These Oishii Green Tea Desserts Will Make You Feel Matcha-m You’re In Japan

Matcha is love. Matcha is life.

Anyone with an obsession with matcha as unhealthy as ours will probably attest to the truth of this statement.

In the past couple of years, we’ve seen more and more Japanese joints setting up shop in Singapore. What that also means is more matcha-centric creations available right here on our shores. From hot lattes to cold parfaits, there are so many different ways to satisfy your matcha craving these days.

We rounded up a list of 7 places to get your hit of matcha, and we think you’ll love what we have in store for you.

1. Sun with Moon

This popular spot in town is well-known for its exquisite bento sets and signature kamameshi dishes. But something not as many people know is it dishes up some mean matcha flavoured desserts!

2. Non Entrée Dessert Café

If you haven’t heard of Non Entrée Dessert Café, where you have you been?

This dessert joint along up-and-coming hipster area, Rangoon Road, serves gorgeous cakes, and desserts with a dramatic flair.

Known for their unique local ice cream flavours (think: kaya toast ice cream) and deceptive bak chor mee dessert, one of their other signature items is the Avalanche Dessert.

[caption id="attachment_27131" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Matcha Avalanche (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

For matcha lovers, Non Entrée’s Matcha Avalanche ($13.90) does not disappoint!

Photogenic, tasty, and a joy to watch in action, you and your friends will be fighting over who gets to do the honours. The matcha lave cake sits atop an almond nougatine which covers the bowl. Slice into the cake, and watch the matcha lava flow into the bowl, onto the roasted green tea ice cream and chocolate soil mixture underneath.

With its explosion of flavours and textures, this unique dish is definitely a winner!

4. Kooks Creamery

At this humble café in Serangoon, they serve up the delicious combo of cookies and ice cream.

You’ve heard of lava cakes, lava cream puffs… but have you heard of the lava cookie? The lava cookie is Kooks Creamery’s spin on the fun lava trend. A Matcha Molten Cookie will set you back $5.50, and it comes in a chocolate flavour too.

[caption id="attachment_27132" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Lava Cookie Set (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

We recommend the Lava Cookie Set ($8.50), which consists of a molten cookie topped with a scoop of ice cream. Not enough matcha? Double up on matcha by pairing your cookie with Matcha Ice Cream ($3.60 per scoop, + $0.50 for premium flavours). After all, is there such a thing as too much matcha?

[caption id="attachment_27133" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Iced Matcha Latte with Green Tea Flavoured Softee (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

In the sweets department, some of the crowd-pleasers include the Iced Matcha Latte with Green Tea Flavoured Softee ($9.30), and the Matcha Pot-baked Soufflé ($10.80).

[caption id="attachment_27134" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Pancake Soufflé Style with Matcha and Ogura Bean Paste (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

One of their specials is the Pancake Soufflé Style with Matcha and Ogura Bean Paste ($13.50). This fluffy soufflé pancake is served with matcha sauce, black beans, mochi skin and matcha ice cream. Because they’re freshly made on the spot, you’ll have to wait for about 20 minute for this. If you ask us, it’s completely worth the wait!

As its name suggests, Maccha House is a haven for all matcha connoisseurs–self-proclaimed or otherwise. Offering a wide array of matcha drinks and desserts, you’d be hard pressed to find a matcha menu as extensive as this!

[caption id="attachment_27135" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Matcha Chocolate Parfait (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

West Your Case, East-siders – You’re Missing Out On These 8 Dessert Spots At Jurong

Gone are the days when Jurong was an ulu place no one would travel out to.

After undergoing a huge redevelopment, the Jurong East area now has everything you could possibly want and need–movie theatres, gyms, shops, dining options…

Once an area that lagged behind the other parts of Singapore in terms of food fads and good food offerings in general, these days, Jurong East has plenty of tasty nosh to offer–including desserts. Whether you love discovering new dessert spots, are always on the lookout for novel desserts, or just have a sweet tooth, we’ve got you West-siders covered.

