8 Singaporean Millennials Share With Us Messages They Wish They Could Tell Their Loved Ones

We Singaporeans are not an emotionless bunch (in spite of some polls saying otherwise). Yes, while we may not express our feelings openly, we Singaporeans actually do feel quite deeply.

We wanted to debunk the myth, so we had 8 millennials share with us their messages of love for the people who mean the most to them.

Messages that they wished to say, but could never pluck up the courage to.

1. ‘I am really grateful that she still loves me even though I may not have been the best brother in the world’

[caption id="attachment_19595" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Siblings[/caption]

I’m closest to my younger sister. Despite the 8 year age gap, we share a lot of common interests like basketball. Even though we don’t talk as much due to our life stages, she still comes to my room to “disturb” me once in awhile.

My favourite memory of my sister was when I was still a trainee in NS. It was my birthday and she sent a photo collage of my baby pictures with the words “Happy Birthday” through text. She was in primary school back then and even though the compilation wasn’t the most aesthetically-pleaseing, it was the effort and the act of thinking about me that made me feel grateful.

I would love to tell her how much I really appreciate her. I am really grateful that she still loves me even though I may not have been the best brother in the world.

– Yeo Khee (23)

2. ‘It was the last time we were together while he was still alive.’

[caption id="attachment_19597" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Family[/caption]

I’m an only child so I’ve always been close to my parents. We have different dynamics between us all, but I love them in their own special way.

When I had my bad breakup, they were there for me like silent pillars of support, and had their own way of showing that they cared.

My mum is the chatty type, so she talked to me and made sure I was ok at all times. My dad doesn’t speak as much, but he gave me the peace that I wanted, and kept everything to a status quo so I’ll get out of the rut faster.

I would like them to know that I love them very much, and that I will miss them terribly if they’re gone.

They taught me what love means, and have provided for me so selflessly through the years.

– Melissa (26)

4. ‘ She’s my best friend and she’s my confidant’

5. ‘He is my role model and when I see a man, I hope he is at least 50% of what my brother is’

[caption id="attachment_19601" align="alignnone" width="736"] Brother & Sister[/caption]

I’ve grown up in a very close-knit family, but I’m closest to my brother. We don’t get to spend much time together because we’re both busy working but we love catching up in front of the TV. Something I really admire about him is his confidence and his sincerity for those he loves!

He’s my role model and when I see a man, I hope he is at least 50% of what my brother is, because I doubt I can find someone exactly like him!

– Maria (22)

6. ‘Thank you for being there for me when I had nowhere to go’

[caption id="attachment_19600" align="alignnone" width="650"] pbenjay.blogspot.com[/caption]

I’m the closest to my brother, he’s always motivating me to do better.

When I do silly things, like fighting with my parents, he makes me see where I’m wrong. But he also supports me when I’m right.

I really admire his success and hard work. He did a full time job while working on his new business. He’s an entrepreneur and financial assistant now.

Thanks for being a great older brother. I couldn’t have asked for a better one.

Thanks for all your pep talks. I may not say it but they’ve helped me see things clearer.

– Anonymous (23)

8. ‘ Mum thank you for being the best mum ever.’

True Story: A Singaporean Man’s Journey As A Ladyboy In Cambodia

Standing before a nightclub with dazzling neon lights, her rusty golden locks blew gently in the wind as she took a heavy drag from her cigarette. In a figure-hugging dress and black strappy heels, Shauna strutted flawlessly from the red light district of Siem Reap to her apartment.

In the bathroom, she tugs gently at her hair, removing her curls before running water across her face. Looking up, she could barely recognise the man in the mirror. This is the story of Sean Lee, the man behind ladyboy Shauna, in Cambodia.

[caption id="attachment_19459" align="aligncenter" width="857"]Credit: Sean Lee Credit: Sean Lee[/caption]

Sitting across the man with young, boyish looks, we could hardly tell the similarities between Sean and Shauna. It might have been the blonde wig but hey, never underestimate the power of make-up.

All in all, journey of thirty-one year old Singaporean photographer Starting out as an assignment, Shauna soon developed into an immersive photography project where Sean takes on the persona of a ladyboy.

Source: www.gupmagazine.com

Just to be clear, by “taking on the persona of a ladyboy”, we mean dressing, behaving and living within Siem Reap’s red light district. Effort gao gao.

