No Plastic Bags Provided: BYOB When You Shop At This Zero Waste Store In Jurong Point

If you haven’t already noticed, being eco-friendly is quite the rage as of late (as it should be). From fast food chains banning plastic straws to encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags for their grocery shopping, efforts to reduce waste created by single-use plastics are being increasingly adopted in Singapore.

In efforts to save our earth one plastic at a time we first saw the opening of Unpackt back in April – the first zero-waste grocery store in Singapore.

Now, we have Reprovisions – a newly opened zero-waste bulk store in Jurong Point.

Bring Your Own Bags

According to the Singapore Environment Council, we’re still producing a massive amount of plastic waste – 815,200 tonnes last year to be specific. However it’s great to see that movements to reduce our reliance on single-use plastic are gaining traction here too.

Recently opened in Jurong Point (11 Oct), customers are expected to bring their own reusable package to bag their food items and sundries.

Reprovisions mainly sells healthy fare such as nuts and dried fruits as well as staples like pasta and spice blends from Anthony The Spicemaker.

Adopting the weigh-and-pay concept, customers you will have to weigh your containers, jars or bottles on a weighing scale provided so that the weight can be noted down and excluded from your total bill.

Here are some of the items you can expect from Reprovisions:

Spice mixes from local spice shop Anthony the Spice Maker going between S$5.40 to S$6.30. From basics such as ground turmeric and ginger to mixes such as tandoori and black pepper crab, you can just buy what you need!

They also carry pasta from popular Italian brand Barilla going for $0.46 per 100 grams. A box of Barilla spaghetti from the usual supermarkets would cost about $2.55 for 500g.

And also 6 different types of rice for as low as $0.25 per 100g.

If you’re looking for something sweet, Reprovisions carries an assortment of liquorice flavours such as sour watermelon, sour rainbow and sweet bubblegum going for $3.50 per strip.

How To Purchase

Customers who bring their own packaging will have to weigh their empty containers before filling it with their desired items. As you go about your shopping, write down the product codes before dispensing or scooping the products you want.

Reprovisions also provides kraft bags and reusable jars in case you don’t have your own container on hand.

This encourages customers to head down with a “shopping list” in mind so as to curb impulse purchases and reduce waste.

Reprovisions is an amazing social enterprise that can hopefully move Singaporeans away from plastic wastage and being more eco-friendly.

The man with mesmerising vocals and soulful crooner, much has been said to describe Charlie Lim.

This seven-track album features Charlie experimenting with electronica while at the same time incorporating the familiar tunes that he is known for. This album features guest appearances by .gif’s Weish and up-and-coming rappers, Fariz Jabba and Yung Raja.

Along with Charlie’s album release, his label Universal Music Singapore has revealed an upcoming concert this December – his biggest hometown show to date.

Ending the year with a bang, Charlie will be performing at The Star Theatre which has hosted the likes of Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Bon Iver in the past. He will be joined by the aforementioned album guests along with backing vocals from established performers Vanessa Fernandez (Vandetta, Octover) and Eugenia Yip (The Steve McQueens, Riot !n Magenta).

Take A Walk In The Visually Impaired’s Shoes At Dialogue In The Dark – Free Admission On Oct 6

There’s a lot of things that we take for granted in life, and our eyesight might be the biggest offender in that respect.

Think about it — we stare at a computer the entire day at school/work, squint at the tiny text on our phones on the commute back home, and then kick back by watching YouTube on yet another screen with little regard to what it’s doing to our eyes in the long run.

What we don’t realise (or try not to think about, at least) is that some people don’t have access to this seemingly basic privilege, and Dialogue In The Dark is giving you the chance to take a literal walk in their shoes.

For the uninitiated, Dialogue In The Dark is a social initiative that allows you to experience the life of a visually impaired person.

Led by guides who are visually impaired themselves, you’ll be taken through specially designed rooms that are shrouded in darkness, and learn how they perform everyday tasks walking in the park and visiting a cafe.

It’s a sobering experience, to say the least, and one that is sure to make you appreciate life a little more.

Now, we’re fully aware that Dialogue In The Dark isn’t exactly a new concept (the Singapore branch has been opened since 2009), but we’re writing this because now could the best time to try it.

Tickets for this experience usually cost $15 and $25 for students and adults respectively, but as part of the Tedx Pickering Street Adventures series of events, you can attend a session on the 6th of October completely free (you’ll need to pay $2 deposit, but it’ll be refunded at the door).

We’re pretty sure that there’s limited slots and they’ll be snatched up quick on account of being…y’know, free, so head over to Peatix now to secure a place.

Missing Bangkok? Head To Soi 19 To Get Your Thai Wanton Mee Fix For Just $4 A Bowl

When it comes to Thai food, I order the same three things every time — green curry, basil chicken and an omelette.

Any self-respecting chef serving Thai grub will have no problem cooking these classic dishes, and they’re so tasty and reliable that i’ve never really seen the need to try anything else.

In a way, this “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset has stunted my knowledge of Thai cuisine, so when I was told that I’d be eating Thai Wanton Mee I honestly thought that it was some kind of Southeast Asian fusion dish.

Turns out Thai wanton mee is actually pretty similar to Singapore’s, but prepared in a different style. Same same but different, basically.