Here are 8 delicious dessert spots to visit to sweeten up your day!

Westgate

1. Bojio Café

Located in a non-descript corner of Westgate, Bojio Café doesn’t boast the same striking exterior as its neighbours. But as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover, because the good stuff lays within. With a diverse, Insta-worthy menu, you’ll find sweet treats like fancy Milkshakes, Lava Toasts and Shibuya Toasts on their list of offerings.

A definite must-try is the Lava Toast with Mentaiko. The slightly salty mentaiko (marinated roe of pollock and cod), typically found in sushi, is an unusual choice to go with the lava toast. And yet somehow, it works!

[caption id="attachment_27037" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple[/caption]

The surface of the toast, covered with a generous amount of mentaiko is lightly torched to give it that charred flavour and appearance. Slice into the crispy toast and mentaiko mayonnaise comes oozing out–a sinful indulgence indeed.

The toast also comes with a single scoop of Gula Melaka ice cream, which is not cloyingly sweet. Choose from the Original toast ($15.90) and the Charcoal toast ($16.90).

With 12 different fillings/ways to have your lava toast, including Thai Milk Tea, Salted Egg, and Peanut Butter, there’s no doubt you’ll find something you like here!

2. Nunsaram Korean Dessert Café

While some might say bingsu was so 2016, we say given Singapore’s scorching weather, it’ll never run out of style.

[caption id="attachment_27039" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Slyzor[/caption]

You can never go wrong with the classic Injeolmi flavour ($12.90). Dusted with a copious amount of Injeolmi (roasted soya bean powder), and topped with cashew nuts, almond flakes and Korean rice cakes, this is perfect for those of you who don’t like your desserts too sweet.

[caption id="attachment_27040" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple[/caption]

Alternatively, get the Sweet Potato Bingsu ($14.90), a unique flavour you won’t find in most bingsu cafés. The purple doesn’t just make the dish look pretty, it also whets your appetite. With soft and chewy sweet potato cubes scattered over a bed of finely shaved ice and smooth sweet potato paste, it’s a must try for the more adventurous eaters!

JEM

1. Poppy Pops

Poppy Pops is a hidden JEM in Jurong (get it?). Located one level above JEM’s food court (Cookhouse by KouFu), you probably won’t know about this little spot unless you’ve passed by it on your way to the BCA/AVA Service Centre.

[caption id="attachment_27041" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Poppy Pops Facebook[/caption]

Serving up pretty DIY popsicles, every ‘pop’ is made in-house, with no preservatives or artificial flavourings.

Their popsicles come in two types–Classic ($4.80) and Premium ($5.80). Whichever you pick, you get to choose a topping and coating to go with it. Any additional toppings or coatings will cost you $0.50 each.

One of the best-selling flavours at Poppy Pops is Cheesecake. Thick, luscious, and tasting just like cheesecake, it goes amazingly with a coating of white chocolate and crushed cookies. Need we say more?

[caption id="attachment_26984" align="aligncenter" width="656"] Image Credit: Website

2. Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert

If you love traditional Chinese desserts, you’ll love good old Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert, a place that sells a good selection of both hot and cold desserts.

[caption id="attachment_26986" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert Facebook[/caption]

The SK Mango Pomelo Saga ($4.20) is everything mango pomelo sago should be–creamy, smooth, sweet, sour, and with plenty of texture.

The Mango Glutinous Rice Roll ($4) is stuffed to the brim with fresh mangoes, delivering a burst of flavour with every bite. The chewy rice roll is sprinkled with specks of coconut, giving it a slight crunch.

Address:
JEM, 50 Jurong Gateway Road, #B1-K1, Singapore 609690
Opening Hours: Daily, 11am – 1030pm

Nutella and banana is a combination you can NEVER go wrong with. The Choco Nana Crepe ($4.30) will make you feel like a kid again, with its simple ingredients and comforting flavours.

