The Confessions Of An Artist

Professions in the arts sector may not come to mind when people discuss career options in Singapore. In fact, when you speak to any adult born before the ‘90s, they might even tell you that working in the arts sector isn’t a “real job”.

We hear from 5 artists about the misconceptions people have about their career choice, and why they find their job worthwhile.

1. Your Profession Is Frivolous

[caption id="attachment_33795" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: @yellowmushmellow[/caption]

“People used to tell me that my job is child’s play, that it’s frivolous because all I do is “draw” and that it’s not productive.

I disagree –  I believe that art can help to draw attention to taboo issues in society and help to create conversation.”

At the beginning of my career, acquiring projects was a problem, but now the biggest issue is finding a balance between what I want to create versus what others expect me to create.

To me, the biggest compliment is when people tell me that they can relate to my illustrations and artworks.

I have a permanent mural at The Fullerton Gallery, and I remember watching people appreciate my artwork when I was at the opening of the gallery. That was a very significant moment for me.”

  • Aida, Illustrator

2. Can You Do It For Free?

[caption id="attachment_33796" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: @elwm.art[/caption]

“Some clients have insisted that my art be created for free – or at my own cost – because it’s a community project, and within unrealistic timelines too. This undermines the value of the artist and the art that he/she creates.

Despite that, I still love working in the art industry. I conduct community workshops in heartlands and community centres. Some of the workshops that I’ve conducted are for Art Outreach at Gillman Barracks and Act3 International at ION Art Gallery.

Most of my workshops are catered for residents, ranging from children to senior citizens.

I feel fulfilled because I get the opportunity to inspire and influence people who attend my art workshops or volunteer at my community projects.

There was a family who told me that my art helped to bring them closer to one another. There was also a lady who told me that she was touched by my work because it depicted sights she could only see in her hometown back in India. These are moments that I live for.”

  • Eunice, Multidisciplinary Artist

3. But You Don’t Look Like An Artist

[caption id="attachment_33797" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Image Credit: @sarahchoojing[/caption]

“I’m a multidisciplinary artist and I’ve been developing my practice for almost 10 years now.

However, till today, people still occasionally tell me things like “But you don’t look like an artist” which I find offensive because there is no such thing as a standard “artist” look.

My work usually depicts identifiable moments and characters within contemporary urban society, suggesting a plethora of private and often solitary narratives.

Nothing beats that rewarding feeling whenever I complete an artwork and seeing people appreciate it.”

  • Sarah, Multidisciplinary Artist

4. He Mentioned That He Can Recreate My Artwork Using A Photo-Editing App

[caption id="attachment_33798" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Ali Hanafiah[/caption]

“I’ve been in the creative field for almost 13 years now, working as a Senior Graphic Designer and Photographer.

I picked up drawing when I was a kid because my mother realised that I didn’t enjoy reading and gave me comic books instead.

When I first started working, the feedback I received wasn’t good and people would tell me that I cannot ‘make it’ in Singapore if I remain in this line.

The worst thing I’ve ever heard was someone mention that he can recreate my artwork with a photo-editing app. But I don’t let that get to me.

I love to sketch my friends during their birthdays, and watching them receive and love the sketch really brings me joy. At least I know that I brightened someone else’s day.”

  • Ali, Senior Graphic Designer/Photographer

5. People Think That My Art Is Vandalism

[caption id="attachment_33799" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: ZERO (Zul Othman)[/caption]

“I’ve been a full-time artist since 2003, and I’m coming up to my 15th year in the industry. I am probably the only artist with a background in the graffiti and street art scene, to have won the National Arts Council Young Artist Award.

I remember once when I was painting in the middle of Orchard Road, I overheard a father tell his son that I was vandalising. There was another incident when I was told that my profession was not “real work”.

I feel sorry for people who have such a narrow-minded mentality as to what constitutes as a “real job”.

The most encouraging thing I’ve heard was that my work and what I do as an artist and researcher is significant to my community and in the advocacy of street art and graffiti practices in South East Asia.

My advice to young aspiring artists out there, is to stay humble and keep on learning.”

  • Zul Othman (ZERO), Visual Artist

Lose Yourself In Eminem’s “Mom’s Spaghetti” Pop-Up In Singapore This April

If you’re a fan of Eminem, “Mom’s Spaghetti” should trigger something in you.

[caption id="attachment_33805" align="aligncenter" width="702"] Image Credit: Consequence Of Sound[/caption]

The dish stems from his iconic track “Lose Yourself” and now, Eminem is serving the actual spaghetti as part of a promotional campaign for his latest album, Revival.

The first Eminem pop-up serving Spaghetti and Meatballs was held in December in Detroit where merchandise was sold along with to-go containers of classic spaghetti and spaghetti sandwiches.

Tasty Street ‘Spoils Market’ With Wagyu Beef, Iberico Pork Rice Bowls Under $7

We’ve seen many stalls selling ricebowls. From poké bowls to fancy Japanese donburi, we’ve seen it all.

Now, a new player steps into the ring. Meet Tasty Street.

[caption id="attachment_33772" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Tasty Street – Our Little Red Dot[/caption]

Tasty Street was started by 3 friends who met during their Polytechnic days, using modern cooking techniques to combine local flavours and premium ingredients into a grain bowl.

Premium Ingredients, Affordable Prices

Each grain bowl comes with a protein of your choice with a paired homemade sauce, brown and pearl rice base, vegetable of the day, a sour or spicy side of the day, charred sweet corn, and a beautifully poached onsen egg.

