Former Japanese Idol-Turned-Solo Artist Estelle Fly Debuts Her First English Single “Blue”

Singapore has had rather prominent home-grown musicians. From JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun to The Sam Willows and Sam Rui, the local music scene has improved by leaps and bounds.

An up-and-coming musician is Estelle Fly, a Singapore-based artist who used to be part of the Japanese pop idol scene. In 2010, she was part of girl group MYnT and Japanese anime song idol group Sea*A for 3 years, from 2011 to 2013.

[caption id="attachment_33052" align="aligncenter" width="4982"] Image Credit: Estelle Fly[/caption]

Since the disbandment of Sea*A, Estelle Fly has gone solo as a Youtuber and musician, creating and building her own sound – one that she describes as a mix between R&B and Pop.

Her Solo English Debut

On 31 January 2018, Estelle Fly debuted her first English single, “Blue“.

The single, produced by Osaka-based producer Soleil Soleil and Jason Gelchen of Singapore’s Homeground Studios, is a groovy R&B pop track about a girl’s first encounter with unrequited love.

While the song isn’t immediately catchy, it grows on you. We found ourselves humming to the tune of “Blue” in the most random moments and now it’s on loop.

The song is now available on Spotify.

7. Summer Hill

Summer Hill is the newest restaurant to pop up in Sunset Way, serving up affordable French cuisine without GST and service charge.

This cosy bistro serves up simple French fare that is oh-so-simple, yet oh-so-good. Dishes on their Special board as well as sides are rotated weekly so your meal there is always different and exciting.

Must-tries include their Poulet Roti ($23 for half, $45 for whole), the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar ($25), Croque Monsieur ($17.50), and the Orange & Rosemary-Scented Olive Oil Cake With Cream ($3).

The Poulet Roti uses hormone and antibiotic-free chicken that has been marinated with herb butter before it’s roasted to perfection. The result is roast chicken that is juicy yet still retains its skin’s crispiness.

[caption id="attachment_33024" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Image Credit: Burpple User Muriel A[/caption]

If you’re not a fan of chicken, then the Mustard & Sage Pork Collar is the main dish for you. Tangy, tender, and satisfying. The mustard and sage sauce provides a contrast of flavours, cutting through the heaviness of the tender pork so that you won’t feel jelak.

[caption id="attachment_33025" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Image Credit: Burpple User Muriel A[/caption]

The Croque Monsieur is basically a levelled-up ham and cheese sandwich. Ham, Swiss cheese, bechamel sauce, and dijon mustard sandwiched between 2 thick slices of grilled sourdough bread.

Sounds like heaven to us. That’s not all, more Swiss cheese is garnished on the top of the sandwich for more cheesy goodness.

[caption id="attachment_33026" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Image Credit: Burpple User Xing Wei Chua[/caption]

If you’re a fan of French cuisine, or just appreciate comfort food, then you need to drop by Summer Hill next.

8. OH MY MANGO Dessert Bar

Hidden away in the suburbs of Jurong West, is OH MY MANGO dessert bar.

This unassuming dessert bar serves up various mango-flavoured food, and one of those is a mean Mango Shibuya Toast ($10.90).

[caption id="attachment_33029" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Image Credit: OH MY MANGO Dessert Bar Facebook[/caption]

Soft and fluffy on the inside, while toasted and crispy on the outside, the shibuya toast is topped with mango ice cream, diced mango, almond flakes, drizzled generously with mango sauce, and served with a dollop of whipped cream.

This is basically a mango overload but not in a bad way. If you’re a big fan of mango, you have to try this.

OH MY MANGO dessert bar also has a rather extensive menu of mango-flavoured drinks.

[caption id="attachment_33030" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: OH MY MANGO Dessert Bar Facebook[/caption]

A hot favourite among customers is the Matcha Mango Latte ($5.90). A bottom layer of mango bits, followed by a layer of milk, topped off with a layer of matcha.

[caption id="attachment_33031" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Image Credit: Burpple User Miss Ha[/caption]

This tri-coloured creation might seem like a weird flavour combination, but the slight bitterness of matcha cuts through the sweetness and sometimes too jelak taste of the mango and milk, resulting in a rather interesting flavour.

OH MY MANGO dessert bar is constantly adding new desserts and drinks to their menu, so keep checking their Facebook page to stay up to date!

10 Places To Get Affordable Blooms For Bae This Valentine’s Day – Starting From $18

As January nears its end, it means one thing: Valentine’s Day is round the corner.