[caption id="attachment_19460" align="aligncenter" width="861"]Credit: Sean Lee Credit: Sean Lee[/caption]

As we sat down with Sean himself, we find out how his photography journey began, the inspiration behind Shauna, and what it was like becoming a Singaporean ladyboy in Siem Reap.

1. So Sean, what first made you first pick up the camera?

Oh, I’ve always had an interest in photography. Though it was after I’d graduated from junior college when my Literature teacher, who knew about my interest, introduced me to it.

Working his way up from a photographer’s assistant, Sean has, over the years, built an impressive list of clientele including DBS and Singapore Airlines where his works have been featured in several exhibitions, notably the Saatchi Gallery and Les Recontres d’Arles.

2. What do you think is the main challenge of being a professional photographer?

As a freelance photographer, I’d say the inconsistency of the jobs. You know, having no clue as to where your next job will come from. This really got to me when I was younger.

3. Let’s talk a little about Shauna. What’s the story behind the project?

I was 22 and was attending the I did try taking on different personas such as a tuk tuk driver and construction worker but they just didn’t work. So I eventually got around to Shauna and settled on a ladyboy persona.

Source: www.emahomagazine.com
Source: www.emahomagazine.com

I started with this really cheap wig and borrowed clothes from my lady friends, who also taught me to put on my make up.

[caption id="attachment_19457" align="aligncenter" width="850"]Credit: Sean Lee Credit: Sean Lee[/caption]

It started out as a week-long assignment but I ended up spending two years flying back and forth Cambodia to complete the project. During the process, I took on professional make-up lessons and learnt how to strut in stilettos!

4. What was it like, being Shauna?

Here’s the funny thing. Whenever I look back at her photos, it’s like looking at a complete stranger (even though that person is me).

[caption id="attachment_19010" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]untitled-design Credit: Sean Lee[/caption]

Taking on her persona wasn’t easy, because some days you just don’t feel committed, but other days you are completely into character. It’s crazy.

5. Your photos of Shauna are amazing. Did you have any help in taking them?

Well most of them I took with tripods and self-timers, though I did have a friend of mine who would help me in taking some of the shots.

Source: www.emahomagazine.comSource: www.emahomagazine.com

It was great to have him around because you know, sometimes I’d need him to explain to patrons that we’re dong photography project.

6. What would be your main takeaway from Shauna?

Life is very different in the red light district of Siem Reap. Many of them don’t have a choice, but some of them are honestly looking for love.

[caption id="attachment_19458" align="aligncenter" width="859"]screen-shot-2016-12-05-at-3-53-28-pm Credit: Sean Lee[/caption]

I’ve actually bumped into one of the working girls a couple of years later, who told me about her marriage and new life abroad. I’m really happy for them.

7. So what have you been up to lately? Tell us a little more!

Something I’m currently working on is Looking at my students made me reflect on my youth and the friends that I used to hang out with, partied with, fallen in love with.

[caption id="attachment_19007" align="alignnone" width="1000"]Young Love Source: Sean Lee Young Love | Source: Sean Lee[/caption]

Through this project, I hope to really capture the essence and innocence of youth, to document this precious stage of life that we all come to miss.

8. Lastly, any advice for budding photographers?

Never. Stop. Working. Assist as much as you can, because that’s where you learn the essential skills to photography. Never forget to work on projects that are close to your heart, to pursue projects that you’re interested in, where you’re not in it just for the money.

If this isn’t dedication, we don’t know what is.

For those how are interested, Shauna now comes in a photobook and is available Instagram.

Proceeds of the fundraiser will be channelled to Causes for Animals (Singapore), a no-kill shelter that strives towards a stray free Singapore.

Registration is currently closed due to overwhelming response, but you can still donate to the cause or just head to the event to spend time with furry friends.

What If We Told You, You’ve Been Choosing Your Christmas Gifts Wrong All Along?

Let’s be honest, while we Singaporeans love Christmas (the lights, the food, the endless parties and get-togethers!), picking out the perfect gifts for family and friends can be pretty tough.

We can readily admit that pinning down that unique, extra special and thoughtful gift for a loved one is no easy feat.

Chances are, after hours of searching and walking up and down Orchard Road, you would have settled for the typical gift sets, hampers and bags of sweet treats to give out to family, friends and colleagues (don’t even try to deny it)!

