These Innovative Kickstarter Products Show That S’poreans Have Brilliant Ideas Too

Ever since crowdfunding website Kickstarter started, ordinary people with great ideas but without the budget to bring them to life have found the perfect way to do so.

Today, we highlight some refreshing and innovative Singaporean Kickstarter products that will not only make your eyes pop, you will also want to shell out money to get your hands on them!

1. KIN Wallet

2. WeatherHYDE

[caption id="attachment_23527" align="alignnone" width="1500"]Innovative WeatherHYDE tent Image Credit: billionBricks[/caption]

Ashton Kutcher described WeatherHYDE as “innovation at its finest”.

Indeed, this fully insulated, lightweight tent is a powerful tool that has the potential to save the lives of the homeless and vulnerable living in extreme weather.

One of the key features of the tent is its triple layer skin. It blocks light, thus eradicating any embarrassing shadows and making it women-friendly. The fact that the tent is fully enclosed also gives its inhabitants maximum privacy.

Additionally, the tent will only take a person 15 mins to install, without any tools!

Non-profit organisation billionBricks has already launched WeatherHYDE’s first pilot test in Delhi, India in 2016, giving homeless individuals their first homes. We foresee many more organisations following suit when they realise how useful this invention is.

3. LIMPEH SAYS

[caption id="attachment_23529" align="alignnone" width="5000"]LIMPEH Says Singapore card game Image Credit: Zyrup[/caption]

Morally wrong but politically correct.

According to the game’s creators, this is the ideology behind this 18 and above only card game.

To say the game is tongue-in-cheek is an understatement. There is some seriously saucy content within these cards, all in the name of fun.

Playing the game is easy. For every round, one player, a.k.a the “Limpeh”, draws a Red Card. The rest of the players will answer the question posed in the card with their best White Card. The questions range from food, National Service to something as vague as “what do I think about to calm down?”. The Limpeh will then choose the funniest card combination as the winner.

Showering after a tiring gym session can be a chore. This is especially so when you have to bend down and fumble around for your shampoo and bodywash products.

With XUBE, the inventor aims to solve this problem.

XUBE is a portable and sleek toiletries dispenser that unrolls and sticks to any smooth surface. Simply fill it with your shower products and you can start using it at your comfort!

6.  INNI Nails

[caption id="attachment_23537" align="alignnone" width="1552"]INNI Nails customisable nail art Image Credit: Kickstarter[/caption]

This last product on our list is a dream innovation for women – imagine creating a one-of-a-kind nail design in the comfort of your own home!

This special software allows you to upload any image from your computer or the Internet, and use brushes and gradient tools to create a unique nail design. One user even created an eye-catching nail art design using her family photos!

However, if design is not your cup of tea, don’t worry. You can select from existing designs on the INNI Nail Studio program.

Kudos to the brilliant inventors who created all these amazing Kickstarter products! Who knew so many of these little things we’ve grown accustomed to doing everyday like watering plants and sorting cash could be eliminated with just a little bit of creativity?

We certainly hope we can look forward to more innovative products from these creators!

7 Classic Threats Only Singaporean Mothers Use To Scare Us Into Submission

Remember those classic threats our Singaporean mothers used on us to force us to obey them? Our mums seem to have that magical ability to make us complete tasks that we dread – homework, cleaning up our rooms, household chores, etc.

The best thing about Singaporean mothers? They do not even need to lift a finger, sometimes just one look coupled with the threat is enough to scare us into action and submission.

At Discover SG, we take a closer look at some of the classic threats our Singaporean mothers have used, for nostalgia’s sake. P.S we know some of you may still be under the spell of these threats. Good luck.

Singaporean Mothers’ Classic Threats: A Recipe for Obedience

1. If you don’t behave, I will call “Mata” to catch you.

[caption id="attachment_21219" align="alignnone" width="1444"]classic threats Singaporean moms use Credit: Classic threats Singaporean moms use - roadsweeper Credit: Yoshi Today[/caption]

We are not sure how this threat came about. Was it because a mother saw a road sweeper and opportunistically used him/her to warn a lazy child to study hard?

Regardless of the threat’s origins or whether it’s morally right to make such comments, our moms say this with our interests in mind –  they genuinely believe that doing well in school will help us become successful in life.

