The McVerdict: Are McDonald’s New Items As Bad As Everyone Says They Are?

It’s a lovely Friday. We’re so close to the weekend. And I thought, “You know what, treat yo’self. You gon’ have Macs today.”

I got on GrabFood, ordered my usual McSpicy meal with cheese no veg, coke zero (cos I’m on a diet), no upsize. But this time I changed the fries to their latest ‘Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries‘ to see if it’s worth my money, calories and effort to write this article.

Within the next 30 minutes, my abang delivery arrived and gave me a bleak stare before handing over my food.

Was this already a bad sign?

Is It Worth It?

Just like anyone else, I quickly reached out for the box of Salted Egg Yolk fries first to see if got enough sauce anot? And to my surprise, they poured a pretty decent amount of sauce all over my fries.

[caption id="attachment_38688" align="aligncenter" width="3973"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

So I thought, “How bad could this be right?”

I took my first bite and everything froze in time. The wind stopped blowing. The birds stopped chirping. I saw dark clouds looming in the distance.

It. Was. Terrible.

[caption id="attachment_38685" align="aligncenter" width="4032"]mcdonalds Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

It tastes nothing like Salted Egg Yolk. It was strangely tangy and creamy and it left a really unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth. It was sad as Donald Trump would’ve said. Thanks McDonald’s for the generous amount of sauce but did QC seriously approve of the taste?

Instead of finishing my fries, I got on McDonald’s Singapore Facebook page to put together a list of my favourite comments:

And my favourite one of all:

Calling it “Salted Egg Yolk” sauce was definitely a bit of a stretch.

Sorry McDonald’s but thank u, next.

The Peach Pie on the other hand sounded like a pretty good contender to take on the classic Apple Pie. According to pictures, it has a vibrant pink crust pocketing a hot peach filling.

[caption id="attachment_38687" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_38686" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: Discover SG[/caption]

All pretty in pink, I surprisingly enjoyed it as compared to the fries (pretty low benchmark, I must admit). It smells exactly like Peach Tea or Pink Dolphin. I’ve grown super familiar and comfortable with the classic Apple Pie but I won’t mind going back to McDonald’s for another Peach Pie.

Also don’t lie and say “but Apple Pie more authentic leh”. Let’s be real, when was the last time you ordered one?

The only great thing that came out of my meal today was the McSpicy add cheese no veg. Trust me, just skip the Salted Egg Yolk Fries the next time you’re at McDonald’s.

Thanks McDonald’s for the effort you put into releasing the new items but seriously have you tried Salted Egg Yolk man?!

McDonald’s Rings In The New Year With Salted Egg Yolk Fries – Available From 3 Jan

Feeling sleepy and groggy at work today?

We feel you.

If you’re feeling as down as we are, then we have some great news for you. McDonald’s is here to make your day a little better – they’ll be launching the all new Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries from 3 January for a limited time only.

New Year, New Menu

Sure, it’s 2019 and we should really start saying goodbye to Salted Egg Yolk but this combination seems pretty promising. Imagine your favourite French Fries topped with a generous serving of Salted Egg Yolk sauce. It’ll be topped with curry leaves for that sweet and savoury taste. Enjoy the Salted Egg Yolk Fries for $1.20 when you upgrade your fries with any meal.

As if that wasn’t enough, they’re bringing back the highly popular Ha Ha Cheong Gai Drumlets which was released in July last year. Yes, our favourite prawn paste chicken is making a comeback and you can now have it in the Happy Sharing Box (Special Edition) from just $7.90.

Moving on to desserts – McDonald’s is launching 2 new desserts! The first is a Pandan Soft Serve – think pandan chiffon cake but in ice cream form. You can have it in a cone, ChocoCone, Sundae or McFlurry (from $1).

[caption id="attachment_38663" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore[/caption]

Next up is the all-new Peach Pie ($1.40). It’s filled with juicy white peach chunks and the crust is wait for it…pink.

[caption id="attachment_38662" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore[/caption]

So if you’re feeling a little moody at work today, look forward to these tasty treats that will brighten up your week. You can definitely count on food to make it all better!

McDonald’s Samurai Burger And Shaker Fries Returns To Macs On Oct 4 Along With A New Savoury Pie

A year ago, a treasure was taken away from us.

Back after a year long absence, the Samurai Burgers from McDonald’s will be available from 4th October onwards for a limited time only.

Accompanying these burgers on their return trip is an assortment of old and new sides like the Dinosaur McFlurry, a savoury pie and our favourite seaweed shaker fries that got a whole new upgrade!

They’re Back!

The Samurai Burger is among the cult favourites of McDonald’s fans in Singapore.

[caption id="attachment_37644" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore[/caption]

If you’ve never had a Samurai Burger (why?!), you can expect to sink your teeth into a juicy quarter pound beef or chicken patty dipped in teriyaki sauce and lettuce sandwiched between sesame buns.

