G’day Mate! 7 Australian Cafes In Singapore That Feel Just Like The Real Deal

G’day mate! Our experiences tell us that some of the best coffee and food in the world comes from down-under – Australian cafes.

As coffee lovers, we can’t help but fall in love with that fragrant, freshly roasted cuppa joe. Pair it with some delicious and wholesome food (especially breakfast!) and ta-da, your day is made.

Though we are in fast-paced Singapore, it is true that you can find some really authentic, slow and relaxed Australian cafes here!

The sourdoughs over at Luxe are freshly baked, toasted and served with butter & their house-made berry jam. So delightful.

6 Romantic & Secluded High-Tea Spots That Your Date Will Surely Approve Of!

Sarnies’ New Menu Packs A Solid Punch: From Curry Pasta To Overflowing Burgers!

Oft regarded as a tranquil sanctuary for coffee buffs and Aussie grub addicts, Sarnies has bowled us over with its latest dinner menu of hearty, honest-to-goodness cuisine.

In celebration of their 6 years of serving up comfort food and specialty coffee, Chef Zak has concocted a new dinner menu with dishes packing a solid punch.

14095851_1341853362493321_7339725522531091837_n

Sarnies has always placed an emphasis on providing wholesome meals made from scratch using only fresh, quality ingredients.

Their new dinner menu (served from 6pm onwards) features grass-fed beef, chicken free from any hormones or antibiotics, bacon cured in-house, and bread kneaded by hand.

Appetizers:

1. Spicy Buffalo Wings ($12)

For starters, we tried the Buffalo Wings and boy, did it awaken our raging appetites!

Less sweet and more flavourful than typical Buffalo wings, these wings packed a mouthful with their aromatic combination of spices – no fewer than 20 different spices were used.

[caption id="attachment_18049" align="alignnone" width="4320"]Dayumm hot wings Dayumm, hot WILE (Wings I’d Love to Eat)[/caption]

The kick of chilli was spicy enough to whet our palates just right, and to our relief, not enough to make us sweat our pores off.

The lime juice contained in the marinade added a refreshing, zesty tang to the wings, to which we give two thumbs up.

After being marinated, the wings are slow-cooked for approximately 5 hours to render the meat tender, then fried till crisp.

2. Slider trio: Grilled Haloumi, Cherry Tomatoes & Onion Jam ($13)

Their slider trio comes with a choice of Grilled Haloumi with Onion Jam & Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, or Pulled Pork with White Slaw & Homemade Barbeque Sauce.

Safe to say, we enjoyed every bite, right down to the bread buns lovingly kneaded and baked in-house daily.

13924965_1317031044975553_2265960496441263439_n

The salty umami flavour of the grilled haloumi gave a boost to the rest of the ingredients, while its faint hint of milkiness gently awakened our tastebuds.

[caption id="attachment_18051" align="alignnone" width="4320"]Spot the haloumi grilled to golden perfection Haloumi grilled to golden perfection[/caption]

At the same time, the roasted cherry tomatoes went to work in the texture department as they burst readily with a bite, releasing juicy tomato-ey goodness in an obscenely extravagant fashion.

Alongside all that hullabaloo, the onion jam served as a great accompaniment. Ever so tart and fruity, it gave the slider a final polish before it went sliding down our throats.

Mains:

1. Blackened Grass-fed Sirloin, Colombian-style Chimichurri & Olive Oil Mash ($24.50)

We took a bite and imagined ourselves dining on green pastures roaming with cows – that’s how good it was, we’re not kidding.

Cooked to medium and artfully charred on the outside, the beef was tender with a firm bite and a clean, meaty flavour.

[caption id="attachment_18053" align="alignnone" width="698"]That delectable pink centre Look at that delectable pink centre[/caption]

This was complemented by the refreshing Colombian-style chimichurri which gave the dish a refreshing twist.

Beneath the sirloin steak, lay a bed of silky smooth mash decadently flavoured with truffle oil – talk about hidden treasures, now you’ll get to taste it too.

2. Southern Indian Style Hand-Cut Pappardelle with Prawns, Coconut Milk & Curry Leaves ($19.50)

This was, in short, the best part of our night!

The broad, flat pasta noodles were hand-made and hand-cut by the chef himself, cooked to al dente perfection with a lovely springy bite.