Life Hack: How To Save $100K Before You Hit 30 In Singapore

Most of us wish to see a six-figure sum in our bank account. We all hope that that day would come sooner.

We have read the news of how young and savvy bankers or entrepreneurs have already made their first 100k well before they hit their 30s.

While most of us do not run businesses and are not born with a silver spoon in our mouths, it is still possible for us to see those golden six numbers before we turn 30!

[caption id="attachment_18180" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Credit: mirror.co.uk Credit: Credit: Credit: gobankingrates.com[/caption]

There are numerous popular savings accounts such as OCBC 360 or UOB One Account that offer attractive yearly interests rates of up to 3.25% and 3.33% respectively.

Here is a breakdown of how much additional interest you can earn simply by saving with OCBC 360 and fulfilling some of their requirements!

[caption id="attachment_18172" align="aligncenter" width="560"]Credit: Verine Ling Credit: Verine Ling[/caption]

The total interest per month may seem like a small amount, but do note that interest is calculated on a cumulative basis.

This means that the more money you have in your bank, the more interest you’ll earn! Additionally, you’ll earn even more interest by adding to a lump sum in the bank over many months and years.

3. Lock Your Money In Fixed Deposits

For some of us, we simply cannot resist the urge to spend.

This does not mean that it is impossible to achieve that 100k goal – it simply means that an alternative measure has to be taken, such as locking your money in a fixed deposit.

[caption id="attachment_17862" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]Credit: chalakudybank.com Credit: Credit: i Credit: blog.bankbazaar.com[/caption]

Some examples include AIA Wealth Pro Advantage policy, where you can enjoy the flexibility of customising your investment portfolio while enjoying certain insurance coverage.

Additionally, you can even opt to withdraw your earnings before the plan matures without incurring additional fees. All with just a single premium of S$5,000.

[caption id="attachment_18178" align="aligncenter" width="673"]Credit: Linkedin.com Credit: Linkedin.com[/caption]

However, one thing to be careful of here.

These investment-linked policies typically do not have a guaranteed cash payout as the policy value is built upon the performance of the sub-funds invested in.

If the stocks that the fund manager invests in performs poorly, you might very well end up at the losing end.

Look for policies that offer a fixed guaranteed cash payout in addition to the non-guaranteed payout.

Do not be misled by the high non-guaranteed rate that is typically advertised and jump straight into it without doing your market research!

5. Buying stocks or shares

This is perhaps one of the quickest yet riskiest ways to boost your savings.

While there is no denying that investing in stocks can make you rich literally overnight, it can completely wipe out your entire savings if you are not careful as well.

[caption id="attachment_17864" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]Credit: wisegeek.com Credit: Credit: Credit: truelancer.com[/caption]

It could be anything – from being an Uber driver to giving private tuition or making use of existing skill sets (software skills, for example) for side gigs.

For instance, a part-time private tutor teaching at secondary school level could earn an average of about S$35 to S$40 per hour per subject. Assuming a frequency of twice per week for 2 hours, this adds up to approximately S$560 to S$640 per month.

Definitely a great way to supplement your savings!

7. Cut Back On Unnecessary Spending

Finally, save more by cutting back on unnecessary spending. Do you really need to get your caffeine fix at Starbucks or dine at cafes every weekend? Less spending translates to more savings!

A old-school trick to curb these “persistent” spending habits is to avoid credit cards.

These plastic cards offer you the temptation to spend with ridiculously high credit limits and promises of fantastic rebates and cashback.

Running Low On Battery? Charge Your Phone For Free At 200+ Places In S’pore!

Have you just seen a low battery notification on your phone? Didn’t bring your portable charger?

Fret not! Here, we present a list of places in town and the CBD for you to charge your phone for free.

Gift of Power

On SG50, Singapore Power granted all dying phones a lifeline.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-4-05-26-pm

There are close to 200 power charging stations all over Singapore islandwide!

Best of all, it costs nothing to charge your mobile devices.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-4-07-49-pm
These 200 stations are located mostly in tertiary institutes, hospitals and public libraries.

If you’re in town, some of the charging stations include:

Somerset – Library @ Orchard
Bugis – National Library
Marina Bay Sands – Gardens by the Bay
Chinatown – Library @ Chinatown.

