Eyescream And Friends: Shaved Ice GELATO That’s Super Cute, All Natural, And More!

When you’re sizzling in the Land of a Thousand Suns, you can’t help but crave for something cold… some shaved ice perhaps? Or, gelato would really hit the spot too. It sure is a tough decision when both seem equally yummy… Well guess what, now you can have both! That’s a food fantasy come true, as Eyescream and Friends has hit Singapore’s shores.

img_6427-min

The mastermind of this refreshingly ingenious concoction, Mr Joad Lopez, took inspiration from shaved ice he ate at a Taiwanese night market.

Back in Barcelona where gelato was aplenty, he decided to matchmake the two. And that, was how Eyescream and Friends was born.

Eyescream And Friends – Compass One

As its name suggests, Eyescream and Friends represents the 7 basic flavours – a quirky medley of characters with distinct personalities and names to boot.

[caption id="attachment_16768" align="alignnone" width="1028"]Eyescreamandfriends It goes on for miles! The toppings never end.[/caption]

Woah, too many toppings, too little time! What a torture to have to choose, can’t we have all of them?

img_6390-min

Here are some of the toppings – caramelized cookies, gummy bears, banana nut crunch, forest berries sauce, white chocolate sauce, and marshmallows.

Eyescream and Friends has just released its kiwi, watermelon and rockmelon toppings as well as a lovely salted caramel sauce.

img_6391-min

As of now, there are 8 different flavours and a whopping 15 different toppings to please your palate as you mix-and-match.

This guarantees that you’ll experience the dessert in novel ways each time, as you play with endless new flavour combinations.

Oreo Yoghurt Flavour Complete Pack ($6.90)

The Complete Pack ($6.90) which we got, comes with a cup of shaved gelato and 2 toppings. The packaging is really cool, as it’s designed to hold a cup of gelato and 2 fun-size cups of toppings, so that you can stroll around the mall while you eat!

The tray even has a spot at the side to clip a piece of tissue or two. This way, your hands are free to tackle your yummy target.

[caption id="attachment_16769" align="alignnone" width="4320"]img_6408-min Those eyes! He’s really camera-shy, being a newbie.[/caption]

The Oreo flavour was strong but not overpowering, and accurately encapsulated the taste of the crisp tidbit. No hint of stale biscuit there, we are talking Oreos fresh out of the packet.

We were surprised by how the shaved gelato managed to be creamy, yet not cloying. The icy texture of the gelato, which was smooth and slushy-like, prevented the Oreo flavour from coming across as too dense.

Add to that the tartness of the yoghurt flavour, which shook up the whole treat. Who would have thought that Oreo and yoghurt go this well together?

Wild Berry Complete Pack ($6.90)

img_6407-min

If you could capture the joys of childhood in one flavour, this would be it. The wild berry shaved gelato tasted really fun and mischievous, like a mix of grape-flavoured Hi-Chew, Kyoto grape, and strawberry bubble gum.

The fact that it had just the right kick of sourness lent it a really refreshing touch, without going overboard.

It’s the perfect pick-me-up in the mornings, an invigorating treat in hot afternoons, and a perfectly spunky dessert to round off the night.

Chocolate shaved gelato ($4.90, without toppings)

Despite being a really common flavour, this chocolate shaved gelato is curiously different from the norm. It comes with a touch of je ne sais quoi that is hard to place.

img_6424-min

While tasting similar to a hazel-nutty Ferrero Rocher, it has the added depth of the dark concentrated cocoa powder gathered at the bottom of a hot chocolate drink.

Cheesecake shaved gelato ($4.90, without toppings)

This was virtually a cheesecake blended into a slushy. However, with the pronounced taste of natural yoghurt, it’s a lighter, more refreshing version of your regular cheesecake.

img_64131-min

For an interesting and yummy combination, try the  cheesecake-flavoured shaved gelato topped with forest berries sauce or strawberry sauce. We did just that, and couldn’t have been more pleased with the results!

The creaminess of the cheesecake flavour complemented the fruity tartness of the berry sauce, which was tangy and ripe with flavour.

