That High Tech Go-Karting Track In Singapore You Didn’t Know About!

If there’s one place to know what it is like to step into the shoes of Lewis Hamilton, this would be the only place in Singapore to do it.

The Karting Arena, which most of us might not know of, opened its doors to the public in September last year. It is a fairly high-tech electric go-kart racing circuit which caters to the casual and semi-serious alike.

The very first of its kind in Singapore, its electric go-karts operate on battery instead of petroleum, promising a seamless and quiet whizzing ride to customers. Its very own circuit is 500m long and racers are put through The Karting Arena’s own twisting and turning track that seems fairly beginner-friendly yet proves not to be entirely smooth sailing.

Here’s a look at it:

For the light-hearted who still wish to experience the thrill of the race, The Karting Arena is equipped with networked racing simulators where both the young and old can challenge friends and family on a virtual track from the comfort of an air-conditioned room.

Image credit: The Karting Arena Facebook

And trust me when I say this is nothing like a Daytona video game at your neighbourhood shopping mall arcade; its simulators let players pit themselves against one another through a real-life professional Formula One race track, or even in their own circuit just a few metres away from where you would be seated.

To put into perspective of how intense the actual go-karts here can get, racers without a driver’s license are capped at a 30km/h speed limit for safety reasons, whereas those with one are free to reach the higher 50km/h speed.

If you thought the go-karts in theme parks were adrenaline pumping, wait until you strap yourself on at The Karting Arena. And the price to enjoy this adrenaline rush? S$50 for first timers, and cheaper if you are a regular.

Address: 200 Turf Club Road #01-01B, The Grandstand Singapore 287994

Opening hours: 10:00am to 10:00pm daily except Mondays

10 Scenic Cycling Spots In Singapore To Explore With Your Friends Or Family!

Ready to enjoy Singapore’s beautiful landscape in healthy way? If you are unsure on what to do, here’s a great suggestion for you: grab your bicycle, get a friend or two, prepare some drinks and snacks, and then hit one of Singapore’s lovely parks, walkways or reserves on pedals!

To help you further, we have compiled 10 of what we think are the best scenic, nostalgic and quiet place in Singapore to enjoy on two wheels.

  1. East Coast Park

[caption id="attachment_287" align="aligncenter" width="1800"] Image Credit: Soak In Singapore[/caption]

https://www.instagram.com/p/_61bx2mTfV/

White sands, palm fringes, blue ocean, sea breeze – what else do you need for a pleasant cycling? East Coast Park’s scenic coastline that stretches over 15 kilometers has dedicated bike trails for couples or families to enjoy fun cycling along the charming beach.

The bike trail at East Coast Park spans all the way to Changi Beach, and you may choose to paddle the whole trail for serious workout, or just some sections for healthy amusement. Furthermore, whenever you need to catch your stamina back, just stop by at the East Coast food centre to enjoy a cup of rejuvenating sugarcane juice.

Oh, at the East Coast Park you can find old McDonald’s, which is a good starting or resting place.

  1. Punggol Waterway

[caption id="attachment_289" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Image Credit: Sgromancing.com[/caption]

https://www.instagram.com/p/_73jkistR1/

For leisure cycling, Punggol Waterway has a lot to offer: well-maintained tracks, green landscape, and gorgeous sunset as a picturesque backdrop. As you paddle, enjoy beautiful scene where sun slowly move back into bed, while the orangy purple pinkish sky are reflected in the water just like a huge mirror.

  1. Bidadari Cemetery and Memorial Garden

https://www.instagram.com/p/y0r_ropfL2/

Maybe sounds a little ghoulish, but actually it can be a fun cycling through this nostalgic lush (defunct) cemetery park! Just paddle deep into Singapore’s colonial history and its Memorial Garden as well! Bring some friends along, or maybe you can ride by yourself to try your guts?

If you are not cycling, Bidadari Cemetery is actually a pretty instagram-worthy spot in Singapore.

  1. Punggol Point

[caption id="attachment_290" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Steel Wool via Flickr[/caption]

https://www.instagram.com/p/96JjElF4b-

https://www.instagram.com/p/2h8R1oGk3k/

How many times you have to stray aside, right and left, when your paddles hit the crowd? That won’t happen at Punggol Point, at the Punggol Promenade Nature Walk. This is not to be mistaken with the Punggol Waterway. Punggol Point has wide pavement for you to enjoy coastline cycling to the fullest. And by the way, it also has lovely jetty to stop by and take a rest. The best thing, you don’t need to bring your bicycle along. They are available for rent.

