Into The Looking Glass: A Local Exhibition You Must Not Miss!
If you haven’t heard, the Singapore Biennale is in town right now, as part of Singapore Art Week 2017!
From now till 26 February, grab your friends and family and attend this eye-opening arts exhibition. We visited Project Dreamcatchers 2016: Into The Looking Glass and it was a rewarding experience.
Project Dreamcatchers 2016: Into The Looking Glass
Project Dreamcatchers is an initiative to help youths with chronic illnesses express their aspirations through art. Despite the many odds these youths face, they soldier on and reveal their struggles through the art they produce.
[caption id="attachment_21042" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Into The Looking Glass exhibition[/caption]This year, the exhibition at the Singapore Biennale is called ‘Into The Looking Glass’. Aptly named, this exhibition invites visitors to see the world through the artists’ eyes. ‘Into The Looking Glass’ certainly caught our eyes with its display of vulnerability and invitations to connect with its viewers.
Here are four reasons why you should drop by!
Support Local Artists
These budding local artists are partnered with mentors who guide and help them through the production of their art pieces.
Mentors include local artists Samantha Lo, Ho Wai Kit, Noor Iskandar and Tan Jia Hui, who worked closely with the youths to bring their messages to life through art.
[caption id="attachment_21045" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] By Sophie Arinie, titled Heart’s Rosary Night. If we just focus on the brighter side of ourselves, we will see ourselves soaring in this wonderful voyage.[/caption]Sparked by the initial question of what they wish to tell the public, these artworks are personal messages from the youths.
A Stunning Array of Unique Artwork
The artists and youths used mixed mediums and materials ranging from mirrors to plants. They were chosen carefully to best represent the artist’s journey and message, and to elicit the desired response from the viewer.
[caption id="attachment_21040" align="aligncenter" width="2752"] These three jars represent Faith, Fear, and Freedom respectively. The messages on the jars show how the artists interpret, express and reconcile the emotions within them.[/caption]While touching the artwork is not permitted, viewers can interact with the artworks in different ways, like seeing themselves in the reflections of Rayna’s art piece.
[caption id="attachment_21047" align="aligncenter" width="2300"] Rayna Tan explains that her art piece depicts the notion of self-image through the journey of life, with each face representing a turning point in the author’s life, and in her journey towards recovery.[/caption]From this, we can better experience and appreciate the depiction of the artists’ personal journey through life.
Touching Stories
Accompanying each art piece is a personal message by the artist about the inspiration behind their artwork.
[caption id="attachment_21043" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] By Sarah Tan, titled Imperfect.[/caption]Titled ‘Imperfect’, this plywood art piece was painted over with acrylic paint, and the words were scratched out using pigment ink.
Her words of truth, as of those of the other artists, come from a yearning to be heard, recognised and understood.
End Discrimination
Art is an expression of oneself, and a means throughout history of breaking down barriers. When we take the step to understand and look from the perspectives of these youths, we’re helping to end the discrimination they face.
[caption id="attachment_21049" align="aligncenter" width="2400"] By Toh Keat Siang, titled HEART.[/caption]In this art piece, items essential to the artist are put together and held up. When light is projected on these items, a silhouette of a human heart is formed.
Syringes and tablets may not be our essential items, but Toh’s art piece reminds us that we’re all the same inside.
With ‘Into The Looking Glass’, visitors stand to appreciate and support the fight against the discrimination of our youths. Listen to their stories through their art and acknowledge the difficulties they face, and their creativity and presence.
In our ever-increasing world of connectivity, it is exhibitions like Into The Looking Glass that will truly connect us with others on a deeper level.
Disconnect from the bombardment of stories and listen to individual ones by our local youths and artists.

Five Reasons Why You Should Try Parkour At Least Once In Your Life
From scaling walls to jumping from rooftop to rooftop, the action movie junkie in us has always admired the stunts performed by the spies/secret agents. But as someone who feels a sense of achievement from just walking on the balancing beam at the fitness corner downstairs without falling, we sort of put our dreams of joining the spy-hood behind. That was until we were given the chance to attend a Parkour class.
