There’s A Shop In The CBD That Sells Nine Types Of Avocado Toasts From $5.50

Calling all avocado toast lovers!

If you’re passionate about avocado toast – and really, just avocado anything in general – you’ll love what the people at Avorush are plating up.

[caption id="attachment_31535" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Image Credit: Tastemade[/caption]

A new concept hailing from the land down under, this avocado lover’s heaven is tucked away in Asia Square’s Food Garden, smack dab in the CBD.

With a name like “Avorush”, you more or less know what to expect. Here, they serve – in their own words – “avocado everything”, putting a fresh spin on the classic avocado dishes we’re familiar with.

More of a takeaway spot, Avorush has a small dine-in area that’s perfect for diners who want to sit down for a quick bite during breakfast or lunch, and then rush off to work.

Avocado Toast Galore

If you love your avocado toast, you’ll be ecstatic to know that there are NINE avocado toast options on Avorush’s menu.

Priced affordably from $5.50 – $7.50, you’ll have a hard time picking just one to eat.

One of the bestsellers here is Goodfellas ($6.50), which consists of sourdough toast with fluffy scrambled eggs, feta, rocket, and avocado.

[caption id="attachment_31526" align="alignnone" width="3024"] Avocado & Shrimp (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]

The Avocado & Shrimp ($7.50) is another crowd favourite, consisting of the same sourdough toast with juicy paprika shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and generous cubes of avocado laid over the top.

One of our favourites is Over The Top ($6.50), which comprises a poached egg, tahini, cherry tomatoes, feta, and smashed avocado on a toasted sourdough bread. The toast is super savoury from the tahini sauce, and we love the way it combines with the brightness of the tomatoes and the creaminess of the avocado.

[caption id="attachment_31525" align="alignnone" width="2502"] Over The Top (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]

The sourdough bread used in Avorush’s avocado toast is definitely worth a mention. Not at all tough like some sourdough breads tend to be, the bread has a satisfying crunch when you bite into it, and has a light savoury flavour that complements the avocado and the other ingredients laid over it.

Other options here are the Vegan Stack ($6.50) which contains beetroot hummus, sliced avocado and lemon; and You’re Toast ($6.50), which features Oregano roasted tomatoes and a balsamic glaze on a bed of avocado.

Each portion includes only a single slice of toast, which makes it great for a light bite during breakfast or tea time, but not so great for a full lunch or dinner. That said, you can always double up and order more toast if you’re feeling extra hungry!

[caption id="attachment_31528" align="alignnone" width="2793"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

Whatever you (eventually) decide, pair your avocado toast with a cuppa for the perfect way to start your day! The coffee here is made from freshly roasted coffee beans from Allpress Espresso, flown in from Melbourne.

Avo Beyond The Arvo

At Avorush, avocadoes are not just something you eat for breakfast. The menu is designed such that you can have your avocado all day, everyday, in a variety of ways so you’ll never get bored.

While Avorush’s avocado toasts are available starting from 7.30am, at 11am, their offerings expand to include avocado bowls. You can build your own avo-bowl out of their selection of bases, proteins, toppings, avo specials, and dressings.

[caption id="attachment_31521" align="alignnone" width="2724"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

A regular bowl will cost $9 while a large bowl will set you back $13.

Avo toasts and bowls aside, Avorush also serves avocado milkshakes! Pick from Avo Vanilla ($5.90), Post Workout ($6.90) and Matcha Dream ($6.90).

Oh, and did we mention, they don’t charge GST here? That means the price you see on the menu is exactly what you pay.

Whatever the time of the day, drop by Avorush to get your avo rush – your stomachs will surely thank you for it!

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone has an extraordinary mind. While great at math, he’s not nearly as great when it comes to interpreting daily life. One day, he falls under suspicion of killing his neighbour’s dog and his quest to uncover the real culprit takes him on a journey that upturns his world.

Arts In Your Neighbourhood is back, and this time, it’s taking a journey to the West.

