Continue The National Day Celebrations With Good Makan, Music, And Movies This Weekend

Post National Day Feature

Another National Day might have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean that the celebrations have to stop.

If you’re not ready to put away your red t-shirts and remove Home from your Spotify playlist just yet, here are some events that’ll help you scratch that patriotic itch over the weekend:

Independent Market National Day Fair 2018

Have the recent festivities spurred you to fill your home and / or wardrobe with locally-inspired merchandise? Then Independent Market’s National Day Fair is definitely the place to be.

Featuring wares from an assortment of homegrown brands, you’ll find everything from notebooks to cushion covers — all of which feature local icons such as the Merlion, chilli crab and the famous Toa Payoh dragon playground, to name a few.

This is one of the rare occasions that so many local brands will be in one place at the same time, so you best head down unless you’re cool with scouring the island to find them again.

Films At The Fort

[caption id="attachment_36479" align="aligncenter" width="2048"]Post National Day Films At The Fort Image Credit: Films At The Fort[/caption]

Okay, this one isn’t exactly National Day themed, but paying a little too much for a hipster experience has become so commonplace in Singapore that it could be considered a national pastime.

At $30 a ticket, Films At The Fort isn’t exactly the cheapest date idea, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another event that allows you to watch a classic movie in an open-air setting under the stars. It’s a unique concept for sure, and one you should experience at least once in your life.

Romance Classic The Notebook and sex comedy Blockers will be screening on Saturday and Sunday respectively, so there’s something for everyone. The organisers are also expecting “a strong demand for tickets”, so be sure to get yours quick.

Venue: Fort Canning Park
Date: 11th August 2018 (The Notebook), 12th Aug 2018 (Blockers)

Get Boozy With Fellow Singaporeans While Watching NDP Live At The Projector

ProjectorNDPFeature

The National Day Parade is a quintessential Singaporean event that brings our country together (for a few hours, at least), but we think it’s safe to say that originality isn’t exactly their strong suit.

Yes, there’s bound to be some new offerings — in this year’s case, a 10-minute film directed by Boo Junfeng — but for the most part you can count on seeing mainstays like the Red Lions, marching contingents and costumed primary school kids taking up the majority of the parade’s screen time.

[caption id="attachment_36445" align="aligncenter" width="506"] Fingers crossed for another hero to rise up.

Exciting as these are, there’s a sense of deja vu watching the same thing year after year, and If you’re looking to switch up your NDP viewing experience you might want to check out Watch It Wet: NDP 2018.

One People, One Nation, One Drink-A-Pore

Organised by everyone’s favourite hipster cinema The Projector, the event is the first of a “new occasional series of communal drinking”, and aims to unite everyone as “one people, one nation, one drink-a-pore”. They’ll be broadcasting the parade on one of their big screens, alongside a dedicated bar for all your alcoholic needs.

This isn’t just going to be a mere screening, however — the event will also be hosted by drag queen Becca D’Bus, who’ll provide commentary throughout with the things you want to say but are too afraid to.

[caption id="attachment_36443" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]Projector NDP Image Credit: Intermission Bar At The Projector[/caption]

The best part? Admission is pay as you wish, so you won’t have to break the bank to attend. The Projector suggests a minimum of $15 though, which is still reasonable.

Doors open at 5:15pm on August 9th (duh) with free seating, so you’d better head there early if you want to experience an NDP in a totally different way this year.

Old Chang Kee And Its Sister Brands Are Serving A Chilli Crab-Filled Menu From Now Till Aug 31

With National Day coming up, many restaurants are coming up with themed menu items to pay tribute to Singapore and Old Chang Kee is no exception.

This year, Old Chang Kee and its affiliated brands have come up with a Chilli Crab feast, with all things related to the beloved seafood dish.

Here’s what you can get.

Chilli Crab Feast With Old Chang Kee

All Outlets Islandwide

The first addition in the Chilli Crab Feast, is the Chilli Crab’O ($2.20).

[caption id="attachment_35914" align="aligncenter" width="2480"]old chang kee Image Credit: Old Chang Kee[/caption]

This isn’t the first time that Old Chang Kee has released a Chilli Crab-flavoured curry puff. They did it back in 2014, though it didn’t have the red hue that this new one sports.

Another difference is that this new Chilli Crab’O uses real crab meat instead of the crabstick that was used in the previous one.

