Chendol Mr Softee Makes A Sneaky Comeback In Selected 7-11 Stores

Mr Softee

7-11 used to be a snack wonderland, with microwaveable sandwiches and pastas, instant noodle prep stations, Craze Hottis, Maggi mashed potatoes, and the OG soft serve of Singapore, Mr Softee.

Mr Softee was THE DESSERT of my childhood. But like the Avatar, it disappeared when I (and the rest of Singapore) needed it most.

[caption id="attachment_35530" align="aligncenter" width="900"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

However, it wouldn’t be gone for too long, because now it’s BACK!

Ice Cream, You Scream For Mr Softee

Mr Softee made a quiet return to Singapore, with a nifty soft serve machine sitting in a 7-11 outlet at Bencoolen, near Ibis Hotel, churning cups of Chendol-flavoured Mr Softee soft serves.

[caption id="attachment_35526" align="aligncenter" width="1066"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_35527" align="aligncenter" width="1636"] Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

However this isn’t the first sighting we’ve had of Mr Softee since its sudden disappearance in the late 2000s.

Back in January this year, people found that the Vanilla Mr Softee was available in selected 7-11 outlets across the island.

Now this one only sells the local favourite, Chendol-flavoured soft serve at just $1.50 a cup. Though to be honest, it looks like it shrunk in the wash.

[caption id="attachment_35528" align="aligncenter" width="1396"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

Like excuse me? Your price didn’t increase, good for you. But the serving size really dipped.

[caption id="attachment_35529" align="aligncenter" width="1540"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

But I guess, no price increase is better than nothing. So I shall refrain from complaining too much.

7-Eleven has made a very special announcement regarding their fan-favourite ice-cream.

[caption id="attachment_37735" align="aligncenter" width="1360"] Image Credit: 7-Eleven[/caption]

From 3 – 16 October, Mr Softee’s cendol ice-cream will be going at 2 for $2 only! So grab a dessert buddy and eat to your heart’s content, or eat both if that’s how you roll.

While the weather these days is more suited to hot pot dinners and warm comforting soups, I will brave the rain and the subsequent shivers for Mr Softee.

I will not forsake him like he did to all Singaporeans.

Cravings aside, if like me, you’re seeking for a cup of Mr Softee, here’s are the selected outlets to get your cravings fixed:

The Singapore Zoo Lights Up At Night This July With A New Luminous Rainforest Trail

Rainforest Lumina

Have you been to the Singapore Zoo at night?

I’m not talking about the Night Safari. I mean, the Singapore Zoo. Usually, you won’t. Or rather, you can’t because the Zoo closes at 6pm daily.

From 1 July 2018, you can!

The Singapore Zoo has come up with a new attraction in celebration of its 45th birthday!

[caption id="attachment_35521" align="aligncenter" width="1174"]Rainforest Lumina Image Credit: Jの背包旅行[/caption]

Introducing Rainforest Lumina.

A Rainforest Light Show In The Dark

Held in collaboration with Moment Factory, Rainforest Lumina is apparently the first multi-sensory night walk experience in Asia, with more than 10 interactive zones along the 1km light trail that takes you through the Singapore Zoo.

[caption id="attachment_35519" align="aligncenter" width="1920"]Rainforest Lumina Image Credit: Rainforest Lumina[/caption]

However, don’t expect to see any live animals (they’re off-duty). The only animals you’ll see are on the various light installations or projections.

[caption id="attachment_35520" align="aligncenter" width="861"]Rainforest Lumina Image Credit: Rainforest Lumina[/caption]

With zones that look like they’re lifted straight out of James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar, this is guaranteed to be a luminescent spectacle.

Stroll on the Luminous Pathway, step through the Shimmering Islands, and marvel at the glowing Lantern Passage.

Creamery Boutique Is Gearing Up For National Day With Chilli Crab And Ondeh Ondeh Flavoured Desserts

Creamery Boutique

If you’ve been to Creamery Boutique, then you’d know that they’re famous for their homemade ice cream paired with lava cookies.

[caption id="attachment_35488" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]Creamery Boutique Image Credit: Creamery Boutique Ice Creams Singapore[/caption]

With National Day 2018 coming up, they’ve unveiled 2 Singaporean flavours to commemorate Singapore’s 53rd birthday.