An initiative by the National Arts Council that happens twice a year, Arts In Your Neighbourhood has taken over neighbourhoods like Toa Payoh, Yishun, and Woodlands previously, bringing arts experiences to the doorsteps of Singaporeans living in these areas.

From 9 – 26 November, Arts In Your Neighbourhood is giving Jurong residents the same treatment with its interactive arts programmes that show a different side of Jurong.

Expect visual arts installations, performances, trails, stories, and more by established artists and arts groups happening across Jurong.

Michelin-Starred Tsuta Adds Two Duck Ramen Dishes To Their Menu And It’s Ducking Good

Ramen fans, there’s a new ramen coming to you, and this one comes courtesy of none other than Michelin-starred ramen restaurant Tsuta.

If you’ve been to Tsuta, you’ll know that the limited seating restaurant sees queues daily at both its Orchard and Tai Seng branches. You’ll also know that they serve up sumptuous bowls of their signature fragrant truffle oil blended Shoyu Soba.

[caption id="attachment_31206" align="aligncenter" width="860"] Image Credit: lancescape[/caption]

If you’re a fan of Chef Yuki Onishi’s truffle-y take on Japanese ramen, or just love trying different, novel ramen dishes in general, you’ll love what Chef Yuki Onishi has cooked up just for his Singaporean customers.

An Ode To Duck

For their first year anniversary in Singapore, Tsuta has come up with not one but two ramen dishes, and the star ingredient is a meat we Singaporeans eat plenty of: duck.

Noticing the popularity of the ingredient during his visit to Singapore in 2016, Chef Yuki Onishi decided to create a ramen dish inspired by it. After experimenting with different recipes and cooking methods for a year, he created 2 ramen dishes: the dry Kamo Abura Soba, and Kamo Paitan Soba which is served in soup

[caption id="attachment_31202" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Kamo Abura Soba[/caption]

The Kamo Abura Soba ($10) features noodles that have been marinated with premium shoyu and duck oil. Creamy, with an umami flavour, the ramen noodle comes topped with poached duck breast, baby leaves, crushed roasted cashew nuts and yellow onions. The ramen is served with a separate bowl of clear chicken stock soup.

What we love about this dry ramen is that you can really taste each individual component of the dish. The poached duck breast is slow cooked in shoyu sauce for an extended period of time, and is juicy with a tender bite. The cashew nuts and onions provide a nice contrast, bringing some nuttiness and sharpness to the flavours in the bowl.

The clear soup is also light and refreshing – a nice contrast from the stronger flavours in the ramen.

If you prefer your ramen in soup, you will probably prefer the Kamo Paitan Soba ($11).

[caption id="attachment_31222" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Kamo Paitan Soba[/caption]

This ramen dish features a creamy broth where the flavour of the duck really comes through. A broth that’s not too heavy, it is slow cooked for 5 hours with duck bones and even duck feet, giving it its rich flavour and creamy consistency.

Just like the Kamo Abura Soba, this ramen comes topped with slices of duck breast, baby leaves, cashew nuts, and yellow onions.

While Tsuta is not the only ramen restaurant in Singapore to come up with a duck ramen, we think they’ve nailed it with these delectable new ramen dishes. A dish that celebrates the flavours of duck, this is sure to be a hit with those who love the gamey meat.

These ramen dishes will only be available from 4 November onwards and are exclusively available in Singapore. The next time you’re craving a hearty bowl of ramen, be sure to head down to your nearest Tsuta to eat it!

This Hawker Stall May Be Low-Key, But Its Soy Sauce Chicken Rice Is Hai Kee Amazing

Chicken rice is a dish that’s close to many Singaporeans’ hearts.

A dish that inspires fierce, unwavering loyalty among Singaporeans, many of us chicken rice fans have a favourite stall we rarely stray from.

[caption id="attachment_31026" align="alignnone" width="2936"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

If you love chicken rice, here’s a contender you should definitely check out – Hai Kee.

With two locations – one at Changi and one at Bedok – ‘Hai Kee’, which roughly translates to ‘remember the sea’, is a chicken rice stall that has been around since 1959.

