There’s An Art Exhibition Called ‘Singawhore’ And It Makes Brutal Jabs At Local Culture

Different people have different ways of celebrating our nation on its 52nd birthday.

Some people launch crazy, never-before-seen deals, some people pay homage to our country through inside jokes we Singaporeans are all privy to, and some people… create profane works of art in the name of celebrating Singapore culture and the Singaporean identity.

We’re talking about A Good Citizen, a.k.a ‘好公民’.

Helmed by Citizen Dan, The Good Citizen is known for its brutally honest, unfiltered works of art that traverse themes such as politics, gender, race and religion.

Pop culture-Singapore crossovers are not unusual for the group, who’ve likened the recent #FamiLEE drama to an episode of Game Of Thrones…

[caption id="attachment_28683" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: A Good Citizen Facebook[/caption]

depicted how even a Xenomorph (Lee No Morph, get it?) would be tamed into subservience in our strict, regimented society, and more.

[caption id="attachment_28682" align="aligncenter" width="650"] Image Credit: A Good Citizen Facebook[/caption]

From 11 August – 3 September, A Good Citizen will be bringing Singaporeans a series of brand new works in an exhibition called ‘Singawhore‘. Given the name of the exhibition and A Good Citizen’s track record of creating unabashed depictions of trending events in Singapore, we can only imagine what we’ll see once it opens.

[caption id="attachment_28687" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Remember this? (Image Credit: A Good Citizen Facebook)[/caption]

This FREE exhibition will be happening at ARTBLOVK GALLERY, and there will also be a sharing session with Citizen Dan on the opening day, 11 August 2017 at 7pm – 9pm, at the same location. Refreshments will also be provided.

If you like the works you see, limited original artworks will also be available for purchase!

Can’t get enough of satire and have a dark sense of humor? If you do, make sure to check out what the people at A Good Citizen have up their sleeves!

KOOZA Ignites The Child In You With A Wondrous Journey Of Nail-Biting Acrobatics And Playful Clowns

Many of us have the impression that a circus is where you see contortionists, jugglers and tight-rope walkers doing stunts and tricks, and clowns goofing around with their silly antics; we think of it as a place for slapstick entertainment.

Last week, I caught Cirque du Soleil Kooza, and I realised just how wrong I was.

[caption id="attachment_28376" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Big Top[/caption]

The latest addition to the world-famous theatrical producer Cirque du Soleil’s series, KOOZA, is back in Singapore.

Presented in the intimate setting of the iconic blue and yellow Big Top tents that sits beside Marina Bay Sands, KOOZA pays homage to Cirque du Soleil’s roots by combining thrilling acrobatic acts with the traditional art of clowning.

Inspired by the Sanskrit word “Koza”, which means “box”, “chest”, or “treasure”, the 140-minute show follows the journey of “The Innocent”, who opens the portal to a magical world through a mysterious box.

Portrayed by an endearing pyjamas-clad character, “The Innocent” took us through the acts, the whole time reflecting exactly how we felt as an audience – in awe of everything.

[caption id="attachment_28389" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Beautiful Stage Set[/caption]

We were thoroughly impressed by the stunning stage props, seamless transitions, the dazzling lights that complemented the acts, the adorable antics of the clowns, and the incredible stunts by the performers.

[caption id="attachment_28377" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Cirque du Soleil[/caption]

The Hoops Manipulation was one of first to leave an impression.

While most of us can’t even handle one hula hoop, the performer showed off her exceptional balance and impressive dexterity, spinning up to seven hoops at once, and making it look effortless while at it!

It’s no exaggeration to say that she was one with the hoops as she glided around on the aerial hoop, changing poses quickly while still managing to look graceful while doing so.

[caption id="attachment_28373" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Double Highwire[/caption]

Another highlight was the Double Highwire, which involved four nimble performers who not only demonstrated their remarkable ability to balance, but who also had to jump over one another, have a fencing match, and even cycle on a thin wire!

[caption id="attachment_28379" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Cirque du Soleil[/caption]

The Skeleton Dance takes you to the craziness of the dark side with its choreography and flamboyant feather costumes. Pretty as it was, it served as a well-timed break (to us at least) as our hearts were racing from the intense acts happening back to back.

[caption id="attachment_28374" align="aligncenter" width="768"] The Wheel of Death[/caption] [caption id="attachment_28381" align="alignnone" width="1024"] The Wheel of Death (Image Credit: Cirque du Soleil)[/caption]

Our favourite act of the night was undoubtedly the Wheel of Death.

As the name suggests, a small slip up on the wheel can send you plummeting to your death. Be prepared to have your breath taken away and your nerves at an all time high as you watch the brave duo tame the enormous spinning contraption.

