From Vodka Apple To Acai Berry – 6 Millennial-Approved Mooncakes That Aren’t Lotus Paste

There are a few things that you can count on seeing every Mid-Autumn Festival — Chinatown being popular for a few weeks before fading back into obscurity, gaudy-yet-endearing lanterns being sold in the heartlands (bootleg Spider-Man is a personal favourite), and companies getting into an unofficial competition to create the most unique mooncakes possible.

We know firsthand that not all of these creations hit the mark (*coughOreoMooncakescough*), but here are five that certainly do:

Milo Dinosaur Snowskin Mooncakes By Fullerton Hotel

[caption id="attachment_36988" align="aligncenter" width="960"]Unique Mooncakes (Image Credit: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore)[/caption]

Milo has become so ubiquitous that you can find it in everything from energy bars to ice cream these days, and thanks Fullerton Hotel the chocolate-malt drink has now been immortalised in mooncake form as well.

Wrapped in a soft snowskin exterior (because if you’re going to appeal to the millennials, you might as well go all the way), the filling is comprised of milk lotus seed paste, along with a generous serving of milo “pops” for a little bit of crunch.

We’re not sure where where the “dinosaur” part is, though. Not sprinkling milo powder on these is certainly a missed opportunity, but when it comes to mixing one of our favourite drinks into a traditional snack, we’ll take what we can get.

Acai Berry and Chia Seeds Snow Skin Mooncake by Raffles Hotel Singapore

[caption id="attachment_36989" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Unique Mooncakes (Image Credit: Raffles Hotel Singapore)[/caption]

Acai Bowls have become the new health hotness over the past year, and with the Mid-Autumn Festival rolling around it was only a matter of time before someone made a mooncake version of this superfood.

That “someone” appears to be none other than Raffles Hotel Singapore, who have a track record of releasing unique flavours like Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Feuilletine (2016) and Strawberry Yoghurt and Crunchy White Chocolate (2017). Their latest Acai Berry and Chia Seeds Snow Skin Mooncake might be their healthiest yet, said to be full of anti-oxidants, calcium and vitamin A.

The health factor is turned all the way up to eleven with the inclusion of organic chia seeds and Greek yoghurt, which add even more nutrients that your body probably needs. If you want to indulge in the festivities and feel a little less guilty about it, then these are the ones to get.

Mao Shan Wang Snowskin Mooncakes by Golden Moments

[caption id="attachment_36987" align="aligncenter" width="1772"]UniqueMooncakes (Image Credit: Golden Moments)[/caption]

There are two types of people in this world: people who love durian, and people who don’t.

For the former, these Signature Snowskin Mao Shan Wang Mooncakes by Golden Moments are probably as close as they’ll get to the perfect mooncake. According to their website, the filling consists of nothing but the “purest of luscious Mao Shan Wang durian”, making it more akin to an extremely atas cream puff a than a mooncake (not that we’re complaining, though).

Aesthetics wise, these babies are instagrammable AF too — the use of bamboo charcoal snowskin (which is supposedly healthier) gives it a stylish black exterior, and it’s also sprinkled with edible friggin’ gold for that extra touch of class.

Prestige Collection by Bakerzin

[caption id="attachment_36990" align="aligncenter" width="1080"]Unique Mooncakes (Image Credit: Bakerzin)[/caption]

“You know what’s missing in a mooncake? alcohol”. If that very specific thought has ever crossed your booze-loving mind, then Bakerzin’s Prestige Collection has got you covered.

Whether you’re a fan of the strong stuff or just want a hint of liqueur in your mid-autumn bites, this long-running set has it all — the collection’s four flavours range from Apple Vodka to Butterscotch Baileys, all of which are wrapped in a pastel snowskin exterior.

Each mooncake is also infused with white chocolate truffle ganache, so you don’t have to worry about wincing every time you take a bite (even the biggest of alcoholics have to admit that that don’t drink alcohol for the bitter taste). Throw some lotus seed paste into the mix, and you’ve hit pretty much every point on the flavour spectrum.

Snowskin Collection by Caffe Pralet

[caption id="attachment_37011" align="aligncenter" width="6000"]MooncakePralet (Image Credit: Discover SG)[/caption]

Caffe Pralet are probably best known for their Rice Bowls and Chilli Crab Cheese Fries, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t make a mean mooncake too.

