Amongst the selection is Forrest Gump, a movie classic probably even the most reluctant cinema patron has heard of. Starring Tom Hanks as the slow-witted Forrest Gump, this feel-good ’90s film shows one man’s epic journey through significant historical events without him actually knowing their significance. Full of funny anecdotes and stories, this film will be sure to warm the cockles of your heart.
Brooklyn – Romantic drama

If you’re into something more recent, we’d recommend the recent award-winning Brooklyn, a film featuring a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Despite falling into a new romance, the Irish maiden gets homesick trying to assimilate into the Brooklyn culture. Watch as she struggles with the decision between the two countries and all that exist within. Do note that this film is NC16.
Fans of The Theory of Everything on the other hand, will appreciate The Man Who Knew Infinity, a story about a self-taught mathematical genius discovered by a Cambridge professor. Food wise, fans of Shakespeare in the Park will find the options familiar. Helmed by the team from If you’re feeling fancy, feel free to indulge in an Antipasti Platter ($24.50) or even a Cheese Platter ($24.50). Pair them with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir ($10 per glass/$48 per bottle). Snacks such as Gourmet Popcorn ($5) and non-alcoholic sparkling juices and soda will be available. Of course, you’re welcomed to prepare your own picnic basket but do note that all alcohol must be purchased at the event.

The bag itself
First, let’s start with the actual bag. It comes in our two national colours, red and white, and is made of a translucent plastic. Together with its unique structured frame, this year’s goodie bag seems like a nod towards the future. Talk about futuristic vibes! Moreover, it can be carried 2 ways: as a bag pack or a shoulder bag. The bag also comes with a rain cover. Perfect for Singapore’s temperamental climate! Impressive!

Moving on to the National Day themed items. National flag, Singapore scarf, patriotic tattoos- check! The goodie bag committee has also thoughtfully included a foldable fan just in case you feel warm during the show. Besides the regulars, this year’s merchandise stars the LED wristband everyone’s been talking about!
The LED wristband flickers brightly in a kaleidoscopic array of colours. It is programmed to match the pumping music and movement of the performers due to its wireless connection. As a result, this high-tech twist allows the audience to be involved in the parade on a whole new level. Audiences simply have to wear it!

This year’s NDP 2016 Goodie Bag features… a Comic Book?
Next, we move on to the printed materials. NDP 2016 Goodie Bag includes the ever-popular discount voucher booklet in addition to the programme booklet. You can stay informed of the parade’s highlights and find the lyrics to this year’s melodious theme song, “Tomorrow’s Here Today”!
Furthermore, there will be a comic book featuring the parade’s hero, Badang. The artful comic illustrates Badang’s journey and the origin of the Singapore Stone. It makes learning about Singapore’s history, fun especially for the little ones. A must-read, we say!

A trash bag seems like the strangest addition to the NDP 2016 Goodie Bag this year. Correction: an NDP themed trash bag! You can play your part in keeping the indoor stadium clean by putting all trash into this sizeable trash bag.
Also, a packet of tissue and wet wipes are included, so you can clean up any mess. Don’t forget the adorable card holder with its friendly reminder about striving for a sustainable Singapore!

Makan time!
Finally, let’s have a look at the snacks in the goodie bag! It includes crowd pleasers like double-chocolate Hello Panda, the classic Keng Guan tidbits and Tai Sun peanuts. It won’t be an NDP goodie bag without a bottle of NeWater, just in case you get thirsty. Also, there is a packet of Nin Hom Herbal Candy to soothe tired throats. If we could describe NDP 2016 (National Day Parade 2016) in one word, it would be ‘spectacular’.
With a catchy theme, ‘Building Our Singapore Of Tomorrow‘, and set against the refreshing backdrop of Singapore Indoor Stadium, here are the reasons NDP 2016 will be the best one yet!

NDP 2016 – The First NDP at Indoor Stadium
Singapore will celebrate her birthday in the newly-renovated Singapore Indoor Stadium for the first time. That’s right! Fret not about the hot sun and enjoy the show indoors while staying cool! In addition, the venue boasts a huge seating capacity of up to 12,000. You can also look forward to conveniently located restrooms.

Jaw-dropping Light Shows
Next up, the dazzling light shows are undoubtedly the most impressive part of NDP 2016 itself. Be awed by the ingenious use of light effects throughout the parade. Keep a lookout for Act 3 and 4 when the stadium lights go off.
In fact, every spectator can be part of the performance simply by wearing the LED wristbands distributed in goodie bags! The LED wristbands pulsate with colours. It even syncs with the parade’s live music, light shows and body movements. Just imagine the stadium as the night sky, and your wristbands form part of the galaxy of twinkling stars!

