There’s An Underground Music Joint In Bukit Timah That’s So Secret, You’re Driven And Blindfolded There

You’ve got your speakeasies, hidden art galleries and secret museums. Now it’s time to skip the mainstream nightlife venues and go straight to where the coolest parties are at. Taking underground music to a whole new level is The Kave HQ.

This underground watering hole hosts guerilla music performances somewhere in the woods of Bukit Timah, but no one knows the exact address, even its regular party-goers.

Sounds interesting? Here’s what you can expect.

An 80s Inspired Cave

Opened since June this year, getting to Kave HQ involves meeting up with other guests at the gathering point and waiting for an old school Beetle or Kombi van to come pick you up. To ensure absolute secrecy, you’ll be blindfolded the entire journey.

[caption id="attachment_38557" align="aligncenter" width="679"]the kave singapore Image Credit: @thekavehq[/caption]

Don’t worry, you’ll be seated with your best buds if you’re scared of being blindfolded. You can also try sneaking a peek along the ride, but it’s no fun without a little mystery and thrill!

[caption id="attachment_38556" align="aligncenter" width="679"]the kave singapore Image Credit: @thekavehq[/caption]

What lies within might possibly the one of the coolest music joints in Singapore. Meet up with like-minded music enthusiasts and be transported to an 80s-inspired underground music scene featuring bricked walls, cement flooring, exposed pipes, dangling light bulbs, neon-lit signs and vintage furniture.

Kave HQ promises local acts, chill vibes and drinks – because what’s a party without booze? It’s a space for music lovers and musicians to jam with all night long. Their lineup includes local indie bands such as Disco Hue, .gif and resident group The Kavemen among many other artists in Asia’s indie pop scene.

You can also book the space for solemnisations and weddings if you’re looking to tie the knot in an indie setting. Upon confirmation, the space will be decorated with rose garlands and a mini altar – making it the perfect setting to declare your love for one another.

Their next gig is happening on 21st December with a special Christmas-themed set. Come dressed as an elf, reindeer or Santa as a special prize awaits the best dressed of the night. There’ll also be sips and nosh for the good and naughty – think Christmas Tarik cocktails and hearty beef stew!

Party Like It’s The ’80s At This Retro Arcade Bar In Tanjong Pagar

Ah, the 1980s. Whether you were born in the 80s, grew up in the 80s, or never set foot in that infamous decade, hearing the term “1980s” probably makes you think of something.

It was the era of MTV, from which you (or your parents) watched music videos of the likes of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Wham and Barbra Streisand on repeat.

Fashion was weird, colour combinations were the worst, music was over-digitised and commercialism consumed everyone.

Paying homage to the 80s, this arcade bar takes you back to the glory days. It’s throwback everyday at Nineteen80 – the latest bar to celebrate nostalgia with old school arcade games, 80s hits and neon-heavy backdrops.

[caption id="attachment_36736" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Singapore’s latest retro arcade bar, will be sweeping you away with some serious waves of nostalgia. Step through the pink neon-lit entrance and you’ll be greeted by a row of retro arcade video game machines – think Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighters.

[caption id="attachment_36728" align="aligncenter" width="1875"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36729" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

That’s not it.

Strike your best pose and take a selfie amongst the many murals with 80s pop culture references like Bruce Lee and the iconic “1-177155-4” pager code (it spells out “I-MISS-U” on the pager if you didn’t know!).

[caption id="attachment_36732" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_36731" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

Music wise – resident DJs will play a mix of in-house urban beats from the 80s, 90s and 00s. They also host weekly themed nights, including “Miss-Demeanor Ladies’ Night” on Wednesdays, ‘Fight For Your Right’ and ‘Radio Ga Ga’ nights later in the week, for guests to tease their glorious hair and get their groove on.

[caption id="attachment_36734" align="aligncenter" width="898"] Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

There’s no denying the enduring popularity of some of the eras classic cocktails. Staying true to their theme, Nineteen80’s signature cocktails are mostly sweet-tasting – just like the 80s.

Get yourself some modernised classics such as the ‘Ice-T Hustler Remix’ – a Long Island Iced Tea with a hint of cloudy apple, the ‘Super Disco Blend’ – a Blue Lagoon with a yuzu finish, or stick to the true ‘Vodka Ribena’ – a mix of vodka, Ribena and soda, sure to inspire those nostalgic feels.

