7 Reasons Every Neighbourhood Deserves A Kick-Ass CC Like Ci Yuan

For those living at the North East, odds are you’ve heard of Ci Yuan Community Club (CC). Opened by our Prime Minister last September, this CC has its own food court, clinic and karaoke establishment. Did we also mention that it has a 500-seater performance theatre that is fully furnished with light and sound equipment?

The reasons every neighbourhood deserves a CC like Ci Yuan are pretty self-explanatory by now, but we thought we’ll add more to the list to prove our point.

1. Affordable food from $2.80

[caption id="attachment_8284" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Image Credit: MCI[/caption]

The cost of living in Singapore can get pretty high and sometimes, all you want to do is to tuck in a bowl of affordable and frills-free bak chor mee. For those on a tight budget, you’ll be glad to know that food at the hawker centre situated in the CC are priced as low as $2.80. From Nasi Goreng to Chicken Rice, enjoy a variety of your favourite hawker dishes without feeling the burn!

Besides the low cost, this is also a non-profit hawker centre. Half the profits earned from the relatively low stall rental prices (from $1500 to $1800 per month) go into community funding like coupons for the poor. The other half is used to help hawkers ‘upgrade’ themselves. So you are doing a good deed whenever you dine at Ci Yuan.

2. Self-payment kiosk

[caption id="attachment_9063" align="alignnone" width="900"]selfpaymentkiosk_straitstimes Image Credit: Straits Times[/caption]

This hawker centre is the first and only in Singapore to go ‘cashier-less’. There’s a self-payment kiosk at every stall that accepts cash (notes and coins), and returns the exact amount to you. What a great way for stalls to increase productivity. Diners don’t have to worry about counting change; it’ll never be wrong!

It also shows how our hawker scene has caught up with times. These places are no longer the stereotypical ‘old and dirty’ food places in Singapore!

3. Great variety, good food

One dish we recommend is the Salted Egg Prawn Ball ($18) from the Hong Kong Chef’s Kitchen stall. It is run by a former Crystal Jade chef from Hong Kong. Talk about having good credentials!

Our food recommendations:

4. 24/7 food stalls

[caption id="attachment_9015" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Credit: misstamchiak.com Teochew Handmade Fishball Noodle, $2.80. 5. More Job Opportunites

[caption id="attachment_8289" align="alignnone" width="1024"]elderlyworking_straitstimes Image Credit: Straits Times. (Not pictured at Ci Yuan)[/caption]

This CC has also created more job opportunities, especially for the elderly residents living nearby.

Not only are the elderly workers at Ci Yuan given the freedom to work at their own pace, but each of them is also assigned to a specific area. They do not have to comb the entire hawker centre to clean and collect used cutlery. Also, the use of dishwashers help lessen the burden of the elderly workers. You won’t see any elderly scrubbing the dirty dishes at the back of the stalls.

Besides the elderly, more jobs are available for youngsters as well. Amongst the grey-haired hawkers, you will be able to spot some young adults. They are likely to be recent graduates from the 6. Elderly Care Services [caption id="attachment_8290" align="alignnone" width="1024"]silvercircle_onlywilliam Image Credit: Onlywilliam.blogspot.com[/caption]

If you don’t already know, Ci Yuan is the first CC so far that offers a Senior Care Centre. For some, this comes as a relief as some elderly may need constant supervision. For those who are unable to afford domestic help or are from low-income families, government subsidies for the Care Centre are available as well.

To make it even more convenient, transport can be arranged at a nominal cost. For patients who are bedridden, fret not for they do offer at-home services besides day care.

7. Entertainment [caption id="attachment_8292" align="alignnone" width="1024"]teoheng_toggle Image Credit: Toggle[/caption]

Yes, there is a Teo Heng tucked away in the CC. It may be no KBox, but at $18/3 hours for a small room, we think its ambience and convenience is well worth the price.

Since Teo Heng sells only beverages, feel free to da pao some food from the hawker centre below. However, do remember to clean up after yourselves and you’re good!

Besides Teo Heng, there is a Toastmasters Club as well! Interested to improve your public speaking or leadership skills? Look no further for the Toastmasters Club has got it all covered. Get your khakis (friends) to join in! Best of all? It is free, nuff said!

Address: Ci Yuan Community Club, 51 Hougang Avenue 9 Singapore, 538776 Singapore
Operating hours: Every 1st Saturday of the month at 2pm
Contact: 9847 2509

If you are a North Eastsider who has yet to visit Ci Yuan, we’d recommend you to explore the place and make use of its facilities. For non-North Eastsiders, all that’s left to do is seethe in jealousy. We kid.