The Chilli Crab’O will be available at ALL Old Chang Kee outlets islandwide for a limited time only.

There’s also a promotion currently, where you can get 2 Chilli Crab’O for $4 (U.P: $4.40).

Old Chang Kee Flagship Coffeehouse @ Rex

The Old Chang Kee flagship coffeehouse at Rex will be introducing 2 new limited time menu items, the Flower Bread with Chilli Soft Shell Crab ($14.90) and the Mussels with Chilli Crab Sauce ($14.90).

[caption id="attachment_35915" align="aligncenter" width="2480"]old chang kee Image Credit: Old Chang Kee[/caption]

Old Chang Kee’s signature flower bread is great for dipping in the chilli crab sauce.

The best part is that the dish uses soft shell crab so it’s easy to eat. Because we all know that the most troublesome part of eating chilli crab is prying the flesh from the crab.

The Flower Bread with Chilli Soft Shell Crab is great for sharing. If you’re not a big fan of crab, go for the Mussels with Chilli Crab Sauce.

These 2 dishes are exclusive to the Old Chang Kee flagship coffeehouse at Rex.

Yet another Chilli Soft Shell Crab dish, this time it’s Soft Shell Crab Noodles with Chilli Crab Sauce ($14.90).

[caption id="attachment_35916" align="aligncenter" width="2480"]old chang kee Image Credit: Old Chang Kee[/caption]

Thick bee hoon (like the kind you have in your fried fish soup) is cooked in their special chilli crab sauce, and served with crispy soft shell crab.

This will be exclusive to Curry Time outlets for a limited time only.

You can choose from their QQ Fries, Chicken Skin, Chicken Pop, Chicken Nuggets, Chicken Chunks, and even Baby Squid!

They have 6 dipping sauces for you to choose from – Fiery Chilli, Honey Mustard, Wasabi, Cheddar Cheese, Barbecue, and Teriyaki.

Now they’re adding a new sauce to the menu for a limited time. It’s Chilli Soft Shell Crab Dip!

What’s In Store In August

BreadTalk Celebrates National Day

This year, BreadTalk is the principal partner of National Day Parade 2018, which means we’re getting new breads with locally-inspired flavours!

First up, the new Chilli Crab Puff ($2.20). No prizes for guessing what inspired this. Real crab meat is used in the chilli crab mixture that’s encased in flaky puff pastry, baked to perfection.

[caption id="attachment_35639" align="aligncenter" width="2172"]breadtalk Image Credit: BreadTalk[/caption]

This sweet and spicy creation will be available in all BreadTalk outlets from 30 July to 19 August 2018 at $2.20 per puff, or get 4 at the promotional price of $8!

The next one is a Durian Mini Croissant ($1.50) that’s made with real Mao Shan Wang durians. Rich, bittersweet, and buttery. Get yours at all BreadTalk outlets from 30 July to 19 August 2018 at $1.50 per piece, or get 6 at the promotional price of $8.

[caption id="attachment_35640" align="aligncenter" width="2172"]breadtalk Image Credit: BreadTalk[/caption]

While these 2 lead the charge, there are 8 other buns inspired by local hawker favourites.

[caption id="attachment_35641" align="aligncenter" width="857"]breadtalk Image Credit: BreadTalk[/caption]

What’s In A Year: We Rounded Up 10 Trending Moments In S’pore That Defined 2017

This has been quite a year for the world. For Singapore. Trains broke down, Presidents took office, and students flashed the middle finger on national television.

Oh, and the nation gushed over a 50 year old man.

But that’s not all that happened. We’ve rounded up the most Singaporean things that made our 2017.

Singapore’s 2017 In A Nutshell

1. Racial Harmony Exemplified

In January, there was a Malay wedding that was in the vicinity of the path of an ongoing funeral procession and the guests at the Malay wedding stood still out of respect for the procession.

[caption id="attachment_32605" align="aligncenter" width="498"] Image Credit: Facebook User Maidin Packer[/caption]

If that isn’t the most textbook representation of our racial harmony, we don’t know what is.

2. Uber Brings People Together

Singapore is a small country. The fact that we have so many people condensed into a small space, forces us to interact with strangers in various situations.

[caption id="attachment_32607" align="aligncenter" width="816"] Image Credit: Vulcan Post[/caption]

And in this cluster of people, 2 strangers managed to find love in an Uber. A part-time UberPool driver picked up an Air Stewardess while he was working, where they had a casual conversation about her occupation.

