A&W And Shake Shack Are Set To Open At Jewel Changi Airport In 2019

a&w singapore

Once again, the East side beats the West, with 2 major fast food chains opening next year in Jewel Changi Airport.

New Fast Food Chains In The East

A&W Singapore

First on the list, is A&W Singapore. Since their announcement of their impending return to Singapore, they’ve remained very quiet with little to no details given.

[caption id="attachment_35877" align="aligncenter" width="547"]a&w singapore Image Credit: A&W Singapore[/caption]

All we knew was that the A&W Singapore outlet will be its flagship outlet and it will be halal-certified, so that’s great news for our Muslim friends.

But now, it has been announced that they will open in Jewel Changi Airport, when it’s completed in 2019!

A&W used to have 5 outlets in Singapore before closing them all in 2003, much to the dismay of my parents.

Since the closure of all Singapore outlets, the only way Singaporeans could get their A&W fix was in Malaysia, where there are over 36 A&W outlets still serving their classic frothy root beer, curly fries, and the Beef Coney hot dog.

[caption id="attachment_35876" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]a&w singapore Image Credit: hip2save[/caption]

I’ve never eaten at A&W before though I do love their root beers, so I’m excited to see why my parents loved them so much.

Shake Shack Singapore

For the millennials and visiting New Yorkers, one of the most famous fast food chains in America, will be opening its first outlet in Singapore.

It’s Shake Shack!

The West Coast in the States has In-N-Out, while the East Coast held their own with Shake Shack.

Shake Shack first opened in New York serving up burgers and hand-spun frozen custard.

[caption id="attachment_35879" align="aligncenter" width="960"]shake shack singapore Image Credit: Shake Shack[/caption]

They’re well known for their simple yet delicious burgers, such as the classic Shackburger® – a single or double cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, topped with their signature Shack Sauce™.

Here’s hoping that their Cheese Fries won’t devolve into the sad state of McDonald’s Cheese Fries.

[caption id="attachment_35880" align="aligncenter" width="640"]shake shack singapore Image Credit: Shake Shack[/caption]

Shake Shack has many outlets across the United States, and each outlet is said to have their very own exclusive menu items, and some Shake Shack outlets even have a breakfast menu!

Which makes me wonder if the Singapore outlet will be getting any exclusive menu items. Will we be getting a Singapore-inspired burger? Or maybe Rendang Fries?

Either way I’m excited to try Shake Shack.

Opening In 2019

These 2 fast food giants are set to open once the construction of Jewel Changi Airport is completed.

Jewel Changi Airport will be linked with Changi Airport Terminal 1, with Terminals 2 and 3 accessible via air-conditioned pedestrian linkways fitted with travelators.

The new Jewel Changi Airport will have 7 storeys and over 280 shops, with a good 30% of the shops being F&B outlets.

This Is Home Truly – S’porean Millennials On Growing Up In Local Neighbourhoods

Singapore

We all grew up in Singapore. Right? Most of us. Well, after considering the concentration of Singaporeans to foreigners in the country, SOME of us grew up in Singapore.

But anyway, my point is we all grew up in a neighbourhood and have lots of memories tied to a certain area in Singapore.

Since my colleagues hail from different parts of Singapore, I decided to do a little investigation to find out where they grew up.

Bedok

Melissa

“I grew up in Bedok North, Fengshan. It was the quieter side of Bedok because the people living there were mainly elderly. Time moved slowly in the area, which made it very homely and cosy. This was before the trend of food bloggers hyping food in neighbourhoods.

[caption id="attachment_35283" align="aligncenter" width="680"]Singapore Image Credit: Singapore Image Credit: Sportify Cities[/caption]

You know how they have the ice cream uncles who would sell ice cream downstairs? Yeah, mine wasn’t an ice cream uncle. It was the kacang putih man.

I moved to Yew Tee in my early Primary years, but to be honest, Marine Parade was more exciting. Don’t put that in.”