Tossed in a generous amount of creamy coconut sauce, its bold curry fragrance hit us from across the café.

[caption id="attachment_18054" align="alignnone" width="698"]Tumeric golden as a Sultan's crown Golden af, my eyes hurt but my mouth waters[/caption]

Aromatic curry leaves were sprinkled atop the pasta to complete the picture of perfection.

We would love to say that it was delicious, but that wouldn’t do it sufficient justice.

3. Texas Style Burger with Overnight Smoked Brisket, White Slaw, Dijon, Gherkins, BBQ Sauce & Hand Cut Wedges ($26.50)

The best burgers are those overflowing with messy goodness and outrageously ridiculous proportions, as this one has taught us.

It gave new meaning to the phrase “a tall order”, as it was so chock full of smoked beef strips and creamy slaw that we couldn’t get it into our mouths all at once.

[caption id="attachment_18056" align="alignnone" width="4320"]More stacked than you, bro More stacked than you, bro[/caption]

The beef brisket was tender and finely-sliced, with a prominent smoky aroma it had acquired from being thoroughly infused with fragrant woodsmoke.

Paired with a soft burger bun freshly kneaded and baked that very day, there was absolutely nothing to gripe about.

For potato and truffle lovers, the burger comes with hand-cut wedges and a velvety truffle dip to pacify your cravings.

Dessert:

Churros with Salted Caramel & Chocolate Sauce ($10)

Crisp on the outside and doughy soft on the inside, this is exactly what we call good churros, no?

The dark chocolate sauce magically transformed the sweet choux pastry into a wand of bittersweet devilry.

Lovely sticks of sin

Our personal favourite was the combination of the churros and the salted caramel sauce. The latter was ooey, gooey and very much like a more buttery version of melted toffee.

We went away utterly convinced that some friendships are meant to be. Crispy, fluffy churros and rich sticky caramel are gonna be BFFs for life.

Our ambassador, Valerie, visited Sarnies too! Here’s her experience:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMi7Z5_goTs/?taken-by=cheeriosvalerie

By night’s end, we wound up with delicious grubby fingers, food-full bellies, and our belts two notches looser. If you’re keen on wholesome eating which tastes as good as sin, come grab some grub at Sarnies!

9 Places With Wholesome Good Food That Will Inspire You To Eat Clean!

New Hangout Spot, Chip Bee Gardens, Is Where All The Cool Things Are

Situated opposite Holland Village, Chip Bee Gardens is home to a few of our favourite hangouts. Located in a quieter, more peaceful, and relaxing district, Chip Bee Gardens is that perfect hideout for a little bit of me-time as well as a great choice for a laid back catch up session with friends.

You can be sure that the little cafes and ice cream parlours here serve up some really decent fare that will not disappoint.

1. Baker & Cook

At the very top of this list is Baker & Cook. Conceptualised by New Zealander Dean Brettschneider – one of the best bakers on the globe, this spacious and cosy cafe serves up a good selection of bread, pastries, salads and mains.

A bonus for coffee addicts – their lattes are to-die for.

Be sure to try their chocolate Lamingtons. It’s two layers of light and airy sponge cake filled with chocolate cream and covered with a thin layer of desiccated coconut.

Not overbearingly sweet and empowering, the flavours are also simple. Less is more, and we can’t help but reach out for seconds.

The wide selection of professionally curated Italian fare they serve will leave you spoilt for choice.

Pasta? Checked. Pizza? Checked.

Did we mention that most food are homemade as well? That’s surely a bonus.

Well, an Italian meal should always end with this one dessert, Tiramisu.

This dangerously addictive espresso-infused dessert consists of Italian Savoiardi biscuits soaked in Italian coffee and Marsala, layered with creamy Mascaarpone, and finally topped with shaved Valrhona chocolate. What goodness!

The latest addition to their cake collection is the Bailey’s Cheesecake with Speculoos.

Slow-baked and made with both Philadelphia light cream cheese and rich Bailey’s Irish cream, the cake is then topped with a splash of chocolate sauce and Speculoos. These different layers of flavours are undoubtedly a surprise to your palette.

Ice-cream at The Daily Scoop is made fresh, on a daily basis. Imagine that!

Also, extra brownie points to them for creating their goodness with locally-sourced and fresh ingredients. Artificial flavourings are a big no-no to them.