Following that encounter, he found her again through the power of social media and now they’re attached. Sometimes, love happens where and when you least expect it.

3. NSF Is STOMPed For The Right Reasons

NSFs receive a lot of flak from the public. Most of the time because they’re sitting on seats in the MRT. It got so bad to the point where commanders were actively telling their recruits NOT to sit when they’re taking public transport.

But that’s not what this NSF was STOMPed for. In March this year, this NSF was seen sheltering an elderly lady in a wheelchair at Pasir Laba Camp.

Is that not the sweetest gesture ever? It’s very heart-warming to see such scenarios.

4. Cow In Yishun

Given how urbanised Singapore is, we don’t see farm animals around housing estates at all (not anymore, that is).

Then there’s this cow in Yishun. No we’re talking about a mean lady. We’re talking about a literal cow. The kind that goes “Moo” and is stereotypically white with black patches (or black with white patches).

[caption id="attachment_32608" align="aligncenter" width="551"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Image Credit: Pinterest[/caption]

Long story short, the court denies the return of the phone to the parent.

The moral of the story here, is that privilege will not save you from rule-breaking.

7. The Man Who Drank The Elixir Of Life

In July, the nation was shook by the sudden discovery of the Man Who Never Ages.

Yes we’re talking about ChuanDo Tan. The 50 year old that looks way younger than his age allows.

[caption id="attachment_32611" align="aligncenter" width="652"] Image Credit: @chuando_chuandoandfrey[/caption]

The former model-turned-photographer’s secret to staying young and buff AF, is working out religiously.

Not forgetting really good genes too.

We’ve never seen the nation come together for something positive, since National Day 2016.

8. The Kid Who Flipped The Nation Off

National Day this year was brilliant, as usual. But the icing on the cake wasn’t the fireworks.

It came at the end of the live broadcast of the National Day Parade.

A student from Henry Park Primary School (bless his heart) was seen flashing his middle finger at the camera at the end of the parade, when the performers were gathered for the finale.

[caption id="attachment_32612" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Image Credit: Youtube[/caption]

The nation gasped, processed what happened, and laughed. Well, most of us laughed anyway. Parents were shaking their heads and teachers were scrambling to find the boy.

Long story short, he was found, reprimanded and counselled. But it was still a good laugh.

9. A New President

In September this year, there was a lot of controversy regarding the reserved election, but eventually the nation moved on and a new President was elected.

[caption id="attachment_32613" align="aligncenter" width="1026"] Image Credit: @halimahyacob[/caption]

Mdm Halimah Yacob, previously the MP of Jurong GRC, is Singapore’ first female President. She was declared President-elect on 13 September this year and inaugurated the day after.

10. Flowers For Patients

In November, volunteers at BloomBack, a social enterprise, recycled wedding flowers and turned them into 300 bouquets that were handed out to patients at St. Andrew’s Community Hospital, Banyan Home, and the Salvation Army.

[caption id="attachment_32615" align="aligncenter" width="687"] Image Credit: BloomBack[/caption]

The flowers, worth more than $10,000, were collected from a wedding dinner the night before. Not wanting the fresh flowers to be tossed in the bin, BloomBack decided to give these flowers a new purpose.

Sometimes, small gestures can really make one’s day.

This National Day, get ready for a huge treat! The Line (at Shangri-La Hotel), one of Singapore’s best international buffets, is taking Singaporeans on a journey through our unique food culture!

You can expect innovative twists of our local favourite dishes! Exactly what kind of twists? We’re talking about out-of-this-world bizarre creations.

Have you heard of Chendol – but served in bubble form? What about Tau Huey Popcorn, or Oyster Omelette served on an Oyster shell? As weird as these dishes sound, you need not fret!

[caption id="attachment_11716" align="alignnone" width="4912"]Image Credits: Rebecca Ong Chendol Bubbles – it looks cute, but you’ll be surprised – each sip you take is full of flavour![/caption]

We’ve gone ahead to taste and savour these not-to-be-missed unique creations. They’re as good, if not, even better than the originals of our local favourites.

The best part? You can enjoy these local delights alongside the best international selection. That’s right – there’ll be fresh cuts of sashimi, seafood on ice, beef, and not to mention, a wide selection of desserts and pastries, including the best chocolate lava cake (we had 2 servings, guilty as charged).