  1. Changi Boardwalk

https://www.instagram.com/p/_wcH7uoAr3/

https://www.instagram.com/p/9C_9mnhgds/

Well, seaside cycling may have become a sort of trend in Singapore, as Changi Boardwalk offers a leisurely ride, where you can cycle along the coastline, across rough and weathered-look wooden planks on stilts.

At Changi Point Coastal Walk, you can paddle the whole 2.2 kilometers trail, consists a mixture of terrains such as beach, cliff, kelong and along the terrace of a sailing club. Actually, this trail is kinda “connected” with East Coast Park, and you can cycle all the way here from the McDonald’s there.

  1. Pulau Ubin

https://www.instagram.com/p/_iggZEpPYb

https://www.instagram.com/p/__bwpQm7yl/

https://www.instagram.com/p/_x9JeSHn1c/

As one of Singapore’s favorite cycling trails, this nature reserve is quiet, kinda secluded, and, other than the odd mini bus, free of traffic, allowing you to explore and cycle for leisure. Families with tots may paddle peacefully in this leafy Singapore’s last kampong, which can be reached by only 5 minutes boat ride from Changi Point ferry terminal.

For more “serious” workout and adventure, you may join a guided ride-along (starting from SGD50) and explore places off the beaten track, like a rock quarry and inter-tidal area Chek Jawa.

One of the bonus at Pulau Ubin, is that you can rent a bicycle at a cheap price here; a good mountain bike goes at around SGD12 to SGD15 for the whole day.

  1. Marina Bay Sands

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAL6xqxBGP3/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BALcRqBH2Td/

https://www.instagram.com/p/_8fPu9FTb5/

The famous Marina Bay Sands can totally offer you different way of sight-seeing if you are on two wheels. The trail is outlines Marina Bay and expands along Kallang Basin. It has scenic skyline to adore while cycling, a view that all of us are too familiar with.

You may begin at the hotel, and make your way down towards The Helix Bridge before turning to the Singapore Flyer. When you reach Kallang Basin on your right, take an easy riding down onto Nicoll Highway. Once you hit the Merlion, The Singapore Flyer, Helix Bridge, ArtScience Museum and Marina Bay Sands will be in harmony to shape a great panorama.

  1. Hort Park and Southern Ridge

https://www.instagram.com/p/-dpRO9ESL_/

https://www.instagram.com/p/_hZlnDIHPD/

This park is a part of the Southern Ridges that comprises Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Park, with lush and quiet environment to enjoy with family.

If you feel like paddling more, just go through the Southern Ridge to get to the Henderson Wave.

  1. Bedok Reservoir Park

https://www.instagram.com/p/8p3Q4ahyFp

If you are into leisure paddling, just hit Bedok Reservoir Park. The track around the lake, with a mixture of pavement and pebbly path, is just 4.3 kilometers long; provides a good and effortless route for beginners. This kids-friendly track allows you to stop anywhere to let children play. Do remember to keep them away from the edge of reservoir though.

After an exhilarating cycling for an hour or two, spread out a picnic sheet, enjoy the view across the tranquil reservoir while having your meal, or catch sight of some chirping local birds can be fun!

  1. West Coast Park

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAMoQFHK8-G/

https://www.instagram.com/p/_ylWTJLGCa/

The less famous West Coast Park (if compared to its sibling at the eastern part), is actually a great place for some light cycling. Known as ‘Play Centre in the West’, the western part of West Coast Park has been transformed into a place for fun adventure seekers.

It has designated cycling track equipped with playground (to amuse your tots), beach, and white sands. When cycling chase away your stamina, just stop by and find McCafe for a refreshing Himalayan Tea Frappé.

Now those are our 10 recommended places to have a fun cycling in Singapore. If you know any other great places, do share it with us.

10 Things You Never Knew You Can Do At Changi Airport! #7 Is A Must Try!

  1. The Shopping Experience

We’re all aware that there’s shopping to be done at Changi Airport, but did you had any inkling as to how much shopping can be done? The airport carries no less than 400 brands of products from Uniqlo to Cotton On, and the only worry for the shopaholic should be to keep an eye on their boarding time.

