For The Same Price?

Boat parties have long been an activity favoured by the high SES demographic.

There’s something about being on the ‘high’ SES (read: seas) that makes a party appear more lavish than it seems. Is it the sun or the sea breeze?

But that’s beside the point. Did you know that you can now rent a yacht for the same price as booking a lavish hotel suite?

However, there are a few problems with the current process of renting a yacht in Singapore.

Firstly, finding a yacht owner who is willing to rent their yacht. The current process is to trawl forums or find a yacht owner by word of mouth.

Next is finding one that suits your budget and occasion.

This tiresome process is time-consuming and might ultimately come to naught in the end.

This is where Yachtly comes in.

Yachtly is Singapore’s first yacht rental platform perfect for a wide range of occasions and budgets.

It allows you to take your parties and special events out to sea, all while making the process of booking a yacht seamless and effortless.

Sailing Yachtly On The High Seas

I have to admit I’m a bit of a “suaku”. I’ve never been on a yacht in my life unless you count the Tekong ‘Penguin’ Ferry. Never thought the first time I board one will be for an office yacht party.

We boarded the yacht, a gorgeous Leopard 51 Power Catamaran, at One Degree 15 Marina.

The first thing I noticed was the food.

Stacked trays of beehoon, fried rice, chicken wings, stir fried vegetables and samosas on the table at the back of the yacht.

Apparently, Yachtly has partnered with Halal-certified catering companies such as Neo Group and EZBBQ to provide either cooked food or barbecue food.

And that’s not all, some of the yachts might even provide complimentary BBQ services or BBQ rentals at a nominal fee.

You can also choose to bring your own food and alcohol on board. They even have a small fridge and microwave for you to store and heat up your food!

Just take special care and dispose your rubbish properly and NOT in the sea.

Now, being the “suaku” that I am, I scrambled up to the top deck and heaved a sigh of relief. It was better than I expected – breezy, spacious and scenic.

After the captain laid the ground rules on board the yacht (No littering, no food, drinks, and wet people in the cabin etc.), we set sail out of the Marina and onto the high seas!

The water might be choppier on certain days outside of the Marina so ALWAYS follow the safety rules on board the yacht.

So away we sailed towards Lazarus Island and dropped anchor within the cove, safely tucked away behind the island where the big scary waves can’t rock this yacht.

Armed with a large unicorn float and the inflatable slide on board, one by one we jumped in.

Not me. I was lying on the upper deck watching the sun set and the clouds go by.

If you’re wondering where the girls showered and changed, the yacht has 2 decent-sized bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

When the sun set, we had dinner and we heard a shriek. Someone found the karaoke machine in the cabin.

The rest of the night’s activities comprised mainly of singing. Some in the cabin with the karaoke machine, and most of us on the upper deck with the acoustic guitar.

As we sang the night away, our yacht set sail towards Marina Bay Sands for a glorious view of the Singapore city skyline before looping back to One Degree 15 Marina.

Book Your Own Yacht, Airbnb-Style