Our ambassadors, Chelsea and Cheryl, attended the class too. Here’s a video of their experience:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BN4Ih55DygN/?taken-by=cherzinga
A French invented sport that focuses on overcoming obstacles in urban environments through running, jumping or climbing, Parkour is definitely not for the non-nimble. It’s sort of like a mandatory sport for spies in training.
[caption id="attachment_20165" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Tan Chi Ying, one of Singapore’s Parkour pioneers and founder of A2 Movements[/caption]As we stood in the company of Tan Chi Ying, one of the pioneers of Singapore Parkour scene and founder of The Free Runner Lodge, an indoor Parkour facility, resembles a playground without stairs (who needs them when you can swing/climb/flip your way around, right?). Established in 2010, A2 Movements is Singapore’s first Parkour academy.
[caption id="attachment_20166" align="alignnone" width="1000"] The Free Runner Lodge – An indoor Parkour facility by A2 Movments[/caption]After a couple of stretches, we stood face-to-face with a wooden block that was half our height.
Our mission was to place both our hands on the block’s surface before swinging our legs over and bringing our whole body over the obstacle. Sounds pretty doable, right? Wrong.
After multiple bruises the size of eggs on our legs, we’ve got to say, it definitely is not as easy as action movie stars make it out to be. It’s been a long introduction, so here are five reasons why Parkour will keep us coming back for more (bruises).
1. It’s A Great Workout
Never, ever underestimate the power of Parkour to work your muscles.
After an embarrassing half hour trying Parkour and using muscles we didn’t know existed, we were exhausted.
[caption id="attachment_20168" align="alignnone" width="1616"] Students in training[/caption]So if you’re starved for time or are just looking to try a new workout, try Parkour.
2. It Pushes You Out Of Your Comfort Zone
As the Parkour session progressed, we found ourselves pushing our boundaries and achieving something we never thought was possible.
[caption id="attachment_20199" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Parkour puts your body to the test[/caption]Most of us are right-handers, and we’re never good at using the left hand for anything. After some practice (and persuasion), not only did we manage to use our left hands to support our body weight, we were surprisingly comfortable with it.
3. It’s Really, Really Fun
It’s one thing to watch your favorite actors (or stuntmen) perform the stunts, and another to actually sort of perform them. Not only is it enjoyable, but the sense of achievement upon completion is also really high. Imagine doing this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R51FaRPCio0
Of course, tons of practice is needed, but how fun did that look? Super.
4. It’s a Solo Sport
Much like hitting the gym, Parkour focuses on you and you only. When we first stepped into class, we were surrounded by existing students who were too busy practicing their mid-air flips to notice our building nervousness. Die, sure kenna judge.
[caption id="attachment_20200" align="aligncenter" width="960"] No one’s judging here[/caption]But as the session progressed, it hit us that firstly, everyone is here to learn. Secondly, everyone else is too busy perfecting their own moves to bother about you.
5. It Keeps One Unbelievably Young
Despite Chi Ying’s jaw-dropping consecutive midair somersaults, what really made our jaws drop was his age.
[caption id="attachment_20169" align="alignnone" width="1367"] How many of us can soar through the air like this after we hit the big three O?[/caption]When asked for his secret to looking almost ten years younger than his actual age, Parkour was the answer. For those who are wondering, Chi Ying is 30 years old.
It may require a lot of practice, but Parkour has got to be one of the most satisfying sports around.
For those who are interested, the good news is that A2 Movements holds classes every day of the week and has various time slots for you to choose from! If you’re undecided about a long-time commitment ($200 for unlimited sessions a month), fear not – A2 Movements offers a one off-session ($25). As for the ladies, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a time slot reserved just for you.
Personal trainings aside, A2 Movements also conducts workshops and events, so if you’re looking for a unique corporate bonding experience, free to check Now, here’s your chance to win a Parkour session for two!