Flavours of Singapore at The Line

In celebration of National Day, Shangri-La’s famous buffet dinner at The Line will transform into a traditional food street from the 1960s.

Local Delights

Chef de Cuisine Vincent Wong is a figure you won’t miss at the buffet – passionate, tattooed, and engaging, he stands out among the others. The brains behind the delectable and innovative dishes, he brought us through the story behind each dish he conceptualised.

Chendol Bubbles

Take, for example, the Chendol Bubbles. Deftly and expertly, these bubbles of goodness were scooped into this cup. It looks deceivingly bland, but trust us, this is full of flavour. Its intriguing appearance is due to pockets of Chendol-infused air. There’s red bean mousse, and standard Chendol toppings waiting at the bottom of the cup. This is the epitome of guilt-free dessert – all the flavours you want in a Chendol, but without the guilt.

Tau Huey Popcorn

If you’re in the mood for another dish that’s out of this world, try the Tau Huey popcorn! You heard us right! Here’s a hint: the futuristic kitchen at The Line uses nitrogen gas. Our local soya bean beverage will be chilled to a point where it solidifies.. and resembles popcorn! Its extremely light and delicate texture will melt in your mouth in mere seconds, only to leave you begging for more.

Keep a lookout on our FB and IG for videos of Chef Vincent preparing and explaining these dishes!

Other Creations

There are more favourite old-time delights that are sure to bring a smile to your face. Think Chicken Rice Maki Rolls (with the best chicken rice chilli), Chilli Crab Brioche, Kaya-flavoured Arabic Bread and Nasi Lemak: canapé style!

Our local Oyster Omelette takes on an imaginative twist with deep fried egg artistically placed on each fresh and tender oyster. We couldn’t help filling our plates with these mini crowd-pleasers!

A Durian Alfresco Fruit Stall!

[caption id="attachment_11729" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]The jovial Durian Master The jovial Durian Master[/caption]

Durian lovers will be ecstatic to note that there will be an alfresco fruit stall full of specially-imported tropical fruits! When we were there, we were treated to D13 and Pheonix durians, all opened fresh in front of you by a charming and jovial Durian Master. So rich, creamy, sweet, and good, we had a few servings each! There may also be other tropical fruits like mangosteen, rambutan, longan, and jackfruit.

All the durians you see in the picture were wiped out at about 9:30PM! Yea, that’s how good it is.

Other Delights

Besides all these, there are stations serving Satay, Laksa, Drunken Prawn, warm food dishes, childhood snacks and drinks, and local pastries and desserts – the coconut durian cake was the best!

International Spread

Marine Harvest Seafood

The Line is well known for one of the largest buffet spreads in Singapore. Its fame stems from its generous selection during the Marine Harvest Seafood nights (Tuesday & Thursday). You name it, they have it! A few types of lobsters, oysters, clams, mussels, shrimps, crab claws, prawns, are served on a cold bed of ice.

The Oysters are also shucked live and fresh in front of you!

In addition, there is also a Roast Station offering salmon, and different kinds of beef. The Japanese station serves up a wide selection of sashimi; Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Swordfish, Octopus, and more!  If you like to have some greens for every meal, you can count on the Salad Bar. Lovers of cheese, we counted at least 5 different types of cheeses to go with biscuits, bread, or ham!

Tip: You can request for salmon belly at the sashimi station.

Unlimited Wines, Beers, Juices, & Drinks

Only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for Marine Harvest night, enjoy a selection of unlimited sparkling, red and white wines, beers, soft drinks, and juices!

Dessert

[caption id="attachment_11734" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]That's not all. There are like 6 shelves of desserts. That’s not all. There are like 6 shelves of desserts.[/caption]

Our best advice? Always save space for dessert. We adore the delicate toffee and nut tartlets, chocolate lava cake with matcha ice cream, and durian coconut cake. There is even a selection of local sweet treats such as kuih and traditional cream cakes for those who want to take a walk down memory lane.

Tip + food hack: Drizzle olive oil, and sea salt (from the salad bar) on their vanilla soft serve for a delightfully sweet treat with a salty crunch. Our initial scepticism about this combination melted away the moment we took a bite.

We Never Wanted To Leave

The Line undoubtedly remains one of the best buffets to be found on our island. We loved how approachable the chefs were at their stations. They entertained the crowd as they cooked on the spot, engaged and explained the dishes, and served up hot and fresh food along with a joke or two.