Pasir Ris

Farhanah

“I grew up in Pasir Ris all my life. Though I shifted from Pasir Ris East to Pasir Ris West.

But I remember that the area was like a ghost town, because nothing was really developed yet. And the only mall we had at the time was White Sands Shopping Mall, that’s still around today.

[caption id="attachment_35281" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Singapore Image Credit: Wikipedia[/caption]

There was also West Plaza and Elias Mall. Every outing with friends was always at Downtown East. This was before Downtown East expanded into e!Avenue today.

My Sports Days were a little more special because ours wasn’t conducted in-school, rather the school put up a huge tent and held Sports Day at Pasir Ris Park.

Also, I think every Pasir Ris kid will remember that we had our very own theme park in our neighbourhood. Yes, Escape Theme Park was ICONIC.

[caption id="attachment_35280" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]singapore Image Credit: Singapore Image Credit: meme generator[/caption]

I liked that everyone living in Yishun had each other’s backs. The neighbourhood spirit was palpable. Can feel one. There was this sense of unspoken security in the neighbourhood. So actually no need to build wall because we already feel secure.

Even though Northpoint wasn’t much, it was great because it had Toys ‘R’ Us. For a kid, any place that had a Toys ‘R’ Us was a wonderland.

[caption id="attachment_35285" align="aligncenter" width="350"]Singapore Image Credit: Choa Chu Kang

Janielson

“I grew up in Choa Chu Kang. I lived in Teck Whye until I was 3 or 4, but to be honest, the areas are just next to each other.

I remember taking the feeder bus to the MRT, because LRTs weren’t created at the time. There was also Choa Chu Kang Park. I mean, it’s still around today, but back then it was really an empty park with sand playgrounds.

There was a bicycle shop at Choa Chu Kang MRT interchange. My first bike was bought there. Sadly, the shop is gone now.

Lot 1 Shopper’s Mall was the only mall we had in the area. It was quite….limited, in the past. Now they’re trying to expand the MRT so it’s cool.”

Jurong West

Ian

Finally, there’s me. I live in Jurong West, the armpit of Singapore. Left or right? It’s up to your perspective.

I used to hate living in Jurong West. As if Jurong wasn’t already “West” enough, I had to live in Jurong WEST. Everything was far. Can you imagine what my life was like when I had to book in every Sunday night during NS?

The only shopping we had was Jurong Point and it was boring. I mean, it was fine for a while when they decided to open a Toys ‘R’ Us there. But it eventually closed.

[caption id="attachment_35288" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Singapore Image Credit: SRX Property[/caption]

That’s not all, we were near Tuas, so factory smog and weird smells were common. Not to mention the presence of Tengah Air Base, which ensured that the 2 or 3 months leading up to National Day was filled with daily sonic booms of passing aircrafts.

I’m pretty sure my hearing is damaged thanks to the RSAF. Patriotism, I guess.

But to be honest, I grew to love Jurong West.

I love that the neighbourhood is quiet, even in the day. I love that we don’t have a huge amount of traffic passing through. I love that I don’t have to deal with crowd when I take the MRT, unlike Jurong East.

I guess there are benefits to living in the corner of Singapore after all.

The First-Timer’s Guide To Food In Katong That Isn’t Just Laksa

Katong is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Singapore. It’s very high SES living.

My aunt used to live in the area and we’d go to I12 Katong often because that’s the closest thing that Katong has to an actual mall.

Don’t get me wrong, I love I12 Katong. But what I wish I knew earlier was that Katong is packed with interesting cafes and places to explore.

So now that I’m older and wiser (that’s debatable), here’s a guide to Katong that I wish I had known about when I was younger.

Katong For First-Timers

1. Dona Manis

My friends claimed that Dona Manis Cake Shop in Katong Shopping Centre, makes the best Banana Pie in Singapore. I knew I had to try this one for myself to believe it.

Upon reaching, I met the owners of Dona Manis, Mdm Soh Tho Lang and Mr Tan Keng Eng, who were busy prepping their bakes for sale.