For the uninitiated (I can’t be the only one…right?), the main difference between “regular” wanton mee and the Thai version is the absence of any sauce, resulting in a drier dish that places a heavier reliance on the noodles for flavour. The ingredients remain mostly the same though, with the inclusion of char siew, vegetables, and of course, wantons.

Bang(kok) For Your Buck

When it comes to eating Thai wanton mee in Singapore, there’s only one name that you need to know: Soi 19.

Named after the street that houses the famous SabX2 Wanton Mee in Bangkok, founder Ng Sing Chow set up his first outlet in Ang Mo Kio back in 2012, and has since opened two more outlets in Jurong and Kovan that see long queues every day.

This isn’t a case of culinary appropriation either. Ng — who previously worked in the clothing industry and had zero f&b experience — actually learned his recipe from his god brother in Thailand, and painstakingly tried 20 noodle varieties before finding one with the right texture.

His efforts have certainly paid off, because the noodles are without a doubt the star of the show here. Despite having no sauce, they’re infused with a rich, eggy flavour, and have a bouncy, al dente texture that makes it effortless to chew on. I seriously think I could’ve eaten a bowl of them without the ingredients.

That’s not to say that the ingredients aren’t good, though. The char siew used here is less sweet than what you’d usually expect — a deliberate choice, according to Ng’s daughter Claire — and it balances out the noodles’ strong taste. The larger bowls also include a few slices of fish sausage, which strangely enough taste like bak kwa (I’m still trying to figure that one out myself).

And then there’s the crispy pork lard, which is made in-house on a daily basis. The Ang Mo Kio outlet is famous for offering a free flow of these crispy bites, but this unfortunately isn’t available at the other two stores in the interest of cost. It’s a shame, considering that a small amount already adds yet another dimension of savoury goodness to an already-varied taste.

And what would a wanton mee be without…well, good wantons? The dish includes both the crispy and soft variety, and they’re quite literally bursting with flavour thanks to a generous amount of minced meat within each of them. Throw in some juicy greens for good measure, and you have an extremely hearty and satisfying meal for as low as $4.

You’d think that a wanton mee with no sauce would be less flavourful than its gravy-laden counterpart, but Soi 19 has converted my wanton allegiance to team Thai.

Earlier in our interview, Claire tells me that the goal was not to produce an exact replica of Thai wanton mee, but instead use it as an inspiration to create a version that appealed to the local palate (“60% Thai, 40% Singaporean”, she says).

Having tried a bowl for myself, I can safely say that they’ve succeeded.

Legendary Heavy Metal Band Judas Priest To Bring Some ‘Firepower’ To S’pore On December 4

For all you headbangers, one of the most legendary heavy metal acts ever, Judas Priest, is bringing their ‘Firepower‘ tour to Singapore on 4 December 2018!

The British heavy metal legends will be performing at ZEPP@BIGBOX.

The last time the band performed in Singapore was back in 2013 together with Lamb of God.

AJ Hackett houses Singapore’s first and only bungy tower, standing 50m above the ground on Sentosa’s Siloso Beach.

There are 3 activities for you to choose from to get your adrenaline pumping. Drop and swoop on the Giant Swing with your family members or test your will and conquer your acrophobia on the 47m Bungy Jump.

The site also features the Skybridge, a 40m walkway with see-through sections. On it, is the Paulaner Sundowner Deck, which has the best sunset views in Siloso.

8. Kayak/Canoe At Kallang Basin

If you’ve always wanted to try your hands at kayaking, canoeing or pedal boating, here’s your chance to do so.

Enter our very own Water Sports Centre. Catered for public and community use as well as for national athlete training, the Water Sports Centre offers a variety of canoes, kayaks and pedal boats for rent.

Pedal boats are ideal for beginners and children, while experienced kayakers and canoers can challenge the 500m long Regatta course.

9. Cable Skiing at Wake Park

Singapore Wake Park is the country’s only cable-ski park built in a lagoon at Singapore East Coast Park.

Promising all level of fun and challenges, the park features three cable-systems. One full sized cable system for the experienced riders and two straight-line system for the complete novice and intermediate riders from as young as six years old.

Instead of the traditional motorboat tow system, you hang on to to a handle suspended from a motorised cable high up in the air; they can control the speed and you can do huge loops around the lagoon – they even have an obstacle course!

Abseiling In The Heartlands

Abseiling off a block of HDB flats is a real thing in Singapore. Gone were those days where bungee jumping and bar top dancing weren’t allowed in Singapore as authorities, who for years have kept a tight rein on fun, show gradual signs of loosening up.

Not for the faint hearted, this newfangled activity is organised by the abseiling interest group at West Coast CC Youth Club.

They folks at West Coast CC Youth Club are bringing abseiling to the residents instead of you coming to them. The abseiling activities are held every second Sunday of the month. Best part, you get to abseil off a different HDB block every month.

This activity is completely safe and fun for all ages. If you’re deathly afraid of heights, rest assured that you’ll be in the safe hands of professionals.

I used to avoid thrift shop because I never understood why anyone would want to buy pre-owned items. After all, the thrill of shopping comes from obtaining new stuff.

Something Old, Something New thrift shop started back in 1997, founded by 2 volunteers at the Singapore Anglican Community Services, Ms Anna Tsang and Ms Felicia Teo.

You can find a ton of apparel, from clothes, shoes and bags and many more.

If you’re lucky, you might even find some items from brands like adidas.