Throughout the night, we were kept at the edge of our seats. The crazy stunts we saw had us raving through the intermission and at the end of the show. The live singer and band, as well as goofy antics by the adorable clowns made it that much more entertaining.

True to Cirque du Soleil’s mission to invoke imagination and evoke emotions, we left the show wondering how amazing it would be if we worked or lived in a circus. Whether you’re already a fan of Cirque du Soleil, or have never caught any or their shows, don’t miss KOOZA! You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll enjoy your experience!

DiscoverSG Pro-Tip: Visit the toilet before you head over to the Big Top, and head over early! You don’t want to squeeze with the crowd for both ticket collection and bag check at the entrance.

Cirque du Soleil KOOZA will be performing in Singapore until 20 August 2017. Tickets are still available so get your preferred seats before they’re gone. Ticket prices start from $61.50, with the top tiered VIP Rouge – First Row tickets starting at $318.

3. Closing of Sungei Road Thieves Market

Sadly, another remnant of Singapore’s past will soon be no more.

After eight decades of existence, Singapore’s oldest flea market in Sungei Road will be turning its last page.

[caption id="attachment_27804" align="aligncenter" width="930"] Image Credit: Sam’s Alfresco Coffee[/caption]

The open-air market was already reduced by half once, to make way for Jalan Besar MRT station.

This time, all of it will be cleared for residential and commercial developments.

Known as the “Thieves Market”, stolen items were once notoriously sold here.

Popular with tourists, foreign workers, and locals, it offers all sorts of nibs and nubs ranging from household items to jewellery and electronic items!

Come down and have a glimpse of this lesser-known bit of history before it’s gone for good!

Have A Scent-Sational Time At This Pop-Up That Lets You Create Your Own Fragrance For Under $50

Can’t seem to find the perfect fragrance to complement your style and personality? Or simply looking to switch things up?

Whichever it is, we’ve got the solution!

As part of its pop-up store promo this month, up-and-coming fragrance and mixology specialist Oo La Lab has launched Chemistry of Oo, a sensorial workshop where you can not only learn all about fragrance design, but also create your own personalised fragrance.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? The DiscoverSG team attended one of these sessions with our ambassadors just last week, so here’s a whiff of what to expect at Chemistry of Oo:

[caption id="attachment_27646" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Oo La Lab (Image Credit: Vivienne)[/caption]

A Scent-sational Experience

[caption id="attachment_27648" align="aligncenter" width="4752"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s imperative that you identify 5 to 7 notes (from over 25) you like best to ensure you love your final product. For those unacquainted, ‘notes’ is fragrance terminology for the basic building blocks of scent. Because your fragrance is going to be uniquely you, you’ll need to take note (pun intended) of what you like and have an idea of what fragrance you want to end up with.

Notes vary in intensity and type. They can be fresh, floral, oriental or woody. From the subtle and fresh Citrus and Tea scents to the more intense and complex Musk, Chypre and even Leather, there’s something for everyone!

[caption id="attachment_27650" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] With over 25 basic notes, there’s something for everyone (Image Credit: Vivienne)[/caption]

Getting It Just Right

[caption id="attachment_27651" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Building your own fragrance 101 (Image Credit: Vivienne)[/caption]

After you’ve identified your favourite notes, it’s time to try out the various combinations to see what works best!

Since you’ll be combining about 5 notes, you’ll need to experiment with various proportions to see how they turn out. This is where the fun really starts!

Participants will each receive a mini chemistry set of sorts, complete with a test tube, beaker, vials and more. Instructions are clear and easy to follow, and should you have any questions (e.g the ideal ratio), simply ask the staff at Oo La Lab and they’ll be more than happy to give you some tips.

[caption id="attachment_27653" align="aligncenter" width="4898"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

Don’t be afraid to make as many attempts as you need to get your fragrance exactly right!

Mixing Your Fragrance

[caption id="attachment_27652" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] DiscoverSG Ambassadors Chelsea and Cheryl hard at work (Image Credit: Cheryl)[/caption]

Once you’re happy with your concoction, it’s time to actually build your fragrance and bottle it up!

All you have to do is mix the notes in the ratio that you want, but at a much greater volume. This is made easy with the measuring cylinder provided. A checklist will also be provided so you can keep track of all the notes that will go into your bottle.

[caption id="attachment_27654" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

You will be provided with a pretty bottle to keep your fragrance. The default size is 20ml.

Crimp, Label and Seal The Deal

[caption id="attachment_27655" align="aligncenter" width="4898"] Image Credit: Oo La Lab x Mandarin Gallery[/caption]

When you’re done mixing your fragrance, you’ll need to bring your bottle to one of the staff, who will then add a dash of ethanol and finally seal – or crimp – your bottle. You’ll also get to name your own custom-made fragrance, which will appear on the label! Name it whatever you want and once your bottle is sealed, voilà, you’re done!