3. If you don’t finish your food/eat your vegetables, you will get *gasp* pimples.

[caption id="attachment_21794" align="alignnone" width="1286"]Mom knows best Credit: child with playstation Credit: Youtube[/caption]

This is another classic mom quote. Separation from our favourite toy/game is as bad as going cold turkey. In fact, we still see
When this situation occurs, some of us will get creative by hiding all the canes in the hopes of avoiding the unspeakable when dad comes home.

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures.

6. (Insert your full name), you better…. (insert action mum wants you to take)

When mum calls your full name, you know you are in hot soup.

If you’re still not behaving as she wants, mum may proceed to the next step below.

7. I am going to count to three…you better…

Numbers have never sounded as frightening as when they came out of our mums’ mouths.

[caption id="attachment_22337" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Credit:
dramafever.com[/caption]

We’ve all been scolded by our mums and while we may not always agree with what they say or do, deep down, we know they mean well. So, hang in there, if you still have to endure the classic threats by Singaporean mums.

As mums always say, it is “all for your own good”.

10 Jaw-droppingly Strange Items On Carousell That Will Make You Go WTH!

As you return home, your mom screams at you while she is doing spring cleaning, “Ah boy ah, you bought so many caps last time. You only have one head, what are you going to do with all these caps?!” The nagging continues for another 5 mins until inspiration strikes.

“Mom, I can sell it on Carousell! I just have to take a picture and upload it online” you say.

Does this situation sound familiar to you?

When Carousell first launched, everyone rejoiced as its easy-to-use platform is convenient for selling and buying knick knacks. All you need to do is snap, chat and voilà your item is sold!

While it is true that you can score some useful items at a bargain, you may also be surprised by some of the strange items on sale.

Be prepared, our discoveries below will make your jaws drop and eyes pop.

Weirdness on sale: Strange items/Antiques on Carousell

1. Famous Trump Toilet Paper Roll ($18.88)

[caption id="attachment_20597" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Carousell trump toilet paper Credit: Amazon[/caption]

Seller’s description: “Donald Trump Humour Toilet Paper Roll Novelty Funny Gag Gift Dump with Trump.”

With this roll of toilet paper, everyone will have the chance to get to know President Elect Donald Trump “at a deeper/intimate level”. We say buy this if Trump bashing is your thing.

2. Boyfriend ($0)

This is certainly one human item that left us speechless. At $0, this item is waiting for the right girl to take it off the shelf.

Seller’s description: “Virgin. Has very exaggerated reactions. Current PES E soldier. Drinks a lot of water. Shits white. Best friends with the other 2 boyfriends up for grabs. Calls people for a living. Note not a telemarketer. All A student. Potential class 3A driver. No, this is not a sale but a matchmaking. Disclaimer: no refunds. Missing gall bladder.”

Apart from the aforementioned item, the seller also has two more $0 boyfriend listings for you to check out. While stocks last.

3. Breast enlargement pump with twin flanged cups for superior suction/electric air pump machine ($59.99)

[caption id="attachment_20594" align="alignnone" width="1000"]Carousell breast pump Credit: Link

4. NTUC bonus points ($5)

Seller’s description: “Selling 10 bonus points for 5$, postage included. Use the points to get hefty discounts on Phillips appliances such as toaster, blender, kettle, air fryer.”

Know someone who has sworn his/her allegiance to NTUC for the rest of his/her life? This will be the best gift for him/her.

Link

5. Vintage GV Minions Movie Ticket ($10)

Seller’s description: “VINTAGE COLLECTIBLE”

The Minions movie was shown one year ago so we were scratching our heads when we saw the label “vintage”. In any case, we can all start selling our used movie tickets. Lelong lelong, anyone wants to buy from us?

Link

6. Outdoor Portable Female Urinal Device ($13)

Seller’s description: “[X’mas Promo – 2pcs in 1 box Deal] A female urination device (also called FUD) that allows you to urinate while standing up. Ideal for camping, hiking or places where there are no proper toilet facilities or have poor and disgusting sanitation. Discreet, hygienic and flexible. Made of medical grade silicone. Just lower your panty and put the FUD against your body forming a seal, aim and pee. Dispose of it after use or clean and reuse as you like. Practice a time or two and you’ll pee like the men!”

When we first read this, our eyes popped!

This could be a #life-saver when you go camping or when there’s a crazy long queue outside the ladies. And of course, if you want to learn how to pee like a man – like what the seller said.

7. A packet of water lettuce

Seller’s description: “I have a big bag of water plants to let go. There are no snail or any pest that come with the plant. As I put in my organic water plant fertilizer and these plants just overgrown, so selling to allow my fishes to breath better !”