For something more savoury, try the Ramly Crepe ($4.70). Yup, you read that right. Ramly, as in Ramly burger. The Ramly Crepe is what would happen if someone made a Ramly burger in crepe form. Surprisingly, the barbecue sauce and mayonnaise complemented the thin, crispy crepe well. The ingredients–ham, egg and cheese–were also not at all overwhelming.

If you’re planning on making a trip here, remember to bring tissues. Digging into these crepes will be a messy affair, so don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Ned’s Crepe
Address:
JCube, 2 Jurong East Central 1, #02-66, Singapore 609731

2. One Ice Café

Another bingsu café on the list, One Ice Café serves the most value for money bingsu you can find in Singapore. Affordable and tasty, it’s no wonder this café is a popular haunt among students.

[caption id="attachment_26991" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple[/caption]

For a fool-proof option, try the Oreo Bingsu. For $6.80, there’s so much Oreo in the bingsu, you’ll find yourself eating more Oreo crumbs than shaved ice–perfect for one of those days when you just need to treat yo’self.

[caption id="attachment_26992" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Justin Teo[/caption]

Another go-to flavour is the traditional Patbingsu ($6.80), which comes served with crunchy golden cornflakes. With sweet azuki red beans and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, this bingsu is the perfect way to chase your blues away.

3. Dofu

Dofu, which sounds like ‘Dou-fu’ (Mandarin for ‘beancurd’) does not sell beancurd. Instead, it serves homemade Black Soy Ice Cream.

[caption id="attachment_26994" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple[/caption]

This lightly sweetened vegan ice cream is made with soy beans and bamboo charcoal. Beneath the beautiful black swirl lies a layer of beancurd pudding. The silky and creamy soft serve complements the smooth pudding perfectly, making it a delight to savour slowly.

If you’re a purist and like your ice cream with ice cream and nothing else, you can also opt to have 100% ice cream.

IMM

1. Food Lovers Only (FLO)

Established by the Manuka Group, Food Lovers Only (FLO) is a Halal certified Korean restaurant that serves Western-fusion cuisine. Here, there’s no GST or service charge–what you see on the menu is exactly what you pay.

One thing we love about this café is that it serves many interesting cake flavours.

[caption id="attachment_26995" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple[/caption]

The Ondeh-Ondeh Cake ($6.50) is a fragrant pandan cake with layers of coconut cream and dried coconut shavings. The layers work together to achieve the distinct flavour profile of ondeh-ondeh, making it a successful love story between traditional Nonya pastries and Western cakes.

A New Café Gem Has Opened Up On Rangoon Road, And It’s Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale

Ever wish you could escape into a perfect fairy tale world?

Now, you can! Well, at least for lunch.

[caption id="attachment_26841" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]

The beautiful and charming Enchanted Cafe has just opened up along Rangoon Road, for you to dine and while away your weekends in a fantasy world.

Enchanting Ambience

First things first, the aesthetic of this place is on point!

Entering into this cafe is like stepping foot into the fairy tale garden of your dreams–the only things missing are actual fairies.

Picture a wooden shelf lined with large vintage books, twigs and potted plants hanging from the ceiling, fairy lights draped down branches and across the walls, and quirky, mismatched tables and chairs filling the space.

[caption id="attachment_26680" align="aligncenter" width="1628"] Image Credit: Image Credit: The food and drinks at Enchanted Cafe are just as dreamy, both in terms of taste and presentation.

Something you can’t miss is the theatrical Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90)–also the most instagram-worthy of them all.

It starts as a blue drink, set in a stone dish, surrounded by wispy smoke. Add an orange “potion”, swirl it all together, and it transforms into a deep, glittery purple.

[caption id="attachment_26678" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]

Also on the menu are brunch favourites like the Big Breakkie ($17.90), as well as the Croque Madame ($14.90).

The standout item on the menu, however, would have to be a traditional favourite with a twist: The Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90).

This unique burger adds a touch of familiar Singaporean flavour to the otherwise fantasy-like setting.

Expect a tender pork patty marinated in five-spice seasoning, complete with bits of water chestnut, and black garlic sauce that’s made from scratch.