For the full list of charging stations, Credit:

Some also provide the specific cable for your device, so you don’t need to worry if you did not bring your cable.

Borrow a portable charger and charge your phone for free at these shopping centres in town

Ion Orchard: Head to the concierge or the information counter. Fill up a form to borrow a power bank from them. Cables for various phone models are available upon request.

313@Somerset: Power banks are available at the information counter for members of Club 313 only.

Orchard Central: Head over to the concierge, produce your NRIC, and fill in a form. You can use their power banks as you shop. Remember to return the power banks by 9.45pm. Cables for Iphone and Android are available.

Go forth and charge

And there you have it, a list of places where you can go to, to charge your dying device.

With the increased use of mobile devices, perhaps more malls should offer such charging services. That would definitely bring a smile to all shoppers, especially us, social media dwellers.

Share this with your friends and family, so they’ll never borrow your portable charger, or be unreachable because their phones have run out of batt.

Nestled in acclaimed nail salon, esBoudoir, in Vivo City, customers can watch their perfect nail colour being mixed by hand.

nail-deck-2

Despite being tailor-made to cater to your wildest whims, a 5-ml bottle of your desired colour only costs $11, while a 10-ml bottle goes for $16.

From 17 October 2016 to 31 December 2016, feel free to bring in discontinued lacquer and a picture or an item of colour you wish to bottle. Within 10 minutes, Lacquer Bar will have that colour blended and packaged like a genie in a bottle.

If you have no colour in mind, the colourist will most gladly assist you.

Our Experience at the Lacquer Bar

We popped by, and were blown away by the warmth of the colourist in session and the staffs’ level of professionalism.

For the first time in our lives, we felt as though we were peeking behind a magician’s curtain.

Except, instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, we were creating concoctions that went onto our nails.

[video width="960" height="540" m4v="https://discoversg.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/large.m4v"][/video]

At the lacquer bar, we had an impromptu flash of inspiration from a pair of beloved faded denim shorts.

During our one-on-one consultation with the colourist, we asked for the nail polish colour to resemble “old jeans”, an all-time comfort wear close to our hearts.

We pointed at a sky blue pamphlet close by for reference, and requested for the colourist to “add a bit of grey into that blue”.

The Science of Beauty

Now, here’s where some technical jargon comes in.

The colourist used a device, called a spectrometer, to analyse the colour of the pamphlet and pick out the exact shade of blue on it. After that, the spectrometer used an in-house algorithm to convert the digital colour to a formula. How cool is that?

From there, the colourist used chemistry laboratory equipment to blend the colours by hand.

img_6609-min

After the colours were blended, we were given small samples to test on our nails, under white and warm lights respectively.

We thought that this was especially thoughtful of them!

This countered one of our greatest worries as discerning nail polish buyers.

Our major pet peeve when buying a nail polish, is when it turns out looking like a new colour under a different lighting from the one we tried it under. Say, when it looks like a lovely violet indoors but ends up like a Barney purple outdoors.

Once the colourist had finished making adjustments to the hue, he bottled up the lovely shade for us.

FYI, never be afraid of commenting on the colour, because the Lacquer Bar accurately tailors your polish according to all the information you tell the colourist.

packaged-nail-deck

We even got to name our newly-created colour! We called it “Ripped Jeans” because we’ll always be rebels at heart.

Our ambassador, Diana, also visited the Lacquer Bar! Here’s what she had to say:

Modus Operandi

Lacquer Bar keeps a record of every colour made by any customer, so you can always go back to purchase a colour you previously created.

img_6602-min

To shake things up, the Lacquer Bar comes up with new colours every month. This November, their signature colour is a sumptuous dark plum, heralding the start of the winter season.

According to the colourist, Tiffany Blue and nude hues are the most popular nail polish shades created at the Lacquer Bar. Just so you know, this is where you can lay your hands (and nails) on them!

What is in the Works

Though crème is the only finish available at the moment, other finishes such as shimmer and glitter will be unleashed very soon.

Currently, the Lacquer Bar has an internal catalogue and a database of every colour they’ve ever made. Yes, yours and ours too.

We’re over the moon to know that they’re working on a catalogue for customers to choose colours and derive inspiration from.

Last but not least, Lacquer Bar’s upcoming Collaboration Collection will see them cooperating with local businesses and iconic personalities, so stay tuned!