Have you been to Ci Yuan CC before? What do you like most about it? For those of you who have not, what would you like to see? Which facility do you use in your CC the most? Let us know in the comment box below!

5 Exceedingly Unique Dining Places – Restaurants With A Twist

Are you tired of all the hipster cafes and bars? Looking for a more intriguing restaurant that will bring you to another world? Or maybe you’re a professional foodie who’s already visited all the restaurants in Singapore, and can’t seem to find your next target. With so many interesting restaurants and cafes around on our little red dot, finding one that stands out from the crowd can be a tough job. But lucky you, we’ve found 5 unique dining places that are sure to wow your socks off!

1. Selfie Coffee

[caption id="attachment_8323" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image Credits: Selfie Coffee Singapore Image Credits: Selfie Coffee Singapore[/caption]

Located along the streets of Haji Lane, Selfie Coffee is the most interesting cafe you’ll ever come across. The name says it all. They literally print customers’ selfies onto cups of coffee. How does it work? The first step is to take a selfie (duh). Next, you’ll have to choose a drink, and just like that, your selfie will be printed on the foam of your coffee.

The selfies are printed with 100% edible foam and cream. We recommend ordering a cold drink instead of a hot one, for the picture to last longer on the foam. Print your selfie on a cold cup of Mocha ($8.50) or on a cup of Selfie Coffee’s Signature Coffee ($7.50). Other drinks are also available if you’re not into the idea of sipping a picture of yourself.

11 Haji Lane Singapore 18920
Opening Hours: Sun & Mon 11am-10pm, Tues to Thurs 11am-8pm, Fri & Sat 11am-11pm

8 Romantic But Affordable Wedding Venues In Singapore Under $10k

It’s June and that means the wedding season is upon us! We have often heard laments that Singapore is a very expensive place to get married, but is that true? We’ve embarked on this journey to discover the supposedly few romantic but affordable wedding venues that are slightly easier on the pocket. Not everyone wants or can fork out the usual hotel venues where one table could cost (gasp) $1888 – what Resorts World Sentosa charges for a weekday lunch.

Here are five offbeat venue suggestions that would not cost you an arm and leg. They’re even romantic and beautiful, to boot! With this, you and your partner can focus on building your nest egg instead.

1. Spruce Ristorante at Phoenix Park

Some yachts have their own barbeque pits onboard. You could also arrange for catering (at your own cost). Space is quite limited since most yachts only allow up to 30 people onboard. You could also fork out more to rent the luxurious Royal Albatross which can host up to 149 guests.

The yachts are available for rent at four hours and you can extend the hours afterwards for around $350 per hour, depending on the vendor. Weekdays are usually cheaper but

6. Kombi Rocks

[caption id="attachment_8671" align="alignnone" width="1024"]kombirocks © Kombi Rocks[/caption]

Ever imagined yourself in a classic Beetle, feeding your fiance some ice cream whilst chilling in the backseat? How about enjoying the view of the lalang fields or riding the old school white scooter with your bae?

Well, Kombi Rocks has got your back! This retro venue with its iconic fleet of Beetles and Kombis would surely give hipster couples that 50’s vibe they love.

[caption id="attachment_8673" align="alignnone" width="1024"]kombirocksinterior_smartlocal © thesmartlocal.com[/caption]

The rustic charm does not end here as the whole diner is decorated as such with light brown tiled flooring. This certainly reminds us of gran’s house! Instead of the usual western cuisine you would expect (from such hipster cafes or diners), Kombi Rocks, fomerly known as Koon Kee Restaurant, offers Teochew-Thai fusion.

If you want a unique old school or shop house venue that offers Asian comfort food like Mee Goreng or Otah, we think you might like this place.

wheelersyard_wheelersyard © Wheeler’s Yard[/caption]

We’re sure everyone has heard of Wheeler’s Yard. Unlike most hipster haunts, this place is huge, as it used to be a warehouse before it was converted to a cafe cum bicycle atelier.

[caption id="attachment_8675" align="alignnone" width="1024"]wheelersyard_fionatreadwell © fionatreadwell.wordpress.com[/caption]

This industrial themed venue will may need some decoration for that romantic feeling. The downside to this place is that only bookings from Tuesdays to Thursdays are allowed.