[caption id="attachment_34495" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Their bakes are made and sold in this one unit shop. Must-tries include their incredibly light Cream Puff ($3.50 for 5 pieces) and their famous Banana Pie ($2.50 per slice, $25 per pie).

[caption id="attachment_34497" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] The best Cream Puffs I’ve ever had.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_34499" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

Dona Manis is Singapore’s hidden gem and is truly worth a visit.. You won’t find bakery shops like Dona Manis in Singapore anymore.

Dona Manis Cake Shop

2. Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice

Down the corridor from Dona Manis Cake Shop, is Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice.

Every time Katong Shopping Centre is mentioned, I hear about this chicken rice stall. And as someone who shuns chicken rice because bone-in chicken is too much of a hassle for my liking, boneless chicken rice is a God-send.

[caption id="attachment_34511" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burppler Nobelle Liew[/caption]

And that’s not all, their boneless chicken rice comes with complimentary soup and free-flow achar. One thing to note is that the soup they serve is not your generic MSG water – they actually cook proper soups to go with their chicken rice.

After all, good chicken rice should not overlook any aspect of the meal.

If you’re ready to take on long queues and begin the quest of finding a free table, then you’re ready for some Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice.

3. Birds Of Paradise

Located beside other popular eateries along East Coast Road, Birds of Paradise gelato boutique is completely different from any other local ice cream parlour – they offer up botanical inspired gelato flavours.

[caption id="attachment_34512" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burppler Ziyue Guo[/caption]
Made on site, their floral infused ice cream flavours are crafted with all natural ingredients, so there are no artificial flavours or colourings at this gelato boutique!
Serving between 9 and 12 gelato flavours, the most popular flavours at this Kallang ice cream spot is its Spiced Pear (which has a slight cinnamon aftertaste due to the infusion of star anise), Strawberry Basil (which has an refreshing taste unlike artificial tasting ice creams which can taste a tad heavy) and White Chrysanthemum (which has cacao nibs scattered in every scoop)!
If you’re looking for a sweet and unique treat that isn’t overwhelming, Birds of Paradise is the place to be!
Definitely in a league of its own, this gelato boutique is on our list of MUST TRY places!

4. An Acai Affair

The latest kid on the block is none other than An Acai Affair!

Located in the east, An Acai Affair is set to revoluntionalise the #eatclean trend with their delectable acai bowls and fruit smoothies.

[caption id="attachment_22439" align="aligncenter" width="1072"] Image Credit: Credit: facebook.com[/caption]

Their Signature Acai Bowl – Tropical Coconut Bowl no doubt stands out from the other specialty stores with the use of an actual coconut husk as a bowl. Despite the relatively small portion due to the coconut husk, expect generous toppings of fruits the likes of pineapple, kiwi, blueberry as well as granola and even wolfberries.

An Acai Affair
Address: 101 East Coast Road, Singapore 428796
Opening hours: Sun to Thu 12nn – 10pm; Fri to Sat 12nn – 11.30pm

5. Ampang Niang Tou Foo

Yong Tau Foo is one of my favourite comfort foods. It’s customisable because you get to choose the ingredients you want, which are then blanched in broth and served with rice or noodles.

At Ampang Niang Tou Foo, they serve Ampang-style Yong Tau Foo.

[caption id="attachment_34518" align="aligncenter" width="645"] Image Credit: Burppler NUS FAT Club[/caption]

The difference is that they stuff their usual Yong Tau Foo ingredients such as chillis and fried beancurd with minced meat paste instead of fish paste. It gives the ingredients a lot more bite than fish paste does.

That’s not all, the Yong Tau Foo is served in a light broth with soya beans and dried anchovies.

Don’t forget their chilli sauce to add a little “oomph” to the Yong Tau Foo.

Ampang Niang Tou Foo
Address: 225A East Coast Road, Singapore 428922
Opening Hours: Sat – Tue & Thu: 11am – 8.30pm, Wed & Fri: Closed

6. Chin Mee Chin Confectionery

This place has been a long-running favourite among the locals. Located along East Coast Road, this nostalgic coffee shop is a nice change to modern joints.