How Eyescream’s Shaved Gelato is Made

We managed to capture how these little, tasty wide-eyed creatures are created!

[video width="640" height="360" mp4="https://discoversg.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/medium1.mp4"][/video]

First, a cylindrical block of ice maintained at an optimum temperature (for the right balance between creamy and icy), is loaded into an ice-shaving machine.

This contraption, which is flown in from Barcelona, then carves delicate layers of shaved gelato into a bowl.

Gelato shakes and lollipops

Apart from shaved gelato, Eyescream and Friends truly lives up to its philosophy of creating smiles, by offering gelato shakes ($5.90) as well as handmade lollipops ($4.90).

[caption id="attachment_16780" align="alignnone" width="720"]Eyescream and friends Facebook Eyescream and friends Facebook[/caption]

Among the lollipops, mango and apple are the most popular flavours. They’re all extremely fresh, as Eyescream and Friends flies them in from Barcelona regularly.

6 DIE DIE Must Visit Stalls For Lovers Of Seafood White Bee Hoon!

The seafood white bee hoon buzz is one of the latest food craze in our sunny island.

This unassuming tze-char dish has been around for ages in Singapore, with no one paying so much attention to it until now.

With so many wannabes in the market riding on the wave of the craze, it’s rare to come by stalls that genuinely know their stuff.

Here are some of the places we recommend for a good plate of our favourite local seafood white bee hoon!

1. Woon Woon Pek Beehoon

This small hawker stall at Changi Village Hawker Centre brings in long lines of customers every week.

[caption id="attachment_14515" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Credit: cptslow yeo Credit: cptslow yeo[/caption]

Their speciality is the seafood that goes with its bee hoon. Choose from a top-up of fish, crab, prawn, crayfish or mussels. If you’re feeling hungry (or are in a group), you can try the seafood platter ($30 or $40).

2. East Seafood White Beehoon

Led by a chef with 30 years of culinary experience, East Seafood hawker chain prides itself on offering affordable seafood white bee hoon amidst rising seafood prices.

With three hawker branches located in Toa Payoh, Hougang (Ciyuan CC) and Ang Mo Kio, they also offer great seafood add-ons with their bee hoon (crayfish, lala and crabs).

No.51 Hougang Ave Ci Yuan Hawker Centre, Singapore 538776

3. Jia Wei White Beehoon

Quietly tucked away in an HDB coffee shop in Jalan Bukit Merah (near ABC Brickworks hawker centre), Jia Wei brings a homey taste to its tze char specials.

4. White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon

When it comes to seafood white bee hoon, this famous restaurant chain in the north is the mother of them all.

White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon is one of the pioneers of the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon. Their version is dressed in thick sauce and copious ingredients (eggs, sotong, chai sim, and prawns – yum!). Beware of the long queues on the weekends!

White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon
Address: 22 Jalan Tampang (Opp Sembawang Shopping Centre) Singapore 758966

5. Hualong Fishhead Steamboat

Though not seafood white bee hoon specialists, Hualong manages to differentiate its rendition of the dish by making it drier than usual.

[caption id="attachment_14364" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]hualong Image: facebook.com/hualongfishheadsteamboat[/caption]

The seafood white bee hoon is served on an opeh leave, and topped with sliced cabbage, fried garlic and lime for flavour.

Complete your meal with one of their delicious dishes, such as fish maw soup, fried sotong and fuyong omelette.

Hua Long Fishhead Steamboat
Address: Block 347, #01-2142 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, Singapore 560347

6. Hong Yun Seafood

One of the more successful coffee shop stalls in Toa Payoh, Hong Yun is known for the crispy – and huge – pork lard that they generously scatter across several of their dishes. Same goes for their seafood white bee hoon dish!

While you’re there, try out their sambal kangkong and potato leaves – shiok!

Hong Yun Seafood
Address: Block 124, Toa Payoh Lor 1, #01-459 Singapore 310124

What is it about seafood white bee hoon that keeps drawing customers – new and old – week after week?

