The Projector: How An Abandoned Theatre Became An Artsy Alternative Cinema

If you’ve heard of The Projector, you’ll know it is a completely alternative cinema concept.

Far from screening mainstream blockbusters, here you’ll find indie, foreign, cult favourite, classic, arthouse and local flicks.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Celluloid Junkie[/caption]

But how did the fifth floor of the slightly crummy Golden Mile Tower come to house this artsy two-screen cinema?

Seems like its vintage appeal isn’t constructed at all, but stems from a long history we think you film buffs should know about…

The Golden Theatre

Once upon a time, there was the The Golden Theatre.

Situated in said Golden Mile Tower along Beach Road, it was once the largest cinema in all of Singapore and Malaysia.

Think: an impressive 1,500 stall and circle seats, all inside one massive movie theatre.

[caption id="attachment_26312" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Mapio[/caption]

For those born before 1973, you may know its constructor, Chong Gay Theatres, who are also the ones behind the homely Kallang Theatre.

Back in the day, The Golden Theatre was well-patronised for its Mandarin films, ‘adult’ artistic films, and even Bollywood hits.

Sadly, with sparkly new shopping malls sprouting up through the ‘90s, its popularity slowly waned.

The majestic theatre split up into smaller, separate halls–Golden 1 and Golden 2, both of which then sunk into disrepair.

The Fixer Uppers

Enter creative development company Pocket Projects, and design and architectural firm FARM.

This group of passionate cinephiles banded together to breathe new life into this old, derelict, but also historic space.

And so restoration works began, in the form of The Projector.

[caption id="attachment_26319" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Image Credit: The Projector[/caption]

The two halls also received new names, along with their new lease of life.

Golden 1 became the Green Room, and Golden 2, the Redrum–a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s classic ‘The Shining’.

Fast Forward

Today, the halls are once again as bustling as they were in the good old days.

Each of the two rooms at The Projector seats nearly 200 people, and are fitted with digital projectors.

The chairs in the front section of the Green Room have even been replaced with comfy bean bags.

[caption id="attachment_26316" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Pocket Projects[/caption]

They’ve also roped in Luna Films, the people in charge of curating local film festivals, to help select and bring in films to be screened.

Finally, to complete the movie-going experience, came the addition of a café to the cinema’s foyer, manned by Group Therapy Coffee. It sells classic movie snacks like popcorn, alongside burgers, pies, and cake, along with sodas, juices and their own coffee blends.

[caption id="attachment_26315" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: The Projector[/caption]

If you’ve ever lamented the limited range of films in Singapore, you now know where to find a great independent cinema.

For all its history, The Projector itself is definitely as fascinating as the movies it screens, and is well worth a visit.

The second meal adds rice, kimchi, sweet corn and other ingredients to create the all time favourite Kimchi fried rice–and all for $18.80.

10. Bojio Cafe

We didn’t expect to find this gem in the heart of Tampines.

The story behind its founding is all too relatable. Mr Chan, the star chef, and Mrs Chan’s picky family members love hunting for dessert spots all over Singapore.

Inspired to open a shop of their own, they created a DIY ice cream recipe, purchased the machinery and ingredients required, and never looked back.

All their hand-made ice-cream contains reduced sugar, children friendly milk/cream, no preservatives or colouring and only fresh fruits.

This Korean BBQ Joint Serves Up Premium Meats So You Can Treat Mum Right This Mother’s Day

While it’s no secret that Tanjong Pagar is a hot spot for Korean BBQs, we’ve discovered a new gem. You won’t have to travel into the CBD for this one.

Nestled in a corner of Plaza Singapura, this restaurant can be easy to miss. Seorae is known for its interesting mix of authentic Korean cuisine as well as creative twists on familiar favourites.

Unlike most other Korean BBQ spots where gas canisters are used, customers at Seorae get to enjoy premium meats grilled over flaming charcoal, which adds that extra oomph and fragrance to the dishes.

[caption id="attachment_25926" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Entrance of Seorae[/caption]

Aside from its unique charcoal grill, this Korean eatery has also made a name for itself in Korea as a leading barbecue chain selling the much-loved skirt meat, or galmaegisal.

Recently, Seorae has also revamped its menu to include sizzling new selections, sharing sets, soju cocktails and makkoli mixes.

Needless to say, we couldn’t resist a taste.