[caption id="attachment_34519" align="aligncenter" width="1116"] Image Credit: @_qyun[/caption]

Known for it’s decor typical of 1950s Singapore, with retro marble top tables, floor tiles, and ceiling fans. It’s also known for their traditional kaya toasts.

Instead of the kaya toast bread you’d typically see, their Kaya Toast is served in a hamburger-type bun and slathered with their homemade kaya and a slice of butter.

[caption id="attachment_34520" align="aligncenter" width="1290"] Image Credit: Burppler foodslut_[/caption]

These buns are made in house and toasted till they are slightly burnt for that nice “char” taste. This place can get pretty busy so try and avoid peak hours if you’re looking at dining in.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionary
Address: 204 East Coast Road, Singapore 428903
Opening Hours: Tues – Sun: 8.30 am – 4pm, Closed on Mondays
Contact No.: 6345 0419

7. Beriwell

A not-so-little space at Katong, along the dessert-filled East Coast Road that houses An Acai Affair and Birds Of Paradise, Beriwell makes you feel like you’re chilling at a shack on the beach.

[caption id="attachment_31050" align="aligncenter" width="2679"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]

Easy to spot with its beachy murals, tropical vibes, flamingo printed seats, and rattan chairs, this casual joint will give you plenty of fodder for the ‘gram.

The brainchild of friends Galissa, Dash, and Anand, this acai joint was born out of a love for healthy living and acai.

The trio created the Superswirl, a soft serve that comes in 2 flavours: acai (‘Acai‘) and coconut (‘Coco Majik‘). You can even have the two flavours swirled into one (‘The Twist‘)!

[caption id="attachment_31053" align="aligncenter" width="2543"] (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]

Dairy free, gluten free, and vegan-friendly, the Superswirl is tagged at $6.90 for a small cup, where you can pick 2 toppings out of the day’s selection of fruits and crunch, and $9.90 for a large serving, where you get to choose 4 toppings.

The acai soft serve is a creamier, smoother version of the refreshing acai bowls we all love – perfect for a warm day in the East.

While the menu is still pretty trim at the moment, the store has plenty more up it’s sleeve. We hear there will be more sauces, more toppings, and another smoothie being added to the mix!

This super cute hangout is Instagrammable, chill, and serves up some healthy AND delicious stuff. If you live in the East, make sure to pop by for a refreshing treat in this little tropical retreat.

Established in 1979, this household name is known for their lemak sambal chilli and crispy fried chicken wings and some say the “Best Nasi Lemak in Singapore”.

There are also plenty of dishes for you to choose from.

It’s been a supper spot for many Singaporeans so if you’re coming here for supper, be prepared to queue.

There’s Finally A Halal Boat Noodle Place In S’pore – And It’s Only $1.90 A Bowl

Upon hearing the news of this newly opened Thai boat noodles place in Singapore, I knew I had to go down to experience it for myself. My first thought was, “About god damn time we get halal boat noodles in Singapore.”

The boat noodles craze has sent plenty of Singaporeans including me going over the causeway JUST for Thai boat noodles, so imagine how excited I was when I found out there’s finally a halal boat noodle place in Singapore.

So I packed my bags, braved the weather and decided that today will be the day I finally get to indulge in this savoury delight right here in Singapore.

Cheap Cheap, Good Good

I drummed my fingers on the handrail of the escalator as it slowly descended into the basement of I12 Katong, perhaps one of my favourite malls in Singapore.

It was honestly a very small shop but I had real high expectations for the food served at Hat Yai Noodle Cafe.

[caption id="attachment_34466" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Hat Yai Noodle Bar[/caption]

Just like any other typical Thai boat noodles shop, the noodles are served in mini bowls ($1.90 each) that can be gobbled up in about 2 large mouthfuls. Each bowl comes with a slice of beef, meatball, leafy vegetables, beansprouts, spring onions and noodles of your choice (of course we got the traditional glass noodle).