NOM_nomfacebook1 © NOM Facebook[/caption]

Remember when the slides were made from smooth hard tiles and how everyone, including your childhood sweetheart, took turns sliding down it?

Well you would be pleasantly surprised to learn that NOM has a small replica slide that us 90’s kids used to play with! This brightly lit cafe will probably bring back some good old memories. It also has a heartland feel to it, thanks to the colorful dragon slide in the corner and its location.

[caption id="attachment_8676" align="alignnone" width="960"]nom_nomfacebook © NOM Facebook[/caption]

Not to mention, this spacious Bakery is also known for its customised fondant cakes. Go ahead and hire them to bake your wedding cake as well!

More Than Bak Kwa – 6 Things To Do At Our Cultural Gem, Chinatown

Some may think that going to Chinatown to experience ‘Chinese-ness’ is ridiculous as you can get Chinese goodies everywhere in Singapore. So why Chinatown?

If you’re not already in the know, Chinatown holds pretty significant historical and cultural significance. So significant that it has been declared as a national heritage site for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Still not convinced? Listed below are six things you can do in this neighbourhood. You never know, this cultural neighbourhood may just surprise you.

1. Shopping At Pagoda Street

Stroll along Pagoda Street and you’ll find pavements lined with stalls on either side, peddling anything from knick-knacks to memorabilia. Heck, there’s even a Tin Tin collectibles boutique, themed after the famous comic book character.

2. Appreciate Religious And Racial Diversity

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFvLqiruhVs/?taken-at=54191&hl=en

Hindu Temples are all about details and you definitely won’t want to miss the magnificent roof sculptures atop Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore.  You’ll be surprised to find that the temple, despite its significance, is successfully complemented by its surroundings. In fact, it blends so well into Chinatown that it adds vibrance to this precinct, which happens to also house the Al-Abrar Mosque and Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Talk about Singapore being the melting pot of religion and culture.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDUOxXIMvr4/?tagged=buddhatoothrelictemple

It is considered disrespectful to wear shoes into the temples, so do remove your shoes and place it neatly at the racks provided before entering. Do also note your attire and clothing (ideally no shorts or revealing clothes) and your etiquette (no yelling or fooling around) as a token of respect.

3. Vintage Shopping At Mohamed Ali Lane

https://www.instagram.com/p/s1pHtDMAiP/?taken-at=2522832&hl=en

For those who enjoy flea markets and vintage shopping, here’s an insider tip for you. Turn into Mohamed Ali Lane just across the road from the temple and you’ll find a market of sorts, selling awesome second-hand trinkets. If you’re lucky, you may even come across a hidden gem. Did we also mention that this lane is super Instagram-worthy? Play around with angles and treat your fellow followers to architectural eye candy.

4. Feast At Chinatown Food Street

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 9.51.55 PM

If you’re not starving after all that walking, Chinatown’s Food Street will do much to whet your appetite. With street hawker stalls and shophouse restaurants that are completed with al-fresco dining style along the street, Chinatown Food Street sure feels like a food blast from the past.

Too many choices and can’t decide what to eat? We highly recommend Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog PorridgeNewton Circus Ahmad Ibrahim SatayBoon Tat Street BBQ Seafood and Odeon Beef Noodles. If you prefer a lighter meal (save that stomach for dessert!), do try local delicacies such as the kaya toast, fresh popiah, fried oysters, and traditional Chinese pastries at Tong Heng Confectionary.

5. Play Chess / People Watch At Chinatown Complex

It is not unusual to see residents and senior citizens battling rounds of Chinese Chess as a recreational activity just outside Chinatown Complex. Despite the ‘heated competition’, these uncles are always throwing good-natured banter, filling the place with laughter. We can’t recommend this place more if people watching is your thing. Also, you’re more than welcome to spectate a cerebral game of Chinese Chess and pick up a tactic or two.

Yes, you read that right. You’ll be able to test drive the MINI Countryman or the NEW MINI Clubman around the River Valley (DREAM) or Martin Place (APS) area! Do be warned, strictly no consumption of booze prior to the drive (they’ve got human breathalysers on standby). Whats more, you’ll stand a chance to win an adorable SMEG Toaster; courtesy of APS Lifestyle when you post the official SMEG x MINI image on your social media account with #TMHSMEGxMINI !

Check out the bold and bubbly DJ Sonia Chew from 987fm at the APS Gallery from 2-2.45pm and at DREAM from 3-3.45pm or simply chill out with stellar beats and pulses from live bands.

