Sephora Opens At Causeway Point On 21 Sep – First 100 In Line To Get $100 Gift Vouchers

Time and time again, Woodlands has always been the butt of all jokes.
All through life, they’ve battled jokes about “being in Malaysia” and lived day to day standing in the train until it reaches their stop (because weirdly, everyone gets off at Woodlands). Yet, you never hear them complaining about their daily struggles.
Well, their resilience is about to pay off. In an unprecedented move, Sephora Singapore has announced the opening of a new outlet at Causeway Point on 21 September 2018.
[caption id="attachment_37310" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]
Now all you Woodlanders got something to be proud of again.
It’s about time we make Woodlands cool again.
Beauty Junkies Rejoice
The outlet marks the first Sephora in the North. Which means north siders no longer have to travel all the way to ION Orchard to restock their beauty supplies.
This outlet will stock the beauty retailer’s full selection of of beauty brands: Too Faced, Fenty Beauty, the newly released Huda Beauty and more!
[caption id="attachment_37313" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]
And on the day of their opening from 12pm, Sephora will be giving away $100 Gift Vouchers to the first 100 in line, as will the first 50 Gold Card Members in the VIP Priority queue.
Here’s how you can get the vouchers:
[caption id="attachment_37312" align="aligncenter" width="718"]
- Make sure you are the first 100 people queuing at the launch of Sephora Causeway Point on 21 September 2018
- At 11am, Sephora promotional team members will be giving out a Sephora branded wrist brand, numbered 1 to 100
- Each person is strictly entitled to one gift voucher and one transaction with aforementioned voucher
We do recommend heading down way before 11am, because let’s be real. People will start queuing once Causeway Point opens.
If you don’t fancy the idea of waiting in line, the next 100 in queue (No. 101 – 200) will receive a $30 Gift Voucher, whereas the remaining 250 in-line (No. 201 to 450) will receive a Goodie Bag.
All Sephora Gold Card Members will also enjoy an exclusive priority queue from 12pm to 2pm on the day itself.
Beauty junkies can also look forward to a street party weekend. From 21 – 23 September 2018, the atrium of Causeway Point will be turned into a beauty haven of makeup and skincare booths, beauty workshops, and an all-you-can-grab beauty ball pit.

#LoveWins This October With 6 LGBT-Centric Films At Golden Village’s Love & Pride Film Festival

There’s been a lot of discussion about LGBT rights in Singapore lately, and considering how complex the topic is it looks like that conversation will continue for the foreseeable future.
As is the case with most hot-button issues, sides are going to be taken, and it’s pretty clear where Golden Village stands. For the past nine years, the cinema chain has proudly played host to the Love & Pride Film Festival, a screening of LGBT-focused films curated by the Singapore Film Society.
[caption id="attachment_37272" align="alignnone" width="1500"]
As one of Golden Village’s most popular events (you don’t do something for nine straight years if it’s not in demand), it’s no surprise that the festival will return for its 10th edition this October, showcasing six independent films from all around the world over nine days.
Love Is Love
This year’s selection revolves around the theme of Acceptance, and seeks to resonate with not just the LGBT community, but straight audiences as well.
[caption id="attachment_37275" align="alignnone" width="2048"]
The festival will open with Of Love And Law, an award-winning documentary that follows two lovers who run Japan’s only LGBT law firm and the discrimination they and their clients face. After the screening, there’ll also be a 30-minute Skype Q&A with director Hikaru Toda, which for film enthusiasts will be worth the price of admission alone.
Another must-watch is The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance film festival. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and based on the 2012 novel of the same name, this coming-of-age film shines a light on the controversial practice of conversion therapy and its “de-gaying” methods.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toXBb638n2Y]Other films include include Sorry Angel (France), The Heiresses (Paraguay), I Miss You When I See You (Hong Kong) and Alifu, The Prince/ss (Taiwan).
For your easy reference, here’s the complete festival schedule (all films are rated R21, btw):
Thursday, 4th October — Of Love And Law (Great World City, 7:30pm)
Friday, 5th October — Sorry Angel (Great World City, 7pm)
Saturday, 6th October — The Heiresses (Great Word City, 2pm), The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Great World City, 4pm)

Monday, 8th October — Of Love And Law (VivoCity, 7:30pm)
Tuesday, 9th October — Sorry Angel (VivoCity, 7pm)
Wednesday, 10th October — The Heiresses (VivoCity, 7pm)
Thursday, 11th October — I Miss You When I See You (VivoCity, 7:30pm)
Friday, 12th October — The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Great World City, 7:30pm)
Tickets for opening night are going at $23 and $25 for GV movie club members and the public respectively, while the other screenings are priced at $10 and $13.
You can get your tickets from 20th September onwards at Golden Village Cinemas, their website or the iGV app, so mark your calendars to avoid disappointment.

