A Poke Theory Is S’pore’s First Halal Poke Place – Customise Your Bowls From $9.90
If there’s one thing I’ve noticed growing up as a Muslim in Singapore would be the lack of healthy Halal-certified food options.
Most salad bars and poke bowl restaurants in Singapore aren’t halal so imagine my happiness when A Poke Theory finally announced that they finally got their Halal-certification.
Of course I had to head down and try it out for myself and finally understand what the hype surrounding poke bowls are all about.
Life’s Too Short To Eat Bad Food
If you have no idea what poke bowls are, it’s a traditional Hawaiian “salad” filled with rice, covered with chunks of raw, marinated fish (usually tuna) and topped with lots of vegetables and umami-packed sauces.
What you get is an Instagram-worthy poke bowl that looks good and tastes amazing as well!
[caption id="attachment_35757" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]In Hawaii, it’s often found everywhere, from gas stations to roadside stands. Diners get to pick out the kind of poke they want and get it to go in a Styrofoam container.
Stepping into A Poke Theory instantly brought me back to the time I first had my poke bowl in LA. It’s modern, minimal and even the music selection was a 10 out of 10. Definitely a great place to gather your friends or family for a healthy meal.
[caption id="attachment_35754" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]A Poke Theory has been around since July 2016 and it only made sense for them to move towards feeding a community even larger than what they they were already catering for.
There were several major changes that the owner, Joey Lee, and his head chef had to make to the recipes in order to maintain the same taste and quality. They spent over 3 weeks making changes to the soy sauce which was a major part of the marinade as well as coming up with their own furikake which took over a month and half.
[caption id="attachment_35758" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]Despite all the delays and challenges that they faced, they managed to re-engineer their prized marinades with Halal-certified ingredients to achieve the same taste as their original non-Halal marinades.
I spoke to one of the founders of A Poke Theory, Joey Lee, who is the mastermind behind all the recipe creations.
“Normally if you already have a winning formula, you wouldn’t want to change it. However, if we can make the Halal ingredients taste the same or even improve the recipe, it pushes us out of our comfort zone.”
In fact, they taste almost similar that regular customers could barely see the change in the recipes as adaptations to include Halal ingredients have already been incorporated to gradually over the last 4 months so as to keep quality control at its peak.
[caption id="attachment_35763" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]Ordering a Poke bowl here is simple. All you have to do is pick a size ($9.90, $12.90, $15.90), your choice of base, poke (up to 2 options), free toppings and additional premium toppings that are freshly made daily.
If it’s your first time ordering a poke bowl, we highly recommend you getting the Lemon Herb Quinoa which pairs really well with the poke. It’s definitely a lighter option as compared to the signature sushi rice.
[caption id="attachment_35766" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]Be adventurous and get both the tuna and salmon! Their two best-selling poke would be the Spicy Garlic Sesame Tuna and Avocado Miso Salmon. The Avocado Miso sauce is a hit at A Poke Theory as the sauce is thick and creamy from the combination of olive oil, fresh spinach leaves and greek yoghurt. No mayo is included which makes it completely healthy and guilt-free!
They’ll be releasing new seasonal special flavours as well. Diners can look forward to their Romesco Salmon soon which is a bold step away from their typical Asian flavours.
[caption id="attachment_35768" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]With the smallest bowl priced at $9.90, it’s definitely an affordable and healthy lunch option especially if you’re working around the CBD areas.
If you’re looking for a healthy sweet treat, A Poke Theory makes gorgeous looking Superfood smoothie bowls which makes for a great post-gym fuel or after-work tête-à-têtes.
[caption id="attachment_35769" align="aligncenter" width="1078"] Image Credit: @apoketheory[/caption]Swap your morning coffee for their cold pressed juices which ais packed with lotsa wholesome goodness, all bottled and ready to go for you. Their juice recipes are improvised from whatever leftover ingredients which is in line with A Poke Theory’s aim to minimise food wastage and making the most out of anything salvageable.
