[caption id="attachment_27571" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple User Jayson Yeoh[/caption]

Nothing is as delightful as a saucy, messy plate of curry rice when the city is fast asleep. This glorious plate of scissors-cut rice at Jalan Besar is liquid gold for late night party-goers. Slap a pork cutlet, braised cabbage, and a gooey fried egg onto your rice! As with any cai fun store, the price differs depending on what ingredients you pick, but the price hovers around $3.
If you have extra calories to spare, add the Ngoh Hiang to your rice – it has a nice crunch from the water chestnuts within the fried, crispy skin.

The best part of this hearty and economical meal is the mixture of 4 different types of sauces on the mountain of food – curry, braised gravy, chilli oil, and chilli sauce. A beautiful mess indeed.

The Best Rainbow Cakes To Indulge In While Celebrating The Freedom To Love

As June rolls around, it brings plenty of good stuff: the national treasure that is the Great Singapore Sale, turbulent Gemini season and, best of all, LGBTQ Pride Month.

Pride Month celebrations are meant to commemorate the June 28 anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, which is considered a milestone event in the modern fight for LGBTQ rights.

The rainbow flag has long been used to represent the LGBTQ community worldwide, and while there may have been some escalator drama and cake-bashing on our shores in recent weeks, love is still love and these events won’t dull our colours.

We’ve sussed out the best cafes around the island where you can give your sweet tooth the rainbow treatment in honour of Pride Month.

These Oishii Green Tea Desserts Will Make You Feel Matcha-m You’re In Japan

Matcha is love. Matcha is life.

Anyone with an obsession with matcha as unhealthy as ours will probably attest to the truth of this statement.

In the past couple of years, we’ve seen more and more Japanese joints setting up shop in Singapore. What that also means is more matcha-centric creations available right here on our shores. From hot lattes to cold parfaits, there are so many different ways to satisfy your matcha craving these days.

We rounded up a list of 7 places to get your hit of matcha, and we think you’ll love what we have in store for you.

1. Sun with Moon

This popular spot in town is well-known for its exquisite bento sets and signature kamameshi dishes. But something not as many people know is it dishes up some mean matcha flavoured desserts!

2. Non Entrée Dessert Café

If you haven’t heard of Non Entrée Dessert Café, where you have you been?

This dessert joint along up-and-coming hipster area, Rangoon Road, serves gorgeous cakes, and desserts with a dramatic flair.

Known for their unique local ice cream flavours (think: kaya toast ice cream) and deceptive bak chor mee dessert, one of their other signature items is the Avalanche Dessert.

[caption id="attachment_27131" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Matcha Avalanche (Image Credit: Burpple)[/caption]

For matcha lovers, Non Entrée’s Matcha Avalanche ($13.90) does not disappoint!

Photogenic, tasty, and a joy to watch in action, you and your friends will be fighting over who gets to do the honours. The matcha lave cake sits atop an almond nougatine which covers the bowl. Slice into the cake, and watch the matcha lava flow into the bowl, onto the roasted green tea ice cream and chocolate soil mixture underneath.

With its explosion of flavours and textures, this unique dish is definitely a winner!

As photogenic as they are tasty, the cakes come in flavours ranging from Trio Chocolate to Musang (mao shan wang 猫山王) durian flavour. You won’t have trouble finishing a slice all by yourself, as the cream is light and not overly gelat like some cakes can get.

If you’re thinking of having it to go, their dry ice sachets will keep the cakes chilled for about an hour.

Besides the cakes, you’ll find a satisfying selection of appetizers, mains, desserts, and hot and cold beverages served here.

Must try: Matcha Azuki, Bailey’s, Rainbow, and Musang Mille Crepe Cakes

12. Miyakori Cafe (Halal)

[caption id="attachment_25724" align="aligncenter" width="802"] Image Credit: @lovekimis[/caption]

Coffee with cute, stenciled animals and cakes with faces–these are some of the things you’ll find at this lovely cafe. It was an immense struggle deciding on the animals for our cakes and drinks. Not to mention, having to destroy these cute works of art killed us a little bit inside.

[caption id="attachment_25723" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Image Credit: @catherinechewkailay[/caption]

Sip on a cute kitty with this “Cat-puccino”, a brew with a nutty, chocolate-y aroma and a lingering sweetness. If you’re wondering, Miyakori’s coffee beans are imported from El Salvador, Sumatra, and Brazil.

[caption id="attachment_25722" align="aligncenter" width="797"] Image Credit: @whyohwhyareyouxy[/caption]

Their cutesy image is backed up with substance, for the cafe serves pretty good cheesecake and brownies. The cheesecake is warm and light, while the brownie leaves no chocolate lover in want with its rich and dark aftertaste.