$3,000 Is Up For Grabs At BeLive’s In-App Trivia Game – Here Are 3 Hacks To Help You Win

If you’ve played HQ Trivia, the viral app that lets their users participate in a live trivia game, you’ve probably wondered: “Is there a way to cheat the system?”
Now Singapore has their own version of HQ Trivia as well. With the success of its first live trivia gameshow earlier in February, BeLive has started to roll out daily live trivia gameshow at 9pm since 14 March. It has been renamed as “Master Brain” and users can win up to S$1,000 a day!
There are a total of 10 questions for you to answer and you only have 10 seconds to pick the right option. Get one wrong and you’re out of the game.
Winners get to split the cash prize of the day. However, if there are no winners, the money rolls over to the next day.
[caption id="attachment_37262" align="aligncenter" width="1920"]

It’s important to note that this isn’t a foolproof strategy. Firstly, this tactic works best with straightforward questions that lend themselves well to searches.
The trick is not to ask the exact question but rather focus on the keywords and pray to the Google Gods that their powerful search engine will surface the needed information.
Is cheating at Master Brain through a voice google search unethical? Maybe. Certainly it was something their game designers anticipated and the time limit alone suggests that they’re trying to make it hard to do.
Two Brains Are Better Than One
You might think it’s smooth sailing as you breeze through the first few rounds but the majority of players get booted around the sixth or seventh round.
[caption id="attachment_37263" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]
Outsmarting the game by frantically Googling the answers to your questions in hopes that you’ll get the correct answer under 10 seconds is impractical at best. So the next best thing you can do is to gather a group of friends and pray that someone in your group knows the answer to the questions.
Let’s face it, even if you win, you’re most likely only going to win a fraction of the jackpot, so why not increase your chances by divvying that slice up just a lil more.
Just be sure that when everyone is huddling at 9pm, everyone else is playing on their own device so you can submit different answers on questions everyone is iffy on. You’ll stand a better chance at making it all the way to the last round.
Earn Your Revives
Whenever you invite a friend to play Master Brain, you earn a “Revive”, which allows you to continue playing even when you get a question wrong.
[caption id="attachment_37242" align="aligncenter" width="1318"]
This Saturday, 15 September, Master Brain will be hosting their biggest event yet. From 6 – 10pm at Scape, fans of this game can come together to play Master Brain.
[caption id="attachment_37264" align="aligncenter" width="1536"] Image Credit: Scape[/caption]
If playing amongst your group of friends is stressful enough, imagine playing with at least 2,000 other strangers at Scape. It’ll probably be the most intense game in the history of Master Brain.
Before the game starts at 9pm, complete these Quest Cards which will give you an edge for the Master Brain game. All you have to do is collect stickers along with hints for the $3,000 Master Brain game from participating booths at the event.
[caption id="attachment_37265" align="aligncenter" width="1316"]
There are 5 stickers to be collected and the completed card can be used for the Lucky Draw ($1,000 Scoot Voucher) and a redemption of a Revive.
The Master Brain game will be hosted by 2 of the most popular emcees on the BeLive app, Amos Ngeow (@amosngeow) and Lee Byung Jun (@junn0215)!
[caption id="attachment_37266" align="aligncenter" width="1920"]
If you’re looking forward to earning extra cash fast, join in on the biggest Master Brain game yet.
Who knows, with the combination of our hacks, your knowledge and luck might just pay off this weekend!

An Oldie But A Goodie: Canteen 398 At Seletar Is Possibly The Longest Surviving Canteen In S’pore