1. Galmaegisal – $21.90

The very first Korean BBQ joint in Singapore to serve galmaegisal, Seorae is pioneering this tasty trend by offering up 3 flavours of the much-loved cut-garlic soy sauce, spicy and original.

Once served exclusively to Korean royalty, now you too get to feast like a king with Seorae’s signature dish, premium pork skirt meat marinated with authentic Korean spices.

[caption id="attachment_25920" align="alignnone" width="4991"] Galmaegisal (Image Credit: Seorae)[/caption]

Grilled to perfection using a unique ‘circle grilling’ technique, the galmaegisal is reminiscent of wagyu beef–rich in flavour with a tender and juicy bite.

[caption id="attachment_25952" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Galmaegisal[/caption]

Meat lovers, chew on this: The precious galmaegisal meat, located between the rib and belly, amounts to only 250 grams of a full-grown pig. That’s how precious it is!

2. Mixed Kkochi Platter – $21.90 (a la carte)

Next up, we got a taste of this platter that caters to even the most fickle of eaters. It was a sensational experience, with charcoal-grilled skewers of melted cheese, kimchi and spicy enoki wrapped in samgyeobsal (premium pork belly) and woosamgyeob (US prime beef shortplate).

[caption id="attachment_25919" align="alignnone" width="1898"] Mixed Kkochi Platter (Image Credit: Seorae)[/caption]

It even came with skewers of pyogo buseot (shiitake mushroom), which were tasty and juicy, serving as a much welcomed palate cleanser among the wide array of meat skewers.

[caption id="attachment_25951" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Pyogo buseot (shiitake mushroom)[/caption]

Silky Egg and Gooey Melted Cheese

Surrounding the grill are silky grilled egg and melted cheese, which allow diners to add a delicious mix of texture and flavours to their meal.

[caption id="attachment_25930" align="alignnone" width="2619"] Silky egg…[/caption]

Despite being left on the grill for quite some time, the egg remained extremely fluffy and moist, with a soft and smooth, pudding-like texture. The top layer of the egg, on the other hand, was crispy and aromatic. Diners get 4 free refills of egg, so don’t hold back!

[caption id="attachment_25937" align="alignnone" width="1920"] …and gooey cheese[/caption]

The creamy, buttery flavour of the stretchy cheese added an explosive umami burst to the galmaegisal and samgyeobsal, a lethally tasty combination.

3. Woosamgyeob – $22.90

[caption id="attachment_25918" align="alignnone" width="5616"] Image Credit: Seorae[/caption]

With a good ratio of lean meat to fat, woosamgyeob, otherwise known as US beef shortplate, is characterised by a rich flavour and pleasant bite.

[caption id="attachment_25950" align="alignnone" width="2879"] Woosamgyeob[/caption]

Marinated with Seorae’s in-house sauce, the beef strips were nicely browned on the grill and dripping with flavour. We were pleasantly surprised as the beef remained juicy and tender instead of being tough and dry.

4. Spicy Samgyeobsal – $17.90

Crisp, sweet and perfectly browned, the slices of samgyeobsal kept our chopsticks busy.

[caption id="attachment_25943" align="alignnone" width="1911"] Spicy Samgyeobsal[/caption]

If you’re not a fan of spicy food, this samgeyobsal will offer the flavours of chilli without the searing heat. The other options are regular and hangari samgyeopsal.

5. LA Galbi – $29.90

[caption id="attachment_25946" align="alignnone" width="2314"] LA Galbi[/caption]

These succulent prime beef short-ribs called out to us to sink our teeth into them, and we gladly agreed.

[caption id="attachment_25948" align="alignnone" width="2880"] LA Galbi[/caption]

The meat fell off the bone easily, and was sweeter and more flavourful than the other cuts of meat as the meat was cooked with the bone.

6. Sundubu Jjigae – $14.90

If there was a go-to dish for a cold, rainy day, this would be it. A rich soup that nourishes and revitalises, this is Seorae’s secret: their special spicy soft tofu stew has a broth full of minced pork, fresh vegetables, clams and eggs.

[caption id="attachment_25949" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Sundubu Jjigae[/caption]

We were initially worried the clams would be fishy, but the broth captured the sweetness of the clams without any hint of fishiness. The egg was beautifully cooked, partially gooey and slightly runny. Mixed with the flavourful soup and tofu, it was comfort food at its best.

