As we all know by now, JJ Lin will be performing in Singapore this August for 2 nights – 18 and 19 August 2018.

Try 26 Hawker Dishes For $1 Each At This Carnival In Yishun Park Hawker Centre

For the longest time, Singaporeans have complained about the increasing prices of food and housing.

But for a day in the month of June, Yishun Park Hawker Centre is taking things back to the old days, when food was still cheap, and a crisp $10 note made you seem like a rich man.

What I’m saying is, on 23 June 2018, Yishun Park Hawker Centre will be having a $1 Carnival – Reunion @ YPHC to commemorate and celebrate both traditional and new hawker food.

Old And New Hawker Fare

For ONE DAY ONLY, 26 stallholders in Yishun Park Hawker Centre will be showcasing food from its traditional and young hawkers and you get to try the signature dishes from the participating stalls, for just ONE DOLLAR.

Happening from 11am to 5pm on 23 June 2018, you get to dig into signature hawker dishes such as thosai, prata with curry and prawn noodles. Look out for JJ’s Prawn Noodles, which are known for their rich and complex broth.

Other dishes to look out for include the handmade fishballs from Fishball Story and the smooth Chicken Porridge from Li Fang Congee.

While the traditional hawkers have stood the test of time and are exceptional at what they serve, the new hawkers (we call them hawkerpreneurs) hold their own too, serving up some pretty impressive dishes.

Once again, Ah Tan Wings leads the charge with his Har Cheong Gai (Prawn Paste Chicken).

Ah Lock Tofu serves up fluffy taupok skewers and Nasi Lemak Taliwang brings their addictive spicy Sino-Indo Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang to the table.

Haven’t seen anything you like yet? How about the Lala White Beehoon from XLX Modern Tze Char that boasts some intense umami flavours?

One of Hollywood’s most prominent funny-man, Kevin Hart, will be bringing his “The Kevin Hart Irresponsible Tour” to Singapore!

He will be performing at the Suntec Convention Centre once again on 13 December 2018 for ONE NIGHT ONLY!

This will be the final stop of the world tour, and the ONLY stop in Southeast Asia. (No, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is not included.)

The comedian was last in Singapore back in 2016 for his “What Now” tour.

If you’re not familiar with this name (have you been living under a rock?), you might have seen him recently, acting alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in the 2017 reboot of ‘Jumanji’, as Zoologist Franklin ‘Mouse’ Finbar.

DBS Is Making Banking Effortless Because Really, “Where Got Time?”

Just a week ago, I realised that my debit card was nearing its expiry date.

Immediately, I thought about finding a good time to brave the typically long bank queues and renew it…and then it hit me.

When was the last time that I actually queued at a bank branch?

Not trusting my bad memory, I asked colleagues around me about the last time they queued (or even visited) a bank branch.

“Wow…I really think the last time was 5 years ago, when I went to get my debit card set up. I had a POSB kids account, and I needed to changed it to my current account,” said one.

The others, like myself, couldn’t remember the last time they even visited a bank.

Sure, withdrawing cash from an ATM is still pretty old school, but many bank-related transactions can now be done by starting up your iBanking app.

Take for example the transferring of funds.

I still remember when buying an item from an online shop meant heading down to an ATM, carefully keying in the account number, getting the transaction receipt, taking a photo of the receipt, sending over the photo to the vendor, and waiting for confirmation of payment.

Now, all you need is the recipient’s phone number to make a transfer!

What’s more, you’ll even get the digital receipt sent via SMS to your phone as well.

Checking in on my savings and financial health has also never been easier. I can’t imagine how tedious it might have been a decade ago, when the only way you could check your funds was by updating your passbook!

DBS Bank has just revealed plans to make banking even more convenient for customers, and it’s doing this by going ‘invisible’.

The Very Visible DBS Bank Goes…Invisible?

Just 2 weeks ago, DBS Bank unveiled that it’s ditching the decade-old, well-known tagline “Living, Breathing Asia” for a brand new one.

Said DBS CEO Piyush Gupta during the event, “In the last 10 years, we have successfully established ourselves as a leader in Asia banking. While we remain rooted to Asia, Asia is rapidly changing, like the rest of the world.”