No words can possibly describe our love for the Samurai Burger and we’re just really glad it’s finally back in stores. Available from $6.10 a la carte, you better hurry and get your hands on the Samurai Burgers before they’re gone again.

[caption id="attachment_37640" align="aligncenter" width="4387"]mcdonalds Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore®[/caption]

If you’ve been craving for McDonald’s famous seaweed shaker fries, then you’ll be pleased to know that they got a whole new upgrade. The Roasted Sesame & Sesame Shaker Fries ($3.40 a la carte) is bound to be an addictive snack.

A couple of days ago, McDonald’s announced that they will be revealing their first ever savoury pie on the menu.

[caption id="attachment_37639" align="aligncenter" width="7000"]mcdonalds Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore®[/caption]

And they delivered. The all-new Creamy Herb Chicken Pie ($1.80), the first of its kind at McDonald’s, is a burst of creaminess that packs all the goodness of chicken, carrots, potatoes, peas and mushrooms.

It’s different from the usual McDonald’s pie as the exterior is a flakier spiral crust – think Old Chang Kee Chicken Mushroom’O curry puff.

Finally, end off your meal with the indulgent Dinosaur McFlurry ($3) which comes with a generous amount of Milo powder and cocoa puffs.

[caption id="attachment_37641" align="aligncenter" width="4488"]mcdonalds Image Credit: McDonald’s Singapore®[/caption]

Mark your calendars, set your alarm clock and camp in front of McDonald’s because you’re about to indulge in one of McDonald’s best creations. All items are available after breakfast hours in all restaurants island-wide and via McDelivery from 4 October, while stocks last.

McDonald’s Is Sneaking Its Way Into Our Hearts With Its All New Ninja Burger

While the Samurai Burger is a must-eat every time it comes back on the McDonald’s menu, there’s a new burger coming that may soon be getting all the attention.

[caption id="attachment_31119" align="aligncenter" width="713"] Image Credit: McDonald’s[/caption]

Named the ‘Ninja Burger’, McDonald’s has gone dark with its latest offering, with black charcoal sesame burger buns that resemble the all-black gear of a Japanese Ninja.

This new McDonald’s burger contains a crispy chicken thigh patty, a good slathering of sweet Japanese Nanban sauce, sliced cucumbers, shredded white cabbage, and tartar sauce.

Order it as part of a meal and it’ll come with Seaweed Shaker Fries (L) and Heaven & Earth Green Tea (M) for $9.20. If you want to enjoy the burger on its own, you can order it a la carte at $6.40!

Given the beloved status of the Samurai Burger and the incredible success that was the Nasi Lemak Burger, we won’t be surprised if the Ninja Burger really takes off.

Available from 2 Nov onwards, be sure to get it at your nearest McDonald’s once it’s out!

Rumor Has It The Nasi Lemak Burger Is Coming Back, And We’re Keeping Our Fingers Crossed

Word on the street is that McDonald’s will be bringing back its Nasi Lemak Burger!

A burger that received plenty of hype from the moment it was announced – and that shut down disbelievers with its tasty mixture of flavours once released – the burger sold out a short 2 weeks after it hit McDonald’s outlets across the island.

[caption id="attachment_29275" align="aligncenter" width="989"] Nasi Lemak Burger[/caption]

Not everyone managed to get a taste of the locally inspired burger, and despite queuing for hours to try the burger, many had to leave empty-handed.

It’s not just those who didn’t get to try it that were left devastated; many of us who did manage to get our hands on the burger were saddened when news hit that McDonald’s had run out of them.

[caption id="attachment_29277" align="aligncenter" width="650"] Image Credit: Superadrianme[/caption]

Sure, there are alternatives to the Nasi Lemak Burger, with eateries like Marie Antoinette, The Beast and Makansutra Gluttons Bay selling their own versions – some even with actual nasi – but they just aren’t quite the same.

Word is that we can expect the reappearance of the Nasi Lemak Burger at the end of August. There is no official confirmation as yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know once we receive any information on these burgers!

Our 100% #notspon Review On McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger, Chendol McFlurry And More

By now, I’m sure we’ve all caught wind of the news that McDonald’s has released some new limited edition flavours in conjunction with Singapore Food Festival 2017.

While some of these sounded odd from the get-go (e.g Nasi Lemak Burger), some of these sounded like they had the potential to taste really, really good (e.g Chendol McFlurry)!

[caption id="attachment_28231" align="alignnone" width="1162"] McDonald’s Latest Offerings[/caption]

Curious about how these new local-inspired items would taste, we got our hands on all of them and here’s our verdict:

1. Nasi Lemak Burger

The Nasi Lemak Burger – the dish we were the most curious about. Does it taste like Nasi Lemak? Does it work as a burger?