Sarnies’ New Menu Packs A Solid Punch: From Curry Pasta To Overflowing Burgers!
Oft regarded as a tranquil sanctuary for coffee buffs and Aussie grub addicts, Sarnies has bowled us over with its latest dinner menu of hearty, honest-to-goodness cuisine.
In celebration of their 6 years of serving up comfort food and specialty coffee, Chef Zak has concocted a new dinner menu with dishes packing a solid punch.
Sarnies has always placed an emphasis on providing wholesome meals made from scratch using only fresh, quality ingredients.
Their new dinner menu (served from 6pm onwards) features grass-fed beef, chicken free from any hormones or antibiotics, bacon cured in-house, and bread kneaded by hand.
Appetizers:
1. Spicy Buffalo Wings ($12)
For starters, we tried the Buffalo Wings and boy, did it awaken our raging appetites!
Less sweet and more flavourful than typical Buffalo wings, these wings packed a mouthful with their aromatic combination of spices – no fewer than 20 different spices were used.
[caption id="attachment_18049" align="alignnone" width="4320"] Dayumm, hot WILE (Wings I’d Love to Eat)[/caption]The kick of chilli was spicy enough to whet our palates just right, and to our relief, not enough to make us sweat our pores off.
The lime juice contained in the marinade added a refreshing, zesty tang to the wings, to which we give two thumbs up.
After being marinated, the wings are slow-cooked for approximately 5 hours to render the meat tender, then fried till crisp.
2. Slider trio: Grilled Haloumi, Cherry Tomatoes & Onion Jam ($13)
Their slider trio comes with a choice of Grilled Haloumi with Onion Jam & Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, or Pulled Pork with White Slaw & Homemade Barbeque Sauce.
Safe to say, we enjoyed every bite, right down to the bread buns lovingly kneaded and baked in-house daily.
The salty umami flavour of the grilled haloumi gave a boost to the rest of the ingredients, while its faint hint of milkiness gently awakened our tastebuds.
[caption id="attachment_18051" align="alignnone" width="4320"] Haloumi grilled to golden perfection[/caption]At the same time, the roasted cherry tomatoes went to work in the texture department as they burst readily with a bite, releasing juicy tomato-ey goodness in an obscenely extravagant fashion.
Alongside all that hullabaloo, the onion jam served as a great accompaniment. Ever so tart and fruity, it gave the slider a final polish before it went sliding down our throats.
Mains:
1. Blackened Grass-fed Sirloin, Colombian-style Chimichurri & Olive Oil Mash ($24.50)
We took a bite and imagined ourselves dining on green pastures roaming with cows – that’s how good it was, we’re not kidding.
Cooked to medium and artfully charred on the outside, the beef was tender with a firm bite and a clean, meaty flavour.
[caption id="attachment_18053" align="alignnone" width="698"] Look at that delectable pink centre[/caption]This was complemented by the refreshing Colombian-style chimichurri which gave the dish a refreshing twist.
Beneath the sirloin steak, lay a bed of silky smooth mash decadently flavoured with truffle oil – talk about hidden treasures, now you’ll get to taste it too.
2. Southern Indian Style Hand-Cut Pappardelle with Prawns, Coconut Milk & Curry Leaves ($19.50)
This was, in short, the best part of our night!
The broad, flat pasta noodles were hand-made and hand-cut by the chef himself, cooked to al dente perfection with a lovely springy bite.
Tossed in a generous amount of creamy coconut sauce, its bold curry fragrance hit us from across the café.
[caption id="attachment_18054" align="alignnone" width="698"] Golden af, my eyes hurt but my mouth waters[/caption]Aromatic curry leaves were sprinkled atop the pasta to complete the picture of perfection.
We would love to say that it was delicious, but that wouldn’t do it sufficient justice.
3. Texas Style Burger with Overnight Smoked Brisket, White Slaw, Dijon, Gherkins, BBQ Sauce & Hand Cut Wedges ($26.50)
The best burgers are those overflowing with messy goodness and outrageously ridiculous proportions, as this one has taught us.