Our Prime Minister has remarked that “Singapore is like a unicorn. One of a kind, a special animal, no other in the world. It works well, (and) has unique solutions.” Indeed, NDP 2016 even stars a sparkling unicorn dancing gracefully above the audience.
Watch in awe as dancers and aerialists clad in kaleidoscopic LED costumes execute a perfectly synchronised performance. Our favourite segment was Act 5, where Singapore’s future cityscape took shape right before our eyes, made possible by 3D projections!

Drawing Inspiration from the Past
NDP 2016 features the lesser-known story of Badang. In the act ‘Bandang and The Singapore Stone‘, impressive boulders are hurled across the stage together with artistic depictions of a tribe war.
Notably, Badang represents the strength and resilience of our nation in the face of hardships. The story is set in ancient times. Incorporating the Singapore Stone into a thrilling adventure, the story tells of true bravery in times of adversity.
In a truly engaging way, Singaporeans can learn more about this national treasure!

We’re All in This Together
Do you know that this year’s parade features a performance put together by the special needs community? In the act “What A Wonderful World”, a beautiful mass display formation is inspired by creative paintings drawn by the special needs community.
You’ll even see members of the disabled society joining in the iridescent show on stage! Also, the audience will have a chance to sign together to songs like “Count On Me Singapore” and everyone’s favourite “Home”. This is to raise awareness for the deaf community.
We found it especially heartwarming to see the entire audience singing together with the performers on stage at NDP 2016. The effortless blend of engagement and emphasis on Singapore as an inclusive society will certainly impress audiences of all ages!

To Top It All Off: Fireworks
Finally, as Singaporeans, one of our favourite parts of the national parade has to be the dazzling fireworks to end the night. Though the indoor stadium maintains a partially-closed roof during the spectacle, audience members can still catch a glimpse of the ‘night-time flowers’ comfortably from their seats.
In addition, NDP 2016 features indoor fireworks as well. We say yes to the best of both worlds: indoor AND outdoor fireworks!

NDP 2016 – The Final Verdict
NDP 2016 is similar, yet extremely different from all the previous parades we’ve ever witnessed. That is, different in the best way possible. We feel that the parade does an excellent job of fostering Singaporean pride and creatively showcasing the bright future of our ever-developing country.

Extended Hours At Soak Out After Party
After the sun sets, park guests can continue to chill out in an evening after-party. It begins in front of the New York Public Library. Happening from 6pm to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays nights (except on 23 July), the facade will be transformed into eye-popping projection with mapping displays.
Live entertainment will be available exclusively after dark. Expect only the best beats and top hits!
Guests without the all day pass who wish to just attend this event are able to do so. Just purchase the after 5pm passes at $55.

Festive parades run through selected zones in the park which begin at 3pm (or 5.30pm on days when Hollywood Dreams Parade is on). Get up close and personal with 50 over characters including the Minions and Sesame Street friends at the Lagoon Stage in Hollywood zone.

1. Be sure to check out the show schedules
It is recommended that you plan your itinerary around the Waterworld show timings. For weekend visitors, plan around the magical Hollywood Dreams Parade and the incredible fireworks of the Lake Hollywood Spectacular. Do note that from now till 1o August, at 3pm (or 5.30pm on Saturdays), two floats set sail from Far Far Away or Sci-Fri City. Join in the water party at Lagoon Stage or reserve your spot in front of the Lagoon Stage at 3pm for some good procession photos.
2. Your park tickets for USS Soak Out Water Party are valid the entire day
Park guest are able to leave and return USS for the entire day. Just remember to get a hand stamp at the exit and you’re all good to go!
3. Express passes save a whole lot of time
If you wish to skip the lines at all your favourite rides and attractions, add a Universal Express or Universal Express Unlimited to your Day Pass. With the pass, you’ll have access to a separate queue with a shorter wait time!
4. Remember to waterproof your phones and bring an extra set of clothes
If you’re planning to join in the water party, bring waterproof covers or ziplock bags to protect your phone. Also, bring an extra set of clothing so you can change out after being soaked at the USS Soak Out Water Party. Store your clean clothes and valuables in the lockers.
5. Lastly, leave your water guns at home
For safety reasons, only two types of water guns are allowed. These can be purchased from the carts around the water fight area. Do note that guests can only use water guns sold at Universal Studios Singapore

STREAT 2016’s pop-up restaurant will feature three renowned chefs. They’ll create new expressions of Singapore’s iconic street food, presented in an exclusive six-hands dinner menu. One of the most sought-after chefs in the world, Canadian chef Susur Lee, is the consultant chef to the TungLok Group. He is also one of the pioneers of fusion food scene in Singapore and was recently a judge on MasterChef Asia.

