5 New & Exciting Restaurants In SG You Should Check Out

You won’t run out of dining options with the numerous new restaurants that have been springing up these couple of months! Here are some exciting restaurants to check out:
1. Redpan
A joint effort by the team behind the Esplanade (DP Architects) and the owners of Grub, Redpan is where design and food come together in a casual bistro concept. Unlike many fancy dining spots that serve up a menu of foreign cuisine, Redpan brings the spotlight back to local flavours with fusion dishes like the Hae Bi Hiam Pasta and Char Siew Fries. The menu, which features food illustrations instead of photos, is a unique touch as well.

5 Singlish Phrases – What They Mean & Where To Eat That Food!

Singlish, love it or hate it.
Even if you lean towards the latter, you can’t deny the fact that there’s something unique about it. If you were to travel to another continent, odds are, you’ll have great difficulty conversing with locals there. It’s not your fault, our local unique slang tends to slip out.
Some of these phrases might sound foreign to your ear. Some might make you laugh like a drain. Some might even make your mouth water.
Let’s dive in, shall we?
1. Blur like sotong
[caption id="attachment_5877" align="aligncenter" width="640"]
Where to find the best sambal sotong: Chomp Chomp Ru Yi BBQ
Ru Yi BBQ’s dishes are hot on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside — it will leave you licking your plate and spoon and fork. The sambal sotong is sinful and makes your tummy feel like the Valley of Fire. But dear God almighty, is it worth it.
Address: 210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8, Stall No. 72, Singapore 310210 (not located at Chomp Chomp)
Contact: +65 8133 7688
Opening hours: 5pm – 11pm daily
Price: >S$8
2. Chop chop kali pok
[caption id="attachment_5045" align="aligncenter" width="700"]What it means: Work faster
Kali pok refers to curry puff. Chop chop simply means hurry up. The two separate phrases were put together because they rhyme and sound catchy. Chop chop kali pok is often uttered by the impatient P.E. teacher or your BMTC instructor.
How to use it: “My 88-year-old grandma can run faster than you. Faster, chop chop kali pok!”
Where to find the best curry puff: AMK Curry Puff.
Thick crust. Check. Spicy. Check. Fragrance. Check. (Apparently, the owner of AMK Curry Puff, Mr Leo, used to be a shareholder in Tip Top Curry Puff!) If you love food with a tinge of tradition, you must head down to Toa Payoh. Word is, the curry puff is still finger-licking good even when it’s cold.
Address: Super 28 Coffee Shop, Block 184 Toa Payoh Central, #01-372, Singapore 310184
Contact: +65 9672 6621
Opening hours: 10am – 8:30pm
Price: >S$1.40
3. Stylo Milo
[caption id="attachment_5044" align="aligncenter" width="700"]What it means: A fashionable, stylish person. A little tricky – it could be used as a compliment or sarcastic insult.
How to use it: “Wah piang, you wear socks with sandals? You stylo milo man.”
Where to find the best Milo Dinosaur: Spize.
Most drink stalls at coffee shops could probably do a Milo Dinosaur for you, but Spize is one of those stalls that does it the best. Of course, it seems nuts to order the drink alone – it’s milo + milo powder. If you’d like something to go along with your drink – try Spize’s seafood aglio olio and chicken chop. Each bite is more delicious than the last.
A word of caution, though — you may get a sugar rush!
Address: Bedok outlet – 336 Bedok Road, Singapore 469512
(Visit their official site for River Valley and Rifle Range outlets)
Opening hours: Weekdays – 12pm to 2am & weekends – 12pm to 3am
Price: Iced Milo Dinosaur S$3.50, Iced Milo Godzilla S$4.50
Milo Dinosaur: Iced Milo topped with Milo powder
Milo Godzilla: Iced Milo topped with Milo powder, and ice cream or whipped cream
4. Ya ya papaya
[caption id="attachment_5043" align="aligncenter" width="700"]What it means: An insufferable stuck-up person.
There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance. The phrase, ya ya papaya, leans towards the latter.
How to use it: “Just now, I congratulate Alex on his promotion, and you know what he said to me? He said ‘Of course, I deserve it.’ Cannot stand that guy, so ya ya papaya.”
Where to find the best green papaya salad: Beer Thai House Restaurant.
Lovers of spicy food, a heads-up! Granted, Beer Thai’s signature dishes are the mango salad and pineapple fried rice, but its loyal customers will have you know that the papaya salad can easily hold its own. It’s appetising and authentic.
Address: Golden Mile Tower #01-50/51, 6001 Beach Road, Singapore 199588
Contact: + 65 6297 7644
Opening hours: 11am – 11pm daily
Price: >S$6
5. Agak-agak (a.k.a agar agar)
[caption id="attachment_5042" align="aligncenter" width="700"]What it means: A rough estimation.
It’s supposed to be agak-agak (a Malay Language phrase), but for some odd reason, someone gave it a new twist and called it agar-agar. It’s stuck since then. Sigh, we Singaporeans with our pronunciation…
How to use it: “Ah ya, don’t ask me to calculate for you. My maths very jialat, got a D for my PSLE. You own self agar agar la.”
Where to find the best agar agar cake: Cake Story.
Their cakes are so adorable. You’ll want to take a picture of it and post it on Instagram. Lo and behold, you’ll receive massive likes! They have a decent range of agar agar cakes for you to choose from – Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, Barbie Ball, just to name a few.