[caption id="attachment_235" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Image Credit: retailnews.asia.com[/caption]
  1. Enjoy A Massage

Whether machine-operated or a fish spa massage, Changi Airport offers both for the weary traveller. Those yearning for a human touch can find manicures and pedicures at an Airport Wellness Oasis near Gate D on Level 2.

[caption id="attachment_237" align="aligncenter" width="889"] Image Credit: Adventuresallaround.com[/caption]
  1. Resting Areas

The resting areas are scattered across every terminal of the Changi airport for passengers looking to catch a quick forty winks.

[caption id="attachment_238" align="aligncenter" width="939"] Image Credit: Straits Times[/caption]
  1. Splash Around In The Rooftop Pool

Located at Terminal 1 on Level 3, Changi Airport’s swimming pool boasts a view of the airport runway and parking bays, where hotel residents can order light refreshments at a poolside bar and get a suntan. Non-residents are required to pay a fee of $13.91 for the use of this deluxe pool.

[caption id="attachment_239" align="aligncenter" width="939"] Image credit: ibitimes.co.uk[/caption]
  1. Greenery Within Changi Airport

Singapore is referred to as a ‘Garden City’, so is it any surprise that its very own airport is in abundance of gardens? The national flower deserves its very own garden.

Orchid Garden (Terminal 2 Level 2, Transit Area)

[caption id="attachment_240" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Image Credit: qz.com[/caption]

Sunflower Garden (Terminal 2 Level 3, Transit Area)

Where better for a sunflower garden to be situated than above the airport’s long runways?

[caption id="attachment_241" align="aligncenter" width="844"] Image Credit: AsiaOne [/caption]

Cactus Garden (Terminal 1 Level 3, Transit Area)

Where intellectual thinkers go to do some hard thinking.

[caption id="attachment_242" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Image credit: tripofun[/caption]

Butterfly Garden (Terminal 3 Level 2 and 3, Transit Area)

A beautiful home to hundreds of butterflies, where you’re likely to witness a birth of a butterfly if you’re patient enough.

[caption id="attachment_243" align="aligncenter" width="941"] Image credit: delectant.com[/caption]

Enchanted Garden (Terminal 2 Level 2, Transit Area)

A technogically-operated garden with LED lightings and motion sensors that’s giving natural gardens a run for its money.

  1. Peranakan Woodblock Rub

The Peranakan woodblock rub stations, located in Terminals 1 – 3 at the Changi Airport, is a remembrance to a popular artform in the early days of Singapore where artists used the technique to print text and images onto paper before the invention of modern print. You can make your own woodblock print with icons inspired by pop culture.

[caption id="attachment_245" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Image credit: buzzfeed[/caption]
  1. Singapore’s Tallest Slide

‘The Slide’ is well, the not-so-witty name of a four storey tall tube in Terminal 3, apparently Singapore’s tallest slide according to Changi Airport themselves. A must-ride for the children and the young at heart, or if you’re just fed up with how slow the escalators are.

[caption id="attachment_246" align="aligncenter" width="916"] Image credit: buzzfeed[/caption]
  1. Socialise At The Social Tree

At an airport this lavish, anyone would be brimming with urgency to document their experience. The Social Tree is an interactive structure made up of dozens of television sets and aluminium bars as its ‘trunk’, allowing visitors to capture pictures of themselves and store them as virtual memories via the eight interactive booths surrounding it. Unlike natural trees however, The Social Tree is closed 1am – 5am daily for maintenance purposes.

[caption id="attachment_247" align="aligncenter" width="940"] Image credit: gemfighter28.com[/caption]
  1. Watch a movie in the Entertainment Deck (Terminal 2 Level 3, Transit Area)

Cinemas opened 24/7, decked out with the proper theatric sound systems, cushy seats, the whole works, all free-of-charge. If it was anywhere else, you would have to see it to believe it. You’ll find video gaming consoles too.

[caption id="attachment_248" align="aligncenter" width="859"] Image credit: vietnamcentre[/caption]
  1. Changi airport is almost an art museum in itself

  1. Bonus: A free city tour of Singapore

If you are a transit commuter, you can also register for a free two-hour tour with a selection between the Heritage Tour or a City Lights Tour. Tourists can choose to experience our cultural diversity at the streets of Little India or Chinatown, or if they’d rather, the Singapore Flyer, Esplanade and Gardens by the Bay. But with an airport this magnificent, why bother leaving for the city?

