Here’s An Ingenious Way To Easily Save 10% Off Your Dining Bills

When it comes to the end of the month, some of us always have issues with ‘meal budgeting’ (read being broke and hungry).  An eat-out meal can easily cost up to $25 per person and all that MSG from 3 servings of instant noodles per day isn’t the best idea.

Fortunately, at Discover SG, we understand the pain of not being able to enjoy good food! We’ve teamed up with HollerOut, a referral marketing app with some of the best meal deals in town, to bring you 10% discounts off some of your dining bills.

Here are 6 irresistible deals that will do your wallet a big favour. The best part? You will even get rewarded, monetarily, when you refer friends! Read on to find out how this works.

Hello Kitty vs Pompompurin – Here’s The Low-down On Both Cafes!

With the recent launch of the Hello Kitty and Pompompurin Cafe, and the upcoming launch of the Pokemon Café later this month (limited time period), character-themed cafes here seem to be facing fierce competition. With so many choices, and so little time, which cafe should you visit? Without further ado, we analyse and compare both cafes, so you can prioritise which to visit!

Pompompurin Cafe

[caption id="attachment_7159" align="alignnone" width="640"]Pompompurin Cafe Singapore - Pompurin and friends Credit: youngparents.com[/caption] [caption id="attachment_7160" align="alignnone" width="640"]Pompompurin Cafe Singapore - Seating Credit: youngparents.com[/caption]

Fans of Sanrio would probably have heard of this café which opened a few weeks back. Like what its name implies, the Pompompurin café’s décor and food are designed after the yellow canine – from the pancakes to the caramel pudding down to the seats and placemats.

Aside from the limited edition Pompompurin merchandise, selected dishes like the signature Bagel’s Special: Pancake Tower ($21.99, pictured bottom right) comes with a Pompompurin mug which you can take home!

[caption id="attachment_7165" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]26432926951_7101eb1a89_b Credit:

Hello Kitty fans rejoice! Now, there is no need to fly overseas to get your Hello Kitty fix because you have a Hello Kitty cafe at your doorstep. And it’s open 24 hours to boot!

Hello Kitty merchandise are displayed and available for purchase. There’s also a limited edition Hello Kitty plushie, which is the first worldwide to feature a double bow, up for grabs (500 pieces only at $49.90 each). Custom Hello Kitty-inspired tea blends ($38.90), and grow-it-yourself plant kits ($34.50) are sold along with other Hello Kitty merchandise.

Hello Kitty Cafe Singapore menu and price

Since this café is under Europar Specialty Restaurants (S) Pte Ltd, which is under the subsidiary of ABR Holdings Limited who owns Swensen’s, the gelatos ($6 per scoop) and soft serves ($4.90) are a must try. They are my personal favourites out of the whole menu!

This Garden-themed Sanrio café is open around the clock (the first in the world) so night owls now have a new hang out spot!

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe
Price range: About $15 to $24 per main dish
Location: Arrival Hall Central #01-22, Terminal 3, Singapore Changi Airport
Opening hours: Open 24 hours daily
Maximum seating capacity: 84 pax
Advantages: open 24 hours, quality food (as compared to kawaii food), adult-oriented, merchandise available for purchase, beautiful orchids and plants displayed to keep to Orchid Garden theme, subtle Hello Kitty decor and interior

Verdict: Having analysed and been to both cafes, we’ll have to say that each has its own pros and cons. Pompompurin Cafe is certainly very family friendly and great for kids. Their adorable food will coax and please even the fussiest child to eat. On the other hand, Hello Kitty’s decor and menu is more suited to adults, and their location at Changi Airport makes it convenient to stop for a visit and a bite. Conclusion? It’s a draw!

A.R.C. – The Café All Hipsters Dream About

Warm fuzzy lights, quaint ceramic cups and cold brews served in light bulbs, if this isn’t a classic hipster café, we seriously don’t know what is.

[caption id="attachment_7113" align="alignnone" width="1000"]DSC_0075-01 We can totally imagine spending a lazy Sunday here[/caption] [caption id="attachment_7118" align="alignnone" width="1000"] One of the café’s many instagram-worthy corners[/caption] [caption id="attachment_7054" align="alignnone" width="5616"] Award winning barista John Ryan Ting[/caption]

Located at Sultan gate, A.R.C. is an Academy, Roastery, and of course, a Café. Helmed by award(s) winning John Ryan Ting, who is also the first Singaporean barista to reach the semi-finals of the World Barista Championship, you can be assured of the coffee quality served at this quaint café. Did we also mention that Andrea Tan, the Champion of Singapore National Brewers Cup 2015 is also making coffee at A.R.C.? Excuse us whilst we scream a little.