The Workbench Bistro @ AMK: More Than Just Waffles ‘Cos Their Mains Do Not Disappoint!

The Workbench Bistro is a hip contemporary cafe nestled under a block of HBD flats in the quiet neighbourhood of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, just behind Christ the King church.

img_3422-1

Serving up mains, a host of drinks including artisan ciders, dessert and even breakfast items, the café oozes simplicity and a homely, warm, and cosy charm.

The Workbench Bistro: Food

The café is small in size, but big on food.

The ice cream here is supplied from local brand Bing Bing while their food creations are a fusion of western and Singaporean flavours.

The Workbench Bistro takes pride in the presentation of their dishes! All are super picture worthy.

Salted egg chicken wings

The salted egg chicken wings ($12.90) was as delectable as it could get!

[caption id="attachment_16631" align="aligncenter" width="709"]Credit: cptslow yeo @burpple Credit: cptslow yeo @burpple[/caption]

They were super generous with the salted egg sauce. The sauce wasn’t overpowering, and it was just right – creamy and flavourful.

Egg lava beef burger

Next up was the egg lava beef burger ($16.90). The beef patty comes in the shape of a donut with the half boiled egg positioned inside.

img_3432

The burger is then topped with crispy grilled bacon and cheese.

When you cut the burger open, the yolk flows out nicely, hence the name egg lava. There were plenty of herbs infused into the meat. If you love your meat with a herby taste, you’d love this.

All the burgers are served with freshly made brioche buns and paprika fries!

Crab meat linguine

The crab meat linguine ($15.90) was our favorite main, the dish was very refreshing. Here’s what our ambassador, Ruth, had to say!

screen-shot-2016-10-18-at-2-37-24-pm

The lumpy, jumbo crab meat was more than sufficient and the pasta itself was cooked to perfection – Al dente!

img_3431-1The sauce is a mixture of white wine and light tomato cream sauce. Surprisingly, it was delicate and light. We didn’t feel gelat at all! Could totally eat this forever.

We also had their signature truffle fries ($9.90), which smelled heavenly, and their iced chocolate ($5.50) and the iced green tea latte ($6.00), which were served in pretty mason jars.

The Workbench Bistro: Dessert

Finally came the behemoth that is the s’moreffles supreme ($29.90).

By the time we reached this part of the meal, we had to ask the chefs if they could just give us 2 instead of 3 waffles, which they did so with a smile.

the-workbench-bistro-waffles

The waffles were dark red and green. As a dish together, it certainly provided the wow factor. It looked impressive and tasted even better – the perfect guilty indulgence!

It was a tad sweet, and should definitely be shared.

Our Verdict?

The café itself was very comfortable. We were there for almost 2 hours and did not feel unwelcome at any point of time. The service was prompt and food was served at a brisk pace upon ordering.

With a cosy, rustic interior and reasonable prices (they do not add any service taxes or GST!), this café is definitely worth a visit!

No, I’m not recommending you any Korean Bingsu. I know you’ve seen enough of the Kimchi-Land dessert.

This lovely Purple Sweet Potato Milky Snow Mountain is the proud creation of Niceday Taiwan Snow & Grass Jelly Desserts. The base is made using silky smooth grass jelly all the way from Taiwan, covered with a mountain of fluffy ice shavings and chewy balls.

Imagine yourself in Taipei as you enjoy the pleasant bowl of dessert. Notice a small bowl of Taro Q mix and mochi balls in a separate bowl? Add in the balls to your dessert when you wish, otherwise the balls may become stiff in the icy bowl if they are put together.

So thoughtful of the owner to make sure the dessert is served in the best condition!

5. Epicurious Cafe

[caption id="attachment_14320" align="alignnone" width="900"]rainbow-cheese-toastie-desserts Image Credit: Daniel Food Diary[/caption]

First it was rainbow cake making the Insta-rounds. Then earlier in the year, videos of rainbow-coloured cheeses stretching in various postures went viral, thanks to Kala Toast in Hong Kong. And now, our own Epicurious Cafe has also created the first Rainbow Cheese Toastie in Singapore.

The rainbow is made up of 5 different colours and flavours: Pink (beetroot), Orange (carrot), Green (Spinach), Blue (potato and garlic with butterfly pea) and Violet (eggplant and red cabbage).