Japanese Carnival This Weekend – Food, Games, And More!

If you love Japanese culture like we do, mark your calendar! Super Japan Matsuri will be held from 20 to 22 May 2016 at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay from 5pm to 10pm daily.
Food
Like every other Matsuri (festival), you can look forward to a weekend of traditional Japanese festival food such as Takoyaki (octopus balls), Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes), soft serve ice cream, and of course, Japanese beer.
[caption id="attachment_5798" align="alignnone" width="924"]

Games
Those who want to try your hand at Japanese games, you might want to start practising your Yo-yo tsuri (water balloon fishing), Senbonbiki (lucky strings game), Katanuki (candy moulding), Shateki (shoot prizes down), and many more.
[caption id="attachment_5842" align="aligncenter" width="1920"]
Senbonbiki is a game where treats or prizes are attached to long strings. The game player will pull on a string, not knowing which treat is attached to it. Apparently, this is usually a ‘sure-win’ game.
Dress up
On top of that, if you dress to match their nightly theme (see image below), you’ll receive one free game coupon to be used at the festival.
[caption id="attachment_5794" align="alignnone" width="960"]This sure sounds like a great opportunity to dress up, cosplay, or put on a yukata (summer kimono)!

The Tiramisu Hero Strikes Back With A Brand New Menu!

What do you think of when you hear someone say “Sir Antonio”? If you’re anything like me, you’d probably picture a tall, armour-donning knight with a curly moustache.
Sir Antonio
However, for the patrons of The Tiramisu Hero, what comes to mind is a cat wearing a zorro mask and a flowing cape. Now, that’s majestic.
[caption id="attachment_5526" align="aligncenter" width="612"]Sir Antonio is actually the mascot of The Tiramisu Hero, a cosy little cafe located at 121 Tyrwhitt Road. They even made an animated clip of his back story!
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh6cdSZ1lTc ]Oh, did I mention? Once you step into the cafe, you will be greeted with a really adorable sculpture of Sir Antonio.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BDnlKaLrw_Z/[/embed]13 Tiramisu Flavours
The Tiramisu Hero is known for their selection of delicious tiramisu served in a jar, with flavours ranging from baileys (alcoholic) to speculoos (spiced cinnamon) to durian. You can either order these from their
The Tiramisu Hero’s New Menu!
You’d probably think that they are exclusively a dessert joint. Contrary to its name, The Tiramisu Hero also serves a respectable variety of food and drinks.
In fact, they’ve been working hard at it and have just launched a new menu. (Click on image for clearer view.)
Check out the extensive menu. The food and drinks are to die for!
As much as I wanted to, trying every single thing on the menu is just not possible. I ended up trying two of the dishes that seemed really appealing to me. Here’s how it went!
Truffle Salmon Cold Pasta
The strong flavours of salmon, truffle oil and ebiko, coupled with the neutrality of the cold pasta created a balanced and refreshing taste. It was a pleasant surprise as I did not expect the flavours to mesh so well together.
Furthermore, in our hot and humid Singapore, cold pasta is definitely the perfect dish whenever you need to beat the heat. Go ahead and get some!
Salted Egg Pasta
One of the dishes that we couldn’t resist ordering was their salted egg pasta. Well, that is to be expected since the salted egg craze has been going out of control these days.
When the pasta was served, it was generously coated with a layer of salted egg sauce. They certainly don’t skimp on the good stuff! The rich flavour of salted egg yolks, combined with a slight tinge of spice was so addictive that it kept me going for more. This dish is highly recommended for all salted egg fans because I’m sure you will love it as much as I did!
The quality and variety of their food menu is comparable and better than many other cafes out there. If you ever fancy a place to have a meal AND a dessert, give this place a try! As a bonus, you can even take a photo with the irresistibly cute Sir Antonio as a keepsake! How cool is that?
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BC15ku1ARgt/[/embed]PS: I have heard rumors that Sir Antonio aspires to be as successful as Hello Kitty. Give him a hand, will ya!