7. Budae Jjigae – $35.90 (a la carte)

Unlike most other army stews, this version tasted much more wholesome, with a cleaner flavour. Simmered in a specially prepared Gochujang spicy sauce, the stew contained all the essentials and more. There was sausage, spam, fish cake, tteokboki, beans, and even bacon! They also included fresh vegetables to balance out all the meat.

[caption id="attachment_25917" align="alignnone" width="7216"] Budae Jjigae (Image Credit: Seorae)[/caption]

If you’re not a fan of soggy ramyeon, Seorae’s staff can cook your ramyeon just right, making sure the noodle stays springy and chewy.

[caption id="attachment_25953" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Budae Jjigae[/caption]

8. Cheese Mandu Tteokbokki –  $35.90 (a la carte)

Guess what, more cheese! Not that we’re complaining.

[caption id="attachment_25928" align="alignnone" width="2880"] Cheese Mandu Tteokbokki[/caption]

Otherwise known as rambokki (ramyeon + tteokbokki), this Cheese Mandu Tteokbokki covers all the bases. It consists of Korean rice cake cooked in Seorae’s hot sauce, served on a hot pan with fried fish cake, egg, corn-cheese mandu (dumplings), ramyeon and pineapple. The ramyeon and tteokbokki is meant to be stirred into the hot sauce, where tasty, gooey cheese lies within.

Cheese lovers, you will not be disappointed by the corn-cheese mandu, a crispy golden packet that gives an audible crunch when you bite into it. It oozes stringy melted cheese, sprinkled with bits of sweet corn. We’re definitely ordering this again the next time we’re here!

9. Pineapple Soju Cocktail – $22.90++

A Korean BBQ feast is not complete without some soju. Accompanying our feast was this refreshingly fruity twist on the conventional Korean soju. This summery drink featured an entire pineapple spiked with soju, laden with fresh pineapple bits scooped straight from the husk. We downed one glass after another, keeping pace with our fervent feeding frenzy.

Enjoy Seorae’s Mother’s Day Promotion!

[caption id="attachment_25913" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: Seorae[/caption]

This Mother’s Day, grab the opportunity to treat your mum to some delicious, authentic Korean cuisine at Seorae! A Mother’s Day promotion will be going on from 12 – 14 May, and you’ll get a FREE Pineapple Soju (worth $22.90++) with every reservation made.

Seorae offers much more in terms of taste and variety than the typical Korean BBQ restaurant. What really awed us were their fruity sojus and their famed galmaegisal. We’ll definitely be back, and very soon too!

This Unique Honey Cheesecake Is The Sweetest Way To Say ‘I Love You Mum’

Let’s admit it, a meal isn’t quite complete without a sweet treat at the end of it.

Here in Singapore, there are countless bakeries offering up decadent, sweet treats but if you’re looking for a cheesecake that will blow your socks off, head to Cat & The Fiddle.

Opened by award-winning pastry chef Daniel Tay in 2014, Cat & The Fiddle is Singapore’s first online cheesecake retailer.

Teaming up with Nature’s Farm, Cat & The Fiddle has created a special limited edition ‘Queen Bee’ Mother’s Day Cheesecake ($55.90 for 7″) so you can spoil the most important woman in your life this Mother’s Day.

This spectacular creation comprises two layers: a top layer crafted from UMF 5+ Manuka Honey, Osmanthus flowers and Goji berries, and a bottom layer crafted from luscious cream cheese mousse infused with Manuka Honey and lime zest.

[caption id="attachment_25280" align="aligncenter" width="750"] UMF 5+ Manuka Honey Cheesecake ($55.90 for 7″)[/caption]

A delightful combo, this cheesecake was surprisingly light. The cream cheese mouse was creamy and dense, with the touch of lime zest giving it a slight sour kick. The Manuka honey glaze was slightly sweet and the goji berries added a bit of added texture to this dessert.

Health conscious? This is the perfect dessert if you (and mum) are watching your weight or trying to cut down on processed goodies.

Popular Omotesando Koffee Is Coming To S’pore So We Can Get Caffeinated In Style

Omotesando Koffee Hong Kong

Yes, you heard us right!

The famous Omotesando Koffee which draws crowds in Hong Kong and Tokyo is finally coming to our sunny little island.