Could it the salty rice noodles that make up the core of the dish? Is it the prawns and sotong that accompanies it? Or could it be the fragrant, hot gravy that tops it all off?

It’s pointless to think too much into it – just join the queue this weekend and find out!

1. Hojiak Black & White Rojak

[caption id="attachment_14006" align="alignnone" width="1600"]hojiak-rojak-khatib Image Credit: Cavin Teo[/caption]

As the name of this stall implies, they sell real “ho-jiak” (“delicious” in Hokkien) rojak, a popular local delight.

Hojiak Black & White Rojak has been faithfully serving the palatable delight to residents around Khatib MRT for a long time. While it has moved from one coffee shop to another within the same neighbourhood, it is always strategically located next to the drinks stall.

Rojak served with the black shrimp paste (“hae ko”) is considered a sinfully unhealthy food. But who can resist the plate of crisp tofu and dough fritters, with crunchy cucumber and turnip slices drizzled with lots of diced peanuts? I can’t!

If you prefer a healthier version, try the white rojak which is served with sour plum sauce, a refreshing tangy taste that is equally yummy too!

Shami Banana Leaf Delights is a popular Indian food stall that started operations at Northpoint Shopping Centre food court since 1993. There were crazy queues in front of the stall during meal times back in the good old days.

Their signature dish has to be the nasi briyani set that comes with flavourful meat served on fluffy briyani rice. With the expansion of 2 outlets at Food Republic Causeway Point and Sembawang Road, it’s now more convenient to get your briyani fix!

No wonder there is always a queue at the stall!

Yet another perennial favourite of the northlanders, Chong Pang Nasi Lemak started as a humble stall in the Chong Pang Village Hawker Centre in 1973. Over the years, it has gained such a huge following with its freshly cooked dishes that it has since relocated to a coffee shop along Sembawang Road to cater to a larger crowd.

The coconut rice is aromatic but not overpowering. Popular dishes include the specially marinated chicken wings fried to perfection, spicy long beans and sambal brinjal. For a really satisfying meal with a kick, don’t forget to add their signature chilli sauce!

Also found in Chong Pang Food Centre, Xiang Xiang Fishball Noodles is one of my favourite comfort food. This is a familiar name to many of those who grew up in the old kampung days in Nee Soon.

As one of the rare hawker stalls that still serves food to your table, Xiang Xiang’s fishballs are big and springy, made with fresh yellowtail fish or ikan parang. Try the dry spicy version for a savoury bowl of noodles tossed with a generous mix of lard, chilli paste and soy sauce. The accompanying soup is lightly flavoured with “chye poh” (preserved turnip) which adds to the fragrance!

The difference is that the noodles used for Kolo Mee are made with only egg whites, making them a shade lighter and a tad healthier.

However, we are unsure of this stall’s opening hours, so do arrive early to avoid disappointment!

7. L32 Handmade Noodles

With L32 Handmade Noodles located at the food court of Tampines 1, you no longer have to travel to Geylang Lor 32 to get your Ban Mian fix.

For its soupy version, an egg is cracked into its flavourful soup for a sweet aftertaste. The noodles are thin and chewy whilst the minced pork/chicken is seasoned nicely with the aroma of sesame oil. The dry version is similar to the soup version, but it is slightly tastier due to an additional secret sauce (we have no idea what it is).

Do note that the queue during lunch time is pretty long. For $4.20 per bowl, we’ll say the dish is worth queueing for.

[caption id="attachment_9769" align="alignnone" width="750"]Al Mahboob Indian Rojak Image credit: Yelp[/caption]

With good Indian Rojak getting difficult to find, this stall at Tampines is a blessing to all.

One of the best Indian Rojak stalls in Singapore, Al Mahboob‘s fiery red gravy is made from mashed sweet potatoes and spiked with chilli powder. Select from its wide array of ingredients before dipping them into its lip-smacking gravy! Prices depend on how many items you pick but the cost will definitely be below $10 (unless you pick fifty pieces or something). Besides the Indian Rojak, the other signature dish of this stall has to be its Sup Tulang ($6 for 4 pieces).