An Underground Bar Event With Complimentary Drinks? Basement Seah Damn Happening Sia!

It’s been a looong week and Friday can’t come soon enough. We understand the wait for the weekend can be painful. In fact, the day before TGIF is usually the worst. But instead of staying down, we’re going to get you pumped for TGIF with some after-work Thursday chill and booze. Nobody said you had to wait till the weekend to have fun, right?
[caption id="attachment_5373" align="alignnone" width="1202"]Mr Punch Public House
Introducing Mr Punch Public House, a quirky yet cosy bar we recently stumbled across. Tucked away in the basement of the Museum of Toys is this unassuming gastropub, with its vintage décor and cosy ambience. It exuded the kind of odd familiarity that quickly put us at ease.
[caption id="attachment_5374" align="alignnone" width="1642"]Mr. Punch Public House is a concept inspired by the puppet show ‘Punch & Judy’ (the younglings will probably have no idea what this is) with the Public House being Mr. Punch’s last destination as a world-traveller. So this bar is akin to Mr. Punch’s treasure trove of memories; pretty interesting concept, we have to say.
Basement Seah
Every Thursday from 7pm to 11pm, the bar transforms into a cosy dinner spot that takes you back to the ‘60s. Known as Basement Seah, this retro themed night will have you immersed in both fun and nostalgia as the DJ puts a modern spin on some of the era’s most popular swing music. That’s right, a live DJ. Who knew you could enjoy great music, booze and feel cosy all at the same time?
[caption id="attachment_5418" align="alignnone" width="5184"]Drinks
Mr. Punch Public House offers an extensive drinks menu that includes the unique Cocktail World Tour, a curated series of international cocktails carefully thought out by its bartenders. From Malaysia’s Jungle Bird ($17) to the Russian Cocaine ($14), we’re pretty sure you’ll find a cocktail or two that suits you. If you’re more into wines, we bring good news. Simply RSVP at 8339 8966 with your email address and quote DISCOVER MR PUNCH to receive a complimentary glass of wine this Thursday, 14th April 2016!
[caption id="attachment_5376" align="alignnone" width="1369"]Food
Feeling peckish? There is a brand new sharing menu that offers an electic mix of cuisines. Start with the Platter ($35/three dishes) and choose from dishes such as freshly Grilled Tiger Prawns, deliciously marinated Marmite Glazed Squid Rings, and tender Slow-Cooked Pork Belly. Though not included, we thought the unique Potato Chip Chicken (potato chip breaded chicken) makes a great tapas.
[caption id="attachment_5377" align="alignnone" width="4000"]Looking for something a little more filling? Give its signature Herb-Crusted Barramundi ($29) or its Bacon-Wrapped Venison Loin ($45) a try. Though slightly pricier, we’re confident that the dinning experience at Mr Punch will be value for money.
Whether you’re looking for a unique yet cosy bar to take your after work conversations to or a place for an evening of pre-TGIF fun, Basement Seah@Mr Punch Public House is definitely the place to be. Remember, simply RSVP at 8339 8966 with your email address and quote DISCOVER MR PUNCH to receive your complimentary wine!
With its great ambience, refreshing music, lip-smacking food and free booze, if you’re not reaching out for your phone to RSVP now, we’d do it for you.