[caption id="attachment_7055" align="alignnone" width="1334"]Top: Cold BrewBottom: 1 + 1 Top: Cold Brew
Bottom: 1 + 1[/caption]

So after that entire introduction, it’s only right to say that we started off with A.R.C.’s signature beverage, the Cold Brew, and 1 + 1. Comprising of Kenyan beans that are immersed in water overnight, the Cold Brew ($8-$12) makes a refreshing drink that is best enjoyed over ice. Despite its acidity, the Cold Brew isn’t overly sour and is pleasantly fruity. The drink is also served in an aesthetically pleasing glass light bulb that you can bring home as souvenir.

The 1 + 1 ($7) is a little more interesting. In A.R.C.’s attempt to allow patrons to enjoy their coffee as both black and white, the concept behind 1 + 1 comprises of a single espresso shot (black) and a milk-based espresso (white). For its price, this mini coffee platter is definitely a steal.

[caption id="attachment_7056" align="alignnone" width="999"]Salmon Tartare Salmon Tartare[/caption]

Despite having visited the café thrice (it’s that good), you’ll be surprised to learn that we have barely sampled half its food items. Talk about having an extensive menu.

Starting off with the Salmon Tartare ($14.80), we were pleasantly surprised by the pink peppercorns that would burst with flavour whenever we bit into them. If you’re not exactly a fan of salmon, worry not. We had a non-salmon lover taste the dish and the plate ended up sparkly clean. We kid you not.

[caption id="attachment_7057" align="alignnone" width="999"]Tender Beef Cheeks Tender Beef Cheeks[/caption]

For the mains, we found the Tender Beef Cheeks ($18.80) very aptly named. Absolutely tender and succulent, this hearty dish is definitely one for the beef lovers. It may be strange to pay this much attention to a side dish, but we have to say that the accompanying Mashed Potato was de-li-cious. Thank god the chef that it’s also available as a side dish.

[caption id="attachment_7059" align="alignnone" width="999"] The Cod Fish[/caption]

The Cod Fish ($31.80) however, is easily the star of the show. This melt-in-your-mouth-pan-seared Cod Fish is a must-have. We repeat; a must-have. Appropriately seasoned and tender soft, this lip-smacking dish will do more than make up for its relatively higher price tag.

[caption id="attachment_7116" align="alignnone" width="1000"]Can a Tiramisu get any more adorable? Can a Tiramisu get any more adorable?[/caption]

If you’re into creative desserts, you’ve come to the right place. When we first laid our eyes on A.R.C.’s Flower Pot Tiramisu ($6.80), we couldn’t believe how adorable it is. Seriously, just look at it. The flavour of this dessert is appropriately strong without being overpowering at the same time. Made with the café’s house blend, this tiramisu may be no hero but it is definitely something to shout about.

[caption id="attachment_7200" align="alignnone" width="729"]Image Credit: @the_royal_son Image Credit: @the_royal_son[/caption]

The Espresso Waffle with Tahitian Vanilla Ice-Cream ($11.80) is a delight. Similarly, this dessert is infused with the café’s house blend, giving it its unique coffee aroma. The waffle is really crispy on the outside and is not as dense so no worries about feeling gelat when tucking into this delicious dessert!

[GIVEAWAY] Dose! – The Must Visit Café For Your Daily Dose Of Coffee

That’s right, it’s Dose! (with the exclamation mark). Given the owner’s enthusiasm for coffee and food, we have to say, the use of this punctuation is pretty apt.

Tucked along Tyrwhitt Road, this unassuming café is one of the latest additions to this hipster area. With its specialty coffee, varied food menu and cosy space, all you need is a good book or a laptop and you’ll never want to leave this café. We swear.

[caption id="attachment_6211" align="alignnone" width="1334"]Image Credit: @tapeitoff Image Credit: @tapeitoff[/caption]

With Chye Seng Huat Hardware across the street and Tiramisu Hero down the road, competition is more than stiff for this humble café. Like you, we were just as curious about its location. How does Dose! intend to have its competition beat? Turns out, instead of instagram-worthy décor or any hipster related gimmick, this café goes back to basic by placing its emphasis on its menu.