With vendors randomly located at the two markets, you’ll surely experience true market hopping! Hop on the free shuttles throughout the day from 11am to 6pm. The shuttle runs every 15 mins.

At the markets, search for your favourite brands and F&B merchants. Shop through lifestyle brands such as Nana & Bird, and local start-ups – Hush Candles, Basic Beauty, The Letter J Supply and Kuin Studio. These brands specialise quality candles, skincare, calligraphy pieces and concrete homewares respectively.

Well, we won’t know which merchants will be located at which market, so you’ll have to head down to find out! If squeezing in the shuttles turn you off, you can test-drive the MINI to travel from one market to another!

Pokémon Café – An Exclusive Sneak Pik(achu) At Its Menu!

The last time we talked about our childhood dream coming true, it was when we announced the launch of the first Pokémon café in Singapore. Since then, we’ve been curious about the café’s menu. Will there be a local twist to its dishes? How extensive is the menu? After travelling across the land and searching far and wide, we’re proud to say that we’ve found the ultimate prize – the menu of the Pokémon Café. We know, this is totally our destiny.

From 27th May – 31st July 2016, the Pokémon Café will be serving an array of Pikachu Pokémon themed mains, desserts and drinks that’ll satisfy the inner Pokémon master in you. Ready to find out what they are? Turn your cap backwards Ash Ketchum style and let’s go!

Mains

[caption id="attachment_8206" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Pikachu Smiling Rice Omelette with Magma Sauce![/caption]

The menu may not be extensive, but rest assured that having your rice served in the shape of Pikachu’s face will have you forget that in no time. Amongst the list is the Pikachu Smiling Rice Omelettte with Magma Sauce $25. Pikachu’s face is shaped with saffron rice and is accompanied by omelette ears.

[caption id="attachment_8207" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Battle on Pikachu! Level-Up with Rare Candy! Battle on Pikachu! Level-Up with Rare Candy![/caption]

Another intriguing combination is Battle on Pikachu! Level-up with Rare Candy $20, a dish that consists of beef patty, mashed potatoes and vegetables in the shape of a Pokéball. We’re not too sure what the Rare Candy is, but we’re hoping that it’ll level-up the dish.

[caption id="attachment_8208" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Special Move “Fire Blast”! Special Move “Fire Blast”![/caption]

Equally intriguing is the Special Move “Fire Blast”! $20. A possible rice-in-a-pan dish, this dish is probably one that best fits its name.

Dessert

[caption id="attachment_8211" align="alignnone" width="1195"]Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait[/caption]

Talk about seriously adorable-looking desserts. Starting off with Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait $15, this sponge cake looks too good to be eaten. Accompanied by a crackling cotton candy ball, this dessert will satisfy your sugar craving for sure.

A cream puff and cotton candy, the Pokéball Cream Puff! $20 even allows customers to decorate the dessert with a choco pen. Not much to do with the theme but this interactive dessert is pretty interesting.

[caption id="attachment_8213" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake[/caption]

The usual pancakes and maple syrup takes on an adorable twist with Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake $20. On a serious note, we’re hoping that the number of ‘e’s is not representative of the dessert’s sugar level.

Finally something that’s not Pikachu related, the Special Move Hydro Pump $15 is made of jelly, candy, white chocolate, and custard cream in the shape of a Pokéball. We’d have liked it better if the jelly is in the shape of Squirtle but guess Pikachu remains the star of the show.

Drinks

[caption id="attachment_8215" align="alignnone" width="1179"]“Volt Tackle” Soda “Volt Tackle” Soda[/caption]

A combination of passion fruit soda and mango sherbet, the “Volt Tackle” Soda promises to give customers a tingling sensation that hopefully is more pleasant than what its name suggests.

[caption id="attachment_8216" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikachu Latte - Hot Pikachu Latte – Hot[/caption]

If you’re more of a coffee person, you’ll most likely appreciate the Pikachu Latte.

[caption id="attachment_8217" align="alignnone" width="1035"]Pikachu Latte - Iced Pikachu Latte – Iced[/caption]

Do note that the Hot $8 and Iced $9 versions come in different forms so if you’re unsure about which to get, you can always make a decision based on the aesthetics.

Ready to eat them all? As aesthetically pleasing as the dishes may be, we have to admit that to pay for them is the real test. As a witty friend of ours so rightly asked, is this Poké-a-hole-in-your-wallet café worth its price tag? We’ll leave it to you to decide.