Shin Sapporo’s New Fire And Sake Ramen – For Singapore Adventurous Foodies!

For a while now, Ramen shops have started to sprout up around Singapore, and it’s hard to determine which one is the best since it depends a lot on your taste buds. Earlier last week, we were invited to Shin Sapporo at Orchard Gateway to savour their newly launched menu.

Opened since 2010, home-grown Shin-Sapporo Ramen promises a little taste of Japanese culinary heritage with different soup bases and types of noodles.

New to the menu includes the Sake Ramen ($15.80++) and the Fire Ramen ($15.80++), which are the two dishes that we were particularly excited about.

The Tonkotsu Sake Ramen (original soup version) was served with grilled cha-shu, seaweed, enoki, bamboo shoots, green onions and half ajitama seasoned egg. The thick tonkotsu broth was flavorful and not too greasy, though we found the taste of sake to be too light and subtle. On a side note, you get free top up of noodles with every ramen dish and the starches will definitely fill the big eaters up.

[caption id="attachment_200" align="aligncenter" width="768"] Dry Abura Sake Soba[/caption]

Another thing which we want to highlight is that there’s also a ‘dry’ version Abura Sake Soba. Unlike your usual ramen, the interestingly sweet dish cooked with sake is recommended to those who are more adventurous with their palette. A variety of ingredients, such as grilled cha-shu, enoki, bamboo shoots, green onions and half ajitama seasoned egg are arranged neatly on top of the bed of thin ramen. For garlic lovers, there are fried garlic slices found at each table to give more flavor to the noodles.

Fire Ramen Set On Flames

Initially we thought the Fire Ramen will be spicy and heavily flavour-packed. It came as a surprise to us! Why? Once your order is ready, you have to sit at the counter and the friendly waiter/waitress will hand you an apron, hair-ties and a piece of paper with their very one Fire Ramen Challenge’ rules.

Following that, a senior chef literally set your ramen on fire. Overall, a satisfying bowl of Ramen – noodles were nicely cooked and the soup tasted richer than the previous bowl. However, it seems a bit pricier than other ramen choices available with just slices of cha-shu. The broth was saltier than I preferred and the cha-shu could have be fatter.

Of course, there are great side dishes for sharing:

Butter Hotate (S$ 8.80++)

A mix of scallops and enoki mushrooms cooked with butter on hotplate. The scallops are quite intense buttery, tender and juicy.

Shin-Sapporo Gyoza ($6.80++)

These little pan-fried dumpling with pork are juicy and skin is thin. The vinegar dipping sauce complements each bite really well.

Age Kinoko ($6.80++)

These are small and crunchy shiitake mushroom stuffed with minced crab and prawn and accompanied by a wasabi mayo dip.

We finished off our meal with desserts:

Chocolate Lava Cake ($8.80++)

A dessert for all chocolate lovers. Rich chocolate cake filled with a warm center of molten chocolate and topped with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. Take a bite into the moist cake and let the cold ice cream slowly melt in your mouth.

Match Cream Cake ($8.80++)

Matcha and azuki red beans are always the perfect match. The cake is light and not overly sweet – a perfect balance between the sweetness from the red bean paste and the bittersweet matcha.

Overall, we would give the new menu a high 7 out of 10, and would definitely recommend this place to all our friends.

Sake Ramen and Fire Ramen are available exclusively at Orchard Gateway and Century Square outlets. For more details, visit their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/shinsappororamen

For all of us who have been to Bali, Indonesia, one of the many food we would definitely try is the Naughty Nuri’s famous pork ribs. Available in Bali, Malaysia and Macau, one new country will be added onto the brand’s regional footprint in the new year – as first spotted by LadyIronChef, Naughty Nuri’s will be opening its first restaurant in Singapore at Capitol Piazza in January 2016.

The Naughty Nuri’s brand will be operated by lifestyle group Massive Collective, and its first restaurant will have a dining capacity of 120 seats. According to LadyIronChef, the tentative opening date will be 4th of January, and the menu will sport the similar and familiar dish as those you would get in Bali – a mix of Western and Indonesian dishes. The average spending per person will be around S$40 – S$60.

Here’s a look at the menu in Bali:

When the Downtown Line 1 was launched in December 2013, commuters also enjoyed free rides on the line for the first 11 days.