A day where we celebrate love and show our partners how much they mean to us, on this special day, no gesture is too big or too small.

If you’re looking to give your partner some flowers, but don’t want to splash out over a hundred dollars on blooms, you’ll be glad to know that affordable options are not that hard to find these days.

Here are 10 florists that sell beautiful bouquets – fresh and dried – at wallet-friendly prices, so you can show your affection without burning a huge hole in your pocket.

After all, it’s the thought and not the amount of money you spend that counts.

1. The Bloom Room

A floral shop that typically sells bouquets that are on the pricier side, The Bloom Room is showing us all some love this Valentine’s Day by selling petite floral bouquets, so we can all experience the joy of giving and receiving flowers on the day of love.

[caption id="attachment_32962" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @bloomroomsg[/caption]

Bouquets start at $18 for a simple rose and wax flower combo, and other affordable options include a dried medicinal bottle arrangement ($28) and a dried lavender bouquet ($30).

Do take note that delivery is not free, so drop by to pick up your flowers, and save that extra money for something else!

2. The Enchanted Tree

If you haven’t heard of The Enchanted Tree, get acquainted – especially if your partner loves receiving flowers.

[caption id="attachment_32963" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @theenchantedtreesg[/caption]

A company that believes in making flowers affordable anywhere in Singapore, their hand bouquets are priced at $30 each. Yes, that’s a $30 flat fee that includes delivery.

These $30 bouquets – otherwise known as ‘Daily Picks‘ – differ on a day to day* basis, so what you get really depends on what they’re selling on that particular day.

3. Windflower Florist

Another go-to florist for affordable bouquets is Windflower Florist. They’re the ones responsible for the dried flower vending machines you may have seen around Singapore!

[caption id="attachment_32952" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @windflowerflorist[/caption]

If your partner loves the look of dried flowers, you should definitely give Windflower Florist’s catalog a browse. Dried lavender bouquets start at $33, while $48 can get you pink, blue, purple bouquets and more with some whimsical cotton flowers.

Fresh flower bouquets here are similarly wallet-friendly, with a good selection of affordable options starting at $43.

4. The Bloom Box

For a more unique Valentine’s Day gift, why not get blooms in a box?

[caption id="attachment_32958" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @thebloombox[/caption]

The Bloom Box rejects the notion that flower bouquets need to be expensive, reserved for special occasions, and come wrapped in coloured paper. As such, they’ve created floral boxes, and they offer only one type of box a day at $35 nett (inclusive of delivery).

Designed with a handle, these floral boxes are definitely a lot handier than the traditional hand bouquet. Their Valentine’s Day designs are out, and are available for pre-order.

These quirky bouquets are created by Adorninglory, a felt and fresh floral artist. For Valentine’s Day this year, Adorninglory will be selling 4 types of felt bouquets, as well as 1 dried flower bouquet.

Prices start at $39 for a felt floral bouquet, and their hand-calligraphed card + bouquet set is tagged at $55.

Their Valentine’s Day collection is also very affordable, starting at $55 for a simple bouquet of baby’s breath, cotton flowers and roses.

A Care Bear-Themed Cafe Is Springing Up In S’pore And It Will Awaken Your Inner Child

Singapore has seen so many character cafes pop up in the recent years, it’s almost as if it’s an elaborate scheme to get us to keep throwing money in pursuit of that perfect Instagram shot.

Of course, we all know this. But that doesn’t stop us from visiting these character cafes when they pop up in succession.

Once again, Kumoya has partnered with Little Miss Bento and American Greeting to bring us Care Bears x Kumoya, a Care Bears-themed cafe.

Step Into Care-a-lot, Home Of The Care Bears

From 1 February to 31 March 2018, Kumoya will be transformed into Care-a-lot, the home of the Care Bears.

[caption id="attachment_32951" align="aligncenter" width="987"] Image Credit: Kumoya[/caption]

The cafe will be completely redecorated with the Care Bears. While it doesn’t exactly resemble Care-a-lot, this will do.

As with all past iterations of character cafes, what everyone is looking forward to is the themed food, and the Care Bears don’t intend to lose out to the Sanrio characters.

Food Prepared With Care

First up, we have The Seafood Chowder you’ll Love-a-lot ($28.90).