Meh, what’s so special about carrot cake? Don’t they all taste the same? Well, this 60+ year old stall nestled in the heart of Bukit Merah is probably the last of its kind in Singapore that serves true blue carrot cake. What we mean is, they actually mill their own rice to make the fried radish cake we all so fondly love. That’s maybe why they taste so much better.

7 Best Eats You Must Try Along Tanjong Katong For That Great Meal

The Tanjong Katong neighbourhood is one with cafes and eateries spouting out relatively fast. Coupled with old school eateries and stalls, it’s an eclectic neighbourhood with a wide range of food options.

With its large residential crowd and people flocking from all parts of Singapore, it is undoubtedly a prime spot for cafe owners and eateries.

Well, the East has practically everything for food! Yes, we East siders do take our food very seriously. Do join us for a gastronomic tour down Tanjong Katong Road as bring you 7 best cheap eats all under $15.

1. Punggol Nasi Lemak

https://www.instagram.com/p/9yVrbLpG5U/?taken-at=1130352

Don’t be fooled by its name. Although this stall is named Punggol Nasi Lemak, it is located along Tanjong Katong Road. Though it is priced slightly highly than your usual plate of Nasi Lemak, you get to choose from a wide array of dishes.

What we recommend – their crispy chicken wings fried to perfection, crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside; and their spicy Otah. Their French Beans fried with dried shrimps is also one of our must haves. For any Nasi Lemak dish, the sambal chilli is the most important condiment and we must say it is on point.

The queue starts as early as 6pm. Fret not, as their staff work quickly and it won’t take too long before it’s your turn (about 15 minutes). Each plate will cost from about $5 to $7 depending on what dishes you pick. Overall, its fried chicken wings and otahs undoubtedly win our hearts.

2. Eng’s Noodles House

Noddle House(image credit: wanton mee. This place has come a long way from the 1950s where it started out from a pushcart at Duku Road to a stall at Dunman Food Center and now a shophouse unit along Tanjong Katong Road.

Their noodles are custom made according to Eng’s specifications. Thicker than the usual wanton noodles, they’re springy and firm. Bottles of hot chilli sauce are also provided at each table. Their wontons, though smaller in size, are seriously addictive. Priced at $4.50 for a small bowl of wanton mee and $5.50 for a large one.

Tip: Order an extra plate of wonton (we prefer the non-fried version), you won’t regret it!

Some of their best sellers include Gula Melaka, Sea Salt Caramel, and Mao Shan Wang. This place also makes really good crispy waffles which are fluffy and soft on the inside.

The cafe is quite small and it is difficult to get a seat on weekends as it is usually crowded. $3.30 for a single scoop, $5.30 for double scoop and approximately $10 for 2 scoops of ice cream and waffles.

Don’t you just love it when cafes start springing up in our heartlands? As compared to the town area, rental prices are kept much lower at heartlands so cafes are able to charge lower prices (to the delight of foodies). Speaking of low prices, To-gather is a no GST (yes lah!) food joint serving foodgasmic Western delights and artisanal coffee. Hurray to penny pinchers!

7. Refuel Café

The last café in this list, Refuel boasts a casual vibe with plenty of natural sunlight for that perfect Instagram shot. I use ‘affordable’ a lot (hey, who can blame me when it’s true!), so I’ll change my tune by saying that the food menu is value-for-money. For a wholesome and hearty meal, look no further.

8. Pin Xiang Chicken Rice

It’s hard to miss this one, for this chicken rice stall generates a bustling long queue during lunch and dinner hours. The stall is true to its name (Pin Xiang means fragrant in Mandarin) with both the rice and chicken being extremely well prepared. I would consider this to be one of the best chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

The highlight of this humble list and one of my favourites of all-time, Xing Ji Bak Chor Mee is like seriously out of this world! The 30-45 minutes wait is well worth it. There’s only a soup version but the soup/broth is rich and immaculate. It outshines the meatballs and noodles by a mile. Tip: order more than 1 bowl.