Ondeh Ondeh Cookie With Milo Dinosaur Ice Cream ($8.90)

Creamery Boutique pays homage to the traditional Ondeh Ondeh kuih with a crumbly Ondeh Ondeh pandan lava cookie, filled with gula melaka.

[caption id="attachment_35486" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]Creamery Boutique Image Credit: Creamery Boutique[/caption]

That’s not all, it’s paired with their homemade Milo Dinosaur ice cream and garnished with freshly grated coconut.

If you love your traditional kuih, you ought to give this a try.

Chilli Crab Cookie With Bread Toast Ice Cream ($10.90)

This odd combination is Creamery Boutique’s first savoury lava cookie. The chewy brownie lava cookie is filled with a robust chilli gravy that’s made in-house from scratch.

[caption id="attachment_35487" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]Creamery Boutique Image Credit: Creamery Boutique[/caption]

While this brownie lava cookie already sounds odd, Bread Toast ice cream takes the cake. However, this is an interesting take on the usual Chilli Crab and Fried Mantou pairing that we’re all familiar with.

If you’re interested in trying these unique National Day flavours, do note that the Ondeh Ondeh Cookie With Milo Dinosaur ice cream is available from 14 July to 9 August 2018, while the Chilli Crab Cookie With Bread Toast Ice Cream will be available from 9 August to 31 August 2018.

Whacky or wonderful? We’ll let you be the judge of that.

NDP Jalan!

If you loved playing Pokemon Go, then you’ll love this new app created for NDP 2018.

Introducing NDP Jalan!, a new location-based, augmented reality (AR) mobile game!

This app is the first interactive mobile game that’s launched in conjunction with NDP.

NDP Jalan!

While the name of the game is a little tacky (come on, Pokemon GO and this is NDP Jalan! Tell me you see the similarity here), I decided to download the app to try for myself.

To start off, the default avatar is actually quite well-designed. It’s cute.

[caption id="attachment_35472" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

You’ll get to choose your gender (of course), skin tone, 12 different colours for your clothing, and even the DESIGN on your backpack.

[caption id="attachment_35473" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption] [caption id="attachment_35474" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

The designs for the backpack were all designed by students from 18 Special Education schools specially for National Day 2018!

After customising and creating your Avatar, you’ll be directed to screen which is basically a tutorial for the game.

[caption id="attachment_35475" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

The app will lead players on specially curated trails, with various hidden checkpoints and quests to complete at each checkpoint.

[caption id="attachment_35476" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

As you pass each checkpoint, the app will reveal the location of the next one.

[caption id="attachment_35477" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption] [caption id="attachment_35478" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

Here’s the zinger: if you’re a Singaporean citizen or Permanent Resident and manage to complete EVERY quest in each trail, you will stand a chance to win tickets to the National Day Parade 2018!

[caption id="attachment_35479" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

There are 3 trails available – Arts and Culture, Nature, and NDP.

[caption id="attachment_35480" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption] [caption id="attachment_35481" align="aligncenter" width="720"]NDP Jalan! Image Credit: NDP Jalan![/caption]

Every 5 quests completed will allow players to redeem discount vouchers for selected food and beverage and retail outlets.

Every 20 quests completed per theme will give you the chance to win NDP 2018 tickets!

The NDP Jalan! app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play store for free.

Watch the trailer for NDP Jalan! below.

How Many S’porean Milestones Have You Achieved? This Card Game Will Tell You How You Fare

Singapore has long been lauded as the best and safest place in Asia to raise your kids. Even better if you’re an expat.

However, as a Singaporean (born and raised), I can tell you that it’s not all roses and daisies. Singapore has consistently topped the rankings for being the MOST EXPENSIVE city in the world to live in.

Cost of living has increased (because capitalism and globalisation waits for no scrub to earn more money), while our wages have not.

The Singaporean dream used to be owning the 5Cs – Cash, Car, Credit Card, Condo, and Country Club (membership).

Now the millennial’s 5Cs consists of Career, Cheap Everything (air tickets, food, clothes), Connection, Cashless Payment, and Crying. Trust me, I’m a millennial.