It gave new meaning to the phrase “a tall order”, as it was so chock full of smoked beef strips and creamy slaw that we couldn’t get it into our mouths all at once.
[caption id="attachment_18056" align="alignnone" width="4320"] More stacked than you, bro[/caption]The beef brisket was tender and finely-sliced, with a prominent smoky aroma it had acquired from being thoroughly infused with fragrant woodsmoke.
Paired with a soft burger bun freshly kneaded and baked that very day, there was absolutely nothing to gripe about.
For potato and truffle lovers, the burger comes with hand-cut wedges and a velvety truffle dip to pacify your cravings.
Dessert:
Churros with Salted Caramel & Chocolate Sauce ($10)
Crisp on the outside and doughy soft on the inside, this is exactly what we call good churros, no?
The dark chocolate sauce magically transformed the sweet choux pastry into a wand of bittersweet devilry.
Our personal favourite was the combination of the churros and the salted caramel sauce. The latter was ooey, gooey and very much like a more buttery version of melted toffee.
We went away utterly convinced that some friendships are meant to be. Crispy, fluffy churros and rich sticky caramel are gonna be BFFs for life.
Our ambassador, Valerie, visited Sarnies too! Here’s her experience:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BMi7Z5_goTs/?taken-by=cheeriosvalerie
By night’s end, we wound up with delicious grubby fingers, food-full bellies, and our belts two notches looser. If you’re keen on wholesome eating which tastes as good as sin, come grab some grub at Sarnies!

Heads up, fellow Korean BBQ lovers, for we have some good news for you! The ever-popular E!GHT Korean BBQ has just opened its second outlet at Shaw Centre with a bigger and juicier menu to boot.
Good things should be shared, and after a delectable experience at E!GHT’s flagship outlet at Clark Quay, we just can’t wait to tell you more about our experience.
Here’s why E!GHT Korean BBQ ought to be on your to-eat list:
E!GHT’s Signature 8 Colours Set
With the restaurant named after this dish, the 8 Colours Set is without doubt, the pride and joy of E!GHT Korean BBQ.
As its name suggests, you’ll be able to savour 8 mouth-watering strips of pork belly, all marinated in 8 different flavours.
The list of flavours to expect, in the recommended order of tasting are: wine, original, garlic, herb, curry, miso, red pepper paste, and finally kalbi.

How’s that for a fulfilling meal?
[caption id="attachment_17811" align="aligncenter" width="527"] Fully cooked! (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]The proper and oh-so-good way to eat Korean BBQ: wrap the meat inside a lettuce leaf, add kimchi and sauce, and stuff it all into your mouth!
[caption id="attachment_17812" align="aligncenter" width="523"] (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]Here’s the seafood bean paste stew that comes with the set!
The 8 Colours Set costs $98, and serves 3-4 people.
If you’re looking for something less filling, you could also go for smaller sets such as the Flower Pork Set ($68) or the 4 Colours Set ($58).
As with the 8 Colours Set, all of these sets come with side dishes and seafood bean paste stew.
If you’re wondering why the meat appears to be slightly pricey, it’s because all of these sets feature Mangalitsa pork, a top-grade Hungarian variety. We can vouch for its quality – it is incredibly juicy and tender.
In fact, Mangalitsa is said to be the “Kobe beef” of pork! Apparently, it is lower in cholesterol, and possesses higher levels of zinc and iron as compared to other types of pork. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth here.
More than just pork
If you’d like more than just BBQ pork, don’t worry, because the restaurant serves other dishes too!
From Beef Bulgogi Bibimbap ($18) to Kimchi Fried Rice ($8) and Seafood Pancake ($20), there’s definitely enough variety for you to complete your meal as you wish.
Those who’re on a tighter budget can also consider the weekday set lunches and specials -rice and stew sets from $8.
One of the comfort foods of Korean cuisine – Kimchi fried rice!
Some house brew, anyone?
As any Korean will know, no Korean BBQ meal is complete without some good alcohol.