[caption id="attachment_31020" align="alignnone" width="1280"] L-R: Joseph Wang, James Wang (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]

Originally located at Upper Cross Street, this hawker stall is easy to spot with its bright red signboard. Specialising in soy sauce chicken rice, Hai Kee is run by a pair of young hawkers – Joseph Wang and his younger brother, James Wang.

Chicken That’s Soy Delicious

It probably goes without saying that the best-seller at Hai Kee is its signature soy sauce chicken.

A Cantonese style of cooking chicken that involves braising the chicken in soy sauce, Hai Kee’s version is tender and packed with delicious savoury flavour.

The chicken is poached to perfection and is left to rest for a few minutes before serving, which is what gives the meat its tender quality.

[caption id="attachment_31023" align="alignnone" width="3024"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

Choose to have your meat with either rice — cooked in a garlic- and ginger-infused broth and chicken fat — or egg noodles.

As with many other hawker stalls, you can order ‘xiao de‘ (small), ‘zhong de‘ (medium) or ‘da de‘ (large).

The Superior Soy Sauce Chicken Rice is $3.50 for a small serving, $4.50 for a medium serving, and $5.50 for a large serving, while the Superior Soy Sauce Noodle is $3.80, $4.80, and $5.80 for a small, medium, and large serving respectively.

[caption id="attachment_31033" align="alignnone" width="3024"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

Even though the soy sauce chicken is the crowd favourite, Hai Kee’s char siew is an absolute must try.

Roasted in-house, Hai Kee uses pork belly meat to make its char siew. The meat is marinated overnight and is freshly roasted daily with Hai Kee’s secret caramelised sauce. Succulent and bursting with flavour, the meat is the perfect mix of sweet and savoury, and will leave you hankering for more.

The Char Siew Rice is $3.50, $4.50, and $5.50 for a small, medium, and large serving respectively, while the Char Siew Noodle is $3.80, $4.80, and $5.80 for a small, medium, and large serving respectively.

[caption id="attachment_31025" align="alignnone" width="3018"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

Any chicken rice lover worth his salt will know that the sauces are just as important as the flavours on the plate – and Hai Kee’s definitely pack a punch.

If you can’t live without your chilli, dip your meats into Hai Kee’s chilli sauce! Prepared with two varieties of chilli – bird eyed chilli and big red chilli – the sauce is finished off with a dash of lime juice, giving it a bright, zingy twist.

Hai Kee has also created two ginger dipping sauces for its customers. Its ‘sha jiang’ ginger is a chunkier dip that is more reminiscent of the ginger sauce we’re familiar with. Aside from that, Hai Kee has also created a sweet-sour version that goes superbly with its chilli sauce.

Hai Kee also serves roasted pork and vegetables such as Oyster Sauce Vegetables ($3/small, $5/large) and Beansprouts with Cuttlefish ($3/small, $5/large) if you want more variety on your plate.

A New School Brand With Old School Flavour

While Hai Kee has undergone a huge rebranding, ditching its original, more traditional signboard for a modern aesthetic, the food and flavours have not changed; the chicken and roast here taste every bit like the Hai Kee Singaporeans have come to know and love, but with an updated presentation.

[caption id="attachment_31024" align="alignnone" width="2881"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

One thing you’ll notice when you eat at Hai Kee is that, unlike many chicken rice stalls these days, it serves its rice in a bowl. The old way of eating rice, the duo wanted to do this because they felt that the rice is more fragrant when eaten like this, instead of on a plate.

At Hai Kee, the food is served in traditional-style crockery, making you feel as if you’re having a comforting home-cooked meal, while also evoking a sense of nostalgia.

If you’re keen to have a taste of Hai Kee’s chicken rice, be warned — both its Changi and Bedok branches see long queues on weekends, so be prepared to wait! Otherwise, your best bet is to drop in on a weekday.

While Hai Kee may be a little out of the way for some of us, you can rest assured that the trip will be well worth your while. And if you can’t travel out for a taste, hey, they’re on all the food delivery apps – Deliveroo, FoodPanda, honestbee, and UberEATS.

