#LoveWins This October With 6 LGBT-Centric Films At Golden Village’s Love & Pride Film Festival

Love & Pride Film Festival

There’s been a lot of discussion about LGBT rights in Singapore lately, and considering how complex the topic is it looks like that conversation will continue for the foreseeable future.

As is the case with most hot-button issues, sides are going to be taken, and it’s pretty clear where Golden Village stands. For the past nine years, the cinema chain has proudly played host to the Love & Pride Film Festival, a screening of LGBT-focused films curated by the Singapore Film Society.

As one of Golden Village’s most popular events (you don’t do something for nine straight years if it’s not in demand), it’s no surprise that the festival will return for its 10th edition this October, showcasing six independent films from all around the world over nine days.

Love Is Love

This year’s selection revolves around the theme of Acceptance, and seeks to resonate with not just the LGBT community, but straight audiences as well.

The festival will open with Of Love And Law, an award-winning documentary that follows two lovers who run Japan’s only LGBT law firm and the discrimination they and their clients face. After the screening, there’ll also be a 30-minute Skype Q&A with director Hikaru Toda, which for film enthusiasts will be worth the price of admission alone.

Another must-watch is The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance film festival. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and based on the 2012 novel of the same name, this coming-of-age film shines a light on the controversial practice of conversion therapy and its “de-gaying” methods.

Golden Village Cinema Is Bringing Movies Back To Bedok After 10 Years

Golden Village Bedok

While Bedok might be one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Singapore, it’s strange that the area does not have a cinema of its own.

One would have to go to Eunos, Tampines or further to catch a movie. The last movie theatre that served Bedok residents, was the iconic Princess Theatre, which closed 10 years ago.

Today, Golden Village Multiplex, Singapore’ leading cinema exhibitor, has opened its doors at Bedok with a new 576-seater multiplex at DjitSun Mall Bedok.

It’s somewhat serendipitous for the new Golden Village Bedok multiplex to be standing where the Princess Theatre once stood. It’s almost as if the Princess Theatre is passing on the baton to Golden Village.

Bringing Movie Magic To Bedok

This new cineplex will house 6 screens and can seat up to 576 people.

That’s not all. In line with the opening, Golden Village is launching a NEW curry-flavoured gourmet popcorn. This new popcorn is exclusive to Golden Village Bedok and will only be available for the first 3 months after the opening.

Golden Village will also be introducing 3 other popcorn flavours to all its cinemas islandwide – Seaweed Wasabi, Caramel, and Cheese.

If you’re living in Bedok, dry your tears because you no longer have to head to another neighbourhood to catch a movie!

Golden Village Now Equipped With New 3D Sound Tech Which Makes Scary Movies Sound More Surreal!

Earlier last week, I had the chance to attend a media invite* from Golden Village Suntec City to mark the arrival of the revolutionary 3D immersive sound technology, Auro 11.1 by Barco on our shores.

[caption id="attachment_1684" align="aligncenter" width="701"] Credits: www.yourtechreport.com[/caption]

The Auro 11.1 is touted as the most realistic 3D sound experience currently available in the market, so I was pretty excited to have a first-hand experience with it.

The experience was delivered via a sneak preview of Jack Neo’s latest Chinese New Year film, “Long, Long Time Ago”, which was mixed in the new immersive technology at Galaxy Studios Belgium.

So how did the sound system fare?

It was impeccable. It made me feel like I was brought back into 1960s Singapore, which was the time period that the film was set in. Now, you may be feeling skeptical about it but let me explain how it works.

So what’s the difference between Auro 11.1 and the usual 5.1 surround sound system?

Here’s a 6 minute trailer that’s similar to the one we watched on-site about how the sound system works. Of course you wouldn’t be able to get a true feel of it watching it off YouTube, but you’ll get a rough idea.

Basically, the usual 5.1 surround sound makes use of the layout of a horizontal plane and provides sound coming from the front and the back. However, the design is still inadequate because it cannot replicate the depth of the sound accurately.  This makes it unable to fully provide an immersive experience.

On the other hand, the Auro 11.1 is designed to eliminate this flaw by employing a speaker layout that consists of three layers, which includes the coverage of the three axes, width, depth and height to create a 3-Dimensional feel. This creates a much more realistic experience for moviegoers as it mimics the real-life experience that we have while living within our 3-Dimensional world.

In layman’s terms, if you were to listen to a plane flying overhead on 5.1 surround sound (width+depth), you probably wouldn’t be able to make out how high the plane is flying. It wouldn’t even sound like it was flying overhead! But with Auro 11.1(width+depth+height), you can. That is the amazing part of this system.

[caption id="attachment_1683" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Credits: www.btlnews.com[/caption]

With the introduction of this system on our shores, you can finally fully immerse yourself in the world of your favourite movies, as if you were standing there right beside your favourite characters. So far over 125 films have made use of this new technology, and that includes mega blockbusters such as “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” as well as the upcoming “Kung Fu Panda 3” which will be coming very soon to our shores on the 10th of March!

Time to hit the theatres for scary movies, don’t you think? Save me a seat!