Must Try: Oreo Cheesecake, Brownie, Strawberry Shortcake, Matcha Latte, Cat-puccino

Miyakori Cafe
Address:
41, Jalan Indah 22/14, Bukit Indah 2, Johor Bahru

13. Monsta Cafe

[caption id="attachment_25726" align="aligncenter" width="772"] Image Credit: @suann84[/caption]

Old school meets cute-slash-psychedelic at this cafe. Retro school lockers, carpet grass and cloud motifs on the walls… We love the eclectic vibe of this coffee spot. At the entrance, look out for a large pink behemoth, the guardian of this 2-storey cafe.

Try their much raved about Cold Brew coffee, and sip on one of their lattes, which come with customisable latte art. Pick your design, or let the barista surprise you!

[caption id="attachment_25728" align="aligncenter" width="790"] Image Credit: @annyew[/caption]

Dig into their Monsta Espresso Chicken Chop that comes with a shot of Espresso, lending the sauce a unique kick of flavour. The Monsta Mamee Burger is also crunchy and addictive, but we advice eating it deconstructed, as it’ll fall apart after a bite.

Must try: Cotton Candy Affogato, Cold Brew Coffee, Monsta Mamee Burger, Monsta Espresso Chicken Chop

Monsta Cafe
Address:
157 Jalan Bestari ⅕ Taman Nusa Bestari Skudai. 81300 Johor Bahru

14. Roost Repurposed & Recycled

[caption id="attachment_25740" align="aligncenter" width="797"] Image Credit: @egotisc[/caption]

An old beer crate, a plastic container and empty glass bottles are given a new lease of life at this cafe that really knows how to turn waste into wonder.

[caption id="attachment_25742" align="aligncenter" width="804"] Image Credit: @immissmai[/caption]

Not only are they pros at recycling, they’re just as adept at serving tasty grub. Share a plate of chicken meatballs and mashed potatoes with your friends. After that, have a bowl of their signature frozen yogurt for dessert.

A New Café Gem Has Opened Up On Rangoon Road, And It’s Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale

Ever wish you could escape into a perfect fairy tale world?

Now, you can! Well, at least for lunch.

[caption id="attachment_26841" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]

The beautiful and charming Enchanted Cafe has just opened up along Rangoon Road, for you to dine and while away your weekends in a fantasy world.

Enchanting Ambience

First things first, the aesthetic of this place is on point!

Entering into this cafe is like stepping foot into the fairy tale garden of your dreams–the only things missing are actual fairies.

Picture a wooden shelf lined with large vintage books, twigs and potted plants hanging from the ceiling, fairy lights draped down branches and across the walls, and quirky, mismatched tables and chairs filling the space.

[caption id="attachment_26680" align="aligncenter" width="1628"] Image Credit: Image Credit: The food and drinks at Enchanted Cafe are just as dreamy, both in terms of taste and presentation.

Something you can’t miss is the theatrical Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90)–also the most instagram-worthy of them all.

It starts as a blue drink, set in a stone dish, surrounded by wispy smoke. Add an orange “potion”, swirl it all together, and it transforms into a deep, glittery purple.

[caption id="attachment_26678" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Enchanted Cafe Facebook[/caption]

Also on the menu are brunch favourites like the Big Breakkie ($17.90), as well as the Croque Madame ($14.90).

The standout item on the menu, however, would have to be a traditional favourite with a twist: The Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90).

This unique burger adds a touch of familiar Singaporean flavour to the otherwise fantasy-like setting.

Expect a tender pork patty marinated in five-spice seasoning, complete with bits of water chestnut, and black garlic sauce that’s made from scratch.

[caption id="attachment_26683" align="aligncenter" width="1188"] Image Credit: Ng Yi Yang[/caption]

And don’t leave without ordering dessert!

Your best bet here is the French Vanilla Crepe Cake.

The thin pancakes are fluffy, with generous layers of light, airy cream slathered in between. Perfect after a hearty meal.

Next weekend, why not bring your friends and camera here, for the perfect meal and #ootd!

Diana loved the spring rolls, as well as the sweet matcha lava cake dessert.

We were also impressed by their selection of imported Sake that even came with a reference index of the drinks’ sweetness and acidity levels.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BUosmChBv42/?taken-by=shivonchua[/embed]

Our ambassadors Chelsea, Cheryl, and Shivon got to catch the movie before anyone else!

They spent half the time laughing at all the sassy lines, and the other half bae-watching Zac Efron, we’re sure.

We think it’s safe to say this was one of the funniest movies they’ve seen this year.

This newest addition to the themed cafe scene may be the most magical one yet.

The quirky Enchanted Cafe charms at first sight with its beautiful decor, complete with a magical garden and collection of spell books.