With the ubiquity of the smartphone, the explosion of data and the rise of the sharing economy, customer behaviours are dramatically different from what they were before. Customers want a new kind of banking.

Thus, it wants to evolve from simply being a bank that understands the region it’s in, to being one that reimagines how banking is done and perceived.

And it’s doing so by, ironically, going ‘invisible’.

But how does a bank that serves a few million customers and that’s almost as old as Singapore go ‘invisible’?

Its new ethos, “Live more, Bank less”, is the answer.

Evolving With Singapore And Its Customers

Just like how Singapore has evolved and grown over the years, DBS Bank has similarly followed suit since inception in 1968.

First established by the Singapore Government as The Development Bank of Singapore (yes, that’s where the ‘DBS’ comes from!) to take over industrial financing activities from the Economic Development Board (EDB), it has since grown not just locally, but across various markets in the region as well.

Currently, there are over 280 DBS branches across 18 markets.

Called “NAV Hub”, it is Singapore’s first financial planning centre by a bank which offers free advisory services, with – get this – no financial products being sold.

Targeted at millennials, they launched phase 2 of the initiative just last month – “NAV – Your Financial GPS“, a digital financial advisor that can be found in customers’ DBS/POSB iBanking and digibank apps.

Integrating all customers’ banking transactional activities, users can set budgets and goals, and no expenditure goes unaccounted for – making it the perfect solution for those who aren’t sure about whether or not they’re on the right track – financially-wise.

Not Just Chasing ‘Firsts’

But more than just chasing ‘firsts’, DBS Bank’s main driving force lies in enabling more customers to, like its new tagline, “Live more, Bank less”.

Market On Wheels, while not massive, does offer a good variety of food and drinks.

A Sugar Rush by Cereal Citizen

You might’ve seen them quite recently at Artbox. Cereal Citizen was founded by local blogger and influencer, Bong Qiu Qiu. They’re known for their signature Crododo, which is a quirky little creation of a cross between a croissant and a donut.

Basically, a donut with the texture of a croissant.

Other items on the menu include the Unicorn Cotton Candy that looks almost too good to eat, and the Market On Wheels-exclusive Caramel Popcorn-flavoured Creamy Foam with Fizzy Butterbeer Soda. (What a mouthful.)

Cereal Citizen’s highly instagrammable food might look (almost) too pretty to eat. But if you’re not a big fan of food that’s too saccharine, then you might want to check out the next vendor in the list.

Local Delights at Abracowdabra

Abracowdabra might have a small menu which serves up a few local dishes, but these offerings are not to be scoffed at.

Don’t miss their savoury items such as the Satay, Har Cheong Gai, Tahu Goreng and the Fried Mantou that comes with either chilli crab sauce or condensed milk.

Wash your food down with a large cup of Sugarcane juice or Cendol!

Beef Cubes at Swag Grill Bar

Brought to you by the people from The Swag Social who were also at Artbox recently, the Swag Grill Bar offers grilled Yakiniku Ribeye Beef, Salmon Mentai (OMG), fries, and their signature “HP and Mana” drip bag sodas.

2. Deanna’s Kitchen 

Let’s be real, we kinda get sick of lontong and rendang after a couple of days. So what better way to change things up a by serving your guests the famous prawn noodles from Deanna’s Kitchen.

The Deanna’s Prawns x Clams Mee ($8.50 per pax) comes with 3 different type of noodles, 3 big prawns per pax, 10 – 15 clams per pax, kang kong, bean sprouts and sliced fish cake.

They’ll also throw in complimentary homemade garnishes as well as a full set of disposable wares.

The prawn noodles will be served buffet style. All you need to do is prepare a pot for them to pour the soup into so you can reheat easily. Alternatively, they can lend you the soup warmer and they will return to collect it after your event. How convenient!

For $7, you get Lontong, ayam masak merah, rendang, kuah lodeh, sambal tumis and serunding. Which is basically all you need for a simple Hari Raya gathering.

However if you feel like that won’t be enough, you can discuss with the Dapur Naes team to add more dishes to your package.

Delivery charge is an extra $30 for orders less than $300.

We Mexican’t Believe It — Muchachos Is BACK With A New Outlet In The CBD

Mexican food is one of the few cuisines that just comprises of comfort food. It’s hard to not like Mexican food when everything that goes into it tastes amazing.