[caption id="attachment_34467" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Small Thai Boat Noodles ($1.90)[/caption]

I was not that blown away by their broth but honestly, for $1.90 per bowl, I’m not complaining. It’s definitely perfect if you’ve got a small appetite and looking for something light.

Ordering 3 bowls is definitely not a smart move if you’re hungry. If you’re looking for a proper heavy meal, they do have a bigger version which is the Braised Beef Tendon ($8.50). You can choose from 3 different proteins – beef, chicken, duck.

[caption id="attachment_34469" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Braised Beef Tendon Noodle ($8.50)[/caption]

You can also choose to have it dry with soup on the side if that’s how you roll.

I was looking forward to trying out their side dishes like the Ping Gai which is basically Thai style BBQ chicken and beef sticks. Unfortunately, they weren’t selling any side dishes today.

So I settled for their Chicken/Beef Meatball Skewers ($1.90 per skewer) instead. Each stick comes with 4 beef/chicken balls. Was not too sure what they meant by “Thai Special Sauce” but ours came drenched in Thai Sweet Chilli sauce that my mom buys from Giant Supermarket.

[caption id="attachment_34471" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Chicken/Beef Meatball Skewers ($1.90 per skewer)[/caption]

I prayed real hard, “@ God, the least you can do is give me decent Thai Milk Tea. I headed all the way to Katong for Thai food. Please don’t disappoint.”

God heard my prayers and decided not to disappoint me any further. It tasted exactly like the famous Thai milk tea brand your friend would buy for you from Bangkok.

[caption id="attachment_34473" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Thai Ice Milk Tea ($2.80)[/caption]

It helped wash all my sadness and problems away.

My total meal totalled up to $26, inclusive of a 10% service charge. I left Hat Yai Noodle Cafe feeling slightly disappointed but at least I’m pleased with the fact that there’s halal boat noodles in Singapore if I’m ever craving for it.

In the mean time, I’m gonna fix myself a cup of instant tom yum noodles and daydream of a getaway to Thailand.

3. The Royals Steakhouse

The Royals franchise started out as a dessert and cake shop along East Coast Road. As business grew, they continued to open restaurants all over the city.

The Royals Steakhouse started business in 2015, in a little shophouse unit along Jalan Pisang serving premium quality Halal steaks from Australia and New Zealand.

In fact, the steak here is so good that they separate the sauces from the meat so you can truly taste the original flavour of the steak.

The Tomahawk steak seems like something from The Flintstones, but this huge slab of steak is perfect for sharing with family.

Priced at $9.50 per 100g, the Tomahawk steak typically weighs between 1.3kg – 1.5kg. The price is such a steal however for a limited time only as it is an introductory offer for their Tomahawk.

[caption id="attachment_33831" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: The Royals Steakhouse Facebook[/caption]

Just look at the amount of meat!

The ribeye is lightly dabbed with salt before grilling. The exterior is nicely charred while retaining a juicy red centre.

Think Out Of The Toastbox – Must-Try Kaya Toasts In Singapore You Will Love Regardless Of SES

Kaya toast is what I’d describe as the “strawberry jam with scones” of England. It’s a classic Singaporean breakfast that is best enjoyed with kopi gao and two soft-boiled eggs.

Skip your usual Ya Kun Kaya and Toast Box and go for the more traditional coffee shops that will not disappoint.

The Classic Singaporean Breakfast

1. Chin Mee Chin Confectionary

This place has been a long-running favourite among the locals. Located along East Coast Road, this nostalgic coffee shop is a nice change to modern joints.

[caption id="attachment_33584" align="aligncenter" width="1116"] Image Credit: @_qyun[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_33585" align="aligncenter" width="1290"] Image Credit: Burpple User foodslut_[/caption]

These buns are made in house and toasted till they are slightly burnt for that nice “char” taste. This place can get pretty busy so try and avoid peak hours if you’re looking at dining in.