Or should we say mooncakes? With flavours like Red Velvet, Butterscotch and Yuzu Coconut White Chocolate, we’re having a hard time picking a favourite out of their eight flavours. There’s not a trace of lotus seed paste to be found either, instead replacing the filling with modern palate pleasers like cream cheese and crushed cookies.

And did we mention how #aesthetic these bite-sized beauties are? From the gold shine of the Signature Pralet to the ombre effect of the Lychee Rose, we wouldn’t have eaten them if they didn’t taste so damn good.

Crispy Skin Mooncakes by Garden Pastry

[caption id="attachment_36991" align="aligncenter" width="1872"]Unique Mooncakes (Image Credit: Garden Pastry & Cake Pte Ltd)[/caption]

What makes a mooncake, exactly? Well, the folks at Garden Pastry certainly don’t think it’s the skin, because they’ve completely thrown that out the window for their signature Crispy Skin Mooncakes.

Resembling more of a Tau Sar Piah than a mooncake, this unique take completely flips the mooncake-eating experience on its head — rather than your teeth slowly sinking into the skin, the flaky exterior creates a satisfying crunch that’s as messy as it is delicious.

Most of the items in the collection include a sweet yam filling, but the collection also includes D24 Durian and vegetarian variants as well. If you’re feeling even more adventurous, you might also want to try out the Mini Cheesrispy Lotus With Yolk, which throws parmesan and cheddar cheese into the mix.

10 Quirky Mooncakes That Break Tradition With Flavours Like Bubble Tea, Chilli And Salted Egg Yolk

As Mid-Autumn Festival rolls around, it’s once again time to binge on mooncakes!

While we love a good traditional lotus paste mooncake, we have to admit, it’s the novel, intriguingly flavoured mooncakes that tend to grab our attention – and this year, there are plenty of these out there.

Alcoholic mooncakes, ice cream mooncakes, ‘liu sha‘ mooncakes… The list goes on.

Here are some of the most outrageously untraditional mooncakes we could find, and we think you’ll be hard pressed to pick just one to try.

1. Mandarin Orchard – Red Wine Cranberry Paste With Japanese Yuzu and Lemongrass

Alcoholics, now you can even get your buzz from mooncakes!

[caption id="attachment_29486" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mini snow skin mooncakes from Mandarin Orchard[/caption]

Mandarin Orchard‘s range of Mini Snow Skin Mooncakes includes two boozy flavours – Lychee Martini And Chocolate, and Red Wine Cranberry Paste With Japanese Yuzu and Lemongrass.

The Lychee Martini And Chocolate Mooncake releases a burst of crisp, citrusy chocolate into your mouth with every bite, while the Red Wine Cranberry Paste With Japanese Yuzu and Lemongrass Mooncake leaves a lasting impression as each mouthful reveals yet another layer of subtle flavour.

2. Grand Hyatt – Violette & Gin

Ain’t nobody got time for old school mooncakes when there are alcoholic snow skin mooncakes to be eaten.

[caption id="attachment_29501" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Pretty mooncakes in a pretty box (Image Credit: Grand Hyatt Singapore)[/caption]

Grand Hyatt is adding a new creation to their growing list of alcohol infused mooncakes: Violette & Gin, which comes infused with Tanquert No. Ten Gin and a crème de violette liquor for a delicate, floral twist.

Another must-try is the Strawberry-Lime-Tequila Truffle, a fruity yet intense mooncake with a kick. Their snow skin mooncakes are available at $69 for a box of eight.

3. Bakerzin – Butterscotch Baileys Snow Skin

Can a person get drunk on mooncakes? Probably not.

[caption id="attachment_29502" align="aligncenter" width="460"] (Image Credit: Bakerzin)[/caption]

But that’s not going to stop us from trying all the alcoholic mooncakes out there.

Bakerzin‘s Prestige Collection ($56) will make your inner alcoholic rejoice, with four different spirits to try. Each box comes with two pieces each of Apple Vodka Snow SkinButterscotch Baileys Snow SkinCoconut Liqueur Snow Skin, and Latte Kahlua Snow Skin mooncakes. You won’t even know where to start!

4. Old Seng Choong –  Cranberries With Choya

Old Seng Choong may be well-known for its old school bakes and cakes, but head pastry chef, Daniel Tay, definitely knows how to take things up a notch.