Even a bad taco is good. Depending on how sober you are, of course. Like a cold pizza slice. Sounds gross in theory, but not so bad in practice.

One of the places that serves great Mexican food in Singapore, is Muchachos.

I still remember the day I first bit into one of their burritos. It was such a carb-overload, yet at the same time, I couldn’t stop eating it.

However, all good things come to an end.

They closed their doors at Keong Saik street back in March, much to the dismay of their fans, promising that it’s just a temporary closure for a future relocation to the Central Business District.

Imagine my ecstasy when a colleague noticed that the previously deleted Muchachos Facebook page resurfaced with a new address.

That’s right, Muchachos’ new location will be at 182 Cecil Street #01-01 Frasers Tower and it’s finally open today, 26 September 2018!

Now, there’s a new arcade claiming that they’re the biggest arcade in the East side of Singapore.

Introducing Fat Cat Arcade. They recently opened in Bedok’s Djitsun Mall and they’re proudly owning the title of being the “Biggest Arcade In The East”, or as I would like to call it, B.A.I.T.E (The ‘e’ is silent.)

So Far, So Fat

Fat Cat Arcade claims that they have over 100 machines on the arcade floor and their tokens go for as low as $0.16 each!

While I’m not a regular patron at arcades, the games I do go for are the shooters such as Time Crisis, The Walking Dead, and the Nascar racing games. Fat Cat Arcade seems to have more skill-based games than shooters.

Here are some photos of the arcade. Can you spot any games you’re familiar with?

To be fair, the arcade floor is quite expansive, though it’s not as big as Timezone. BUT, they have carpeted floors. So the point goes to them.

Of course, every decent arcade in Singapore has these cursed loose-clawed, money-sucking, token-eating machines and Fat Cat Arcade definitely didn’t forget theirs.

Oh, not forgetting these coin-drop arcade machines too.

Now, after you’ve spent hours upon hours farming and stocking up on your tickets, it’s time to redeem them for some prizes. And Fat Cat Arcade has a pretty decent “redemption shop”.

Actually we’re understating because you can choose from more than 500 items to redeem with your tickets. Also, the place reminds me of Mini-So.

Honestly speaking, Timezone is still bigger with more traditional digital arcade games and they have a bowling alley, bumper cars, an air hockey table.

But if you’re in the East and you’re trying to avoid the ‘Special Event Area’ near Sentosa at the moment, then Fat Cat Arcade is a good alternative.

Also, arcades are a better addiction than casinos. Just saying.

Growing up, my first introduction to the world of Japanese cuisine was at the first Genki Sushi outlet at FORUM The Shopping Mall. It was quite an experience, because the food comes (and goes) on a conveyor belt right next to your table. Don’t even get me started on the tabletop hot water dispenser.

Genki Sushi might have been one of the first sushi restaurants to bring the conveyor belt concept to Singapore, but it has since been adopted by many other sushi restaurants to the point where it has almost become a sushi-specific concept.

Now, this new sushi restaurant in Yishun Town Square combines 2 of the sushi dining concepts we’ve seen before, into 1 sushi restaurant.

Introducing One Sushi.

Home-grown Sushi Restaurant

Their two-tiered conveyor belt features a regular sushi conveyor belt on the bottom, while the top tier is a “track” for “sushi cars” to deliver the sushi that you order à la carte via the iPad.

You know the way your food comes to you at Genki Sushi? In the trains? One Sushi uses “cars” instead. It’s quite fun to see your food zoom towards you.

That’s not all, the sushi conveyor belt allows diners to choose from 50 different yellow-plated sushi at just $1.50 per plate! (That’s Sushi Express’ price OMG)

If you love Ikura (salmon roe), One Sushi’s Ikura Gunkan is permanently available at $1. Another value-for-money item on the menu is the Uni Sushi at just $1.50. $1.50 for Uni (Sea Urchin) is unheard of.

Planning to order from their à la carte menu? Go for the Hamachi Kama ($13.80). One Sushi uses fresh Hamachi Kama from Japan. Hamachi Kama is the collar of Yellowtail fish. Each fish has 2 and it is usually the most fatty part of the fish.