This is certainly one strange listing. According to the seller’s disclaimer, the seller is also not quite sure if these plants are really water lettuce, so buy at your own risk.

Link

8. Rainbow slime ($3)

Seller’s description: “VV PRETTY ISTG”

This reminded us of the play-doh that we used to play with when we were young.

Seller obviously needs to work harder on the rainbow, because real rainbow slimes look like that:

[caption id="attachment_20322" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Carousell rainbow slime Credit: Youtube[/caption]

Nonetheless, the price is cheap – $3 a piece so if you are adventurous, you can chat with the seller to find out more.

Link

9. Victoria’s Secret paper bag with tissue ($2)

This listing gives all the shopaholics hope to recoup their losses from crazy shopping sprees.

Seller’s description: “Small size from VS”

After you buy, buy, buy, you can stem the bleed of your wallet by trying to sell your paper bags.

Link

10. Old Brass Spittoon/chamber pot ($125)

Seller’s description: “Diameter 22cm. Ht20”

Alas, we have saved the best for the last. This is the highest priced item on our list and it sure is a heavyweight.

A look at the seller’s items shows that he/she specialises in vintage products.

However, there is no indication of how old this spittoon is and we don’t dare to imagine how many people have used it.

We hope this list of strange items people sell on Carousell will inspire you. When you have something you don’t need, you know where to sell them.

Riverside Grilled Fish – For Lovers Of Tongue-Numbing And Spicy Ma La Goodness!

Singaporeans love their Ma La dishes and steamboat. So much so that many restaurants specialising in Si Chuan or Chong Qing cuisine have set up shop in our sunny little island. Riverside Grilled Fish 江边城外 is one of the latest restaurants to take the bait and join the fray. It specialises in Chong Qing style grilled whole fish.

Discover SG has got the scoop on it and we are here to share more.

Riverside Grilled Fish’s History

Riverside Grilled Fish was founded by two friends who happened to try grilled fish topped with Ma La sauce while travelling in Wushan Town, Chong Qing.

[caption id="attachment_18809" align="aligncenter" width="1500"] Grilled Fish with Double Cut Red and Green Chillies Sauce[/caption]

Needless to say, both of them were so taken with the robust flavours of the grilled fish that they set up their first restaurant in Beijing in 2005. Their restaurants all over China see long queues every day, much like what we experience at Hai Di Lao here in Singapore.

The rest as they say, is history.

Have your fish and eat it

Diners can choose from 4 types of locally sourced saltwater fishes priced between $35 and $42.

These include red tilapia, sea bass, black promfret and garoupa. The chef will cook the fish in the sauce of your choice.

Riverside Grilled Fish offers 8 sauces for you to choose from.

According to the team at Riverside Grilled Fish, their Signature Fragrant Spicy Sauce (spicy and sweet) is a must try!

[caption id="attachment_18813" align="aligncenter" width="2000"]riverside-grilled-fish-ma-la-sauce Riverside Grilled Fish – Ma La Sauce[/caption]

For those who die die must eat something spicy for every meal, the Ma La sauce is specially concocted for you!

However, if you can’t take spicy food at all, opt for the black bean sauce. It is the only non-spicy sauce in the menu.

[caption id="attachment_18773" align="alignnone" width="1654"]Riverside Grilled Fish in black bean sauce Riverside Grilled Fish – Black Bean Sauce[/caption]

Once you have decided the fish and sauce of your choice, you can choose the ingredients to go with your fish.

Riverside Grilled Fish offers 18 items priced from $2.50 to $4.50 per dish. These include sausages, pork belly, tofu sheets and flat vermicelli.

Side dishes

The Si Chuan Crispy Duck ($12.80) is a must try, because it looks oh-so-tender on the inside, yet so crispy on the outside!

According to the Riverside Grilled Fish team, the duck is first marinated in Juniper spice, then steamed. Lastly, it is deep fried for that crispy taste and golden brown exterior.

Another item you’ll love is Si Chuan flat noodles ($4.80).

The translucent looking flat noodles is made with quality soya beans directly sourced from Si Chuan. This explains its chewy texture. The red sauce of the flat noodles is spicy yet sour, which is refreshing to the palate!

Finally, end your meal with the popular pan-fried rice cake with soya powder ($6.80).

The rice cake is first pan fried with eggs then sprinkled with soya powder.