Come June, the cafe will be at level 4 of new mall, Downtown Gallery, in Shenton Way. The cafe is located within The Work Project, a large co-working space located within the mall.

[caption id="attachment_25735" align="alignnone" width="1480"] Omotesando Tokyo (Image Credit: Koffee Mameya Tokyo Koffee Mameya (Image Credit: TimeOut Japan)[/caption] [caption id="attachment_25734" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Koffee Mameya Beans (Image Credit: Omotesando Koffee Hong Kong Omotesando Koffee Hong Kong (Image Credit: eatandtreats)[/caption]

Decor-wise, Omotesando Koffee is known for its minimalist design. Both the Tokyo and Hong Kong outposts have similar decor, so we can probably expect something similar in Singapore.

If you are wondering if the quality of the coffee is going to be as good as its other branches, fret not! The baristas here will be trained by the baristas from Omotesando Japan and Hong Kong for three to six months.

Also, the coffee beans used here in Singapore will be roasted in Kyoto by Ogawa Coffee Roasters, just like the outlet in Japan. Coffee afficionados will also be able to sip the signature Omotesando Koffee blend by Eiichi Kunitomo.

The owners have promised that the Singapore outlet will have similar menu items to its Hong Kong and Tokyo branches. On top of that, there will also be items exclusive to the Singapore outlet. The menu is still a work-in-progress, so stay tuned for more updates!

Taste The Goodness Of Sarawak At Face To Face – An Eatery That Stays True To Its Roots

There’s nothing like digging into a hearty bowl of noodles to soothe a hungry stomach and a tired soul.

Here in Singapore, we’re lucky to have such a huge variety of cuisines that can be found (and indulged in!) on our very own shores.

One such cuisine is Sarawakian.

Part of East Malaysia, one thing Sawarak is known for (other than their stunning natural scenery) is its amazing food! Luckily for us, we don’t have to hop onto a plane to get a taste of Sarawkian eats.

Face To Face is one of only a handful of eateries that serve up authentic Sarawakian cuisine here in Singapore!

Face To Face

[caption id="attachment_25642" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Face To Face[/caption]

Housed in City Square Mall, this spacious eatery has a small and focused menu. With 10 noodle dishes and a small array of light bites, don’t think that Face To Face doesn’t take their food seriously.

The speciality at Face to Face is their noodles. Made in-house daily, their noodle recipe goes back 100 years!

Face To Face has such a compact menu due to the fact that their ingredients are carefully sourced. From the chilli they use to the oils and sauces that go into their dishes, founder and Sarawakian Aidan Goh ensures all the ingredients used at Face To Face taste and are identical to those found in their Malaysian outlets.

[caption id="attachment_25636" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Jennifer Yeo[/caption]

Traditional Sarawak Noodles (also known as Kolok Mee) and Sarawak Laksa are the best sellers at this humble eatery.

The Traditional Sarawak Noodles was–according to a Sarawakian–“very very close to the original”.

The Sarawak Laksa on the other hand was pretty similar to its original counterpart, and a lot less creamy and dense than the Chinese laksa we’re so used to.

[caption id="attachment_25637" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User SG Food On Foot[/caption]

If you’re looking for something a tad more soothing on the throat, opt for the Genki Herbal Chicken Soup. Served piping hot, the soup is filled with herbs, giving it an earthy flavour. The chicken is served whole so its meat might be a tad difficult to tear off with chopsticks, but you can’t say they’re stingy with their servings here!

[caption id="attachment_25635" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple User Hwans Lim[/caption]

Looking for something to wash down all these decadent dishes? Face To Face serves up some pretty interesting (and sweet) concoctions! Caramel 3 Layer Tea and Three Musketeers are two beverages you cannot miss when you head to Face To Face.

The Caramel 3 Layer Tea comprises 3 distinct layers: caramel syrup, milk and tea. Reminiscent of milk tea, the Caramel 3 Layer Tea is a tad sweeter but not cloyingly so.

The Three Muskateers, on the other hand, is crafted with soda, plums and lime, and was a refreshing companion to the heavier dishes.

[caption id="attachment_25645" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Image Credit: Face To Face Facebook[/caption]

With over 30 outlets across Malaysia, you know Face To Face serves up the real deal! Whether you’re craving a humble bowl of noodles or just looking for something delicious to dig into, head to Face To Face!