[caption id="attachment_26683" align="aligncenter" width="1188"] Image Credit: Ng Yi Yang[/caption]

And don’t leave without ordering dessert!

Your best bet here is the French Vanilla Crepe Cake.

The thin pancakes are fluffy, with generous layers of light, airy cream slathered in between. Perfect after a hearty meal.

Bangkok’s famous April’s Bakery has finally opened in Singapore!

And it’s serving up Hong Kong-style Lao Po Bing (Wife Cake) with a twist.

Choose between sweet and savoury options depending on your mood–both are stuffed with flavourful, colourful fillings, wrapped in a thin, flaky crust.

For an afternoon snack, try the fragrant Pork with Gravy, or the subtly sweet Pork with Honey.

For dessert, get the Thai Milk Tea, Green Tea, or go for the popular Taro (with a hidden gingko nut within!) and Pumpkin flavours.

These Cantonese-style pies are handmade and baked fresh daily to ensure they taste great, and they’re all priced at only $2 each!

We suggest you head down early, because the yummier flavours get snapped up real quick.

This newest addition to the themed cafe scene may be the most magical one yet.

The quirky Enchanted Cafe charms at first sight with its beautiful decor, complete with a magical garden and collection of spell books.

Enchanted Cafe[/caption]

But what’s most striking is the presentation of its dishes.

Think: Bright red cherry compote, blackberries and blueberries in a vivid splash against a deep blue plate, sprinkled with seemingly handpicked bits of nuts and leaves. That’s what makes up the tangy, yet sweet Berries Compote French Toast ($14.90).

For something traditional with a twist, there’s the Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90), which is exactly what it sounds like, complete with bits of water chestnut and black garlic sauce made from scratch.

The most instagramable thing here is the Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90), a blue drink that turns glittery purple after an orange liquid is added.

This has to be the most enchanting cafe to open since the Harry Potter Cafe.

Downtown Gallery Is Giving Other Malls A Run For Their Money With Fresh Store Concepts

One thing Singaporeans never get sick of is shopping, and I attest to this 100%.

Singapore is a shopaholics dream destination, with over 200 shopping malls spread over our tiny island. Downtown Gallery is the latest addition to the list. Located in the heart of the Cental Business District, walking distance away from Tanjong Pagar MRT, Downtown Gallery is no ordinary shopping mall.

A Tech Geek’s Dream

[caption id="attachment_26629" align="aligncenter" width="630"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Image Credit: Picturesify[/caption]

The jewel of Downtown Gallery has to be the Wayfinder. Consisting of 12 55-inch monitors, it is Singapore’s largest interactive mall directory. Wayfinder even has a weather feature that accurately depicts lightning and storms on the screen in real time!

Socialise While Cooking Up A Storm

[caption id="attachment_26631" align="alignnone" width="820"] Image Credit: House Inspire[/caption]

One feature that hopes to bring Singaporeans together is the “social kitchen”. Fitted with 10 cooking stations, complete with kitchen equipment, crockery and condiments, Singaporeans can book a station online or via an app. You can then bring your own raw ingredients and cook up a storm with friends and family.

Measuring 4,000sq ft, this “social kitchen” includes a dining space so you can set up an intimate birthday celebration or family get-together with your loved ones!

Food, Glorious Food!

What’s a mall without food? Downtown Gallery offers up a wide array of eats for every occasion.

Looking for a spot to indulge? Head to Venue by Sebastian. Serving up contemporary European fare, with both communal tables and bar counter seats available, Venue by Sebastian is perfect for a lunch meeting.

Have a casual and filling lunch at Sama Curry & Cafe, a Hokkaido soup curry shop that offers a unique twist on the classic Asian dish, served with pork belly, hamburg patty, eggs, chicken or seafood. There’s nothing like tucking into a bowl of curry on a rainy afternoon.

8 Instagram-Worthy Drinks That Will Have Your Followers Spamming The Like Button

Hands up if you can’t resist snapping a photo of your avocado toast or your latte during brunch.