5. Shangri-La – Yuzu Bird’s Nest

While it seems like everyone is trying to one up each other in terms of who can come up with the most outrageous, most unexpected mooncake filling, we think Shangri-La‘s ones take the cake.

[caption id="attachment_29504" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (Image Credit: Shangri-La’s latest Mini Snow Skin Eight Treasures ($88) features two new flavours.

The first is the more typical Chocolate Salted Toffee, which comes encased in a layer of crisp milk chocolate – perfect for sweet tooths. The other is a more luxurious and interesting blend of Yuzu Bird’s Nest that is both tangy and sweet. Who knew bird’s nest would go well with a mooncake?

6. The Pine Garden – Pearl Milk Tea Snow Skin

If you love bubble tea and have $17.20 to spare, try The Pine Garden‘s Pearl Milk Tea Snow Skin, which is infused with tea, and comes with bits of chewy boba. Yum!

7. Thye Moh Chan – Chef’s Private XO Recipe

Go old school, but with a twist with Thye Moh Chan‘s traditional Teochew-style mooncakes.

Teochew mooncakes typically see a sweet filling encased in a flaky crust pastry, unlike the baked skin mooncakes we typically see during mooncake festival.

[caption id="attachment_29507" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Thye Moh Chan’s secret recipe with XO sauce[/caption]

They come with various fillings, including an all-new Chef’s Private XO Recipe ($40.80 for four pieces), a Salty Tau Sar With Egg Yolk ($29.80 for four pieces) and the Teochew Mooncake ($18.80 for one piece), which uses a traditional recipe of maltose, citrus strips and five-spice powder.

Although we were at first unsure about how XO sauce would fare in a mooncake, the Chef’s Private XO Recipe completely won our hearts and was a favourite in the office! Unlike most of the mooncakes listed here, these ones lean towards the savoury side, with delicate hints of har cheong (shrimp paste) that is simply addicting.

Thye Moh Chan also has a Mao Shan Wang Durian mooncake ($40.80 for four pieces), which infuses durian and mung bean paste.

8. Cat & The Fiddle – Cream Cheese Mooncakes

It only makes sense for a bakery famous for its cheesecakes to create cheesecake-filled snow skin mooncakes – and they’re actually quite legit.

[caption id="attachment_29510" align="aligncenter" width="497"] Each mooncake comes with an adorable cat embossing (Image Credit: Cat & The Fiddle)[/caption]

The Cow Jumped Over The Moon-cake selection from Cat & The Fiddle features 4 different flavours filled with cream cheese and lotus paste.

The mooncakes come in a Blueberry Cream Cheese and Lotus Paste with White Chocolate and Dried Cranberry Truffle, an Oreo Cream Cheese and Lotus Paste with Dark Chocolate Truffle, a Strawberry Cream Cheese and Lotus Paste with Mint and White Chocolate Martini Truffle, and a Chocolate Cream Cheese and Lotus Paste with Orange Vodka and Dark Chocolate Truffle.

Each flavour has a personality of its own, with some of them even containing hints of alcohol! You can order the mooncakes online, or by phone at 6287 0077.

Fit For A King: You’ll Need These Delectable Desserts To Complete Your Christmas Feast!

After hanging up your hundredth bauble, unwrapping your thousandth present, and exchanging your millionth kiss under the mistletoe, you bet it’s time for something more. If what you’re thinking is what we’re thinking, it’s none other than a Christmas feast.

Be it turkey with all the trimmings, indulgent desserts or spiced tipples, tis’ the season for feasting!

Read on for our choice picks of binge-worthy festive fare.

1. Bakerzin

This festive season, let home-grown Bakerzin tantalise your taste buds, spice up your parties, and keep your guests coming in droves.

We were lucky enough to lay our hands on a few items in their Enchanting White Christmas Takeaway Menu, and it had us wishing Christmas would never end.

Roast Cajun Capon – $36 (approx. 2kg)

Roasted for 1 ½ hours under carefully-calibrated temperatures, marinated overnight and stuffed generously with aromatic herbs and spices – that’s how much goes into preparing each roast.

It was all worth it because the chicken was moist, tender and flavourful. And, it came with crispy golden skin – a big plus.

We dipped pieces of the meat into the refreshing and tangy Chimichurri Sauce, an interesting Argentinian-inspired concoction. Equally tasty was the Christmas Tangy Sauce – an earthy, wholesome sauce made from hours of simmering chicken bones and tomatoes, and infused with red wine.

To round off the dish, we tucked into heaps of sweet roasted carrots cut to bite-sized perfection and moreish mini potatoes.

Yule Love Chocolate Log Cake ($52 – approx. 1.2 kg)

Not for the faint-hearted, don’t mess with this bad boy unless you’re a serious chocolate lover. We’re glad to say that the confection contained more chocolate mousse than cake, with a chocolate-to-cake ratio of approximately 70 to 30.

Rich and decadent, this bittersweet chocolate mousse cake is made from fine Valrhona chocolate, and luxuriously covered with chocolate frosting.

The cake was an overall winner, considering that it nailed the chocolate just right and it was a treat for the eyes. Decorated with adorable mini Santas and crunchy candy canes, we couldn’t say no to it!

Galette des Rois – $40 (approx. 580g)

Add some pizazz to your Christmas party with this rustic Northern French pastry, otherwise known as the King Cake.

At first bite, we noticed how delicate and buttery the puff pastry was. It was considerably tastier and more buttery than most other puff pastries that we’ve tried. After that, the sweet and fragrant scent of the almond frangipane filling hit us. Baked to a golden brown hue, the cake looked as good as it tasted.

What’s more, this dessert contains a fève (porcelain toy figurine)! According to tradition, the lucky person who finds it will be the “king of the day”. Will it be you?

Croquembouche (Available in vanilla custard or Coffee Cream) – $22.80 for 27 pcs (approx. 800g)

A traditional French confection popular at weddings, this sweet pyramid dessert consisted of 27 mini choux pastries, stacked like an awesome Christmas tree.

Freshly-baked daily and glazed with a generous coating of indulgent, homemade butterscotch, this dessert is worth getting a belly for. The delicate and airy choux pastries were filled with rich and smooth coffee cream, which brought the dessert to great heights.

While the choux pastry was fluffy but not the fluffiest, the coffee cream was pretty amazing. Deep and fragrant, the coffee flavour was strong enough to lend the dessert an edge. Popping several of them made us feel like we’d downed a good cuppa, which we absolutely love.

Our ambassador, Vanessa, tried the cake, and here’s what she had to say:

“In lieu of the festive season, I tried The Cat and The Fiddle black forest cake that was such a sensation for my taste buds! Loved the surprise of brandy infused cherries and the soft mousse on the chocolate cake. Unconventional compared to the usual creamy log cakes!”

Strawberry Log Cake

Our ambassador, Stephanie, tried the Strawberry Log Cake, here’s her experience:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNl_YFjDwSo/

“I really liked that the cake was moist and fluffy, and that it wasn’t very sweet, so it wasn’t too rich or overwhelming to have one slice after another. Also there wasn’t a lot of cream used, which I liked, cause it’s not that oily and fattening. ? The strawberries were a little sour, but it was a nice contrast to the sweetness of the cake ??”

Chocolate Brick Log Cake

After a bite of this tasty brick, you’ll probably crack a grin, but not your teeth! The bittersweet cake offered a solid chocolate punch.

A strong player in the texture game, smooth chocolate fudge cream was sandwiched between fluffy layers of dark chocolate sponge, complemented by crisp and flaky puff pastry on both sides of the cake.

Offering an interesting texture contrast, were the crunchy chocolate-covered pearls hidden within the cake

Christmas Gift Box

Asanoya’s Christmas Gift Box makes for a great gift – 1 traditional stollen, 9 pieces of Madeleine, 9 pieces of Christmas cookies and 9 pieces of Yuzu Miso Rusk, we guarantee the recipient of this box will be grinning like a Cheshire cat.

We enjoyed everything! Every bite of the stollen guaranteed fruit bits and it was very addictive. Unlike traditional Madeleines, the ones from Asanoya are green tea flavoured and perfect to go with tea. The Yuzu Miso Rusk was a unique twist – the mishmash of flavours is surprisingly delectable. You get a strong yuzu taste that does not overpower but was the perfect contrast. As for the Christmas cookies, they were crunchy yet smooth but not too dry.

All in all, we couldn’t think of a better Christmas goodie box to gift to friends.
