From June 20, Your KFC Drinks Will No Longer Come With Plastic Caps And Straws
Starting 20 June 2018, all 84 KFC restaurants nationwide will stop serving beverages with plastic caps and straws.
It comes as no surprise as there’s been a ramping up of anti-plastic waste measures by huge companies recently.
For example, Deliveroo Singapore pledged to do its part to cut down the use of plastic with the introduction of an “opt-in function” for cutlery on World Environment Day (5 June).
There are also plenty of start ups in Singapore introducing bamboo/metal straws to encourage Singaporeans to ditch the plastic straws and opt for reusable ones instead. Melissa Lam, the Bamboo Straw Girl, sells reusable bamboo straws and other products such as natural soap bars, bamboo fountain pens, and fabric wraps, and strawkeepers.
Ditch The Plastic Straws
In a bid to reduce single-use plastics, KFC will stop serving their drinks with plastic caps and straws as part of their No Straws initiative.
[caption id="attachment_35156" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: NTUC ThisWeek[/caption]Lynette Lee, General Manager of Kentucky Fried Chicken Management Pte Ltd, said: “We acknowledge the strain that single-use plastics put on our environment and are taking steps to do our part in endeavouring a change.
This makes KFC the very first fast food chain in Singapore to ditch single-use plastics. It has been estimated that this move will “save 17.8 metric tons of single-use plastics in a year”.
Since December 2016, KFC Singapore has made efforts to go green by swapping out paper boxes for reusable baskets for dine-in meals. In early 2017, KFC introduced recyclable paper packaging for their breakfast platters in place of foam packaging for their KFC a.m. menu.
These initiatives saw a reduction of close to 2.5 million paper boxes and over 700,000 sets of foam packaging in a span of only 6 months.
KFC Singapore also added that they will continue to review and rollout the use of more biodegradable packaging for their offerings as part of their ongoing eco-conscious efforts.
Good on you KFC, you’re doing it right!

This Chick’s Burning Up
KFC’s Red Hot Szechuan Chicken is like your favourite Red Hot Chicken – but on Szechuan spice steroids.
[caption id="attachment_31603" align="aligncenter" width="470"] Image Credit: KFC[/caption]The chicken is doused in a Szechuan marinade, coated in red hot batter, and then topped with chilli sprinkle for good measure.
As if being KFC’s spiciest chicken isn’t enough, the chicken comes served with a flaming hot sauce. Because we don’t need our digestive system anyway.
[caption id="attachment_31600" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image Credit: KFC[/caption]The Red Hot Szechuan Chicken is $3.50 for a single piece. It also comes in a Red Hot Meal ($8.50) and Red Hot Box ($10.20), and is available from 15 November 2017 – 2 January 2018.
Can’t Take The Heat?
Not sure if you can handle the heat? KFC has just the thing to sooth your burning lips. From 15 – 19 November, with every purchase of the Red Hot Szechuan Chicken, KFC will give you a free KFC milk with the “KFC Milk” packaging.

KFC Just Released A Double Steamed Chicken Burger And We Hope To God They’re Trolling Us
If it’s not already obvious, Singaporeans LOVE their fast food.
Last month, Singaporeans went Nasi Lemak Burger-crazy when McDonald’s released the limited edition burger. In fact, Singaporeans loved it so much that McDonald’s sold out of these local-inspired burgers in less than 2 weeks!
Clearly, we take our fast food very seriously.
The New Burger In Town
Recently, KFC released a teaser image on its Facebook page – the silhouette of a burger.
The image was simply captioned “Are you down for a new version of an all-time favourite?”
Netizens quickly began speculating, and many of them guessed that this signified the return of the all meat, no bun Zinger Double Down Burger.
[caption id="attachment_29127" align="aligncenter" width="540"] Image Credit:What… The… Hell… Right?
Similar, and yet very much unlike the beloved Zinger Double Down Burger, the Double Steamed Chicken Burger comprises two steamed chicken fillets, sauerkraut coleslaw, spicy pickled cucumber and sambal honey sauce.
This news was (understandably) met with fury from fans of KFC, with commenters being quick to remind the fast food chain what the F in its name stood for; “fried” chicken is what KFC is known for, not, well, steamed chicken.
Is KFC Trolling Us All?
Of course, there is a shred hope that this is all just a joke and that KFC is just trolling us all – at least, that’s what we hope is going on here.
What do you guys think? Is this a joke? Is KFC for real? Let us know in the comments!

Take That, McD’s! KFC Strikes Back With Must Try Umakara Chicken!
In what can only be described as “a taste beyond words”, the stage is all set for the new KFC Umakara Chicken. It’s sure to confound your taste buds with tantalising flavours during its limited release from 13 Jul to 5 Aug.
Umami Taste Profile
So here’s the lowdown. We all know about the four widely accepted and recognised taste profiles. Sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Chefs and cooks everywhere craft their dishes based on these four tastes. Mastering the perfect balance of these tastes is the key to creating delicious dishes.
But, do you know that we have a 5th taste Described as ‘moreish savoury’, this savoury taste profile is commonly known to us as ‘umami’. Foods rich in umami components include mushrooms, tomatoes, and cheeses.
Drawing inspiration from this 5th taste, KFC has launched the new KFC Umakara Chicken.
“Juicy, fresh chicken marinated in savoury shoyu and Japanese spices, hand-coated in a spicy, crispy batter, then sprinkled with an umami spice sprinkle”
Umakara Chicken
To precede its official launch, the team at DiscoverSG had the delightful opportunity to attend an exclusive tasting session before its release to the public.
“The addictive lure of umami and the kick of heat from the Japanese spices make for an indescribable flavour combination. It gives you uninhibited taste enjoyment that is truly out of this world!”
Step aside, McDonald’s. This is how you do it.
In comparison to the much maligned Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burger, the KFC Umakara Chicken doesn’t disappoint. After savouring this perfectly crispy chicken, we can confidently proclaim that this is perhaps, the best seasonal release from a fast-food chain we have seen since like, ever!
Deep fried to a delicious golden brown, every bite into the spicy batter contained very satisfying tinges of heat. It was not only tasty, but also addictive. There was a lingering, pleasant smell of the shoyu marinade that remained on our fingers after we were done with our meal. Talk about finger lickin’ good!
Side Dishes
Besides the Umakara Chicken, the meal also came with Crispy Tenders and Shroom Poppers. The Shroom Poppers are potato bites stuffed with mushrooms, vegetables, meatloaf, and onion. The crispy tenders were not much to shout about, and the shroom poppers were a tad underwhelming, to say the least. It was a tad disappointing considering the Umakara Chicken was fantastic.
Verdict
The Umakara Chicken is definitely going to feature in our meals for the next few weeks. You could skip the Crispy Tenders and Shrooms Peppers, and save your tummy for the Umakara Chicken! Do mark your calendar, as it’s only available for limited release from 13 Jul to 5 Aug.
KFC Umakara Chicken Meal, $7.90:
2 pieces Umakara Chicken, 1 regular Whipped Potato, 1 regular Coleslaw and 1 regular SJORA Mango Peach
KFC Umakara Chicken Box, $9.50:
