Take A Magic Carpet Ride – Aladdin The Musical Is Flying To S’pore For Its Only Stop In Asia In 2019

Singapore’s entertainment calendar is perennially packed and musical theatre nerds should be particularly excited with the huge musical productions heading our way in the coming months.

These musicals aren’t just for theatre die-hards – you’re probably already familiar with them in other mediums, whether that be books or films. From Lion King to Beauty and The Beast and even Frozen, it’s not all uncommon for Disney movies to be reimagined for the Broadway stage. But the most beloved of them all is Aladdin.

Shining, Shimmering, Splendid

The Broadway sensation Aladdin The Musical will be premiering its Singapore debut at Marina Bay Sands from 21 July 2019 onwards. The show will run at the Sands Theatre, marking its one and only stop in Asia.

Making its world premiere four years ago at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on 20 March 2014, Aladdin The Musical quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbuster in recent years, welcoming close to 10 million people worldwide.

Based on the 1992 animated movie, the show follows the rebellious but lovable street urchin Aladdin on his journey of discovery, where he encounters the evil sorcerer Jafar, and beautiful, but headstrong, Princess Jasmine. He finds a lost lamp in the Cave of Wonders, which, once rubbed, releases the crowds favourite rugged and humorous Genie.

The cast will be decked out in extra bling – featuring 337 glittering costumes, 161 custom-made pairs of Arabian shoes, 712 different styles of beads 712, and almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals.

Get ready for the experience of a lifetime that the musical has to offer with its breathtaking visuals. The show will also be flying 60 tonnes of automation and staging equipment to Singapore, and 40 tonnes of exotic flying scenery to recreate A Whole New World, such as the fantasy city of Agrabah, the colourful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and his daughter Princess Jasmine, and the legendary Cave Of Wonders.

Featuring all the songs from the classic Academy award winning film, including “Friend like Me”, “A Whole New World” and “Arabian Nights”, prepare to experience the unmissable theatrical magic that is Aladdin.

Aladdin The Musical will run from 21 July 2019 to 11 August 2018 at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands. Tickets are available at SISTIC and www.marinabaysands.com/ticketing, starting at $68.

Award-Winning Musical ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ Returns To S’pore In Apr 2019 – Tickets Start At $75

Phantom Of The Opera

2019 is shaping up to be a good year for theatre lovers in Singapore.

Not only will Matilda the Musical make its Asian debut in Singapore next February, but it’s recently been announced that The Phantom Of The Opera will be making a return to our shores next year as well.

[caption id="attachment_37506" align="alignnone" width="2048"]Phantom Of The Opera Image Credit: The Phantom Of The Opera[/caption]

Broadway’s longest running show was last staged in Singapore five years ago in 2013, and is now set to play at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands from the 24th of April to the 12th of May.

If you aren’t familiar with what The Phantom Of The Opera is all about, here’s what wikipedia has to say:

…its central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Paris Opera House.

Eh, words don’t really do justice to this epic tale of love and tragedy, so here’s a video of how the production looked like when it last came to Singapore:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7klmV1jzvI]

Ah, better.

Tickets are available for pre-sale right now at sistic.com, with prices ranging from $75 to $780 for a VIP box for four (for that price, the phantom better fall in love with us).

There’s also a 15% discount going on today, so it’s probably a good idea to get them sooner than later.

The Quietest Party In Town Turns Two This Weekend At MBS Observation Deck

Silent Disco Feature

Clubbing is a pretty good way to let off some steam after a long week, but it’s kind of a “do it once and you’ve seen it all” kind of activity — step into any club in Singapore and you can expect them to be sticking to the same formula of dim lights, tight crowds and music so loud that it’ll age your eardrums by five years.

Okay, the first two are an unavoidable part of the scene, but if you’re thinking of putting on your dancing shoes this weekend and want to experience something a little different, then Silent Disco Asia’s 2nd Birthday might be just what the DJ ordered.

Not Your Average Night Out

For the uninitiated, here’s a video showing what The Silent Disco is all about:

https://vimeo.com/213617792

For the benefit of those reading this at work / school / public transport, here’s the breakdown: every participant is given a pair of LED headphones, and will listen to music from them instead of being bombarded by some blaring speakers.

Another signature feature of the event is there’ll be not one, not two, but three DJ’s on the decks, and you’ll be able to seamlessly switch to a different genre of music at the touch of a button. These “channels” are colour coded via those LED’s, so it’s easy to find other like-minded people to dance with.

[caption id="attachment_36697" align="alignnone" width="1800"]Silent Disco (Image Credit: Silent Disco Asia)[/caption]

It might look like the biggest gathering of uncoordinated dancers to anyone watching from the outside, but chances are you’ll be having too much fun to notice or care.

Get High, Literally

For their 2nd birthday, it looks like the folks at Silent Disco Asia are pulling out all the stops — the event will take place at none other than the Marina Bay Sands rooftop, transforming the already-stunning observation deck into a 500 capacity dance floor.

And if you end up enjoying yourself a little too much and need a place to recover halfway, don’t worry: a ticket will also grant you admission to Ce La Vi, which — according to that video — is where the crazy rich asians hang out. As far as rest areas go, this is probably as posh as it gets.

[caption id="attachment_36690" align="aligncenter" width="786"]Silent Disco Ce La Vi Her words, not ours.
(Image Credit: South China Morning Post YouTube)[/caption]

Early bird tickets are already sold out, but you can still get in on the festivities for the regular price of $45. Considering that admission to the observation deck alone normally costs $23 and a ticket includes one complimentary drink worth $20, we say that’s a pretty good deal.

It definitely beats queuing up at Zouk again, at least.

Silent Disco Asia 2nd Birthday
Venue: Marina Bay Sands Observation Deck
Date & Time: 25th August 2018, 10pm – 2am
Admission: $45

We can already taste the Ramly burger, kuih tart, kuih bangkit, otah-otah and other delicious snacks.

Why it beats your neighbourhood pasar malam though, is its selection of super instagrammable foods. Think candyfloss burritos, poke bowls, fried durians, rainbow planet ice-cream buns, unicorn tears and more–not to mention the many, many Thai milk tea stalls.

If you’re wondering how these picture perfect foods fared taste-wise, check out our verdict.

Nosh aside, you’ll enjoy colourful installations, free movie screenings, gigs, a pop-up museum and a heritage race as well!

For an afternoon snack, try the fragrant Pork with Gravy, or the subtly sweet Pork with Honey.

For dessert, get the Thai Milk Tea, Green Tea, or go for the popular Taro (with a hidden gingko nut within!) and Pumpkin flavours.

These Cantonese-style pies are handmade and baked fresh daily to ensure they taste great, and they’re all priced at only $2 each!

This newest addition to the themed cafe scene may be the most magical one yet.

The quirky Enchanted Cafe charms at first sight with its beautiful decor, complete with a magical garden and collection of spell books.

Enchanted Cafe[/caption]

But what’s most striking is the presentation of its dishes.

Think: Bright red cherry compote, blackberries and blueberries in a vivid splash against a deep blue plate, sprinkled with seemingly handpicked bits of nuts and leaves. That’s what makes up the tangy, yet sweet Berries Compote French Toast ($14.90).

For something traditional with a twist, there’s the Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90), which is exactly what it sounds like, complete with bits of water chestnut and black garlic sauce made from scratch.

The most instagramable thing here is the Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90), a blue drink that turns glittery purple after an orange liquid is added.

This has to be the most enchanting cafe to open since the Harry Potter Cafe.