Most of us are guilty of snapping a pic or two of our food, especially if they’re pretty because #foodgoals. And why shouldn’t you? After all, someone put hard work into plating up or creating these dishes–appreciating it is the least we can do.

If you’re a foodie who loves digging into nosh that not just tastes but looks amazing, we’ve shortlisted 10 beverages from all over Singapore that are not just a treat for the taste buds, but for the eyes as well.

1. Unicorn Tears @ Dapper Coffee

[caption id="attachment_26480" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple User Jeslyn xxx[/caption]

While unicorns sadly do not exist, here’s something we’d happily make do with: Unicorn Tears. Created by the good people at Dapper Coffee, a small cafe along Amoy Street, Unicorn Tears is the cafe’s best known product.

A shimmery swirl of aqua blue with flecks of sparkle, this beverage is not just to be consumed–it’s to be admired as well. The one thing you MUST do when you get your hands on a bottle of Unicorn Tears is give it a good shake! This will bring out all the sparkle and the mesmerising shades of blue.

At $10 a bottle, Unicorn Tears does not come cheap, but it is free of alcohol, caffeine, nuts, soy, eggs and it’s gluten-free.

[caption id="attachment_26481" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: Dapper Coffee[/caption]

So what is it made of? We can’t quite pinpoint the ingredients that go into this magical potion but according to the people at Dapper Coffee, Unicorn Tears “is some pure-ass stuff”.

For the animal lovers out there, don’t worry! No unicorns were harmed in the making of Unicorn Tears.

2. Ombre Drinks @ The Juicy Way & The Talad Drink

If you were at Artbox this year, you would have noticed some epic-ly long queues at stalls serving up ombre drinks. The Juicy Way and The Talad Drink were two stalls that saw excited Singaporeans queueing up for hours to get their hands on these colourful bottles of fruit juices and smoothies.

[caption id="attachment_26482" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: The Juicy Way Facebook[/caption]

Crafted from an assortment of fruits, The Juicy Way serves up bottles of juice that come in alluring ombre shades. The Big Bang, crafted from dragonfruit, guava, honeydew and blue pea flower is one of the more eye-catching ones with its galaxy-like hues of purple, grey and blue.

Unfortunately, The Juicy Way is primarily a pop up store, so you’ll have to follow them on Instagram and Facebook to get updates on where they’ll be popping up next!

Serving up authentic Thai nosh, alongside an assortment of juices and traditional Thai drinks, the Talad Drink & Thai Kitchen was a crowd favourite at this year’s Artbox. If you missed the chance to try The Talad Drink at Artbox, fret not! They have a kiosk at Toa Payoh just a stone’s throw away from the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange.

While you can expect your favourite Thai drinks here like Thai Ice Milk Tea and Thai Iced Lemon Grass, don’t expect them to come in their usual dull colours–The Talad Drink serves up all their beverages in giant bottles of ombre tones.

Want a refreshing tea? Opt for the An Chan Orange or An Chan Kiwi. The colours are gorgeous and are bound to up your ‘Gram game!

3. Rainbow Lattes @ I AM & Dazzling Cafe

[caption id="attachment_26485" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image Credit: I AM[/caption]

At one point, edible rainbows were the only food trend worth chasing (get it?). Food items served in all the colours of the rainbow may seem ridiculous to some, but to Instagram foodies, they spell an Instagram moment.

There are not one but two well known joints in Singapore serving up the photogenic Rainbow Lattes: I AM cafe, a popular halal eatery that serves up Western fare, and Dazzling Cafe, a Taiwanese franchise known for its thick toasts.

For those unacquainted with the concept of Rainbow Lattes, it typically involves dripping food colouring into a pitcher of steamed milk. A skilled barista then pours the milk into the coffee, as with any other cup of latte.

Rainbow Lattes, like most rainbow-coloured food, do not taste any different from their less colourful counterparts, so they really are your average cup of coffee with a colourful twist!

4. OTT Milkshakes @ Cake Spade, Robert Timms, Patissez

[caption id="attachment_26549" align="aligncenter" width="608"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Cake Spade Facebook Page[/caption]

Known for their deliciously dense cakes and OTT milkshakes, Cake Spade is a cafe that’s truly knows its desserts. From the Matcha Adzuki Cakeshake to their Unicorn Cakeshake, Cake Spade doesn’t fool around when it comes to their monster desserts. The perfect spot to satisfy your sugar cravings, we highly recommend sharing the Freakshakes at Cake Spade.

Another place you can go for your Freakshake fix is Robert Timms. With flavours like Banana Popcorn and Rocky Timms, these OTT milkshakes will have you getting busy slurping everything up!

[caption id="attachment_26550" align="aligncenter" width="750"] Image Credit: Patissez Instagram [/caption]

The original creators of the Freakshake, Patissez is all about keeping it simple. Patissez has an array of more “traditional” tasting OTT Milkshakes, with flavours like mint chocolate and salted pretzel. Ironically, the creations at Patissez are quite tame compared those from other dessert spots, but we kind of like the fact that these look far less intimidating than the others.

If you’re all about the ‘gram, Enchanted Cafe is a quaint spot you need to check out. Far from the typical brunch fare we’ve become accustomed to, this cafe offers up food with an enchanting Singaporean twist!

[caption id="attachment_26557" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burpple User Shali Selva[/caption]

The star of the show at this cafe is the Sorcerer’s Elixir.

Served atop a stone dish filled with dry ice, this enticing beverage starts off slightly purple with whispers of shimmer. The staff will come around and pour a slightly orange-y substance into your drink, turning it from a dark red to a deep purple. The whole spectacle of the Sorcerer’s Elixir is mesmerising, so we advise getting your phones ready to capture the magic!

Sip slowly though, because this particular drink will set you back almost $10!

6. Heisenberg @ The Lab

[caption id="attachment_26563" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Estée Celestine[/caption]

The Lab is one of those cafes that will keep you coming back for more. Located a stone’s throw away from Sultan Mosque, The Lab is known for serving up your usual Western fare, alongside a slew of desserts and drinks. If you’re the kind who can never decide what to eat, this place will make that decision even harder for you.

[caption id="attachment_26564" align="aligncenter" width="516"] Image Credit: The Lab Facebook Page[/caption]

Like any dining establishment worth its salt, The Lab serves a good range of coffees, juices and mocktails. However, what sets The Lab apart is the presentation of its drinks. The Heinsenberg, which is served with a syringe in it, is a particularly interesting one. Hot beverages also come with droppers filled with sugar syrup!

Not only are these drinks tasty, they’re a fun experience, and they’re 100% insta-worthy.

While some food fads are able to stand the test of time (hello salted egg-everything), some quickly fade into obscurity. One that will certainly be a cute addition to your Instagram feed is the Light Bulb Drink. Call it gimmicky if you want, but you can’t deny that these drinks make you want to whip out your phone and snap a picture of it.

Bubbs serves your favourite Bubble Tea flavours in plastic light bulbs, from the classic Milk Tea to an assortment of Fruit Teas. But here’s the bad news–Bubbs only has one outlet and it certainly is out of the way for many Singaporeans.

Located in Tai Seng, it’s great for those working in the area, and not so great for, well, the rest of us.

[caption id="attachment_26569" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image Credit: Oh My Cafe Facebook Page[/caption]

What’s a light bulb that doesn’t light up, am I right? Oh My Cafe at Westgate takes the Light Bulb drink to the next level but serving it with a glowing straw. Serving drinks in all sorts of eye-catching colours, we have to say, the drinks here have won our hearts.

8. Coffee In A Cone @ Coffee Academics

One caffeinated treat that will have your followers double tapping away is the Coffee In A Cone. No, it’s not as simple as pouring a cuppa into an ice cream cone. Instead, the process involves coating the ice cream cones with different chocolate compounds, giving them that hardened exterior and extra integrity. Warm, slightly sweet and with a crunch, this is a whole new way to enjoy your cuppa.