Enchanted Cafe[/caption]

But what’s most striking is the presentation of its dishes.

Think: Bright red cherry compote, blackberries and blueberries in a vivid splash against a deep blue plate, sprinkled with seemingly handpicked bits of nuts and leaves. That’s what makes up the tangy, yet sweet Berries Compote French Toast ($14.90).

For something traditional with a twist, there’s the Ngoh Hiang Burger ($18.90), which is exactly what it sounds like, complete with bits of water chestnut and black garlic sauce made from scratch.

The most instagramable thing here is the Sorcerer’s Elixir ($9.90), a blue drink that turns glittery purple after an orange liquid is added.

This has to be the most enchanting cafe to open since the Harry Potter Cafe.

Forget Sugar Glazed, This Cafe Serves Up Savoury Donuts Like ‘Cheeseburger’ And ‘Bacon’ At Only $2.90 A Pop

If the mention of donuts calls to mind sugary, sweet treats, this cafe’s savoury creations are about to turn your world upside down.

Six By Sera, a little place off Rangoon Road, serves up a collection of delicious savoury donuts! Now, we finally have an excuse to eat donuts as a full meal, and not just as dessert.

[caption id="attachment_26405" align="aligncenter" width="952"] Image Credit: Six By Sera[/caption]

Oh So Savoury Donuts

The donuts here come in 3 scrummy flavours: Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Truffle Oil, Bacon and Mozzarella, and the Cheeseburger donut–a magical combination of minced beef, cherry tomatoes with a slice of melted cheddar, and jalapeño.

[caption id="attachment_26406" align="aligncenter" width="1188"] Image Credit: Six By Sera[/caption]

The best part? They are all selling at just $2.90!

Having one (or more!) of these beautifully presented babies as an afternoon snack will have us powering through the day for sure.

Pastries, Deserts & Coffee

Besides its unique savoury donuts, Six By Sera sells other amazing pastries as well, such as their signature croissants!

They are fragrant, buttery, flaky and airy–everything you could possibly want in a croissant.

[caption id="attachment_26407" align="aligncenter" width="1190"] Image Credit: Six By Sera[/caption]

Like the donuts here, the croissants comes in several unique, inventive flavours. These include the Smoky Pork Croissant ($12.90, served on weekends only), Scrambled Eggs & Bacon Croissant ($10.90), and Cheesecake Croissant ($6.60).

The Projector: How An Abandoned Theatre Became An Artsy Alternative Cinema

If you’ve heard of The Projector, you’ll know it is a completely alternative cinema concept.

Far from screening mainstream blockbusters, here you’ll find indie, foreign, cult favourite, classic, arthouse and local flicks.

But how did the fifth floor of the slightly crummy Golden Mile Tower come to house this artsy two-screen cinema?

Seems like its vintage appeal isn’t constructed at all, but stems from a long history we think you film buffs should know about…

The Golden Theatre

Once upon a time, there was the The Golden Theatre.

Situated in said Golden Mile Tower along Beach Road, it was once the largest cinema in all of Singapore and Malaysia.

Think: an impressive 1,500 stall and circle seats, all inside one massive movie theatre.

For those born before 1973, you may know its constructor, Chong Gay Theatres, who are also the ones behind the homely Kallang Theatre.

Back in the day, The Golden Theatre was well-patronised for its Mandarin films, ‘adult’ artistic films, and even Bollywood hits.

Sadly, with sparkly new shopping malls sprouting up through the ‘90s, its popularity slowly waned.

The majestic theatre split up into smaller, separate halls–Golden 1 and Golden 2, both of which then sunk into disrepair.

The Fixer Uppers

Enter creative development company Pocket Projects, and design and architectural firm FARM.

This group of passionate cinephiles banded together to breathe new life into this old, derelict, but also historic space.

And so restoration works began, in the form of The Projector.

The two halls also received new names, along with their new lease of life.

Golden 1 became the Green Room, and Golden 2, the Redrum–a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s classic ‘The Shining’.

Fast Forward

Today, the halls are once again as bustling as they were in the good old days.

Each of the two rooms at The Projector seats nearly 200 people, and are fitted with digital projectors.

The chairs in the front section of the Green Room have even been replaced with comfy bean bags.

They’ve also roped in Luna Films, the people in charge of curating local film festivals, to help select and bring in films to be screened.

Finally, to complete the movie-going experience, came the addition of a café to the cinema’s foyer, manned by Group Therapy Coffee. It sells classic movie snacks like popcorn, alongside burgers, pies, and cake, along with sodas, juices and their own coffee blends.

If you’ve ever lamented the limited range of films in Singapore, you now know where to find a great independent cinema.

For all its history, The Projector itself is definitely as fascinating as the movies it screens, and is well worth a visit.