Our Singaporean Dream is just to have our place, a heated shower, a decent paying job, and hope to be able to retire before we die from work.

[caption id="attachment_35460" align="aligncenter" width="1045"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

If you’re as “optimistic” as I am about living the Singaporean Dream, you can “sign up” for a trial by playing this locally-made card game aptly named “The Singaporean Dream“.

The Singaporean Dream Is (Not) A Game

This card game will see you pit your survival skills with other Singaporeans, as you pay, steal and sabo your way to being the perfect Singaporean.

[caption id="attachment_35464" align="aligncenter" width="1016"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

Pick Your Avatar

You start with 5 personas to choose from – the Auntie, the CBD OL (Office Lady), the Complain Queen, the NSF, and the Ah Beng.

[caption id="attachment_35459" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

Very local archetypes here.

Live, Collect, Win

There are 3 types of cards in the game – Action Cards, Cash Cards, and Dream Cards.

So the main goal of the game, is to accumulate and amass as many Singaporean Dreams (Dream Cards) as you can before the pile of “Dream Cards” runs out.

[caption id="attachment_35463" align="aligncenter" width="995"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

There are 2 ways you can collect Dream Cards.

  1. Buy Dream Cards with Cash Cards.
  2. Gain Dream Cards with Action Cards.

It’s quite an accurate depiction of the Singaporean life though. You’re either rich enough to accomplish a Singaporean Dream, or you work towards achieving the Singaporean Dream, like the rest of us.

Some of the Action Cards include “Getting A Seat In A Crowded MRT”, “Dating An Angmoh”, “Kena STOMP-ed”, and “Cutting A Queue”.

[caption id="attachment_35462" align="aligncenter" width="1018"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

Each turn, you draw 2 cards from the Action Cards pile, and you can play up to 2 actions per turn.

Repeat until the pile of Dream Cards runs out! The player with the most Singaporean Dreams wins the game!

There are 104 illustrated cards in a deck and each card is hand-drawn by the creator, Theresa (She’s a millennial).

[caption id="attachment_35461" align="aligncenter" width="1401"]The Singaporean Dream Image Credit: The Singaporean Dream[/caption]

So don’t tell me millennials don’t work for anything because I’m sick of it.

If you’ve been to Mind Cafe recently, you might’ve been one of the few fortunate ones to play the game when it was on trial there.

You can pledge an amount for their Kickstarter campaign if you’re looking to get your hands on a deck.

In the meantime, how are you really faring in your real-life quest for the Singaporean Dream?

A Warm Bowl Of Spinach Soup Fixes Everything, And You Can Get One At Just $3.50

Spinach Soup

Unlike most kids, I grew up with a huge love for vegetables. I could never relate to children in movies or storybooks, shunning broccoli and carrots like it’s the plague.

You won’t finish your broccoli? I’ll do it for you. Carrots too? Send them over. From cabbage to kai lan to boy choy, I loved them all.

But there was one particular vegetable that holds a special place in my heart – Spinach.

[caption id="attachment_35436" align="aligncenter" width="450"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Spinach Soup Image Credit: Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Jessica[/caption]

Despite the difference in ingredients, BOTH soups are priced at $3.50 which is incredibly cheap by today’s living standards.

The Spinach Century & Salted Egg has almost the same ingredients as the Poached Spinach in Superior broth with 3 eggs (egg, century egg and salted egg) that you usually find in upscale Chinese restaurants.

[caption id="attachment_35438" align="aligncenter" width="645"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Jackson Sim[/caption]

While the soup is good on its own (for me at least. Spinach is actually quite filling okay.), you can choose to top up $0.50 for either thick or thin bee hoon, macaroni or white rice, or $1 for brown rice.

[caption id="attachment_35439" align="aligncenter" width="645"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Maureen Ow[/caption]

That’s not all, you also have to the option to add-on more ingredients from $0.50 to $2.

In total, your meal might just cost you less than $4!

So while Amoy Street Food Centre is a treasure trove of food, Spinach Soup should not be overlooked because some days (mainly the bad ones), all you really need is a good, hot bowl of spinach soup.

Because soup doesn’t let you down.