Don’t like fish? (Why are you at a SUSHI restaurant?) Try the Hotate Mentai ($4.80) which sees scallops served in-shell, topped with a generous dollop of mentaiko that’s been blowtorched for that charred savoury finish.

One Sushi looks promising for a new and upcoming sushi restaurant. For the aunties and mothers out there, the green tea and wet tissue are free of charge. Just saying.

Lastly, every month, they will select and feature 1 sushi in the $1 category so be sure to check with the staff!

Catch The LoL Grand Finals At ASEAN’s 1st E-Sports & Music Festival This Weekend

As a millennial, there aren’t many things that surprise me or even catch my attention. But leave it to MTV to be able to find the perfect combination of activities to turn heads and grasp our attention.

From 4 to 5 August, the Singapore Indoor Stadium will host the very first ASEAN E-Sports and Music Festival, Hyperplay.

Organised by MTV and presented by the Ministry of Culture, Community, Youth (MCCY) and National Youth Council, this insane 2-day event will see youths from all 10 countries compete in a strive for glory in the first ASEAN League Of Legends competition.

That’s not all, there will also be a music festival as well as cosplay events happening!

League Of Legends Tournament

One of the biggest components that make Hyperplay is the League Of Legends tournament which sees the best teams in the region pit their skills against each other in a chaotic battle of strategic supremacy and combat skills.

Whether it’s national, regional or international, League Of Legends E-Sports is easily the highest level of competitive play with some of the most active and competitive players and tournaments held in some of the largest stadiums around the world.

The winners of the League Of Legends tournament will receive 6 Razer Blades!

If E-Sports isn’t really your cup of tea, then how about a music festival with a lineup curated by MTV themselves?

The full lineup of artists have not been announced but here’s who we know will be performing at Hyperplay.

Headliners

CL

If you’re any KPOP fan worth your salt, then you’d have heard of the iconic 2NE1, one of the most popular and successful girl groups in South Korea. And the leader of said group is none other than CL.

Since the disbandment of 2NE1, CL has moved on to become a versatile rapper, vocalist, dancer and songwriter and has also managed to break into the US market thanks to her various collaborations with artists such as Skrillex and Diplo, to name a few.

You might have seen her perform at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony. If you missed it, watch it again below.

Afgan

The first time I saw Afgan in person was back in 2015 at Youtube FanFest Singapore.

If you don’t know who he is, the stylish singer is Indonesia’s crooning heartthrob who has won awards across the region, solidifying him as a crowd favourite in Asia.

Slot Machine

Slot Machine is the undisputed king of Thai rock music with nearly 2 decades of experience in the music industry.

The four-man rock band is known for their stirring rock anthems and poignant narratives. They released their first English album back in 2016, further expanding their audience and fanbase.

The Sam Willows

Singapore’s very own pop sensations, The Sam Willows, will be representing the nation at Hyperplay!

Since the formation of the group back in 2012, they have racked up over 20.2 million streams on Spotify and more than 6 million views on their Youtube channel.

The homegrown band has churned hit after hit, from “Take Heart” to “Keep Me Jealous” and “Robot”. They’ve even opened for Little Mix on their world tour stops in Manila and Singapore.

Nick Jonas

If you know the lyrics to “Burnin’ Up” and “Lovebug”, then you’ll be pleased to know that Nick Jonas will be performing on the MTV Spotlight stage at Hyperplay on Sunday, 5th August 2018.

The American singer-songwriter and actor, also known as one-third of the Jonas Brothers, has sold over 17 million albums worldwide and was nominated for the ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys in 2008. 

Nick Jonas released his self-titled debut album in November 2014, featuring the triple-platinum and #1 U.S. radio hit, “Jealous” and the sultry chart-climbing radio single, “Chains”.

Purchase either a one-day or two-day pass across 6 different categories.

One-day passes go from $60 to $129, depending on the day you’re buying for, while Two-day passes go from $108 to $201 depending on the category.

CAT1 and CAT2 ticket holders have the option to purchase an additional Standing Pass. All CAT1 ticket holders will also receive an exclusive Hyperplay loot bundle which includes an A3 poster, keychain, EZ-Link card, and mousepad.