Their bestsellers are the Wagyu Beef Bowl, Iberico Lor Bah Bowl, and the Sous Vide Chicken Breast Bowl with Truffled Hotplate Tofu Sauce.

[caption id="attachment_33776" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Bestsellers at Tasty Street[/caption]

The Sous Vide Chicken Breast Bowl with Truffled Hotplate Tofu Sauce ($6.50) comes with their signature Truffled Hotplate Tofu Sauce, which still retains a strong taste of the hot bean paste used as the base for the sauce.

[caption id="attachment_33773" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Sous Vide Chicken Breast Bowl With Truffled Hotplate Tofu Sauce ($6.50)[/caption] [caption id="attachment_33777" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The chicken breast wasn’t dry (thankfully) and retained its moisture because of the Sous Vide cooking method. It was a little gamey, as all poached chicken do.

However, the truffled hotplate tofu sauce does its job well, masking most of the gamey taste of the chicken breast.

The Wagyu Beef Bowl ($6.50) uses premium Australian Wagyu beef, grilled and served with Asian black pepper sauce.

This is a crowd favourite and sells out fast.

[caption id="attachment_33771" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Wagyu Beef Bowl ($6.50)[/caption] [caption id="attachment_33778" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

The wagyu beef was perfectly grilled to medium rare doneness and was still pink in the centre. If you’re like me and prefer meat to be cooked through, then you’re the exception rather than the norm.

Finally, the Iberico Lor Bah Bowl ($6.50).

[caption id="attachment_33774" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Iberico Lor Bah Bowl ($6.50)[/caption] [caption id="attachment_33775" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Look at the fattiness of the Iberico pork[/caption] [caption id="attachment_33779" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Premium Iberico pork is slow-braised for 48 hours to create this sinful dish. The resulting braising liquid better known as Lor, is sweet with a tinge of bitterness that doesn’t overshadow the Iberico pork and isn’t jelak either.

The Iberico pork lives up to its name with a perfect balance of fat to lean meat ratio and is so tender that it barely holds its shape when held with chopsticks.

While the stars of the rice bowls are the proteins, the sides are not neglected either. The vegetables and sides are rotated daily and they serve to complement the proteins, so the rice bowls don’t end up becoming jelak.

The charred sweet corn is a mainstay in the rice bowls and are so good that customers have ordered just the corn alone. Yes, you can do that for just $1.

Their Buona Vista outlet only offers these 3 bestsellers.

The outlet at Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre has a more extensive menu, with a vegetarian Deep Fried Tofu Bowl ($5.50) and 2 seafood options in the Griddled Prawn Bowl ($6.50) that comes in 2 types of sauces.

It’s hard to find a hawker that offers rice bowls made with premium ingredients, and at the price that Tasty Street offers, no less.

While Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre might be at the opposite end of the island for me, I would gladly head back to Tasty Street just for another taste of their addictive rice bowls.

I cannot wait to see what other creations they might come up with in future.

This Joint Fuses Local Flavours Into Pizza And It’s DePizza We Need

Pizza is one of our favourite comfort foods. From standard pizzas, to Korean-style Chicago deep-dish pizzas, to dessert pizzas, it’s hard to top the flavours and styles we have.

However, DePizza bravely steps into the arena, armed with their own unique pizza flavours.

Asian Flavours Meets Italian Classic

DePizza, located along Boat Quay, is a newly-opened pizza joint serving up an array of interestingly Asian pizza flavours among the classics.

[caption id="attachment_33712" align="aligncenter" width="813"] Image Credit: DePizza[/caption]

Their Nasi Lemak Pizza ($24) is made with coconut cream-infused dough, slathered with their homemade sambal paste, topped with chicken, fried egg, cucumbers, cheese and ikan bilis!

[caption id="attachment_33714" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Xin Min[/caption]

The only components missing from this Nasi Lemak adaptation, are the rice and peanuts. But we’re not complaining. We’d take this pizza over McDonald’s Nasi Lemak burger ANY DAY.

Another interesting concoction is the GLY Pizza ($22). In case you’re wondering, GLY stands for Gu Lou Yok, aka Sweet and Sour Pork.

[caption id="attachment_33713" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Ang Yun Xuan[/caption]

Yes, this is a Sweet and Sour pork pizza. Generous chunks of pork, pineapples, peppers and onions, sit atop a bed of cheese and sweet and sour sauce. This is sin.

This is our favourite, the Chilli Crab Manzza ($26). We’ll get to its name in a bit.

[caption id="attachment_33715" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Dex Neo[/caption]

This Manzza is generously slathered in chilli crab sauce and topped with onions, cheese and REAL crab meat. Not those cheap sticks of artificial crab. Also, it’s called a Manzza because of its Mantou crust.

Absolute genius. What else could possibly pair better with chilli crab besides mantou?

If you don’t fancy any of their local-inspired flavours, they also offer classic pizza flavours such as Pepperoni, Four Cheese, and Hawaiian.

For those of you who are looking for sides, DePizza has mussels with white wine and fresh herbs, named “These Mussels” ($20 for 500g, $38 for 1kg) and the Fat Die Fries ($14) which is their version of Poutine fries.

[caption id="attachment_33716" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Ang Chong Kiat[/caption]

You can choose to top up $3 to add ground beef or sausage topping to your “beef sauce and melted cheese-loaded” Fat Die Fries.

If no-frills, good pizza is what you’re searching for, head to DePizza to get your fix. No regrets.