Keeping in line with this practice, E!GHT Korean BBQ offers a great selection of drinks on its menu as well.
While standard fare such as beer and soju can be found on the drinks menu, the highlight we feel has definitely got to be their flavoured makgeoli (fermented Korean rice wine), all of which are brewed in-house.
Diners can choose from several flavours, such as the new Organic Honey Makgeolli ($35), as well as the Yucha Makgeolli ($35), Passionfruit Makgeolli ($35) and Joo Brew ($28).
[caption id="attachment_17821" align="aligncenter" width="384"] Yucha Makgeolli! (Image Credits: Author)[/caption]We particularly liked the Yucha Makgeolli since it was so refreshing, with the right amount of sweetness – definitely the perfect complement to a savoury meal!
Full service amidst a comfortable setting
With a seating capacity of 80, the new outlet at Shaw Centre looks to be just as spacious – if not even more so – than its Clark Quay counterpart. [=
The place is large and spacious – no worries about bringing a large group of friends here then!
You can also expect full service at E!GHT, where staff will prepare all the food for you. All you really need to do is eat.
Perhaps the most attractive point of all – besides the food – would be the restaurant’s effective ventilation system, which guarantees that you’ll leave the place without smelling like BBQ for the rest of the day. How awesome is that?
So there you have it!
Sounds delectable, doesn’t it?
Now that you know what lies in store for you, all that’s left to do is to head to town and satisfy your carvings!
Best of all, both outlets are centrally located and easily accessible, which means they are convenient for everyone.
Bon appétit!

Monkey Goes West Is Back This Year With More Laughs & Catchy Tunes!
With the year of the Monkey coming to an end, here’s how you can send it off with a bang – by checking out the award-winning Monkey Goes West.
Set to take stage at Drama Centre Theatre from 18 November to 17 December 2016, Monkey Goes West is cheeky retelling of our beloved Chinese fantasy classic – Journey To The West.
Unlike the original story that ended in India, this one will take you on an epic Singaporean thrill ride from Haw Par Villa to Jurong West.
Adventure of a Lifetime
Monkey Goes West tells the tale of an orphan named Ah Tang who ran away from home after a argument with his family.
[caption id="attachment_17786" align="alignnone" width="800"] Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]He then finds himself transported to a strange land and he befriends a trio of fellow travellers: Wukong the cheeky Monkey King; Pigsy, a brave but always-hungry warrior; and Sandy, a stubborn but loyal river ogre.
[caption id="attachment_17782" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]Together, the fearless four embark on an adventure of a lifetime, one filled with trials and dangers.
Can they tame the rowdy fire-breathing Red Boy? Will they be able to defeat the monstrous King Bull and his man-eating wife, Princess Iron Fan?
And more importantly, will Ah Tang ever find a place that he can call home?
Award Winning Production & Team
Monkey Goes West was completely sold out on its first run in 2014, playing to more than 15,000 theatre goers.
It then went on to dominate the 2015 Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards with a whopping 7 nominations, more than any other production that year.
[caption id="attachment_17783" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]They eventually bagged the awards for Production of the Year, Readers’ Choice Award for Production of the Year, and Best Costume Design (Tube Gallery by Phisit & Saxit).
[caption id="attachment_17781" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]This time round, the play will be directed by Broadway Beng Sebastian Tan, written by Alfian Sa’at, with music composed by Elaine Chan.
Both Sebastian and Elaine were nominated for the Best Director and Best Sound Design or Original Score category of the 2015 awards respectively.
[caption id="attachment_17784" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]On top of that, the cast of the play includes some of Singapore’s most experienced veteran actors and rising stars – Sugie Phua (nominated for Best Actor) and Siti Khalijah (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) will be sharing the stage with familiar faces like Chua Enlai, Darius Tan, Joshua Lim, and many more talented actors and actresses.
Packed with catchy tunes, hilarious gags, cool wushu moves and magic, you can count on Monkey Goes West to brighten up your day and keep you laughing, so you can end your year with a blast.