[caption id="attachment_6212" align="alignnone" width="1322"]Image Credit: @tapeitoff Image Credit: @tapeitoff[/caption]

First up, we have Dose!’s specialty coffee. The Candyman Espresso Blend consists of a mixture of three beans; the Ethiopian, Colombian, and Guatemalan beans. With its light-medium roast, the coffee was pleasantly smooth with, dare we say, zero acidity. We had the Latte ($6) and its flavour is slightly chocolate-y and malty at the same time. If you’re not a kopi gao person, the café’s specialty coffee is definitely for you. Usual coffee aside, Dose! also offers two particularly intriguing drinks; the Black Latte and Miloso.

[caption id="attachment_6250" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Black Latte <br /> Image Credit: @tapeitoff The Black Latte

The Black Latte ($6) is a bamboo charcoal infused coffee and is entirely black. For those who are worried about the charcoal overpowering the taste of coffee, fear not. You can definitely still taste the coffee whilst enjoying this unique drink. As for the Miloso ($6), it’s simply a combination of Milo and Espresso. We’re not sure about you, but this drink reminds us of a less thick Mocha. To be honest, we’ll take the Miloso over the usual Mocha any day.

[caption id="attachment_6218" align="alignnone" width="1000"]IMG_5939_Fotor Full Dosage #2: Featuring the delightfully crispy spiced chorizo and cheese bratwurst

When it comes to food, Dose! certainly does not skimp on quality and quantity. Jumping right off the menu will be the popular Full Dosage #2, Savory Waffle-Wich and Chili Crab Pasta. With its crispy-skinned chorizo, cheese bratwurst, and fluffy croissant, Full Dosage #2 ($13.90) makes a delightfully wholesome brunch. Flavourful sausages aside, we simply cannot get over how awesomely crispy and fluffy the croissant is. The secret, we’re told, is how the croissant is air fried instead of deep-fried. We’re telling you guys, c’est manifique!

[caption id="attachment_6235" align="alignnone" width="1000"]Chili Crab Pasta Image Credit: @tapeitoff Chili Crab Pasta

For its signature Chili Crab Pasta ($13.90), the chef has meticulously included some mantous to complete the dish. In the pasta sauce, you’ll find chunks of authentic crab meat (that’s right, chunks) and mushrooms. For those who aren’t exactly fans of spicy food, fair warning: this dish may be a little too hot for you to handle so do consult the café’s staff before placing your order! Also, do note that this dish is only available on Wednesday!

For a cosy coffee spot, we thought Dose! has a relatively extensive menu. That is until we heard that the café is planning on introducing more mouth-watering dishes such as the Kong Bak Waffle-Wich, and Laksa Seafood Pasta. We’re not sure about you, but given its track record with food, we’re already anticipating the realisation of these new dishes.

[caption id="attachment_6236" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Charcoal Waffles

For desserts, we’d recommend Charcoal Waffles with ice cream ($11), and Dose!’s handmade Tiramisu. To our pleasant surprise, the Earl Grey ice cream for our waffle is topped with teeny lavender buds that really complemented the flavor of the ice cream. The waffle is appropriately crispy and not too doughy, so yes to more Charcoal Waffles! As for the Tiramisu, all we gotta say is that fans of baileys will really dig this dessert.

If you’re not already thinking of visiting this quaint café, we’re going to bring you more good news. Besides free wifi and power plugs, Dose! is offering a lucky reader one complimentary set of

BLACK LATTE AND CHARCOAL ICE-CREAM WAFFLES

How to win:

Delivering The Best Pastries From Cafes To You – CafeHopping In A Box

Let’s be honest, the issue with cafe hopping is that we get disappointed most of the time. You see these edited pictures and think to yourself that the cafe is worth visiting. You live deep in Woodlands and hop on a one-hour bus ride to Pasir Ris.

Alas, the food is horrible. You don’t know what’s worse — the fact that you wasted a huge chunk of time, or the thought that you were misled by a dishonest review. And the cycle repeats itself every weekend.

What’s a cafe hopper to do? Easy, you turn to CafeHopping In A Box.