With mouth-watering soy sauce chicken and tasty roasts, you’ll be wanting seconds while you’re at Hai Kee!

Curious to try this experience for yourself?

It’ll cost $69 per person to play, and the price is inclusive of a 15 minute briefing and 30 minutes of actual game play. Look out for Zero Latency’s launch special, where players will only need to pay a discounted rate of $59.

If you’d like to try your hand at more than one game during your session, or want a double session, opt for one of their packages, which allows you to do either of these things at a better rate.

Up to 8 players can play per session, so bear this in mind when you make plans with your mates!

Zero Latency is bringing VR gaming at its finest to Singapore, and we cannot wait to try it. Unfortunately, we still have to wait for a bit before we can get one of those headsets onto our heads, but we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait!

This Sandwich Shack Makes Grilled Cheese Sandwiches That Will Put Your Homemade Ones To Shame

While we all have our own comfort foods, arguably, one of the most comforting things to sink your teeth into is a warm grilled sandwich – specifically, a grilled cheese sandwich.

Lay out some bread, slop on a slice of cheese, pop it in the toaster, and you have yourself a delicious snack that never fails to hit the spot.

[caption id="attachment_31084" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Cassie Ong[/caption]

If you’re a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches, there’s a sandwich shack you need to meet that serves up grilled cheese sandwiches that will put your homemade stacks to shame – 52 Sandwich Shack.

Located at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Center, this takeaway-only sandwich kiosk sells 6 types of sandwiches piled with plenty of the cheesy goodness we all love.

Their sandwiches are hearty, delicious, and sinful AF, and that’s precisely why we love it. Eating healthy can get boring after awhile, no?

Stack ’em Up

A 52 Sandwich Shack original is the 52 Grilled Cheese ($6.90).

[caption id="attachment_31081" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Wei Zhi Chiang[/caption]

This sandwich creation is named after the 52 cheesy experiments it took for the head chef, Chef Daniel, to find the perfect combo of cheese for the local palate. Consisting of 3 different types of cheese – cheddar, mozzarella, and fontina – the trio of cheeses is sandwiched between buttery, toasty brioche buns.

This sandwich is all about the cheese, so don’t be surprised to find that there is no meat in it!

Can’t do without your meat? Then try the Wagyu Beef With Onsen Egg ($11.90)!

[caption id="attachment_31082" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @toroamtheworldeats[/caption]

Now, this is a fun sandwich to eat.

The Wagyu beef sandwich is served separate from the Onsen egg, which comes in a small container. The sliced beef is tender and topped with tangy balsamic onions and 52 Sandwich Shack’s signature combo of cheeses.

Dip your sandwich into the egg or break your yolk and drizzle all that good stuff all over your beef!

[caption id="attachment_31083" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @thechoyalicious[/caption]

The flavours come together very nicely, making for a hearty meal that will fill you up for quite awhile.

If you’re not into beef, maybe you’ll like their Pulled-Pork Yakiniku ($8.90).

[caption id="attachment_31086" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Ken Poon[/caption]

With a generous amount of marinated pulled pork, pickles, and their triple cheese combo stacked between warm brioche buns, this sandwich is heavenly. The tangy, slight sourness of the pickles complements the heavier flavour of the pork, making for a delightful marriage of flavours.

Mac & cheese fans, have you ever tried mac & cheese in a sandwich? We know, it sounds like a great idea and a terrible idea at the same time.

[caption id="attachment_31087" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Natalie Wong[/caption]

The Bacon Mac & Cheese ($7.90) is literally a sandwich containing mac & cheese, with some bacon bits to give it a savoury kick. A carb on carb sandwich that’s the definition of sinful, try this if you want to go all out – calorie-wise – in treating yourself.

Be sure to dig in immediately after you order it so the mac & cheese is still warm inside the sandwich!

If you find yourself in the CBD either for work or for pleasure, be sure to make a detour to Raffles City to grab yourselves these decadent sandwiches! A guilty pleasure that’s super affordable, this spot is definitely a must-try for those who love cheese.