The kaya toast is generously slathered with their homemade kaya which is available for sale as well!

Singapore’s First Vegan Ice Cream Joint Takes The ‘Guilty’ Away From Pleasure

If you’re like me and you ate your entire body weight in steamboat and treats over the Chinese New Year break, it’s time to get back in shape!

But who says you can’t enjoy a little sweat treat every now and then.

Over at Brownice, they serve up one of the best vegan ice creams in Singapore and best part, it’s completely guilt-free!

You Can Have Your Ice Cream And Eat It Too

Being vegan or lactose-intolerant, you probably know how frustrating it is to be restricted from ice creams.

Fret not, Brownice serves vegan-friendly ice cream that uses brown rice as a substitute. Yes, you read that right. No dairy or eggs in this one!

[caption id="attachment_33210" align="aligncenter" width="2000"] Image Credit: Brownice Ice Cream Facebook[/caption]

If you’re expecting a rich gelato texture, unfortunately Brownice’s ice cream is less creamy and more icy (think of a cross between sorbet and ice cream).

While it is texturally lighter on the palate, it certainly does not lack flavour.

Looking for something light and refreshing for those hot sunny days? Their fruit based flavours such as the Sunny Strawberry Fields (from $3.50 per scoop) will be the choice to go for.

[caption id="attachment_33213" align="alignnone" width="1312"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]

For creamier flavours, you should definitely try out their Black Sesame, Gila Gula Melaka and The Perfect Matcha.

Even better, treat yourself and go for the Waffle-licious Ice Cream ($8 with a scoop of ice cream).

[caption id="attachment_33214" align="alignnone" width="1304"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]

Brownice prides in the fact that their ice cream contains less than 3% fat and boasts a calorie count of 80-140kcal per scoop. How’s that for your waistline?

Their outlet at East Coast Road serves a variety of Italian fare as well. Brownice is here to prove that Italian food can still be enjoyed if you’re vegan.

They serve one of the best vegan friendly pizzas ($14-$19) I’ve tried to date. You can barely taste the difference from your traditional Italian pizza.

[caption id="attachment_33215" align="alignnone" width="1308"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]

The pastas ($10-$18) have great flavours too although most are tomato-based. Their Lasagna ($17), which features layers of diced eggplants and tofu in a thick and creamy tomato ragu sauce, is a crowd favourite!

[caption id="attachment_33216" align="alignnone" width="1308"] Image Credit: @brownice_sg[/caption]

Brownice has got our stamp of approval if you’re looking at vegan-friendly options. We’re surprised this place hasn’t opened all over Singapore yet.

Dear Brownice owners, if you’re reading this, please open 30 more branches all over Singapore. We’re more than happy to throw all our angbao money just for your ice cream!

There’s also the newly-opened Winestone lounge which offers both indoor and outdoor terrace seating. With its chill vibes, Winestone is a great place to unwind with friends over shared plates of raclette and freshly bakes pizzas and bread.

We absolutely love their bathrooms and can imagine spending hours relaxing in their luxurious bath tub.

For a 5-star retreat, their price tag isn’t too hefty, with prices starting from $230 a night. With plenty of greenery and marble, we think plenty of amazing photos will come out of your stay here.

A huge plus point when you stay here is that you will have no lack of options when it comes to nightlife. With Clarke Quay just a 5-minute drive away and Orchard Road within walking distance, you won’t have to worry about being bored and having nothing to do after dark.

Nestled in the Kranji Countryside, the three villas here are spread across over two hectares of land. Each villa is decorated with its own distinct style: English (Begonia Villa), The Orient (Camellia Villa) and Contemporary (Daffodil Villa). The villas here are designed after the colonial houses of yore, and come with their own walk-up staircase!

With each villa leading straight to the pool, you’ll surely be tempted to take a dip, especially in sunny Singapore. Other amenities here include a tennis court, amphitheater, and billiards table, so get off your devices and enjoy the beautiful outdoors while you’re here!