[caption id="attachment_35761" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]For those can’t get enough of their premium toppings especially their highly raved ‘Spiced Roasted Cashews’, you can get them in to-go snack packs for $6 each.

These Poké Bowls Are Worth Poking Your Forks And Spoons Into!
Joining the latest #eatclean craze within our little red dot are Poké bowls. With no relation to Pokémon, Poké bowls (pronounced ‘poh-kay’) actually originated from tropical Hawaii.
If you are not sure what a Poké bowl consists of, it is essentially a Hawaiian-inspired Chirashi don – slices of raw fish such as tuna or salmon with your choice of rice or greens, topped with sesame seeds, seaweed or other topping variations.
With the slew of Poké bowls popping up around Singapore, it is only a matter of time before we succumb to this latest healthy food trend. If you have finally decided to jump on the bandwagon, here are some Poké bowls in Singapore worth poking your forks and spoons into!

So, believe us when we say this is good stuff. They believe that people deserve to feed themselves better, and with fuss-free nutrition. No diets, no counting calories, just good and wholesome food so you can eat clean.
[caption id="attachment_17213" align="alignnone" width="960"] Credit: Burpple[/caption]As interesting as these two words – Poke Bowl – might sound, it is essentially a raw fish salad.
At A Poke Theory, they serve fresh, marinated cuts of salmon and tuna with a base of either their Signature Sushi Rice, brown rice, lemon herb quinoa or romaine lettuce. It is then topped off with a mix of toppings such as avocadoes, roasted cashews and furikake.
Finally, a salad that isn’t boring.
A Poke Theory You can see from the generous amount of food in each bento – they are sure to fill you up until your next meal. Their Chicken Breast Sausage & Protein Waffle Toast that comes with oozing melted mozzarella cheese from their brunch menu is only 367 calories. What are you waiting for? Lean Bento With 5 outlets in the CBD area, they are the perfect choice for those who’d like to eat clean and good food. What got our attention though, is their offering of soba salads with interesting Japanese inspired dressings like yuzu, teriyaki and sesame. Here’s a meatless soba salad with sesame sauce and wakame. So light and refreshing, your body will thank you for it! WHEAT Baumkuchen A little cafe located in the Telok Ayer district, Sarnies serves up some pretty mean sandwiches. But what really caught our attention was the Cocowhip. It’s like a froyo, but not so much like one. Made with only coconut water, vegan stabilisers and organic bio-fermented coconut, this frozen dessert is vegan, gluten and dairy free. Try their Cocowhip Breakfast Bowl. It’s creamy and delicious Cocowhip topped with a fruit salad and a medley of nuts & gogi berries. We won’t say no to healthy and delicious “ice-cream”. Sarnies Each of these bowls have been concocted with goodness in mind so you can indulge in them without feeling guilty. Sprout offers a range of salads, incorporating flavours from different cuisines. The Korean Chicken Bowl consists of chicken breast meat that was marinated with kimchi and accompanied with shiitake mushrooms, carrots, Japanese cucumber, and a soft boiled egg. Sprout Looking for a quick fix with quality, wholesome food during your lunch hour? Grain Traders is the place. Ken Yuktasevi, one of the founders of Grain Traders, wanted a space for people to be able to spend that time in the best way possible by feeding themselves right, catching up with people, and simply taking a break from the daily grind. They can do all these at Grain Traders, where they will feel that they’re being taken care of. You can build-your-own-bowl at Grain Traders! Choose from a selection of grains – brown rice, bulgur wheat, soba noodles, to name a few, and top it up from there. Select your veggies, proteins and sauces. There, your bowl of wholesome goodness. Grain Traders It has only been a few months since the official opening of A Poke Theory but they have successfully spinned a Poke Bowl craze. And this ain’t stoping them. Their sister concept, Alter Ego, will be opening its doors to the public on 5th November 2016. Alter Ego is the second food concept launched by the Tandem Collective group. Wanting to reignite the F&B space amongst locals, they have chosen to venture into the Esplanade as it is a familiar space to our local musicians