[caption id="attachment_32946" align="aligncenter" width="1772"] The Seafood Chowder You’ll Love-a-lot ($28.90)[/caption]

This seafood-loaded chunky stew comes with a generous amount of shrimp and squid, as well as chunks of carrot and broccoli, served with a bed of beetroot-stained rice shaped like Love-a-lot bear.

For the pasta lovers, there’s the Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90) which is a classic Pomodoro spaghetti with shitake mushrooms, cherry tomato confit, and parmesan cheese.

[caption id="attachment_32955" align="aligncenter" width="1772"] Kumoya’s Star Attraction ($18.90)[/caption]

A juicy Japanese katsu chicken slathered generously with teriyaki sauce is sandwiched between soft burger buns, topped with a sunny-side up and cheddar cheese, served with a garden salad, crisp fries and mushroom soup.

While the mains look adorable and Instagram-worthy, the sides don’t disappoint either.

Served in a limited-edition snack holder, choose from the Truffle Fries ($11.90), Salted Egg Yolk Fries ($11.90), Chicken And Corn Sticks With Nacho Cheese ($12.90) and Karaage Chicken With Shoyu Glaze ($12.90).

Salted egg lovers will love the Salted Egg Yolk Fries, which comes sprinkled with salted egg cereal crunch and salted egg mayo dip. There’s no such thing as too much salted egg.

The Definitive Guide To Not Appearing ‘Suaku’ At An Art Festival

If you’re clueless as to how you should behave appropriately at an Art festival or exhibition, you’re certainly not alone.

It’s absolutely fine if you do not know how to act or what to say at certain art installations because we’ve come up with some fool proof steps that you can apply at any art festival or exhibition.

1. Nod (But Not Too Fervently) At Every Installation

Sometimes, the artist statements can be too cheem for the layman, and you’re just not able to fully comprehend what the artist is trying to convey.

But you don’t want people to know that you don’t know. So you pretend and you nod.

One of the most stunning installations is the Flowers And People – Dark interactive installation at National Gallery Singapore. The installation changes with every movement that visitors make. Each visual you see can never be replicated and is completely unique

2. Do The “Steve Jobs”

No, not invent the iPhone. You know that thing he does where he rubs his thumb and index finger in an inquisitive fashion?

Lai we show you.

This technique will be applicable in The House Is Crumbling sculptural installation, where visitors can interact and create different structures using the moveable pillows.

3. Use Words Like “Nuance” A Lot

To look like you know your stuff, you have to speak in their language.

[caption id="attachment_32876" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

For optimal effect, do this in an art exhibition where everything is quieter, like the Colours Of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay exhibition at the Gallery.

This weekend and next, National Gallery Singapore’s opening hours will be extended and admission is FREE for all exhibitions including Century of Light which features Colours of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, and Between Worlds: Raden Saleh and Juan Luna.

4. Bring Up And Mention Any Art Experience You’ve Had

The good thing about receiving your education in Singapore, is that Arts & Crafts is a subject in Primary school. And for most people, that is probably the only time they did anything remotely “artsy”.

So use it. “Wah I remember when I was doing my graduation project and I had to create something similar to this. It was damn tough. Legit.”

If any of your friends decide to call your bluff, ignore them and move on. Life’s too short.

An interesting installation is the A Stitch In Time exhibit at the National Gallery Singapore, where members of the public stitched and sewed their names, pictures, poems, and personal keepsakes on to a large piece of white cloth.

5. Bring A Friend Who Can “Art” And Let Them Do The Talking

If you don’t know what to say, say nothing. Let your friend do the talking. If you don’t understand something, get them to explain.

[caption id="attachment_32878" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

But then again, you’re at an art festival, why are you “studying” the pieces?

Go enjoy yourself!

Disconnect and immerse yourself in Walk, Walk, Walk: Search, Deviate, Reunite exhibit.

It’s a labyrinth with virtual projections of different landscapes such as a bamboo forest, wheat field and cherry blossom forest, as well as strangely catchy music that we cannot get enough of.

Light To Night Festival 2018: Colour Sensations is on from 19 January to 28 January 2018 at National Gallery Singapore and around the Civic District.

Mai tu liao, bring your friends and family down to the Light To Night Festival for a blinding good time!

If you’ve ever been to Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market, then you’d know the struggle of having to contend with the limited options we have in our supermarkets.

Soon, Singaporeans won’t have to travel all the way to Australia for the farmers market experience. That’s right, Johor will be getting their own version of the Queen Victoria Market.