Great to know that it’s made using natural ingredients and minimal colouring. At least we can eat this appealing cheese toastie at ease! Have fun stretching your rainbow for the best shots before you tuck in to the crispy and buttery toast!

Located in a shop unit of the first floor in the old commercial Sultan Plaza building, The Pound‘s classier decor makes it stand out from the rest of the shops. The Pound is a small cafe specializing in premium Dutch Iced Coffees and homemade cakes. Unlike other Korean-owned cafes, they do not sell the Korean Bingsu.

What you will find here is roll cakes that look so delicately tasteful. Leave some stomach space after a satisfying kopitiam meal nearby for their Earl Grey Roll Cake. Light with a chiffon-like texture, the earl grey flavour was subtle and a perfect dessert for a complete meal.

1. Hojiak Black & White Rojak

[caption id="attachment_14006" align="alignnone" width="1600"]hojiak-rojak-khatib Image Credit: Cavin Teo[/caption]

As the name of this stall implies, they sell real “ho-jiak” (“delicious” in Hokkien) rojak, a popular local delight.

Hojiak Black & White Rojak has been faithfully serving the palatable delight to residents around Khatib MRT for a long time. While it has moved from one coffee shop to another within the same neighbourhood, it is always strategically located next to the drinks stall.

Rojak served with the black shrimp paste (“hae ko”) is considered a sinfully unhealthy food. But who can resist the plate of crisp tofu and dough fritters, with crunchy cucumber and turnip slices drizzled with lots of diced peanuts? I can’t!

If you prefer a healthier version, try the white rojak which is served with sour plum sauce, a refreshing tangy taste that is equally yummy too!

Shami Banana Leaf Delights is a popular Indian food stall that started operations at Northpoint Shopping Centre food court since 1993. There were crazy queues in front of the stall during meal times back in the good old days.

Their signature dish has to be the nasi briyani set that comes with flavourful meat served on fluffy briyani rice. With the expansion of 2 outlets at Food Republic Causeway Point and Sembawang Road, it’s now more convenient to get your briyani fix!

Yet another perennial favourite of the northlanders, Chong Pang Nasi Lemak started as a humble stall in the Chong Pang Village Hawker Centre in 1973. Over the years, it has gained such a huge following with its freshly cooked dishes that it has since relocated to a coffee shop along Sembawang Road to cater to a larger crowd.

The coconut rice is aromatic but not overpowering. Popular dishes include the specially marinated chicken wings fried to perfection, spicy long beans and sambal brinjal. For a really satisfying meal with a kick, don’t forget to add their signature chilli sauce!

Also found in Chong Pang Food Centre, Xiang Xiang Fishball Noodles is one of my favourite comfort food. This is a familiar name to many of those who grew up in the old kampung days in Nee Soon.

As one of the rare hawker stalls that still serves food to your table, Xiang Xiang’s fishballs are big and springy, made with fresh yellowtail fish or ikan parang. Try the dry spicy version for a savoury bowl of noodles tossed with a generous mix of lard, chilli paste and soy sauce. The accompanying soup is lightly flavoured with “chye poh” (preserved turnip) which adds to the fragrance!

10 Food In Bukit Merah So Good That They’ll Make You Weep Tears Of Joy

We’ve always harbored the assumption that Bukit Merah was a ghost town with little or nothing to offer. We had no idea what started it but my oh my, how foolish we were. Turns out, Bukit Merah is home to so many great places that offer quality food.

With this, Discover SG has completed yet another food listicle that takes you on a foodgasmic tour of the best spots to grab an affordable meal (under $15) at Bukit Merah.

  1. Tian Tian Curry Rice

It’s hard to walk by Tian Tian without passing a look at all its endorsements displayed at the stall front. Boasting at least 6 different types of curries to suit your palate, enjoy a collision of sweet and savoury gravies together with your standard cai fan fare.

  1. Bukit Merah View Carrot Cake

Meh, what’s so special about carrot cake? Don’t they all taste the same? Well, this 60+ year old stall nestled in the heart of Bukit Merah is probably the last of its kind in Singapore that serves true blue carrot cake. What we mean is, they actually mill their own rice to make the fried radish cake we all so fondly love. That’s maybe why they taste so much better.

It may seem like any other typical Nasi Lemak stall, but beneath the façade is one of the juiciest, crispiest, and finger-licking chicken wings you can find at a hawker centre. PM Lee approves!