Chef Lee will be collaborating with Tunglok Heen senior executive chef Ken Ling, and Restaurant Labyrinth’s chef-owner Han Liguang. Selamat Hari Raya! 7 Unique Facts About Ramadan You Never Knew
Also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Puasa is the most prominent and celebrated occasion in the Muslim community. Do you know that Hari Raya means “grand day of rejoicing” and Puasa means “fasting”? This festival marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and the start of a new month, Syawal.
Whether you are planning on visiting your Muslim friends during this Hari Raya Puasa or planning to head down to the Geylang Serai Bazaar, here’re 7 interesting things about Hari Raya Puasa you probably didn’t know.
1. Fasting Is One Of Islam’s Five Pillars

The importance of fasting among Muslims cannot be overemphasised. Prior to the festival, Ramadan is a period of sober repentance for Muslims. The purpose is to cultivate self-discipline. Besides fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims also refrain from smoking, sexual activities, and any sinful behaviour.
As one of Islam’s five pillars, the act of fasting is done for atonement, to express gratitude and empathy for the needy. After a month of fasting, Eid al-Fitr then marks the end of Ramadan as Muslims celebrate.
2. Muslims Have To Pay Taxes During Ramadan

Yes, compulsory taxes. Announced by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, annual taxes are to be contributed by Muslims during the month of Ramadan. As one of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat serves principally as the welfare contribution to poor and deprived individuals.
3. Gongsi Raya Is A Thing

From 1996 to 1998, Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year actually fell on the same week! Double celebrations then occurred amongst the Chinese and Muslim communities, which eventually led to the term “Gongsi Raya” or “Kongsi Raya”. Originating from Malaysia, the term was eventually accepted by Singaporeans to commemorate the two festivals.
These two occasions brought about a shared experience and respect for ethnic diversity and understanding of cultural differences. It fostered closer ties between the Muslims and the Chinese. House visiting was also more convenient as the majority of homes were open for visitations.
4. Oil Lamps Were Used To Attract Spirits And Angels

Oil lamps known as pelita or panjut are lit from the 20th day of Ramadan to attract spirits and angels alike. It is also believed to bring blessings to people’s homes during the night of Lailatul Qadar. These lights continue to shine brightly until the end of the festival.

Nowadays, the oil lamps are lit only for decorative purposes. Many families now use LED lights instead.
5. Traditional Outfits Used To Be Tailored Or Hand-sewn

In the past, most Malay traditional outfits were tailored (tempah) and had to be sent to respective tailors weeks before Hari Raya Puasa. Women, on the other hand, used to design and sew their outfits. Due to the busy lifestyles of Singaporeans, however, many have decided to avoid the hassle by simply shopping for their outfits online.
As part of the occasion, men don on the songkok and sinjang while the ladies wear their baju kurong or kebaya. Most families will probably spot thematic outfits, demonstrating the importance of family.
6. The Celebration Begins With Grave Visitations

The first day after Ramadan is a busy one. Muslims wake up early and begin their day with a trip to the mosque for special prayers. This is swiftly followed with visiting the graves of departed family members for an offering of “doa” (prayer verses).

During the evenings, Muslims visit the mosque to recite the Takbīr, which means “God is great”.
7. Ketupat Is Traditionally Served

While dressed in their best, friends and relatives visit each other and dig into delicious food. Visitations are also a sign of respect and an act of renewing relationships.

If you’re lucky enough to be invited for a meal, get ready to indulge in a lavish spread of beef rendang (spicy beef stew), sayur lodeh (vegetables cooked in coconut milk gravy) paired with sambal (chilli paste).
One of the must-have dishes, however, would be the ketupat. Not only served as a dish, it is also commonly used as a decorative object. Often, Muslim mothers will pass the tradition of weaving ketupat cases down to their children. Ketupat cases woven from colourful ribbons also typically adorn Malay homes during this festive period.
If you’re partaking in the festivities, do don on a bright outfit and bask in the festive atmosphere! Though Singapore only has one official public holiday, the celebrations of Hari Raya Puasa extend to three days, and for some, up to a month! For non-Muslims, do greet your Muslim friends, “Selamat Hari Raya”!
Do note that when visiting a Muslim home, attire is important. Avoid visiting in shorts, ripped jeans, sleeveless tops or skimpy dresses as your dressing may be perceived as a sign of disrespect.