[caption id="attachment_5393" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: CafeHopping In A Box[/caption]

Pastries from the best cafes

CafeHopping In A Box is the trouble-free solution for dessert fanatics who detest travelling all over Singapore just to grab a quick bite of an oven-fresh pastry. With this new bakery, you can easily buy different types of baked goods curated from four or six different cafes in a box.

[caption id="attachment_5766" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Credit: CafeHopping In A Box[/caption]

Now you get to try the pastries first before deciding if you want to head down.

Notice the S$37.20 Classic Box of 6 below? (Caution: this might cause excessive drooling. You’ve been warned.)

[caption id="attachment_5396" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: CafeHopping In A Box[/caption]

It features The Bakery Chef’s rainbow cake; Grin Affair’s lychee passion fruit cake jar; Karafuru’s yuzu eclair, gianduja eclair, and ichigo cheesecake eclair; and Doi Chaang Coffee’s matcha and azuki crepe cake.

They all look too beautiful to eat, don’t they?

[caption id="attachment_5765" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Credit: CafeHopping In A Box[/caption]

A quick peek at the website shows that there’s a wide assortment of pastry masterpieces for you to choose from. You can also mix and match! And the best part? There’s never a dull moment, because the menu changes biweekly.

[caption id="attachment_5835" align="aligncenter" width="1382"]Credit: CafeHopping In A Box Credit: CafeHopping In A Box[/caption]

Each pastry costs between S$5.80 to S$6.90, while the Classic Box of 4 and 6 can set you back at S$24 to S$28 and S$34 to S$38 respectively. The store requires a 3 day advanced order for their Classic Boxes, so see to it that you remember this bit to avoid disappointment.

You can either choose to collect the pastries at Bukit Timah Plaza, or pay an additional $30 for delivery (excluding Jurong Island).

The Tiramisu Hero Strikes Back With A Brand New Menu!

What do you think of when you hear someone say “Sir Antonio”? If you’re anything like me, you’d probably picture a tall, armour-donning knight with a curly moustache.

Sir Antonio

However, for the patrons of The Tiramisu Hero, what comes to mind is a cat wearing a zorro mask and a flowing cape. Now, that’s majestic.

[caption id="attachment_5526" align="aligncenter" width="612"] Credits: Burpple[/caption]

Sir Antonio is actually the mascot of The Tiramisu Hero, a cosy little cafe located at 121 Tyrwhitt Road. They even made an animated clip of his back story!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh6cdSZ1lTc ]

Oh, did I mention? Once you step into the cafe, you will be greeted with a really adorable sculpture of Sir Antonio.

13 Tiramisu Flavours

The Tiramisu Hero is known for their selection of delicious tiramisu served in a jar, with flavours ranging from baileys (alcoholic) to speculoos (spiced cinnamon) to durian. You can either order these from their

The Tiramisu Hero’s New Menu!

You’d probably think that they are exclusively a dessert joint. Contrary to its name, The Tiramisu Hero also serves a respectable variety of food and drinks.

In fact, they’ve been working hard at it and have just launched a new menu. (Click on image for clearer view.)

Check out the extensive menu. The food and drinks are to die for!

As much as I wanted to, trying every single thing on the menu is just not possible. I ended up trying two of the dishes that seemed really appealing to me. Here’s how it went!

Truffle Salmon Cold Pasta

The strong flavours of salmon, truffle oil and ebiko, coupled with the neutrality of the cold pasta created a balanced and refreshing taste. It was a pleasant surprise as I did not expect the flavours to mesh so well together.

Furthermore, in our hot and humid Singapore, cold pasta is definitely the perfect dish whenever you need to beat the heat. Go ahead and get some!

Salted Egg Pasta

One of the dishes that we couldn’t resist ordering was their salted egg pasta. Well, that is to be expected since the salted egg craze has been going out of control these days.

When the pasta was served, it was generously coated with a layer of salted egg sauce. They certainly don’t skimp on the good stuff! The rich flavour of salted egg yolks, combined with a slight tinge of spice was so addictive that it kept me going for more. This dish is highly recommended for all salted egg fans because I’m sure you will love it as much as I did!

The quality and variety of their food menu is comparable and better than many other cafes out there. If you ever fancy a place to have a meal AND a dessert, give this place a try! As a bonus, you can even take a photo with the irresistibly cute Sir Antonio as a keepsake! How cool is that?

PS: I have heard rumors that Sir Antonio aspires to be as successful as Hello Kitty. Give him a hand, will ya!