Queenstown Is More Than Just IKEA – Here Are 10 Other Eating Spots You Should Not Miss

Most people know Queenstown for two things: IKEA and Queensway Shopping Centre. What many people may not know is Queenstown is also Singapore’s first satellite town.

An area rich with history, those who live in Queenstown know it is more than just a place to get cheap furniture and cheap sport shoes. In fact, Queenstown is home to many underrated food gems that residents have been keeping to themselves!

Offering tasty local grub, trendy desserts, and everything in between, even the pickiest eater will be able to find something here!

For those with a taste for local delights,

1. Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa

[caption id="attachment_26540" align="alignnone" width="1600"] Image Credit: AspirantSG[/caption]

Believe it or not, this Michelin-starred laska only costs $3/$4/$5, depending on the portion you order.

Here, they are generous with their prawns, tau pok (fried beancurd), cockles and fish cakes, which are all soaked in their deliciously thick, savory broth. Serving the laksa in a claypot is a stroke of genius, as it keeps the broth nice and warm up till the very last mouthful.

2. Master Prata

Hidden between a row of shops at Alexandra Central Mall, you might miss this prata shop if you’re not looking out for it. Master Prata has an extensive menu, featuring a whopping 108 flavors of prata, alongside items like mee goreng and roti john.

[caption id="attachment_26525" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Image Credit: Master Prata Facebook[/caption]

The plain prata ($1.20), or kosong prata, as we Singaporeans affectionately know it, is crispy without being excessively oily. You can choose from 3 different curries: chicken, fish and mutton.

[caption id="attachment_26526" align="aligncenter" width="636"] Image Credit: Master Prata Facebook[/caption]

Another popular choice is the tissue prata with chocolate sauce ($3). It is crispy on the outside, and light and fluffy on the inside. The dark chocolate sauce plays the role of the supporting character well, and doesn’t overpower the prata.

Be prepared to be spoiled for choice when you pay this eatery a visit. Go for a safe option with the egg prata or opt for a more daring alternative, such as the milo prata and egg floss prata! You can even order one of each–who says you have to stop at one?

Alternatively, try the chicken chop, which is priced at a super affordable $5. The huge portion of meat is juicy and well-seasoned with basil and tarragon. Paired with coleslaw, this dish beats KFC’s fried chicken hands-down.

For the hipsters,

4. The Bakehouse (Permanently Closed)

The Bakehouse is a quaint joint opened by artisan café Carpenter and Cook–and you can tell the instant you walk in.

Both cafes boast a rustic aesthetic, with vintage furniture strategically placed in every nook and cranny of the area. Pleasing on the eyes, it’s also very Insta-worthy.

One thing that sets this café apart from its sister counterpart is their focus on main courses such as pizza, pasta and sandwiches.

[caption id="attachment_26529" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Burpple User Celest Lim[/caption]

The chili crab linguine ($22) has finely shredded crab meat tossed into the springy pasta noodle. Its fusion chili sauce is reminiscent of the sauce in chili crab–spicy, with the tang and sweetness of tomato sauce. It’ll take you more than a little effort to keep yourself from licking the whole plate clean!

[caption id="attachment_26530" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: yennymakanmulu.com[/caption]

Another fantastic dish worth a taste is the Parma Ham Pizza ($18), which is good for sharing between 4 people. Topped with tomato, parma ham, mozzarella and shaved parmesan cheese, with truffle oil drizzled over it, every bite of this pizza delivers a kick of flavour.

If you like your pizza crust thin and crispy, you’ll love this pizza. Baked to perfection, it won’t leave you feeling bloated from all that extra pizza dough.

Just take a look at the Milky Way cake, a masterpiece in terms of both looks and taste. Beneath the star spangled layer lies an Italian sponge cake with white chocolate and yogurt mousse. There is also calamansi jelly interspersed through the cake, keeping the cake from being overly sweet.