A Peek At NDP 2016 – Fireworks Both Indoors AND Outdoors!

If we could describe NDP 2016 (National Day Parade 2016) in one word, it would be ‘spectacular’.

With a catchy theme, ‘Building Our Singapore Of Tomorrow‘, and set against the refreshing backdrop of Singapore Indoor Stadium, here are the reasons NDP 2016 will be the best one yet!

[caption id="attachment_11137" align="alignnone" width="4288"]Image Credits: Benjamin Ong Image Credits: Benjamin Ong[/caption]

NDP 2016 – The First NDP at Indoor Stadium

Singapore will celebrate her birthday in the newly-renovated Singapore Indoor Stadium for the first time. That’s right! Fret not about the hot sun and enjoy the show indoors while staying cool! In addition, the venue boasts a huge seating capacity of up to 12,000. You can also look forward to conveniently located restrooms.

Jaw-dropping Light Shows

Next up, the dazzling light shows are undoubtedly the most impressive part of NDP 2016 itself. Be awed by the ingenious use of light effects throughout the parade. Keep a lookout for Act 3 and 4 when the stadium lights go off.

In fact, every spectator can be part of the performance simply by wearing the LED wristbands distributed in goodie bags! The LED wristbands pulsate with colours. It even syncs with the parade’s live music, light shows and body movements. Just imagine the stadium as the night sky, and your wristbands form part of the galaxy of twinkling stars!

[caption id="attachment_11134" align="alignnone" width="4288"]Image Credits: Benjamin Ong Image Credits: Benjamin Ong[/caption]

Our Prime Minister has remarked that “Singapore is like a unicorn. One of a kind, a special animal, no other in the world. It works well, (and) has unique solutions.” Indeed, NDP 2016 even stars a sparkling unicorn dancing gracefully above the audience.

Watch in awe as dancers and aerialists clad in kaleidoscopic LED costumes execute a perfectly synchronised performance. Our favourite segment was Act 5, where Singapore’s future cityscape took shape right before our eyes, made possible by 3D projections!

[caption id="attachment_11140" align="alignnone" width="4288"]Image Credits: Benjamin Ong Image Credits: Benjamin Ong[/caption]

Drawing Inspiration from the Past

NDP 2016 features the lesser-known story of Badang. In the act ‘Bandang and The Singapore Stone‘, impressive boulders are hurled across the stage together with artistic depictions of a tribe war.

Notably, Badang represents the strength and resilience of our nation in the face of hardships. The story is set in ancient times. Incorporating the Singapore Stone into a thrilling adventure, the story tells of true bravery in times of adversity.

In a truly engaging way, Singaporeans can learn more about this national treasure!

[caption id="attachment_11131" align="alignnone" width="4288"]Image Credits: Benjamin Ong Image Credits: Benjamin Ong[/caption]

We’re All in This Together

Do you know that this year’s parade features a performance put together by the special needs community? In the act “What A Wonderful World”, a beautiful mass display formation is inspired by creative paintings drawn by the special needs community.

You’ll even see members of the disabled society joining in the iridescent show on stage! Also, the audience will have a chance to sign together to songs like “Count On Me Singapore” and everyone’s favourite “Home”. This is to raise awareness for the deaf community.

We found it especially heartwarming to see the entire audience singing together with the performers on stage at NDP 2016. The effortless blend of engagement and emphasis on Singapore as an inclusive society will certainly impress audiences of all ages!

To Top It All Off: Fireworks

Finally, as Singaporeans, one of our favourite parts of the national parade has to be the dazzling fireworks to end the night. Though the indoor stadium maintains a partially-closed roof during the spectacle, audience members can still catch a glimpse of the ‘night-time flowers’ comfortably from their seats.

In addition, NDP 2016 features indoor fireworks as well. We say yes to the best of both worlds: indoor AND outdoor fireworks!

[caption id="attachment_11136" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image Credits: Rebecca Ong Image Credits: Rebecca Ong[/caption]

NDP 2016 – The Final Verdict

NDP 2016  is similar, yet extremely different from all the previous parades we’ve ever witnessed. That is, different in the best way possible. We feel that the parade does an excellent job of fostering Singaporean pride and creatively showcasing the bright future of our ever-developing country.

Therefore, you’ll be in for a treat at NDP 2016 for sure, and don’t forget to bring those cameras to capture the spectacular parade!