Seletar has changed drastically over the years as the authorities cleared the old RAF airbase and colonial architecture and transformed the space into an aerospace hub.
Located along Piccadilly Road in Seletar, this kampong style canteen dates back to the 1960s and still feels like it.
The canteen served mainly British military personnel of RAF Seletar followed by local military personnel when the camp was handed over to SAF after the British withdrawal in 1971.
Yet at this intense transformation of Seletar, a couple of things still brings you back to what Seletar was. Canteen 398 has been sitting on the chopping board for development since 2012 as Seletar is being developed into an aerospace hub.
[caption id="attachment_37223" align="aligncenter" width="4032"]
A Disappearing Piece Of History
This canteen is a piece of vanishing history of Singapore. Situated in the vicinity of an army camp, Seletar Camp, Canteen 398 is open to public and accessible by car and bus.
Time and time again, I kept reminding myself to visit Canteen 398 and boy I’m glad I finally did.
At a glance, you won’t be able to guess that it’s a functioning canteen. That was until, William, owner of Canteen 398 waved his arms and signalled to me that there were more seats inside.
[caption id="attachment_37219" align="aligncenter" width="4032"]
The canteen is a humble looking structure, serving the workers around the area as well as military personnel from Seletar Camp.
Stepping into Canteen 398 felt like I was being transported into another dimension. It was as though time stood still and I was back in the 1960s.
It was hot out so I quickly ordered my Milo Peng and made a beeline for the seats.
The interior was something straight out of the 1990s when solid wooden top table and red stackable chairs are still widely used in coffeeshops. The old school mosaic tiles flooring and chipped paint stands as a testament to its age.
[caption id="attachment_37220" align="aligncenter" width="4032"]
William shared with us that he took over his brother’s business and now runs Canteen 398 with his wife and sister in law.
“I’ve been working here even before I enter army. I’m 70 now. You count lah how many years I work here already,” William laughed.
He mentioned that he wakes up at 4am everyday and takes a bus from Yishun to get to Canteen 398 and you’ll see him mingling and laughing with his regulars.
[caption id="attachment_37225" align="aligncenter" width="500"]
“This place ah, second home to me already. I know everyone that comes to my canteen,” William added.
Even at a warm afternoon at 12pm, I felt a sense of serenity while I was sipping on my Milo Peng as workers around the area streamed in and out to get their lunch fix.
Canteen 398 only has three stalls. A drink stall managed by William’s wife. A Malay stall selling Nasi Padang which has been around for 20 years and a Chinese stall selling Cai Fan which has been around for 10 years.
[caption id="attachment_37224" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]

Her food definitely did not disappoint as I wiped my plate clean in under 5 minutes.
Despite having gone through a major damage in 2015 caused by a fallen tree, Canteen 398 has recovered and it seems like nothing ever happened to this humble looking structure.
Canteen 398 is like another world on its own, going on with what they have been doing since the 1960s, while Singapore continued to change outside.
[caption id="attachment_37222" align="aligncenter" width="4032"]
Coming to this canteen gave me a sense of closeness to this place although it was only my first visit. I was not born in the 1960s but this canteen offers a glimpse of Singapore’s humble past when things were not as perfect and comfortable as today.
The experience at Canteen 398 is truly one of a kind in Singapore.
“Come again this Saturday okay!” William smiled and waved as we parted ways.

NP & NYP’s Iconic Sandwich Shop Is No Longer On Campus, But You Can Find It At ION Orchard Instead

If you’re a former or current student at NP or NYP, then you’ll be familiar with Splash n Decker or “that sandwich shop”.
It’s been 2 years since I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and till today I still remember the sandwiches from Splash n Decker. Their simple yet delicious sandwiches got us through morning lectures or for a quick go-to when the school canteens got too crowded.
Sadly, both branches have since closed down – the NYP joint closed years ago, while the loss of NP’s branch was more recent on June 1.

That Xtra Sandwich
Die hard fans of Splash n Decker will be pleased to know that the brand has moved on to bigger things such as opening up shop at ION Orchard’s Basement. Which is a major upgrade from NP and NYP combined.
[caption id="attachment_37210" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]
Owned by the Four Leaves brand, Splash n Decker now goes by the name Sandwich Lab. The ION Orchard store now sports a new sleek and clean exterior – which is a stark contrast from their previous old school bakery vibe.
[caption id="attachment_37211" align="aligncenter" width="750"]
If you ask any NYP/NP kid, they’ll highly recommend the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich ($4.80) which comes with a slab of tender teriyaki chicken sandwiched between two buttery toasted bread.
There are at least 10 types of sandwiches you can choose from ranging between $4 – $4.80. They’re not as cheap as it was back during our poly days (it was only $2.90 then) but hey, if it means I get to enjoy the same old sandwiches, they can take all my money.
[caption id="attachment_37212" align="aligncenter" width="1012"]
There are also new additions to the menu such as the Spicy Tuna Croissant ($4) and the Tom Yam Seafood Sandwich ($4.50).
If you miss your poly days, grab your friends and head on down to Sandwich Lab for your sandwich fix!