One of those foods that look too good to eat, you’ll be torn on whether to eat it or to keep admiring it.

[caption id="attachment_26522" align="aligncenter" width="649"] Image Credit: Boufe Boutique Café Facebook[/caption]

If you swing more savoury than sweet, try the smoked salmon croissant ($19). The buttery croissant is served in bite-size portions, accompanied by smoked salmon and fluffy scrambled eggs. A brunch classic that never gets old!

Another must try at this confectionery would be their pandan chiffon cake ($0.80). If you want to give this a try, make sure to do it early in the day! We hear these cakes run out fast!

7. King Avocado

It is a well-known fact that Alexandra Food Village is the home of avocado juice. Of the 5 stalls selling avocado juice there, King Avocado, the pioneer of avocado juices, emerges victorious.

[caption id="attachment_26552" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Dixon Chan[/caption]

The top-grade avocadoes used here blends well with the infusion of gula melaka, giving the avocado juice served at this particular store a smoothness and creaminess that’s hard to beat. At $3.50 for a regular-sized cup and $5 for the large cup, it may not be the cheapest, but it’s definitely worth every dollar.

8. The Milky Way

Opened by Campus Superstar alumni Renfred Ng and managed by his brother Alfred Ng, The Milky Way serves a host of delectable, unique ice-cream flavours. Priced at $3.80 for a regular scoop and $4.50 for a premium scoop, this is the perfect pick-me-up for a hot summer day typical day in Singapore.

[caption id="attachment_26531" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Image Credit: mshannahchia.com[/caption]

One interesting flavour the Ng brothers have created is the ‘Smurf’. Coloured blue like a Smurf, no artificial colouring was used to give the ice-cream this blue hue. Instead, the colour comes from blue butterfly pea flowers. Flavour-wise, it tastes like a cross between bubblegum and a paddlepop ice-cream.

Another must-try flavour would be the Strawberry Cheesecake. Expect chunks of biscuits and strawberry hidden within the velvety texture of this ice-cream.

[caption id="attachment_26532" align="aligncenter" width="584"] Image Credit: The Milk Way Facebook[/caption]

You can also pair your ice-cream with waffles here! The waffle batter is home-made daily by Renfred and Alfred’s mum. With a crispy exterior that doesn’t turn soggy from the ice-cream, a whole waffle will set you back $8.80, while a half waffle will only set you back $5.

9. All The Batter

Some of you have tried banoffee pies (a dessert pie made from bananas, cream and toffee) before, but how many of you have tried a banoffee pie drink?

[caption id="attachment_26519" align="aligncenter" width="825"] Image Credit: Burpple User ZC Ong[/caption]

All The Batter has taken a creative approach to making the English classic by using fresh bananas, chocolate chips, caramel, honey and milk to make a liquid version of the pie. Priced at $4.90, wholesome ingredients are used to create this drink, such as their hand-made honey cream.

[caption id="attachment_26520" align="aligncenter" width="450"] Image Credit: Trip Advisor[/caption]

One of their latest creations is the Fruit Bran ($4.90), a hand-roasted rolled oats drink blended with fruits and honey. It is a refreshing mid-day perk for those working in the area.

All The Batter also sells a range of superfoods such as granola and flax seeds, so to all the health nuts out there, don’t say bojio!

Oh So Savoury Donuts

The donuts here come in 3 scrummy flavours: Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Truffle Oil, Bacon and Mozzarella, and the Cheeseburger donut–a magical combination of minced beef, cherry tomatoes with a slice of melted cheddar, and jalapeño.

A local favourite with a modern twist would be the Chili Crab Croissant ($11.90).

Sweet tooths can also sink your teeth into their desserts, like the Mini Choux Pastries (in yuzu, raspberry and chocolate flavours), Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake ($5.90) and the lemon meringue tart.

Six By Sera is always coming up with new goodies too! Check out the Bandung Lychee Raspberry Macarons they created specially for Mother’s Day.