[caption id="attachment_36733" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]bars singapore Image Credit: Nineteen80 Facebook[/caption]

If you’re planning on throwing a party, Nineteen80 are also open for private bookings! Whether it be a birthday, hens or stag night, corporate party or a brand launch – they’ve got you covered with old school arcade games, nostalgic cocktails and of course your favourite throwback hits.

Looking for a chill night out with friends? Grab your craziest outfits and step into the portal for your fix of nostalgia!

From Alt Rock To Hip-Hop: Here Are 5 Local Acts You Should Check Out At Baybeats 2018

Music lovers rejoice: the 2018 edition of Baybeats is upon us, which means that you can look forward to three days of free performances from some of the best that the local music scene has to offer.

With more than 30 artists set to take the stage this weekend, it can be an understandably daunting task to pick which ones to watch. To help you out, here are five that we think you should totally check out:

Kin Leonn

https://soundcloud.com/kin-leonn/searching_v3

As the founding member of acclaimed electronic band Midst, Kin Leonn has been honing his craft as an ambient musician for years, and his solo material is both a culmination and evolution of those efforts.

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Kin Leonn is a master of creating haunting soundscapes that transport you to a state of pure calm and introspection. His music might not feature lyrics, but the tracks speak volumes on their own.

He’ll be playing two half-hour sets at the Chillout Stage / Esplanade Concourse on Friday at 6:30pm and 8:00pm, and is the perfect act to ease you into the Baybeats mood.

Annette

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmPUpehiwuc

If Annette Lee looks somewhat familiar to you, it’s probably because you recognise her as “Sue Ann” from SGAG (yeah, we’re just as surprised as you).

Don’t let the goofiness of her day job fool you, though — Lee shows a completely different side of herself when she picks up a mic, exuding a confidence we didn’t know she had as she sings her self-written songs “about the human condition”.

Her repertoire ranges from upbeat dance anthems to dark, soulful ballads, and like Kin Leonn she’ll be playing two sets at The Chillout Stage / Esplanade Concourse on Friday at 7:15pm and 8:45pm.

Trust The Chaos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea2K6XrZSPE

If at first you don’t succeed, try again — after being eliminated in the final round of last year’s Baybeats Budding Bands initiative, the alternative rock quintet went on to earn a spot in NOISE Singapore’s music mentorship programme, and will finally be making their Baybeats debut this year.

Inspired by everything from One OK Rock to Avenged Sevenfold, the band’s energetic sound masterfully straddles the line between mainstream and underground. Frontman Li En’s voice in particular is a work of art, chock full of emotion and reminiscent of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington.

Considering the lengths they had to go through to make it here, you can bet that they’ll tear the stage down on Friday at the Powerhouse / Waterfront Carpark at 7:30pm.

Falling Feathers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9abvNJNnUA

Falling Feathers is no stranger to the big stage — having opened for big international acts like Mayday Parade and Before You Exit in recent years, it’s obvious that his Owl City-esque vocals have struck a chord with Singaporeans.

With most of his songs revolving around the universal topic of romance, his tunes are unapologetically pop-inspired — whether its blaring guitar chords or a smooth electronic beat, you’re guaranteed to be tapping your feet throughout.

If you want to feel like a secondary school kid again, you can catch him on Saturday at the Arena / Esplanade Outdoor Theatre at 7:30pm.

Yung Raja x Fariz Jabba

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-SUfLna8Oo

This year’s Baybeats aims to shine a bigger spotlight on Singapore’s hip-hop and rap scene, and the inclusion of Yung Raja and Fariz Jabba in its lineup is definitely a step in the right direction.

Both artists — who also happen to be best friends — have amassed massive followings thanks to a strong social media game, and their signature style of rapping in both English and their mother tongues have helped to further set them apart from the rest.

It’s always a banger when these two come together, so it’s rather fitting that they’ll be closing out Saturday with a late-night performance at the Esplanade Annexe Studio at 11:30pm.

And if you’re not looking to play favourites and want to watch every act (props to you), here’s the full lineup for your reference:
