Ahh Chwee Kueh. Much of a childhood snack, this traditional dish is one that appeals to both the old and the young. How can it not? Freshly steamed rice cake topped with some preserved radish and a dash of chilli, it’s no surprise that this snack is a crowd pleaser.

A simple dish that extraordinarily excites our palates, we list six of our favourite picks!

1. Bedok Chwee Kueh

Bigger and better, Bedok’s chwee kueh is as delectable as the sweet chai poh. Its chilli, on the other hand, effortlessly sends us through the roof every time .

Talk about atas Chwee Kueh. If you’re heading overseas, this might be an opportunity to indulge in some steamed rice cakes.

Granted, KrisFlyer Gold Lounge’s Chwee Kueh is not exactly in the same league as the others’, but we reckon it still has its charm. Besides its fragrance, it’s also relatively less greasy which makes it a healthier alternative.

Back in March, we announced that Ghim Moh Market is back for good. Amongst our top picks is the authentic Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh. Even without the accompaniment of the radish and chilli sauce, the glutinous rice cake is, dare we say, as delicious.

We’ll take hawker centres over food courts any day. But that’s not to say that the latter is not worth visiting. The chwee kueh at TANGS Market, for instance, whilst considerably pricier, do exceed our expectations. Chewy yet appealing, this is the kind of food that gives us a little extra comfort in our lives.

Rejoice foodie! The Ghim Moh market and food court is finally back after a well deserved face lift. Guess what is the best thing about this comeback? Many of the original stalls that have been around since 1970 are back too! Yes, the chwee kueh aunty will still be serving her signature dish.

Remember how stuffy and humid it got when you took a sip of your favourite fish soup during lunch time at the temporary food centre? We can’t promise you a chilly windy lunch but according to stall owners and residents around that area, ventilation has greatly improved. On top of that, the food centre has also been scrubbed clean of years of grease and grime, and a wider walkway so foodies like us can manoeuvre around with ease.