and creatives. Just like A Poke Theory, Alter Ego will not compromise on their menu. Their ever famous healthy and delectable poke and smoothie bowls are still the primary focus during the daytime. But as night falls, you get to choose from a delightful selection of entry-level craft beers and diet-ruining bar grubs. Try the Loaded Taters if you are more adventurous. Crisp tater tots are doused mercilessly in spicy jalapeño cheese sauce, maple-glazed bacon & sour cream. Different layers of flavours bursting in your mouth all at once is definitely going to give your taste buds a treat. Oh yum. Their Buffalo Wings look tantalising too. Twice-baked and tossed in their spicy and tangy buffalo sauce, the wings look oh so good! We can’t wait to get our hands dirty. Decked out in raw industrial fittings of oxidised iron, copper, cement and organic teak, Alter Ego is set to be an open and creative space in the daylight. But as the sun sets, it transforms into a darker, dangerously inviting place with scrawling secret messages unveiling themselves on their dimming wall murals. Here is a big cheer to a new creative and beautiful space perfect for long awaited catch-up sessions with our mates! New kids on the block, A Poke Theory, strongly believes that healthy food does not equate to tasteless food. Sibling duo, Joey and Vannessa, have always dreamt of starting a business together. Therefore, as foodies themselves, opening a fast food-first concept was undoubtedly the perfect plan. Situated right in the heart of the CBD, A Poke Theory was born out of Joey’s love for roasts, and Vannessa’s passion for wholesome grub. Take a peek into their personal Instagram accounts. You’ll notice the stark difference in food preferences. Joey (@buttergoggles) lives for meat. While Vannessa (@feedvannessa) swears by fruits, vegetables, and smoothie bowls. However, everything converges nicely to create food that is healthy without compromising on taste or ingredients. Poke bowls originated in Hawaii. They were once served as snacks for the fishermen who seasoned and ate the cut-offs from their catch while out at sea. Poke bowls can be closely compared to the Japanese chirashi don, where fresh sashimi is served on top of a bed of sushi rice. At A Poke Theory, the choice is yours. For the love of avocado, I very predictably picked the avocado miso salmon. My additional toppings? You guessed it – more avocado and cashews! Two words describe my poke bowl: absolutely divine. Credits don’t go to my impeccable choice in toppings. Rather, it’s the thoughtful concoction of flavours that were infused into each ingredient. Of course, the freshness of the seafood made a big difference too! The buttery salmon blended perfectly with the creaminess of the avocado dressing. The accompanying fruits and vegetables were refreshing, and cleansed the palette well. Even though my poke bowl was on the house (Joey is an old friend from Ngee Ann Poly!), it’s safe to say that the premium ingredients are well-worth every penny. The premium ingredients all had a little twist to their flavours – a dash of spice or a zest of tang. For someone whose record is six bowls of rice in one sitting, I have to add that I really enjoyed A Poke Theory’s signature sushi rice. Infused with garlic, chillis and seasoned with sushi vinegar, the rice is sticky. The taste of vinegar, though not as strong as your typical sushi rice – which was exactly to my liking, but otherwise highly subjective. Remember to leave room for dessert – guilt-free superfood smoothie bowls. I was spoilt for choice. Part of me wanted a refreshing smoothie bowl as I was stuffed from my poke bowl. The other part knew that I had to get either the Cacaoholic or the Maca Nutter. That’s because I usually only eat dairy-based flavours for dessert Cacaoholic did not disappoint. The texture was akin to ice cream without the bite, or a popsicle without the structure. I especially enjoyed the raw cacao nibs that added a nice crunch to the smoothie bowl. Just had to buy a bag of roasted honey and spice cashews for the road because they were way too addictive! All in all, A Poke Theory is a great concept. It’ll suit anyone, from the busy professionals who are looking for a delicious, easy-to-eat meal to health-conscious individuals in search of tasty alternatives, and picky eaters like myself who love a highly customisable meal. https://www.facebook.com/apoketheory/videos/1727934657461047/ A Poke Theory