[caption id="attachment_28227" align="aligncenter" width="989"] Nasi Lemak Burger[/caption]

The answer to that is yes, and somehow, yes. The fried chicken, fried egg, cucumber, and SAMBAL are all in there. The sambal is on the sweet side, coating everything in its sweet flavour and pulling all the ingredients of the burger together.

If you prefer your sambal spicy, or prefer spicy food in general, you might be a bit disappointed by the lack of heat. But overall, it was a tasty burger! While the coconut rice was missing in action, we didn’t miss it too much. After all, if we wanted something that tasted exactly like Nasi Lemak, we’d just order Nasi Lemak… right?

Worth trying at least once, this is definitely something we see ourselves returning for again and again, as long as they’re available in McDonald’s.

2. Chendol McFlurry

Chendol McFlurry – another item we were super stoked to try. Being people who appreciate a good bowl of chendol, an ice cream version of it sounded like a fantastic idea.

[caption id="attachment_28228" align="alignnone" width="1130"] Chendol McFlurry[/caption]

With green chendol jelly bits and gula melaka sauce, the Chendol McFlurry has all the makings of a good chendol dessert. Taste-wise, the soft serve complemented the chendol elements very well. The DiscoverSG team was torn on whether or not we liked this – some of us thought it was too sweet, while others (read: fans of chendol) thought it was nice, even if sweet.

Our verdict? Share it with a friend because it might get jelat after a while! Also, eat it quickly as it melts pretty fast!

3. Coconut Pie

The Coconut Pie, we initially weren’t too excited about. But after getting a taste, we were sold.

[caption id="attachment_28229" align="alignnone" width="1291"] Coconut Pie[/caption]

With the same crunchy, flaky crust as McDonald’s usual pies, the filling is not too sweet. The coconut flavour doesn’t come through strongly, but that’s actually what we love about it! The nata de coco was also a nice addition, giving you something to chew on between bites.

While coconut lovers may not be a big fan of these, those of you who typically steer clear of coconut should definitely give this a try. Those of us who aren’t the biggest fans of coconut had a change of heart after a bite of this!

4. Bandung McFizz

Finally, we’re left with the Bandung McFizz.

[caption id="attachment_28230" align="alignnone" width="1344"] Bandung McFizz[/caption]

The Bandung McFizz is a fizzy twist on the classic rose syrup drink. Like Bandung mixed with 7-up, this drink is not too sweet and not too milky – the perfect pick-me-up for a hot day in Singapore!

And that concludes our verdict on the latest additions to McDonald’s menu!

To round up, definitely try the Nasi Lemak Burger and the Coconut Pie. The Chendol McFlurry too, is worth a try, especially for sweet tooths and chendol lovers. As for the Bandung McFizz, drink it or don’t – you won’t be missing much!

These brand new flavours are available from today (Jul 13) onwards at all McDonald’s outlets, so hurry and be one of the first to try them!

Goodbye minions and hello Nasi Lemak burgers!

McDonald’s has just unveiled their new series for National Day 2017, and boy do they look scrumptious.

For an entire month, from July 13 2017, McDonald’s Singapore is joining the Singapore Food Festival with local-inspired food.

Singapore Burgers

Kick off your uniquely Singapore meal with the coconut pie with nata de coco chunks and a refreshing sip of bandung McFizz.

And once you’ve whetted your appetite, it’s time to dig into the good stuff.

The Nasi Lemak burger comes with a chicken thigh patty with cornflake batter, a fried egg, caramelised onions and cucumber slices.

The final topping is a generous sambal sauce, because what’s Nasi Lemak without sambal?

Sweet Memories To Come

And the limited edition menu does not stop there, for after burgers comes desserts.

For this, the Chendol McFlurry with vanilla soft serve, gula melaka sauce and chendol jelly bits promises to deliver a sweet round-up.

[caption id="attachment_28188" align="aligncenter" width="650"] Image Credit: Superadrianme[/caption]

And if you still have the space for extras, pick up a Chendol Melaka ice cream cone on the way out.

From the Chendol Melaka Twist to the more adventurous Chendol Melaka ChocoCone, there’s something for every palate.

But wait, it does not stop there.

Pop by McCafe for a delightful pandan creation, in the form of a Pandan Coco Frappé or the Kueh Salat Cake (pandan custard and glutinous rice).

And if you feel like going traditional, McDonald’s is also offering their signature Vanilla cone at $0.50 from 4 to 10 August.

P.S. There Are Special Discounts For NS men!

As a salute to the 50th year of National Service, the fast food chain is offering all past and present NS men a free Apple Pie or Hot Fudge Sundae with every Extra Value Meal.

All you need to do is present your SAFRA ID, 11B or Pink IC.

We foresee crazy queues the moment they open, so be sure to snag your spot in the queue early!

Happy early National Day!
